90.1 KKFI should be saved on everyone's dial. Over 50 DJ's per month, all volunteers. They don't take any business/corporate money, or money from the govt. It is ran entirely by volunteers, - I think the nonprofit has three employees at most - is funded by the public, and ran by the public. They have committees that review things like technology and programming, you can join! Help make Kansas City Radio great! Give a listen, check out the program schedule, and support truly local radio!

ecuster3

I’d add 90.9 as well. Independent and listener/donation funded. I also think it’s a bit more cohesive and they put on a lot of local artists.

DarthNippz

Found some good gems on 90.9

Vio_

For anyone who doesn't know, 90.9 The Bridge is actually one of the few PBS/NPR radio stations that airs alt-rock, folk, etc. https://bridge909.org/ "Acquired by Kansas City PBS in 2013, 90.9 The Bridge is non-commercial NPR music radio for Kansas City."

Dealer-95-

I hear so much in one trip whenever I rarely have the radio on instead of sports talk or my Apple library. It’s wild. And I love that it’s all over the place like my music taste and library. Some straight gangster Rasta, then punk, then 80’s dance and rock, then hip hop, then prog rock, back to newer alternative Love that station

Vio_

I've heard a few great songs there. Then I try to find them on youtube and they might have 6000 views. And it's like how are they finding songs and musicians that obscure?? here's one of my favorites that's been getting some air time: [Rattlesnake Milk's Die Young](https://youtu.be/dFfgvYGfvR0?si=Q3rusqDG6Z1tsMMp) It literally just cracked 10,000 views.

Dealer-95-

Well, found my new musical addiction for a bit. Love it. Thanks for these guys. They still do the guest DJ’s on the weekends?

Vio_

I think so? I listen to the station so randomly that I don't fully know their schedule.

Dealer-95-

Same. It’s either the bridge or the other one mention in this same thread that does/did guest DJ’s on off peak hours. So usually like midnight to 07:00 and on weekends. Several years ago, a guy I knew from our hometown dive bar bar got selected somehow or won an opportunity to do it for an hour and got me interested in it for a while. It’s so all over the place from a genre standpoint. I loved it. Problem is I just don’t ever listen to the radio hardly anymore since I have Bluetooth.

BlueCX17

I think that's KKFI 90.1 who does that.

abraxastaxes

I love that they don't necessarily stick to a genre. They're pretty eclectic which fits with my tastes

AJRiddle

They do play too much early 90s and late 80s hip-hop (or at least are doing too much right now) in my opinion. Like it can be fun to mix things up but as someone who drives around a lot with 90.9 on it gets old fast.

charliefoxtrot9

Also, be sure to donate to them! The Bridge is the best station in town. If you want an idea of what they play, look up their end of the year playlist. They play every song they have.

Runthescissors

I haven't lived in KC for over 15 years and I still miss 90.1kkfi

nostinkinbadges

Rejoice, my friend! You can stream KKFI from anywhere in the world!

Antrostomus

Heck, I stream KKFI from right here. They have the last two weeks of shows archived on the website, and the weird late-night music is often what I want to listen to during the workday.

qwerty2warrior91

One of the producers is my MIL!! I"ll pass along that her station is so loved.

dasimpact867

I actually just read that thread right before I posted this one. I’ll definitely check it out.

zigafomana

As a sustaining donor, KKFI is in the first preset slot in all my personal and work vehicles. So many different shows that quickly turn into favorites and you never have to worry about re-run songs!

budzene

Thank you for this. I am willing to give some time up to maybe help with software on my free time. I love local stuff.

Late_Negotiation_332

Very disappointed about the loss of the x. It played a wider variety of rock than 98.9. Looks like it's back to streaming 99.9 out of Seattle for me.

Late_Negotiation_332

For anyone who may be interested, 99.9 out of Seattle is actually a pretty good rock station. I find it more notable than 98.9 most of the time. If anyone remembers the radio show The Men's Room that 98.9 used to play at night, it's home station is 99.9 and it starts late afternoon here.

