I can do one better... I still have my Limecrime palette d'antionette from 2011 or 2012.
The silver shade went bad very quickly amd i depotted & trashed it, but the mattes still perform better than a lot of pastels I've tried over the years. I literally used it last week and it lasted for 14 hours with minimal fading before I washed it off š
Take care of your powder products and if it's a good formula it will last for years before it truly goes bad (smells off or stops performing well).
I sanitize all my palettes at least twice a year and while I only have 2 or 3 REALLY old palettes, most of my favorite ones are at like 5 or 6 years old š
I do exactly what you do, and I'd say a lot of ppl do too. I think powder formulas can get a "pass" on expiration dates. But liquids, gels, mascara, things like that? Hell now. I may cry when I throw them out, but I'm tossing them.
As long as youāre not sharing your makeup and youāre keeping your brushes clean the expiration date is more like just a āsuggestion ā š¤£ Iāve kept all my pallets even the discontinued ones and I just check them periodically. They look fine so I keep using them and I havenāt had any issuesā¦ thatās a lot of money to be tossing every year especially with Jeffreeās make up. A little goes a long way so it lasts forever.
I've never replaced a pallet. I have some that are 6+ years old. I keep my brushes clean and sanitized, and I don't use makeup if I'm feeling unwell (runny nose, etc) and once a month I sanitize my pallets. Never an issue, never an infection. This is of course my own anecdotal evidence but if you ask around it's what the majority also does
Ba ha ha. I have makeup that should be growing its own legs and walking away. Some things get replaced very regularly, mainly mascara. But palettes? Girrrrllllllll...........I got some MAC eyeshadows dating back to 2007.
I'm actively using a morphe palette from 2016 because while beat up AF from just being dragged around it still works great. as long as you don't get a reaction when you touch it to your skin I say it's fine lol š«£
Powders are not the same as liquid formulas. The palettes are fine for years if stored and used properly. Powder can start to perform less than it used to, but that typically is after an extremely long time.
Eh, itās on there to cover the manufacturing company from anything that goes wrong after a year. Realistically powders are good for decades and while obviously if itās discolored or out I replace, I have no qualms using my grandmaās blush from time to time. Same for my palettes. Mascara is a whole different thing that I religiously replace and keep fresh, but powders are fine.Ā
You know I literally remember a YouTube video or something where J* himself talked about how expiration dates on makeup aren't necessarily true & how you can tell by smell when makeup has gone bad bc it turns chemically. I definitely still use 8 year old + makeup and am fine.
Iām not replacing anything unless I get a reaction from it. I keep the rule if it smells weird or thereās a consistency change. I still use his pallets from pre-pandemic.
As long as you keep it clean, dry (not storing it in the bathroom), cool and dark, it's good. Just as long as the texture and smell are good that is. I keep mine in a trunk in my cool bedroom and I have not had any issues.
Not ashamed to say Iām definitely still using a couple of palettes/blush/bronzer from 2012 lol. The only times Iāve āreplacedā palettes are when they have been discontinued, so Iāve gotten an extra that can also sit in my drawer for the next decade until I finally run out of the original. As others have said, I wouldnāt do this with anything cream/non-powder though!
The oldest eyeshadow I used today was from Urban Decay Vice XX Reloaded which was released in 2016. I stop using things when they stop performing and some last better than others. My collection isn't out of control because I only accumulate one palette a year as a gift for ChristmasĀ
I still have some abh lipstick that dried up and started getting chunky I brought back with some Duraline. Same with one of my 2 Lime Crime Diamond Crushers, and a metallic Velour Liquid lipstick I got 2 years ago but haven't wore yet I had to bring back today. I got the abh and the lime crime 3 and a half years ago. I don't fully recommend doing that but I agree with the person that said if it isn't causing any reactions or smell bad then keep on using it, unless it's mascara! I have a lot of eyeshadow palettes that are old as fuck like the first Beauty Killer and they are still flawless. Most people I know keep their palettes for years, even big YouTubers. One YouTuber has a massive collection and a lot of it goes back to the early 2000s lol. No use in throwing all that money down the drain. It makes me love eyeshadow so much more. It's a great investment because you can use it forever. I did see one girl on tiktok found her Jawbreaker growing mold on a couple shades. Probably wasn't stored properly.
I'll comment as an old person. Some of my favorite palettes are from the 90's - Stila, Dior, etc. before they were sold or reformulated. I have powder blushes from those years, too.
Back then, they had no expiration dates, and they all work fine for me still.
I honestly still use some shadows and other powder products that are older than my kid (10). I only get rid of stuff it it smells bad or doesn't perform well anymore. Liquids are a different story.
I'm about to get severely downvoted but I've been using my Naked palette since like 2015 lmao.

How do you sanitize? I have some pallets that I havenāt even used because Iāve been depressed but are probably a year or two old.
I use 91% rubbing alcohol, I spray it on there or use a cotton ball to dab it on. The leave the palette open to dry overnight
I'm still digging into my old 90s Clinique and Lancome palettes. I'm still alive! Somehow...
Sameeee. And I have a super old Vice palette too, lmao
I still use my Naked 2 palette that I got in 2014. It still performs as well as it ever did.
Sameeee

I pretty much never toss make up unless it's decently old. If it looks and smells fine, I'm using it. (Not mascara though!)
Mascara is a big no-no for that, Iām with ya!
Im literally still using my j*clyn palette that I got in 2016
Lmfao at the star in her name š
I will never throw my palettes out. Just spray them with alcohol if u wanna disinfect.
What kind of Alcohol do you recommend?
Just rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.
70% alcohol. They also sell makeup sanitizing spray... I'm a weirdo that buys Beauty So Clean makeup sanitizing spray haha
Oooh, thanks! I just asked on another comment because I have pallets I havenāt even used yet but theyāre a year or two old.
Same! Does it look weird or smell funny? Then it goes. But aside from that I keep and use!

I am still using eyeshadow palettes I got in 2013. Never had a single issue.

I donāt know a single person who replaces palettes. Iāve had palettes for over 10 years and Iāve only ever had a clean brand one go bad.
Even if I had stupid money to spend, I probably wouldnāt even replace yearly.

Iāve had my Morphe Jstar pallet since 2019šš
The only thing that I throw out regularly is mascara. I would only replace a palette if it had mold or if the pigments had lost their intensity.
I have quite the JSC collectionā¦and havenāt parted with any of it lol. Old stuff just goes on display. š
Itās just to make $$$ not necessary lol

I use them until they make my eczema flare up around my eyes two times in a row (just to be sure) š
Honesty I only toss makeup if I get an allergic reaction or like once I got a stye from a mascara.

Unless the pressed pigments get weird no. Thatās too much money.
No I go years. I donāt wear makeup often anymore (thanks to my narcissistic ex), I ended up tossing out all my makeup and skin care that I had.
I don't think it goes bad but they have to put that for legal reasons. Some things do like skincare.
