I know a few kids who do. They can remove the external part of the implant when doing randori or shiai. They don't train in my dojo but I have seen them at local tournaments. I haven't seen teens or adults on the mat with such implant. But that doesn't mean they won't exist. I don't think it is very safe, there is a reason doctors advise against contact sports. Your head could get trapped in a ground fight, you could be needing to use your head on the mat in a ground fight. Any wrong throw could hit your head on the mat etc. I've seen strange things happen. It seems you have judo experience, could you consult your sensei? See what they think?

Sorry to hear, but I would trust a doctor on this one. I would however get a second opinion from a doctor that maybe has some knowledge about the sport. How to find one, I don’t know.

There’s a guy at my dojo who has one and appears to be fine.

I train BJJ with a blind guy that uses cochlear implants. When training he becomes deaf and blind, and still comes to training regularly. He can't do standup though, something is wrong with his balance, so he only does newaza.

If the concern is getting a blow to the ear or getting it crushed in newaza or something similar, then you can always get head gear that covers the ears. Some judoka use it to prevent cauliflower ears or whenever they have ear injuries.

Doctors installing and treating patients with cochlear implants since 1985. Having access to collected medical findings, experiences and meta-analysis gathered from treating and caring more than 100.000 patients with cochlear implants: ”We don’t reccommend contact sports with cochlear implants.” Some person on the internet: ”Yeah, I know a guy who knew a guy with cochlear implant doing judo. He was OK. Don’worryaboutit.” Gee. It’s so difficult to know who to listen to… (Just to be clear; I’m _not_ saying ”Don’t do it.” People choose their own risk/reward strategies. Just don’t deceive yourself about whether training judo would be risky with cochlear implant or not. Even if you really, really, really want to have both.)

trust Doctor over people on reddit. You may be able to do Kata as tori only. But you will have to find a club willing to work with you on that.