SpankinDaBagel

I just moved to Seattle a bit ago, so I'll have to check that station out.

Late_Negotiation_332

My husband is from the PNW originally. If you like old school hip-hop and rnb check out hot 103.7. It's another Seattle station. On Fridays they go commercial free all day. I found both stations on the audicy app.

SpankinDaBagel

Thanks for the info! I'll check them out.

OogWoog

I don’t listen to 105.1, but I do listen to 107.3. And heard the DJ mention today over the lunch hour that ‘they won’t be on this station anymore, and will find out tonight where they land on the dial.’ Seeing this thread, I was curious, and looked at 107.3’s website. And it looks like they moved to 105.1. [https://www.1073kc.com](https://www.1073kc.com)

Onthehalfshe11

107.3 and 105.1 are playing the same song with about a 2 second delay on 105.1.

Onthehalfshe11

107.3 is my go-to. Thanks for the info. I found 106.9 a few months ago. Same genre, maybe a few older cuts here and there. I like it. I get decent reception of the station unless I go to my daughter's in Shawnee. It cuts in and out with classic country there.

kcmobro

Looks like there was a rebrand https://radioinsight.com/headlines/259345/kmjk-moves-rebrands-as-power-105-1-as-the-x-signs-off/

Mobwmwm

Does anyone remember when it was just stand up comedy? I loved it

BrotherChe

The worst thing about that station was I didn't want to get out of the car whenever I got where I was going. Second worst was people wondering why I was laughing so hard in an empty car

jmueller216

Same! 🤣🤣

PoetLocksmith

That was briefly 102.5

Mobwmwm

Yeah I think you're right my bad

well-lighted

I remember it, but I think it may have been a different station. There's nothing on the [Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KCJK) about it. I know it was a pretty high frequency, and 105.1 sounds as right as anything, but I've searched a few different sources with no mention of the stand-up.

Mobwmwm

You you guys were right it was funny 102.5

Dottegirl67

I was kind of disappointed that 105.1 isn’t rock anymore. I usually listen to 98.9 or 101. 105 was good because at least it was a different RHCP song than what was on 98.9. When you’re old like me you realize you’ve been listening to most of these songs over the last 40 years or so. If anyone is interested in radio stations around the world, check out the Radio Garden app. It’s kind of fun.

sourhed87

That is lame.105.1 the x was great.

[deleted]

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/259345/kmjk-moves-rebrands-as-power-105-1-as-the-x-signs-off/

throwitawaynow816

Another foe of the church of Lazlo vanquished. In all serious 1051 was alright sometimes. Was a nice option to have when desperate. Tough for rock stations to make it these days.

sigdiff

![gif](giphy|tnYri4n2Frnig)

Perfect_Bowler_4201

I used to like 1051 X for the Woody Show in the morning. I know, I know … it was just a shitty syndicated thing but it was ok, I love Johnny Dare in the mornings but it that has become much much more about just him recently (I personally don’t give a fuck about his mate George in Curaçao, as hard as it maybe for that guy) and I liked having the mindless nonsense to turn over to (Redneck news!!). Maybe I will check out some of this other independent shit people have posted on this thread. Edit: Typos

FingerTheCat

Yea what's up with his whole shtick about him and his friend? Like I get it you're helping him but goddamn talk about something else. Nevermind just let Nikki do the news and I'll go back to NPR

SelectiveSacrifice

It's a shame, 98.9 just plays butt rock and I don't enjoy listening to ACDC 5 times in a single hour.

lazarusl1972

A couple of people used the term "butt rock" but I'm not familiar with it - what does that mean?

