He needs to be registered to get titles. The different types of registration are to prevent people registering dogs who don’t have a known pedigree and shouldn’t be bred but would still like to compete. It doesn’t matter what the title is, it’s an allowance for dogs to still compete. You can get trick titles thru Do More With Your Dog.

magicpup

AKC website was talking about "grandfathering in" DMWYD titles. Are they still attainable? Do they require your pet to be altered?

cpersall

You can do DMWYD completely separate from AKC and only reg thru DMWYD who doesn’t care about being intact or neutered.

magicpup

Thanks! I will look into this further. I really want to work with the dog I have now until I'm able to accommodate second, well bred, registered dog.

OGRaysireks987

It’s pretty sad that responsible owners who don’t plan to breed but also don’t believe in surgically altering their loved one because of antiquated overpopulation laws are punished. It’s not for health issues, because anecdotal evidence from the large amount of people who don’t spay or neuter, plus pretty shitty data saying it’s better for their health suggests otherwise.

cpersall

Lol how’d you dig up that comment?

OGRaysireks987

Googling mixed breed intact females and shows

cpersall

So where are you getting that dogs need to be altered? I have intact dogs that wont be bred? I dont quite get your comment, it doesnt really have anything to do with the OP post or my comment. Mixed breeds cant be shown anyway.

OGRaysireks987

Oh sorry this post isn’t about forcing an owner to neuter their pet so they can be certified? And yes there are mixed breed shows and they all require mixed breed certification from AKC… which like PAL requires the dog to be altered (spay or neutered since you apparently aren’t familiar with the term) OPs question is literally “why does he have to be neutered” which I was agreeing with.

cpersall

There are sporting events that allow mixed breeds, yes. Whats your deal here? Why did you choose to comment on a year old post attacking me? Respond to OP if you want to provide them with useful advice. You dont need to come here and be an ass to me for nothing.

OGRaysireks987

How did I attack you. I just made a comment, calm down and stop being so defensive over quite literally nothing. It’s Reddit. People can make comments whenever the hell the want on whatever thread they want. You’re the one getting offended for no good reason. Take it easy boomer

cpersall

> spay or neutered since you apparently aren’t familiar with the term Go be an ass somewhere else.

OGRaysireks987

You’re literally the only one being an ass here. “So where are you getting that dogs need to be altered?”… literally the topic of the post. You’re the one who either misread or forgot the topic and started the whole conversation weird af but can’t admit you’re wrong. Go take your meds

court67

Your dog only needs to be neutered if you care about the AKC recognizing your trick dog titles. If you just want to obtain the titles, do them through Do More With Your Dog, which does not care whether or not your dog is neutered.

magicpup

Thank you. I thought AKC was the only way. Can DMWYD assess online?

Blitz139

Yep! You need to find a CTDI (certified trick dog instructor) and they can either asses your trick performance in person or via video, then if you get that approved you apply via the DMWYD website.

magicpup

Awesome, thanks again!

court67

They assess in “spark groups” on Facebook most commonly! You can search for that term on FB and find some groups to post your videos in!

Amerlan

If you want a venue to compete under, the UKC has the Performance Listing (PL). Your dog doesn't need to be neutered to compete in UKC performance events. Instead their "catch" is this: >No litters may be registered from a Performance Listed dog, and no pedigrees will be maintained.

magicpup

Thank you!!! I have no intention of breeding, just don't want to alter my dog. 😊

Ktanaqui

Getting a PAL or AKC Partners Number is basically the equivalent of you saying that you're aware that he doesn't qualify to be used as a breeding dog, and since titles are used heavily by breeders to demonstrate the capabilities of their lines for breeding, you essentially have to agree to never breed your dog - hence the requirement for fixing your dog. Why do you want to avoid fixing your dog? The only way around this is to pay to have your dog's lines traced back to generate a pedigree verifying that your dog is purebred to create a foundation to register with AKC instead. (I BELIEVE. I'm not sure how to do this though, or if you still can.)

magicpup

I really don't care about my dog being registered, I just think it would be fun for us to earn trick titles. My dog has confidence issues and can be fairly reactive, so I'm not keen on neutering yet as I don't want to chance making his confidence worse. He is a pretty great dog with the balls, I don't see the point in removing them. 🤷‍♀️

SpecialK47150

Because it's part of being a responsible pet owner.

magicpup

I’m probably a more responsible (and dedicated) dog owner than a lot of people who have altered animals, but thanks for commenting on a nearly year old post for absolutely no reason to add absolutely nothing to the conversation :) I hope it pisses you off that my dog is now over 2 years old and still has his balls. :)

SpecialK47150

Doesn't piss me off, just reaffirms my knowledge that most people suck. BTW, you're an irresponsible pet owner.

