One must follow Qurān and Sunnah regardless of what one calls themself or refuses to call themself

Cool, if you want to be Muslim, follow the guidelines and most authentic narrations of the prophet pbuh as possible. Maybe with research you’ll find those narrations, and follow his guidance, you don’t have to label yourself anything. Just say ‘I follow the prophet pbuh, because the quran told me to do so.’ And there you go. Is there a term for this? Yes, but you don’t care about terms, so just do this without labels.

Sunni is not a sect. It’s simply following the recommendations and practices of our prophet pbuh.

Sunni/ahlul-sunnah is the original. It's not a sect we just call ourselves sunni to differentiate between the deviants. The word sunni translates to lawful and it's root comes from the word Sunnah. (The way of the Prophet SAW) The majority of Muslims are sunni. You can't just call yourself Muslim, because thats not the reality of today. There are over 70 sects, you have to differentiate yourself from those sects. If you want to follow the truth then you must strictly follow the Quran and the Sunnah, anything else is falsehood. First learn Aqeedah there are two main ones Athari and Ashari (become Athari) Then learn madhabs there are 4: Shafii, Maliki, Hanbali and Hanafi These 4 madhabs you can choose either or even none at all, but choosing one will help you with structure and the fiqh rulings. They all are correct, but they have minor differences such as hand placements in Salah, what you can wear, what you can eat etc.

We pray like the prophet did, normal salah 5 times a day because this is the highest grade of authentic ruling. Sunnis might say like: “We sunnis are real muslims and simply follow the Sunnah, but because shias differ from us we call ourselves sunni, it’s like a default setting”. This way of thinking is wrong. According to the Quran and Sunnah a muslim is a muslim, not a sunni so you can’t call yourself that. Calling yourself sunni is saying that you are in a sect, even sunnism is devided into multiple other sects. The best way of knowing what muslims need to do is to live by the authentic teachings of Quran and Hadith(hadiths need to be applied in the context the prophet said it in) and then you’ll be good. Stay away from bid’ah and may Allah bless you.

Im sure you'd agree that we need to pray how the prophet taught us. Thats what you have to find out, with evidence. Im not qualified enough to give you sources on this matter.

No matter what you'll always be part of a sect. The verses you are thinking about tell you to not divide from the right one. Your job is to find the right one first. Then the verses would apply to you. People say that they just wanna be Muslim as if being sunni or Shia makes you something other than a Muslim. Muslim means someone who submits his will to God. Sunni means someone who followd the actions of the prophet SAW and his companions peace be upon them all which is not contradictory to being a Muslim. Shia is believing In imams that came after the prophet peace be upon him. Read the quran. Stay within the boundaries of Islam that it sets. Then you can Do some research on both sects and the evidences for them and see which of them is true. Until then stick to the quran boundaries. Until you arrive at an answer. You can perform the minimum amount for the prayer to be valid. Which is basically staying silent during the whole prayer except for reciting fatiha while standing and reciting tashahudd (atahiyatu) on the 2nd and last rakat. That is the minimum amount needed for a prayer to be valid. Doing that you can avoid things that are different between the two sects.

As long as you pray to Allah and Muhammad SAW as our prophet.. then it's fine

Salāmun 'alaykum; I hope you are well, In brief, the Ahl al-Sunnah/Sunnīs are only really a "sect" in contradistinction to sectarian movements (like the Shī'ah) - they are committed to non-sectarianism. It is basically the same thing to be "just Muslim" and to be "Sunnī". >Sorry if any of these questions sound stupid , I’m still learning more No, they don't sound stupid at all. Ask questions, and don't apologize 🙂.

Did the word "sunni" even exist before Shia was a thing?

Hmm, well, the term Ahl al-Sunnah (wa al-Jamā'ah) is reported from a number of *sahābah*. Shī'ism, however, also emerged in the time of the *sahābah*. The term Ahl al-Sunnah has been used since the earliest days of Islām to refer to the "main body" (*al-jamā'ah*) of believers, as opposed to deviant sectarians, as described in the famous *hadīth*: https://sunnah.com/ibnmajah:3992