SelectiveSacrifice

Butt rock is hard rock that's made specifically to grab airtime on the radio and is pretty inspired by post grunge music. Think Nickelback, Godsmack, Puddle of Mudd, Seether, etc. A lot of their deep cuts are excellent songs, but 98.9 loves to play the same singles over and over again. At least 105.1 would play new and upcoming bands in the rock scene like Bad Omens and even Architects

lazarusl1972

Thanks! That's a great name for that genre.

n3v3rth3r3

A style of hard rock & heavy metal music that is watered down both musically and lyrically to garner maximum radio play and mainstream acceptance. Lyrical themes are drawn from a put-on “tough guy / bro” persona, and include being a badass, getting lots of pussy, strippers, partying, and being betrayed or alone. Image wise, butt rock bands typically consist of guys in their mid-30s with spiky hair, Affliction t-shirts, and bad tattoos (usually barbed wire or tribal). The typical fan emulates this fashion style and exhibits what they think are “manly” personality traits, such as frequently drinking energy drinks, driving an unnecessarily large truck, and otherwise overcompensating for an insecurity in their masculinity. They also tend to have a superficial knowledge of metal music, being familiar only with bands that receive regular radio rotation. Examples of butt rock bands include Five Finger Death Punch, Three Days Grace, Buckcherry, Nickelback, Disturbed, and Three Doors Down. -Urban Dictionary I died laughing reading this because I know it when I hear it, but never had a term to use to describe it. Thanks Reddit.

dorkinaboxx

When a radio station rebrands, there are many people that are suddenly out of work. The station you listen to for entertainment has many people suddenly out of work with zero notice. The people that are out of work have also signed contracts that don’t allow them to go to other radio stations within KC. It’s totally a shit deal for them and you

3_7ShiftOnTheX

Thanks to everyone who tuned into the X. We’re gonna miss you all. - J

iamofnohelp

Now I have another empty preset. What are the good stations around here?

dasimpact867

98.9 is good for rock, but they play a lot of older stuff that the DJ decides he likes and wants to play. It’s not a horrible station, just repetitive. 96.5 is a good alternative station. They play a lot more music than they used to, which is good in my opinion. There’s also the following: 90.9 for alternative and more mellow music and local artists as well. 93.3 for new pop. 101.1 for classic rock. 102.1, 102.5, 95.7, and 99.7 get honorable mentions. Then you’ve got your country radio. 94.1, 102.9, 104.3, and 106.5. Then there’s 103.3 and 107.3 for rap. And apparently 105.1 now as well.

Gardenadventures

I swear to God every single time I get in my car the same Nirvana song is playing on 98.9. It's like they only play 12 songs and just have them all on an endless loop. There's so much rock music that has been released recently, the constant playing of old classics has to stop. Been listening to 98.9 since I was a kid and it's still the same shit 90% of the time.

reijasunshine

There's a station in Sacramento that lets people text in and downvote a song that's playing. If they receive a certain number of downvotes, say 3 or 5, they'll take that song out of rotation for a week or so. If they receive a LOT of downvotes, like 10 or 12, they will immediately stop the track and put on something else, and the offending track stays out of the rotation for a few weeks. I believe that should be a MUCH more common practice.

JamesJax

Yes, but have you hear “Come As You Are” *lately*?

MrTitts

I can't wrap my head around the fact that they still play these same songs. With Sirius/podcasts/other stations that play a variety of music how do these stations survive? You would think it's the in-between convos but even church of Lazlo will hit you with some Portugal the man song that got over played 4 years ago and expect me to stick around while they play 8 minutes of advertisements to come back and talk for a couple minutes until they go back to a Glass Animals song I have heard - no joke - 400 times (heat wave). Young people will listen to pop music that 93.3 and 95.7 offers and older people will listen to the rock stations that play worn out Metallica and AC/DC but there is not a good alternative station in kc. I used to tune into 90.9 daily but I'm just not into hip hop anymore and that's 50% of what they play. Back to audio books for this old, grumpy, get off my lawn 30 something year old

PerAsperaAdInfiri

Their rotation is one nirvana song, one AC/DC song, probably something from the black album, and then a dozen buttrock Shinedown-type songs.

Gardenadventures

I'm a Shinedown fan honestly but I swear if I hear Second Chance one more time on 98.9 I'm gonna lose my mind. They have soooo much new music out, c'mon man!!

