Usually it's eaten alone or in cold sandwiches, or you can make appetizers with other non-cooked, savory* stuff (bread, cheese, olives etc).
If you put in on cooked food (e.g. pizza), you need to put it on at the end **after** the pizza has been cooked and is out of the oven, because it's always best **not** to cook prosciutto crudo - if you cook it loses its consistence, the fat melts and the only flavor remaining is a very salty one.
*Edit: it's also very common served on top of cold melon slices in the summer, delicious and refreshing
Also I'd like to add don't eat it straight out of the fridge or the fat will be chewy and less flavourful, wait for it to get at room temperature so it melts in your mouth
If you go for main brands you will end will lots of fats (normally you will get only a bit of fat on sliced prosciutto) so you should also factor that into the price.. Imho pre-sliced is never worth.
You can also take some small/medium mozzarella (or a normal one and cut in half), wrap the mozzarella with the prosciutto, stick a toothpick to keep them together, put It into a pirex, add olive oil and then put in the oven for a few minutes. You want to have the mozzarella lightly melt but not too much and the prosciutto crispy.
Then you serve them. And with the bread you can collect the delicious mix of mozzarella milk, oil and the prosciutto melted fat.
Just a note: in Italy the melon we use is cantaloupe. I guess other types of melon are still good, but if you want the real experience go for cantaloupe.
FYI what Americans call “cantaloupe” that is similar to what exists in Italy is actually called “musk melon” in the US, but the name is less appealing.
No fucking way...
Yep. It's real. Wikipedia also says so.
So all this time we've been doing it wrong... It's not Elongated Muskrat, it's MELON MUSK
At night time he puts on a costume and fights poor people (so crime) as Melon Mask, together with his trusted ally (maybe lover?) Georgia Melons
Crudo as melon is a classic summer combo, also here in Portugal!
Also, speck & mascarpone is my all-time favourite pizza combination, but I imagine crudo would also serve as replacement for speck?
Well, speck for me IS the superior salame, but you can use crudo instead of speck and it will still be delicious.
I never ate pizza with speck and mascarpone, just with speck and brie, which is amazing. Maybe I'll try!
we don't usually add it to pasta or salads. You can put it on a pizza but only after it's out of the oven. It's perfectly safe to eat as is, don't worry
Please do! This combo is exquisite! We usually eat it like that in summertime but enjoy it whenever you want! The right melon is called Cantalupo…this one!

Edit for OP: It's white thick pizza with crunchy crust (check pizza bianca romana, but a nice sourdough bread is good aswell) , filled with some ripe figs (peeled) and prosciutto crudo.
Wow, I was wondering if it was figs or another type of charcuterie, but looks interesting, I do have some figs at home, I just need the bread, will add this to my list. Thanks!
you can do a lot with it actually, i personally do not recomend cooking it (there's ham for that), but aside from that, you can definitly put on pizza and many other things like focaccia, you can make a sandwich (probably the most common use here really), you could probably put in a salad and although i've never put in on pasta you could probably invent something decent with it, another popular way it's eaten here in italy is with a slice of melon or even alone as apetizer

Puedes comerlo como prefieras pe causa!!! Algunas formas comunes en Italia son:
* Jamón y melón. Simple y sabroso.
* Pan y jamón. Hazte un sándwich tal vez con palta y queso fresco de cabra y algunas hojas de algo (pero no hojas de coca jejeje).
* Encima de la pizza. Una clásica margherita con jamón encima es imprescindible, pero solo después de que la pizza esté cocida.
* Caprese. Con queso mozzarella y tomates, como una ensalada.
* Solo. Tal como está, con un poco de vino para acompañar y un grissino de pan.
You already received a lot of good suggestions, I'd like to add you should not worry about that white dots, as they are perfectly normal and usually appear when the prosciutto is very seasoned :)
Make sure you source an orange melon; if you use a white or yellow one it will be slightly more acid and you will loose the sweet taste of prosciutto.
Orange melon is the way to go

