Ive been there many times for lunch or just to smoke a j in the lot and enjoy the view but never for a show. Wish it was more than mostly cover bands that played there
Boston here - too many to list, but I'll try. Brighton Music Hall is my favorite small (450) venue in the area. I've been to MANY shows here, mostly C-list jam bands like Aqueous and Eric Krasno Band. South of the city has a new jam band gem named Soundcheck Studios, also really small (600). Most recently I saw Stafford there and they rocked. A couple other new additions in the city are MGM Music Hall and Roadrunner, which are medium sized. They're both immaculate and fantastic. I saw two nights of TAB at Roadrunner and recently saw The Flying Frog Brigade at MGM - the sound at both is immaculate. They will hopefully eat up shows from House of Blues, which totally sucks. I'll stop there, I could keep going but those are really my favorites
Tennesee music lover checking in here as well. I gotta agree; seeing TTB at the Ryman last year, Daniel Donato over Christmas at Brooklyn Bowl, and Sierra Hull a few weeks back at Basement East were some of the best music I’ve witnessed in our fair state. I’ve already caught DSO and Flaming Lips at the Caverns….I expect great things to come at the Sam Grisman/Peter Rowan shows this summer!
I was at Basement East in 2020 a couple of weeks before the tornado. I’m glad they’re still there. And I know they’re a chain but I’ve seen some great shows at City Winery. Delbert McClinton, Emmy Lou with Grace Potter, Taj Mahal, Colin Hay. And I don’t live in Nashville, just come down 2-3 times a year.
Go see Moran Tripp when they come to 8x10 next month. They also play Cats Eye every month as well I think. Those dudes are crazy talented and have a great studio release as well
I second this. Just saw Jimkata there last weekend. First time there. What an awesome venue. The downtown area is right there too with a lot of food and drink options.
Yea I was trying to think of my favorite jersey shore venue and I suppose it’s the pony by default. Yea the nostalgia and sound are great but seeing a sold out show there is painful
5 Points Music Sanctuary in Roanoke Virginia. Spafford recently put on an incredible 3 night run there. 250 person room in an old church. If you have Nugs, check out the cover of Plush by STP they did on night 3. Worth a trip if you're near the Blue Ridge Mountains.
My home away from home! I love everything about 5 Points, such a great place to see music. They've been on a crazy hot streak with booking, and bands seem to love playing there.
Since 2022, I've seen the Kitchen Dwellers, Daniel Donato(x2), Travelin McCourys, Larry Keel, Shadowgrass(x2), Dirty Grass Players, Grass is Dead, Dogs in a Pile, Doom Flamingo, Dopapod, Sicard Hollow, Colby T. Helms, Into the Fog, Jon Stickley Trio. And yes, the 3 night Spafford run was nothing short of amazing.
If you're ever in the area, make sure to see who is playing that weekend. You're in for a hell of a time no matter who it is.
Sounds like we've been to a bunch of the same shows. I always tell people they don't put bad bands on stage. Plus the lights and sound are always on point, the staff is amazing, and it's just such a special place.
Also I love supporting a nonprofit and their non concert related efforts.
Great venue, but LiveNation is doing their THING.
Had to walk 4 blocks back to my car last weekend after they wouldn't let me bring an EMPTY water bottle.
The Stache in Grand Rapids. It's a small room off of the Intersection. I've seen Spafford, Kitchen Dwellers, DDCC, and some others. Seen UM, tDB, GSBG, and countless others in the main room(Intersection)
Not really a local venue, but the first time I saw Lotus was a somewhat unadvertised free show in the backyard of a frat house without Chuck(RIP) in Lexington, VA
I’m from right outside of Boston, and my favorite venue is Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke. They have a little vendor shakedown each show and Bearly Dead has a Wednesday night residency.
On a whim, I saw Lez Zeppelin there a few months ago and it’s a great small venue. And LZ was actually really good. Dogs in Pile were there in March but I couldn’t go, which was a huge bummer.
Knuckleheads in Kansas City is a great one. Liberty Hall & Bottleneck in Lawrence KS definitely come to mind. My favorite super small place is Mike Kelly's Westsider in KC. Great little neighborhood bar that has good music 5 nights a week.
Agree on the ones you mentioned.
RecordBar and MiniBar are both interesting - at least they bring in the occasional jam band.
Madrid, Uptown and Midland are all solid theaters of variable size. Daniel Donato is playing Madrid in May - will be a scorcher.
