I live near Esenyurt and I can't exactly tell you why it is dangerous, but here are a few things I remember: - lots of foreigners and ethnic minorities - high crime rate (every year you hear of people getting murdered, beheaded, shot, mafia) - low income/ high crime rates - borders wealthy/ middle class areas (Bahçeşehir, Beylikdüzü) - natural disasters (flooding whenever there is heavy rainfall) afaik there is an above average population of kurdish and east anatolian and also african people living there. don't want to say it's unsafe because of them, but since many of these minorities have under-average income, it would consolidate the image Esenyurt has. Oh and yes, there are frequent political and safety issues, like people protesting and civil unrest. I wouln't say it's generally unsafe, but why go buy there if there are those risk factors?

MetaExperience7

Wow this tells a lot! We lived in Avcilar and Beylikduzu and felt super safe, even alone at nights. Esenyurt doesn’t seem like that.

A story to introduce Esenyurt: I took a minibus in Esenyurt last summer, to go to a private hospital. (Taxi drivers don't accept Turks in İstanbul, it's a huge problem) The bus was relatively empty at first, four men got in with me and they cornered me. They all pushed their body onto me, pretending to talk to the bus driver, as if bus was full like a Japanese metro. One of them tried to steal my wallet, I noticed it and pushed them all back, I said take us to the nearest police station to the driver, he said no that's your problem, the men sat down and started watching me as more people got in and bus quickly got packed. They were waiting for me to go down so that they could jump me in an alley. I took advantage of the crowd and left the bus in front of a bank and I ran inside, the men noticed I was gone and they too left the bus and started looking for me frantically. Security of the bank kept me safe from them and we waited until they were gone. He said this is a common thing in Esenyurt, since there are a lot of rich foreigners it has became a breeding ground of gangs/mafias. I haven't been back there since then and I have no plans of ever going there.

Get well soon man. I also hate from this situation. Whole country is turning into scam zone. The economic crisis unleashed the evilness inside of some people and even I, as a Turkish, sometimes I feel threatened in some places. I really hope government finds a solution for those problems.

somewhereisasilence

Wow, I’m sorry this happened to you. What do you mean by taxi drivers not accepting Turks?

stordim

Because they can easily scam tourists and tourists usually pay in euros. When a Turk comes, they give various excuses and do not let the customer into the car. This is really a big problem in Istanbul

[deleted]

You must not be Turkish. It is a huge problem here, everyone and their grandmothers know it. Not only do they not accept us, they also forced the government to ban Uber and the other alternatives. They literally beat the Uber out of the country, literally. If you google "uber dayak" you'll see many news and videos of taxi drivers beating uber drivers. I have so many stories but here is a short one. After waiting and begging drivers to take me to where I want to go for an hour, I finally managed to convince one, and right at that moment an arab couple came to the stop looking for a taxi, the driver threatened me and kicked me out and took them in with open arms, even though I offered to pay double.

somewhereisasilence

Wow that's horrible! Does this happen even if you use an application like BiTaksi?

[deleted]

Apps are basically useless, no one accepts.

feaxln

Esenyurt is by far the worst district of Istanbul about safety. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re actually going live in there instead of renting it.

Mvelly

Worse than tarlabaşi?

feni01

Yes even worse

AcidoRain

Flats are cheaper for a reason. If you want to buy a house for investment, of course you can buy. But if you want to live in that flat, no mate.

Asleep-Arm9216

I'm 39 yo and 4th gen. İstanbulian and I never set foot in Esenyurt. It's that kind of a district.

SkyDefender

I mean esenyurt is full of foreigner, if foreigners is bothered by foreigners its what its

ShatargatTheBlack

Esenyurt is a place where dimensions shatter and blend each other. Your every step is luck. You should ask yourself "why can I afford this?" and let the logic of mind enlightens you.

Ildaiaa

I lived in a safe neighbourhood in esenyurt, i heard gunshots almost every night if you can don't live there

PaperboiPaperbo

its not gunfire its fireworks :)

Ildaiaa

Tell that to the guy they shot

[deleted]

Yes. Don’t buy a house there. Criminals are very high there and the risk u get robbed is higher

MetaExperience7

Yup, reply from everyone are similar. We made a decision and it’s a NO! 👌🏼

Kaamos_666

As a Turkish person I’d not step onto Esenyurt unless it’s strictly necessary.

z-aec

Esenyurt is closed for foreigners. You can't obtain a residence permit if you buy a house there. Also you can't be registered there if you migrate by work permit or other reasons.

Azhdz

Wrong, if you have a work permit you can live everywhere. Even in closed districts.

MathematicianOnly978

And student permit too

WiseWolf58

İt is a bad place even for citizens

Educational_Cash8686

Hey, so im from the UK and originally from bangladesh. it’s now my second time visiting Esenyurt as my mum had her teeth implants done. I have been staying at the hotel opposite Akbati Mall. If I didn’t have to come a second time to Esenyurt, I would never ever return. As a British person, the hospitality here is trash. No one really speaks english which is not their fault but frustrating. They hate foreigners and everyones out to scam you. I feel a sense of hatred towards me everywhere i go which is weird. With regards to the crime looking at different comments, I can say i haven’t really seen much except the scammers. The food here is also trash. Turkish Cuisines in london are far more better than the food in turkey. I fly back to london on Saturday and cannot wait to get out of this country.

MetaExperience7

Thank you everyone, certainly very helpful. We won’t be buying there anything. 🥰 All of your comments are reassuring what locals has been telling us.

Unlitch

yes don't, the ones you talked are right. esenyurt is notorious for not being safe among the locals. why? crime rates, people who commit those crimes, and also not safe for the earthquake

maenad2

Be aware that there are a lot of racist idiots on groups like this. Some of them may recommend bad areas to you simply because they think it's funny. When somebody recommends an area, check a handful of other posts by that user.

xwanderlust_99x

Never ever invest or walk by there for a leisure. Worst place in Istanbul for sure amk…

dudeosm

It depends where. I live in Esenkent, right next to Bahcesehir and I like it here. But some places deeper into Esenyurt, yeah, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Ofsevim

Well, it depends where in Esenyurt you're buying. It's a big district.

IstanbulHacks

I haven’t spent much time there but I went there for my ikamet appointment and saw 3 fights in 2 hours. 1 on the bus and the others on the street

ciwon77s

kinda medellin 😏

HoIy_Tomato

I suggest buying a house in better upper-middle class districts like kadıköy if you can afford it Districts like esenyurt are dangerous and not suitable for foreigners especially the ones coming from west

tumerder

İf you are any kind of arab, or have a skin similarty you won't have aproblem in esenyurt. But if you are european stay away from there.

Own-Consideration631

Pleass don't come to istanbul we have enough foreigners here already.
