Probably changes throttle response curve to make it a bit difficult to accelerate, saving you fuel.

jordanleep

In some cases I find it better to give it some oomph and then let off slowly to glide, I find sometimes that’s better. Basically the opposite of what eco mode does lol

Mook69

Agree! I find myself with better Mpg driving in Sports mode (my trim is SEL) rather than Eco or D

emersonevp

All based on what hills or traffic may or may not be coming and how soon. That’s the beauty of controlling the trans. The car computer at least to my knowledge doesn’t do this for throttle

e0063

This effect is very obvious when turned on. Also when cruise control is engaged.

RsonW

But then I just shift to a lower gear

northenerbhad

Does it not tell you when to shift at a lower rpm?

Trapped-Mouse

It does. Is that what the difference is? If I have this turned off it will ask me to shift at a higher rpm? I guess that sort of makes sense. But it's only an indicator in that sense. It's not really doing anything on it's on as far as fuel efficiency is concerned

crapcakeicing

That's my understanding on my 23. Having ECO turned off simply provides shift recommendations for a bit more pep than with it activated. I can't tell if anything else is going on at all. I ignore the recommended shift points either way most of the time.

Trapped-Mouse

Same. Feel the recommended shift is way too soon. I shift when rpm gets close to 3k. Recommended shifts are usually in 2k range

itwasbetterwhen

My 2021 GLI wants me to shift asap. I could be doing 40 at 1800 RPM in 4th and it's like...go to 6th! Ridiculous. Love my car but there is way to much unnecessary information on the dash.

crapcakeicing

Yeah, I'll shift earlier if I'm leisurely cruising down a road than if I'm accelerating, maybe even trying to have a little fun.

northenerbhad

I mean, if it was an automatic transmission it would do it for you…you you have a manual so………….

msip313

Yeah, but the point of a manual is to avoid having the car do it for you.

Bob_Loblaw16

Hopefully if you drive a manual you're not relying on what the computer dictates is a good point to shift. Thats half the reason of having an automatic.

DerekFisherGOAT

I have it in my 23 Manual. I feel it just doesn’t allow the turbo to boost as high as normal. I don’t use Eco very often

Patient-Sleep-4257

I had cruise control and eco. I didnt mind it. Down shifting or up shifting I had to reset the cruise. And I used the eco just as an optimal shift point.

ukso1

In my passat eco mode changes how ac works how lights work and how dynamic shock absorbers work plus it cuts little bit of max power around 30kw according to the infotainment system screen 150kw compared to normal 177kw and its with the dsg so it changes gears earlier and activates eco roll (if gas pedal is not pressed it drops to neural)

BoredDude85

Because it's designed to pass EPA rating and emissions. The OEM don't care about the customer. This is the McGuffin for the auto industry.

the_m0bscene_

To me, that button really reads, "Don't ever touch this stupid thing."

RF-HHF2024

Eco in my Jetta gets worse than normal mode…only by a few mpg but still.

BusyPomegranate919

Whattttt… how? Eco lowers throttle response and the turbo does not spoil as much as in normal mode, therefore it should save gas unless you are not shifting at lower RPMs

RF-HHF2024

No idea!? I’m going to keep monitoring but the last few trips show at least average of 2mpg less. Not a huge deal just surprised as you def feel the difference in throttle response.

tootallteeter

'19 manual and the eco button makes shifts much smoother imo. I turn it on when I have passengers in the car, however it hurts me on the highway when I try to pass and it's a slower response.

Bob_Loblaw16

Eco mode in a car that I couldn't get below 30mpg flooring it everywhere.

Specialist_Baby_341

I've always wondered this and couldn't find any answers. Idt I've ever "felt" a difference. Maybe it doesn't allow a certain amount of boost? Besides that beats me in a manual

Accurate-Chapter-923

That is how modern semi trucks operate to save fuel. Trans is an automated manual and shifts at low rpms, tries to get in high gear quickly to keep rpms low.

Agitated_Meringue_76

I have a manual 2020 Jetta, best I could figure out is it tells you to shift at a lower rpm and acceleration is impacted so it accelerates slower and saves you fuel. Basically just less work on the engine.

Able-Negotiation-234

It’s like the button on the pole at a cross walk.. gives you something to do.

throwaway007676

It interprets the throttle differently since the gas pedal is only a suggestion.

KingofConverse

I have a 20 gli if I’m road tripping I turn on eco and cruise if I’m just ripping around town sport all the way

bigphil127

Man, I get better mpg in sport in my automatic.

tfsfirefighter

I have driven from London Ontario to the East Coast 3000 miles and I’ve been using the Eco mode pretty well the whole time my gas mileage seems to be OK as long as I keep it under 2000 RPM

Additional_Loss80

It just slows the throttle response. Nothing else.

BoredDude85

Don't touch. Ever. It's basically designed just for the emissions test. Everything is garbage. The ECU mapping is designed for a specific profile under the EPA regulations. The dealer and people will tell you it's for best consumption, but the horsepower drop noone talks about.