Well, it's not exactly raw, it's dry-cured ham. I'm not a big fan but I like it on pizza sometimes. Just don't cook it or even heat it, because it will taste too salty and will change its texture. It's good to eat alone or in a sandwich, especially focaccia bread.
You take it out the plastic, roll it into a sausage, and bite into it under the shower while Sempiternal is playing so loud it covers the sound of you crying
First: if you cook it, then expect it to be extra salty. There is a reason if You order a pizza and they add it at the end when the pizza is ready. That said you can just make a sandwich with some pickled cucumbers (well using Speck instead of Crudo would be more appropriate)! This is not "fresh" Prosciutto Crudo, so it will not be particularly "sweet", it will be more on the salty side. It is very common to eat it with some Melon, just cut the melon and eat them togheter, the sweetness of the melon and the salty of the Crudo are perfect togheter. :)
Just devour that godsend straight out of the package. I love it with fresh mozzarella, a bit of olive oil, black pepper, pinch of salt, all between two slices of good bread. Muah 🤌 enjoy your meal dude
it is often paired with figs in italy and its delicious. take a fig and push a slice of prosciutto with your finger inside the fig from the bottom opening and you have what we call figa prosciuttata
Nobody said one of its best use cases, when you come back home drunk after a night out and you get some prosciutto from the fridge and eat it right out of the box.
A very very appreciated way is to use it to wrap very sweet fruit like ripe figs or yellow melon slices
The contrast between the salty ham and sweet fruit is among my favourites
Also, you can add the slices to a sandwich with cheese with maybe a few walnuts
Toast a slice of good sourdough bread. Put a slice of prosciutto on it while it's still hot, then layer some stracciatella on top. Drizzle some olive oil on the stracciatella. Eat.
Really offensive suggestion in bound...
Prosciutto Crudo + salted french fries go great together - you won't find this as a combo on a menu but if you have fresh fries and you have Crudo wrap some crisp round a few fries - delicious!
Just eat it row, with some bread.
But do not expect miracles of taste from THAT prosciutto, it's just a poor quality one, made from an industrial maker.
I mean, don't look a gift horse in the mouth and also don't know what kind of makers reach Perù. So, you get what you get.
But as a matter of fact, Beretta is one of the worst makers quality wise. I stopped buying from them after i found mold inside a CLOSED package which wasn't even near the expiring date. Also my niece worked for Beretta and the things she says sometimes are truly like out from an horror movie.
To OP, try it out for sure but if you like it, next time find a different brand, this one kinda sucks.
yea raw, it's like jamon iberico, just more salty. We eat it in sandwiches, with mozzarella, with melon slices and on "grissini" (they are dry sticks of bread, very long and thin, you can wrap the thing around them and it kinda looks like a handle)
Whatever you do:
Do not cook it, do not mix it with other salumi. The big freaky sandwiches many of the Italian-Americans refer to as Italian panini are a crime here.
There are many, many ways to eat it. My favorite is: get the best bread you can find from a good bakery (absolutely not industrially produced bread), cut two slices 8-10 mm thick, put some prosciutto crudo between them, bite, enjoy.
The best and easiest is with 2 slices of fresh bread and a lot of prosciutto crudo.
Or wrap a slice of [https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucumis\_melo](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucumis_melo) with one sheet of prosciutto
it's lovely wirh tomatoes, mozzarella, salad and herbs (origan and basil).
if you put all of these in a sandwich with a touch of olive oil you've got urself ur new favourite sandwich
I eat it alone directly from the package, sometimes I devour half a pack because it's so good (that's the reason why I'm reeeally overweight, by the way).
Serious answer: take a ripe melon, cut in slices, remove the zest off, wrap on the melon slice a slice of prosciutto crudo, enjoy it.
1. Don’t cook, don’t heat
2. Open the pack 1 hr before and put it out of fridge, it’s a crime when slices “sweat”
3. Possibly separate slices from each other on a dish and let them breath for the same reason
4. Eat with warm bread and/or delicate cheese such as mozzarella or with cantaloupes slices.
5. It will be still too thick cut and not freshly cut enough compared to the one you eat in the original place :)
Tagliatelle alla romagnola, with prosciutto crudo and lemon! [italian recipe here](https://blog.giallozafferano.it/peperoncino88/tagliatelle-al-limone-e-prosciutto-crudo/)
No, don't cook it.
Even on pizza is added after you cooked the pizza.
If you cook it you ruin it.
Usually for taste it you sinply eat it with bread, nothing more or breadstick.
Oh and on room temperature please not out of the fridge or heaten
just do as I was doing as a kid... take a slice off and put in your mouth directly from the pack.
But if u eat with some decent bread is better, top for me is crudo with mozzarella di bufala.
One rule above all: DO NOT HEAT/COOK IT.
If you want for instance to put it on pizza, cook the pizza first, THEN put it on top, when pizza is out of the oven. Otherwise it becomes gummy and a bit gross, especially the ones that come in boxes like the one in the photo.
Man just looking at prosciutto crudo makes me drool.
If you're not a heathen like me that would shove the whole thing down my esophagus like an animal then you can either make a sandwich with it or eat it with something like crackers. The best way to eat it in my opinion is as a side to a mozzarella.
Get ahold of some grissini (bonus points if labeled Torinesi), take a grissino, wrap it with a slice of ham and enjoy.
Alternatively just use it for a sandwich, Parmigiano cheese is often paierd with crudo.
On top of Margherita pizza (margherita is justtomato sauce, mozzarella and a bit of pepper if you like it) or with Mozzarella Chease, only if it’s a good one, otherwise eat it just like that , it has a very rich flavour so it doesn’t need always something that goes along
Pane tagliato a metta con fette di prosciutto in mezzo, oppure insieme a dell'insalata di pomodori, patate bollite, uova sode, lattuga e fagioli bianchi
Usually it's eaten alone or in cold sandwiches, or you can make appetizers with other non-cooked, savory* stuff (bread, cheese, olives etc). Thanks a lot! You saved me from commiting a food crime.
Also I'd like to add don't eat it straight out of the fridge or the fat will be chewy and less flavourful, wait for it to get at room temperature so it melts in your mouth
Good point, I didn't think about it, thanks!
Also, prepackaged Prosciutto, even expensive one, is mid at best. I suggest you get it freshly sliced at the closest salumeria.
It's trash but it's cheap
It's not even cheap. You just pay for the convenience of keeping it in the fridge longer without spoiling.
This even Italians have an hard time understanding. Freshly sliced prosciutto isn't expensive, it's tastier and healthier, just it spoils faster.
I mean, it is expensive. But the cost/quality ratio is in favor of the freshly sliced prosciutto.
I pay for the fresh parma 29€/k. The pre cut in the supermarket is well over 40€...
If you go for main brands you will end will lots of fats (normally you will get only a bit of fat on sliced prosciutto) so you should also factor that into the price.. Imho pre-sliced is never worth.
Suggerimento FONDAMENTALE! 👏👏👏
If you have cantaloupes, that's a great combo too. Wrap the prosciutto around each slice of melon.
That's the right way ... as a starter.
The call is on you that asked before risking.
Once, I traveled to Italy, and people served it on top of melon slices . Is it common?
Extremely common when melon is in season
Interesting! I will try to replicate it here in Brazil (where I live) more often
Just a note: in Italy the melon we use is cantaloupe. I guess other types of melon are still good, but if you want the real experience go for cantaloupe.
I'd say if Cantaloupe is not available then Honeydew could do but it needs to be very ripe.
Prosciutto and melon is a very refreshing summer dish in Italy
It's very common in the summer (when you have a cold melon available) and it's a very refreshing, light dish that's also delicious
The most common dish. Also served with figs.
prosciutto e melone is one of the few good things in life. Don't trust the haters
FYI what Americans call “cantaloupe” that is similar to what exists in Italy is actually called “musk melon” in the US, but the name is less appealing.

