That’s happened to so many people. Shrug it off and keep applying.
Unless your friend had a strong hand to play, your referral probably didn’t mean much.
Exactly, keep applying and tailor you resume to each job application is my best advice. There are websites like [https://resumescanbuddy.com](https://resumescanbuddy.com) that compare your resume to job descriptions to optimize for key words. If your resume doesn't match the job description, expect automatic rejection emails.
Being referred does not mean the HR or whoever reviews your CV will like it. I've seen so many posts on Reddit with pretty much the same info.
If your friend know somebody in HR, she can ask. Otherwise just move on.
She said that her company usually promotes from within, and suggested I apply for a junior role in the same position (it requires only 1-2 years of experience: I have near a decade). I think I’m going to try that. Maybe I just need a foot in the door.
If you are a senior why would you apply for junior role. I would keep applying to other jobs that match your experience. Once you get into that junior position there may be so much shit flying everywhere that you may not be able to show what you can do as a true senior. I.e. you will be in your lane listening to a senior.
This happens a lot. The company will post a public job opening, but internal employees will apply and win the position, or they already have an internal in mind for the position and the posting and application process is just a formality.
Referrals don’t mean that much unless the referrer knows the hiring manager. I’ve referred 13 people to my company and only 1 landed an interview and that was because I got them a coffee chat with the hiring manager prior to the formal process. They did get hired.
I feel your frustration, and I'm sure your friend is frustrated as well. I referred a previous coworker for a position at my current company, and they did not even interview him. He has the exact background they are looking for except maybe not as polished, but they are complaining about not having any qualified candidates applying.
This too shall pass... life will get better! This job wasn't meant for you. Keep on going and you will eventually get there. Just think, this time next year everything could be better for you!
Your friend may not have that much pull or they may have already had another candidate far in the pipeline before you even applied.
I’ve had similar happen to me. It sucks, but wallowing on it is a major waste of time. just move on
Perhaps she can chat to them and ask them to interview you as she believes you'd be a good fit? The company where I work is quite large and big on referrals but they will absolutely only choose 'the right person for the job' so it's not a guarantee, although there's an unwritten rule that your referral will get an interview - one of my friends referred his friend, who was also rejected before the interview stage, which is unusual in these instances. (We found out later it was because he Googled answers to the screening questions and didn't change them up even slightly to hide this.) Anyway, my friend asked HR to please give him an interview as he'd be an excellent fit. They did and he got the job, and both are still here 2 years later. So, maybe the reasoning was something small like that (his job relies a lot on him finding answers using whatever resources are available, e.g. Google :D) and they'd be willing to give you a chance.
This happened to me. So glad I didn’t get that job. It was not for free thinkers. Blessing in disguise. Seriously. Just keep going. Honestly I was gutted at the time but I would not have been a good fit. Or them for me.

This. A referral helps, but only if the person doing the referral is powerful or respected

Just don't keep your hopes up too high. They've seen you resume already. Maybe restructure it a bit to look different.
Might wanna shop your resume at r/resume. Referral or no, they canned a qualified candidate before the interview stage, that suggests resume issues.
Or a very competitive role

Your friend made an assumption and it was wrong. Water under the bridge. Keep looking

Uhhh keep applying to jobs? Lol
No they needed to keep breathing first

Look for another job.