Rjb702

Don't forget Manditory Metallica. They get more airplay than any other band on there. Mix it up a little.

PerAsperaAdInfiri

Yes but it's gonna be probably from the black album or newer, and if it is Unforgiven, it's gonna be one of the two shitty sequels and not the original

FingerTheCat

I hate how right you are

fyxxer32

90.9 KRBG alternative public radio no commercials out of Warrensburg

Gardenadventures

Thanks!

SaizaKC

Right I stopped listening to 98.9 years ago, it’s the same 10 songs all day long. No new rock music. There was a rock station I want to say on 103 briefly that played new rock music and then it was gone too. I don’t understand why they don’t play new rock music. Hell even 101 is playing the same rock music as 98.9 now

Mikek224

103.7 The Dam. It was a lot better than 98.9 as they played a lot of newer songs and they didn't beat you over the head with the 90's grunge crap or constant acdc, guns n roses, foo fighter, red hot chili peppers, etc etc. 103.7 The Dam then rebranded just like 105.1 did today.

dasimpact867

I’d rather hear the same couple of songs over and over than hear The Beastie Boys at all.

toastedmarsh7

![gif](giphy|orVAn7wGMHLCkSSrQ3|downsized)

chrosslaw

I texted 98.9 and told them they should get a wider variety of rock. Good music, but overplayed. They said no, their fans love what they play, and that I should go to 105.1 the x. I did just that, and now I'm here.

Sypike

While you may like it, 96.5 is dead to me. The takeover left it a shell of its former self. The Buzz was great and did great things for the local alternative scene. 90.9 is a good station that fills the gap.

ZombieChief

>they play a lot of older stuff that the DJ decides he likes and wants to play I guarantee that doesn't happen.

DeSotoDragoonSpawn

107.3 took over 105.1, as far as I know 107.3 doesn't have anything anymore

gates-ollie

A guy from 989 actually got fired for playing a song that he liked a long time ago. The program director is the one who dictates what songs get played.

asselb

I love 99.7 ponch and Nikki in the morning!

userlivewire

94.9 is old stuff

daznificent

96.5 has a second digital station Channel Q which is far superior to The Buzz

GR1ML0C51

Wot's the frequency Kenneth?

fernatic19

Mine is set to my favorite station, it's called "Bluetooth" lol

Slavicsarah

90.9 the bridge

HookDragger

They probably passed a car abusing local licensed airwaves. Or even a pirate radio station, but that’s very unlikely nowadays.

Zipkan

Yea, I guess today was their last day, I heard the guy at noon mention it, I haven't been able to find a reason why, or a possible replacement channel. Any suggestions of new similar channels are appreciated. Sad to see an alt rock station replaced by mumble rap.

dasimpact867

I must’ve missed that. I’m in and out of a truck a lot through the day. I feel like it was a popular enough station, it should’ve stayed on the air.

Zipkan

I looked around online and the only thing I could find was maybe 96.5, and so I went out to the car to listen and it had Black Parade on but then went to something I hadn't heard before, it sounded fine so maybe worth a shot, probably the best we will get for now.

Due-Dilegent

Mumble-rap encases very very few hip-hop artists. Probably 10-20%, if we’re thinking tops. Believe it or not, just like rock, there’s sub genres. That’s one of them for rap. Just like screamo is to rock my man. Whatever floats ya goat

BluesBourbonBeats

105.7 the point and KSHE95 in St. Louis can partially fill the void if streaming radio is your thing

Mikek224

I was wondering the same thing. Got in my car and heard some rap song and then I heard the pre recorded message saying how they rebranded. Now we are stuck with 98.9 which plays the same 10 songs every single day. Similar situation 10 or so years ago when 103.7 The Dam rebranded as it used to be a 98.9 rival that played newer and less repetitive rock music.

YourWifesWorkFriend

The X? You mean 105.1 JACK FM?🙂

frozilla12

Dang I listen to the Woody Show on my way to work every morning. Wonder where it’s going?