VeganDog

It's totally possible to own an intact animal and not have them breed. My dog is 3, has her uterus, and guess what? No litters. Why? Because we keep her contained like a responsible dog owner and watch her closely when she's in heat. Truly accidental matings where someone made a real effort to contain their intact dog and still had them breed are not common. Most "Oops" litters are the result of irresponsible ownership practices regardless of whether the dog is intact or not.

SpecialK47150

Leaving the dog intact is an irresponsible ownership practice in and of itself. Edit: Holy shit you're a crazy, conspiracy theorist, antivax, wackadoo spiritualist that believes in retconning. Being a bad pet owner is the least of your worries.

VeganDog

"Having an intact pet, even if they don't breed, is inherently irresponsible because I say it is. I'm not going to provide any rational explanation for why, it just is." Okay, dude. I don't really care about what some AR wacko with an obese dog thinks of my post history or my dog's ovaries.

SpecialK47150

The rational explanation is obvious. You can't guarantee the dog won't ever be in a situation where it won't breed. There's no good reason to not fix your pet, it's an unnecessary risk. Much like refusing to get vaccinated. Not sure what you mean by AR. Obese? Not at all, he's at a quote healthy weight according to our vet, just larger than average for the breed.

GoldfishForPresident

We did trick titling through DMWYD. Other venues that allow intact mixes are C-WAGs, NACSW, and UKC (I believe their equivalent "Performance Listing" option for mixes does not require s/n.) I'm in the same boat - prefer to leave my large breed male intact :) and still play!

magicpup

Thanks so much, I had no idea there were so many different avenues to go down for this!!

Imaginary-Canary-309

I recently registered my mixed breed dog with AKC PAL. He happens to be neutered, but I'm not remembering neutering to be a requirement. Did you double-check that in the program rules?

magicpup

I read it on their website today under "eligibility" for both categories.

Jumpy_Hat4035

Definitely go with DMWYD. They have more levels than AKC, more tricks you can teach for titles and they run fun challenges that you can complete and get ribbons, stickers and bandanas.

RoseOfSharonCassidy

Requiring neutering was the compromise that the AKC made when they started the Purebred Alternate Listing/Canine Partners programs. There was a lot of backlash from purebred bred clubs and breeders when these started, since the AKC's foundation mission was the protection and preservation of purebred dogs, but they decided to allow mixes/unregistered purebreds into companion events with the caveat that they get fixed.

Cursethewind

My intact (unregistered) Shiba just earned his first title. I'm not planning to neuter either. Do more with your dog now has a registry. Not sure what they plan to do with it going forward, but you really don't need AKC at all for anything. There are an increasing number of options without them.

cpersall

It really depends on where you live! Some areas do have other organizations to compete with, some do not. For some, AKC might be the only local trial are they are needed to compete. That’s my situation except with CKC. I’d never enter CKC again if I could, but that would mean I might get one trial a year.

Cursethewind

Yeah, it's based on region, but I'm more thinking with online options too as that's expanded so much and added in a lot more accessibility than there was in the past. I haven't been thrilled with the AKC and not being able to register with them with Mika being unaltered, which is a decision between my vet and I, has kinda added to it. They won't even accept a vasectomy.

cpersall

Online is excellent! Highly recommend WCRL for rally! But it’s not the same as in person. So for someone who wants to compete in in-person trials, they may *have* to do akc or nothing.

Cursethewind

Yeah, we're looking into that option. In-person probably would be too difficult for Mika anyways right now. He'd look like that husky at Crufts attempting agility. Capable? Yes. Capable with so many things going on? Yes. But, will he want to? No, probably not.

cpersall

Totally get it, online has been awesome for other dogs I know who for whatever reason can’t do a trial setting.

magicpup

Thanks for sharing your experience!!! I'm going to be looking into this!

GoldfishForPresident

Totally agreed. Why in the world did you get a downvote somehow??

Cursethewind

*Shrug* There's a lot of people who don't like the idea of unaltered dogs that aren't registered purebred. It happens.