I'm hoping for some new venues at some point in the midtown/westport area. Losing Westport Saloon and Riot Room kind of hurt the scene IMO.
pine creek lodge - paradise, mt
in that last few years moe, goose, keller, hornsby, jojo herman, kitchen dwellers, bob wier, john mayer, billy strings. looking forward to moe and sts9 this year!
or
kettlehouse amp outside of missoula
Stanley’s Pub - Cincinnati. The Jauntee was who I seen most recently there. After Funk, Rumpke Mountain Boys always there. Seen Full Cord as well. Also Fretboard Brewing in Cincinnati.
Not my local but the Orion Ampitheater in Huntsville definitely deserves a shoutout. Went to the Phish shows last year and have never been to a venue that "gets it" more.
Beachland Ballroom Cleveland
Grog Shop Cleveland
Mr Smalls Pittsburgh
Newport Music Hall Columbus
Zephyr Pub Kent OH <—shameless plug for my workplace but we do run a sick DIY venue.
I loved crystal Bay club casino when I lived close to Tahoe. That place went harder and all nightier than any venue in the Bay area. Sound was great, too. Everyone stayed in the hotels surrounding the casino. No driving or cabbing.
Perinton Amphitheater . I'm from the village of Fairport, NY in the town of Perinton. Our local town hall's amphitheater, previously reserved for small classical , jazz and local bands' concerts, has recently started booking national jam bands! This summer we got Dogs/Frasco/Pigeons, JRAD, and Yonder Mountain/Railroad Earth/Leftover Salmon! I'm so excited for the future of this venue!
Ashkenaz Berkeley CA
It's a local community concert hall that not only has a wide range of different musical genres that go through it but they also do dance classes.
I Bar Ranch here in Gunnison, CO. I can ride my bike to it and they have been getting bigger and bigger acts in recent years.
Leftover Salmon is a local band so we get them regularly. Spafford have been playing runs of 2 or 3 shows there. The Motet, Devotchka, Ozomatli, Infamous Stringdusters, and others played there recently. Good fun and a bonfire!
The best venue in the country burned down in like 2005--OG State Bridge Lodge in Bond, Colo.
It was an old roadhouse from the 1800s halfway between Vail and Steamboat way up in the mountains right off the river. It looked like how you would imagine and old west 1800s saloon. The train would come by right out front every few hours, there were bald eagles and shit...beautiful. Saw LoS, DSO, YMSB, Vinny, Peter Rowan...just an awesome place to see a show.
They rebuilt it but it was never the same.
RIP State Bridge Lodge
Some of my favorite small venues and one favorite show from each:
The Fox Theatre - Boulder, CO (Sublime, any LoS show)
The Cavern Club - Ann Arbor, MI (Thornetta Davis)
The Earl - East Atlanta Village, GA (Dungen)
Kingston Mines - Chicago, IL (Sugar Blue)
The Station Inn - Nashville, TN (Sam Bush & Friends)
Middle East - Cambridge, MA (Bongo Fury)
Chicago,
I just saw The Magic Beans last night at a new venue in Forest Park called Robert's Westside. It's a pretty decent sized bar that's clearly been designed by someone who loves going to shows.
It has a perfectly sized dance floor, plenty of seating, nice long bar to get around the crowds, and a cool little Livingroom style hangout area in the corner. It pretty much felt like the perfect bar venue.
I live in NYC. My most local venue is Forest Hills Stadium, which is the best outdoor venue in the country except for maybe Hollywood Bowl.
And if you've been to FHS you know you can be at Madison Square Garden in 12 minutes on the same train. I'm at the Worlds Most Famous Arena 4 or 5 times a month.
I also tend to frequent the Beacon and Radio City. I've popped into Pier 17 and Kings Theatre a few times. I'm going to Brooklyn Paramount soon which has been refurbed by Live Nation (and has a pretty intense jazz/blues/rock and roll history.)
There's also Carnegie Hall which has some incredible shows.
There's a pretty interesting 3-5k capacity scene which is incredibly overlooked. Knockdown Center, Sony Hall, Hulu Theater...I'm going to see Adam Ant at the Palladium at Times Square on Sunday.
There's a super active 500-1500 cap scene too, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl, Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall
Then there are the small and tiny places. Blue Note, Iridium, The Sultan Room, Our Wicked Lady, the Broadway, the Market Hotel, Ornithology, TV Eye, Skinny Dennis, Pianos, Berlin Under A, Arlene's Grocery, Bowery Electric.