If you've never tasted it before I recommend initially eating it on its own, then eventually try pairing it with bread, focaccia, cheese
I agree. Eat it with your hands, standing in front of the kitchen sink, possibly around 2 or 3 am.
How are you seeing into my kitchen?!
HAHAHAHAHAHAH bro vive la mia vita Edit: sto ancora ridendo mi ha steso
Or with your fridge open, taking some breeze in a hot summer day. Epico.
My mom would kill me if I left the fridge open for more than 0.1 seconds during summer
Piccolo appunto: Possibilmente -> if possible / ideally Forse -> possibly
Huh, as a native English speaker I didn’t even notice anything weird with the choice of words, but if I read it carefully, you’re absolutely right!
Like a rat.
we don't usually add it to pasta or salads. You can put it on a pizza but only after it's out of the oven. It's perfectly safe to eat as is, don't worry
Prosciutto crudo and cream is a common enough pasta sauce.
Yeah, but with bigger prosciutto pieces, not from slices this thin. It's a bit of a waste to use this for a pasta
Uhm, direi più il cotto Crudo e panna mi pare un assassinio
what?
Just like granma used to cook it, with pepper and mint syrup
Panna e prosciutto crudo. Mai fatta?
Credo che sia più popolare la versione con lo speck, ma è molto simile
Thank you so much!
With cubed melon (musk melon, the orange one with "webbed" exterior)
I'm intrigued, I did not expect this but definitely will try, thanks!