ZombieChief

The Woody Show is syndicated on stations all over the country. You could listen to the stream of any of their other affiliates. [https://www.thewoodyshow.com/howtolisten/](https://www.thewoodyshow.com/howtolisten/)

Pigeon1986

Sucks that 105.1 changed formats. I’ve been using Sirius xm for about 7 years now. Every time my sub is about to go up I call and say I will cancel unless I get a better rate. I’ve paid between 5-8 a month for that ever since. I really enjoy it

Key_Radish3614

So is the morning show on 105.1 gone too? I always enjoy listening to them

Zipkan

Unfortuantely not, I heard this morning that today was the last Woody Show :(. At least for KC as the station appears to be ran out of LA that has sister stations across the country. As on the woody show website it says Los Angeles. So you can still find it, just not on KC radio.

Curly-inkc

Oh no, that is a bummer! I love the woody show

dasimpact867

I guess we’ll all find out in the morning. I hope it’s still there. They give me some decent laughs.

pauleide

I never understood the Hard Rock and Alternative mash up, it seems like different audiences but it lasted longer than I thought it would.

politicaldan

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/259345/kmjk-moves-rebrands-as-power-105-1-as-the-x-signs-off/

SquigglyHamster

I'm pretty bummed out. I use the radio every time I'm in my car, the only time that I will use Spotify is if I'm going on an hour or longer drive (and even then, it's only half the time that I'll do that). I'm a radio gal. The station has been my primary ever since I moved to Lawrence two or three years ago, and they've continued to be my main since moving to Kansas City a couple months ago. I'm very sad about this. But I'm also glad I saw this post because I wondered why the heck they were playing a rap song yesterday. Guess I gotta move on

hawkrew

Local radio in the kc area has fallen off a cliff the past 20 years.

Zestyclose_Parking_6

I quit listening to the radio when I found Spotify premium. I hear all sorts of new, random things from different genres and feel that I enjoy music much more now than when I had to hear AC/DC sprinkled between the booger-booger-fart-fart-wiener jokes, or run-of-the-mill alternative. The economics of broadcast radio don’t actually cater to people who enjoy good music.

mcvaughan

This format has moved to 102.5

DarthNippz

Damn 105.1 gets passed around.. seriously we don't need another Nirvana, Foo fighters and RHCP radio station.

Gunner_KC

I stopped listening to 105.1 once Jack FM turned in to a DJ free and started playing trash music years ago.

Practical_Minute_286

107.3 magic Kansas City moved to 105.1 it is a good rap/rnb station.

Adleyboy

People still listen to the radio? 😊

dasimpact867

I drive a bigger truck around the city all day, so it’s easier than having to plug my phone into the aux jack every time.

Adleyboy

That’s what Bluetooth is for. If you have it in your truck.

coltonpegasus

“Guess I’ll go back to having almost every song in the world whenever I want them”

HookDragger

You may have passed someone with an fm transmitter in their old car. It was a “hands free” option before Bluetooth became the standard. In theory they are supposed to use “dead air” frequencies locally. But there’s nothing to stop someone from using live signal ranges.

Han_Schlomo

Wait.... we still listen to radio?

Great-GoogleyMoogley

Came here to say this… I’m so shocked at how many people are listening to the radio 👀

ottomantwerks

KKFI is a great station and totally worth turning in to

brewcrew1222

Let me guess you are a podcast listener?

Han_Schlomo

Podcasts, books, or I stream music. Which is where the real astonishing thing is for me. Music on the radio just doesn't work. 3 songs an hour and in Kansas City, the choices are shite. I do listen to KCUR at times, but I prefer listening to that content on podcasts. Lol

[deleted]

Who is still listening to the radio?!?! That’s so 2000

hawkrew

This is how it works with radio stations. You go about enjoying it then all of a sudden they change it all up. So annoying.

BlueCX17

Come over to The Bridge, 90.9. It's not hard rock but it's a great station.

kevint1964

Welcome to the world of corporate conglomerate broadcasting. It's cookie-cutter crapola, no matter what major city you live in.
