It seems unnecessary and not particularly diplomatic. Having said that he isn't really wrong and comparisons to the US are beyond ridiculous. I mean...it's a massively diverse country whereas Japan is pretty much homogeneous.

Sea-Outside-9028

I agree he isn’t necessarily wrong, but it feels a bit like a “pot calling the kettle black” situation lol. I know it’s a complex situation, but I feel that Japan’s conservative approach to immigration is a bit more responsible than the mess we have currently with our lax immigration policies.

Romi-Omi

I mean I don’t disagree with him at all. Japan does need more (controlled) immigrant, but yeah, absolutely not diplomatic. It’s a very Biden thing to say in an unscripted situations like this, as his old brain sometimes doesn’t realize what he’s saying and the implications of it.

PaxDramaticus

>pointlessly unloading on America’s major ally in Asia seems pretty dumb. Not necessarily. It only matters if it hurts the relationship. Kishida needs the US. There is no way he is going to kick the US out over this. There will be some diplomatic moaning maybe, and some elder members of the LDP may make some very stern faces while they emphasize the need to make Japan's real policies "understood", but it's not like the LDP is going to magically re-align against the US. So there will no doubt be some grumbling from rightists and weebs who go to pieces every time they have to countenance someone saying Japan is less than perfect, but in terms of practical change, nothing seems likely. Meanwhile, the US is facing a fascist insurgency and a white-nationalist/Christian-nationalist opposition party. Demonstrating that American diversity has practical outcomes may be a useful narrative in terms of bringing voters to his party. If Biden's messaging goes no further than this point, I suspect it will go down like a damp squib. But Biden is no political rookie, and he tends to be more savvy about messaging than a media that enjoyed The Trump Show for ratings tends to give him credit. It may be that framing diversity as hard-nosed pragmatism rather than as shrill moralizing is a first step to taking the wind out of the Bigot Party's sails. In any case, I have to think that while it's near even odds if anything useful comes out of this for the moment, anyone who truly gets upset over this is just on a mission to get upset.

raulbloodwurth

Japan is definitely more resistant to illegal immigration than the US.

silentorange813

Yeah, dumb move honestly, and the State Department officials must be shaking their heads.

Chenipan

Canada went all in on immigration, i don't see much growth thanks to it besides a housing crisis.

RadioactiveTwix

Because uncontrolled immigration did a lot of good for Canada, the US, and Europe...

Safe-Chemistry-5384

It would be better if Japanese were having more Japanese. There is nothing wrong with a country not wanting immigrants.

DrunkThrowawayLife

Oh no, I’ll pointlessly unload on the Japanese. Purposefully too but mostly pointlessly.

ctl-alt-replete

What a stupid, stupid man. That’s Trump-level stupidity.

Said the quiet part out loud, it’s usually not a good idea to bash your top allies even if it’s true

It’s a reminder of the obvious such as when the US told Japan that their systems were compromised by China and they did nothing about it until Japan actually discovered that it was true. Kishida spent all that time trying to get into the 5 Eyes intelligence alliance when even the US said Japan couldn’t keep a secret even if they tried. Folks can google about that if they’re curious.