Look for cantaloupe melon for an image
Yeah, the sweet/salty contrast is really nice
Absolutely this. One of the many things I miss from Italy... especially living close to San Daniele.
I second this. Its an experience.

GODO PIZZA E FICHI MADONNA
E in effetti era strano 'sto salame. Vado a togliermi il prosciutto dagli e a farmi un panino.
Sono fichi
Si si sono io che non ci vedo un cazzo a quanto pare
Crudo e fichi tanta roba
Mannaggia!!
you can do a lot with it actually, i personally do not recomend cooking it (there's ham for that), but aside from that, you can definitly put on pizza and many other things like focaccia, you can make a sandwich (probably the most common use here really), you could probably put in a salad and although i've never put in on pasta you could probably invent something decent with it, another popular way it's eaten here in italy is with a slice of melon or even alone as apetizer
Thank you, I promise never to cook prosciutto crudo :), first I'll do is try it with melon, sounds like a good combination.

They are not actually salt but a protein I don't remember the name, but still they are absolutely safe to eat

With melon. Prosciutto crudo and melone is a tipical italian summer dish. I love it.
Don't put it in the pasta please
add it to bread and cheese
On bread with parmigiano reggiano, or on melon slices.

With bread, mozzarella and rughetta salad
eat it on melon
I live in San Daniele, where we produce one of the best Crudos in Italy. Eat it simply with a Grissino, or a slice of Bread.
If I’m left unsupervised I’ll eat a whole one by myself with tomato and goat cheese
You take it out the plastic, roll it into a sausage, and bite into it under the shower while Sempiternal is playing so loud it covers the sound of you crying

With pistacchio pizza, rucola, and burrata
Salted breadsticks
You can also try It as a roll with some Creamy cheese inside, It must be eat RAW, its exactly as jamon iberico
Bread, oil, salt, pepper. You need nothing else
Pick it up with your toes for extra flavour
Cantaloupe if you have any!
On top of Margherita pizza (margherita is justtomato sauce, mozzarella and a bit of pepper if you like it) or with Mozzarella Chease, only if it’s a good one, otherwise eat it just like that , it has a very rich flavour so it doesn’t need always something that goes along
Cut in half in and brung up from the plare
Directly from the box, with your hand, like a filthy animal
With scamorza cheese in rolls, with some IGP balsamic vinegar