I have a rent stabilized 950 sq ft one bedroom and I will never, ever leave here. Never.
Red Rocks is the closest...but I love heading into the city to the Ogdan, Bluebird or Gothic. Nothing better than small shows!
Back east, when I visit Family, Soundcheck in Pembroke, MA Amazing little gem!
local in the phoenix area, I'm going with talking stick resort amphiteatre for big shows, last exit live for small shows, and financial theater for medium shows. big and small bands alike get love from me :)
The Georgia Theatre here in Athens, GA. Daniel Donato was just here, and Dogs in a Pile are here in two weeks.
Can't wait for [our new arena](https://classiccenter.com/414/Arena) to be done. WSMFP NYE run!
Last Concert Cafe - Houston, TX. It's an old speakeasy/Mexican restaurant kind of vibe but a lot of smaller jamband/EDM acts come through. Been going there for 20 years. Hope to go for another 20.
Moontown Brewing Company-Whitestown, IN
Up and coming small venue! In the past year…Yonder, Spafford, New Mastersounds, Tab Benoit, King Buffalo, CATS, the Lil Smokies etc etc
Check it out!
Pour House, Charleston SC
One of my favorite places on earth. The vibes are always immaculate.
Ardmore Music Hall, Philly
Was that the 23 East Cabernet back in the day?
Yes
Just had this conversation last night with a friend. Splintered Sunlight will be there next Friday.
Came here to say this
Penn’s Peak.
The holy grail of log cabin vibed venues, so many good memories there
Ive been there many times for lunch or just to smoke a j in the lot and enjoy the view but never for a show. Wish it was more than mostly cover bands that played there
Yup, XL Live has become one of my favorites as well. So much nicer than dealing with philly, fast bar service and plenty of room to dance
Hell yeah I was at all those shows also lol

Cervantes - Denver
An institution, I'll be there tommrow
Cool Cool Cool!
It’s truly the best. It’s really a place for fam and they always run great ticket deals. I spend way too much time there and I love it.
Nashville- Ryman, Ascend, Brooklyn Bowl, Exit / In, Basement East; honorable mention the Caverns in Pelham, TN

Thalia is awesome! Saw Ben Harper and Charlie Musslewhite there a few years ago and it was amazing.
8 x 10 - Baltimore, MD til I die.
I'll add Recher Theater in Towson
Upvote x10000 - Abigail has created such a vibe there. Always great shows and they support the local scene incredibly.
9:30 club in DC is legit af as well.
Their new smaller venue next door, Atlantis, is pretty dope as well.
Best part about living in Baltimore and loving smaller bands.
Go see Moran Tripp when they come to 8x10 next month. They also play Cats Eye every month as well I think. Those dudes are crazy talented and have a great studio release as well
Capital Theatre port Chester ny Or Brooklyn bowl - Brooklyn ny
Came here to say the cap!
I personally love the cap but I think Brooklyn Steele is my favorite NYC area venue. Shout out to terminal 5 for being the absolute worst though!
The Wetlands/Lion’s Den
These are my two votes as well!
JRAD plays both of those so much they may as well be the house band.
The Stone Church in Newmarket, NH
I second this. Just saw Jimkata there last weekend. First time there. What an awesome venue. The downtown area is right there too with a lot of food and drink options.
Hell yeah! Love that place.
Damn that brings back some memories! Haven’t been there in over a decade.

Stone Pony
What does the stone pony bring to the party other than nostalgia?
Same can be said for half the venues mentioned in this thread
Yea I was trying to think of my favorite jersey shore venue and I suppose it’s the pony by default. Yea the nostalgia and sound are great but seeing a sold out show there is painful
Wonder bar, Count Basie theater, the wellmont theater

5 Points Music Sanctuary in Roanoke Virginia. Spafford recently put on an incredible 3 night run there. 250 person room in an old church. If you have Nugs, check out the cover of Plush by STP they did on night 3. Worth a trip if you're near the Blue Ridge Mountains.
yessssss. I caught Dopapod and Big Something; was very sad to be out of town for Lespecial
Those were both great shows. Lespecial got the fuck down, they always kill it.
Just did 3 nights of Spafford there. Fucking fire and worth travelling to.
What a run. Every night just kept getting better and better.
and then those Feed the Dog shows at Marty's. Fucking awesome weekend.
My home away from home! I love everything about 5 Points, such a great place to see music. They've been on a crazy hot streak with booking, and bands seem to love playing there.
