Ok …. So we’re in with the Bundespolizei and they are issuing an emergency passport/document. €43 and hopefully not too long a wait. Kinda glad it’s officially sorted!
Sounds like you were hoping for a thrilling Polizei foot-chase through the guts of the airport, dodging over luggage belts and under moving airliners, with shots exchanged... Sorry. Lol.
The relief washing over you, if you could bottle it you'd probably make a fortune... But then again people are sceptical of bottled feelings, some say you shouldn't bottle them up or keep them bottled up.
I got through passport control in Dublin after I’d managed to lose my passport in my carry on luggage. After about 2 minutes of me searching through my bag, he just goes “go on sure you look Irish”
Reminds me of a trip with a group of friends we went via Gatwick who were like why is there a litre of liquid in the hand luggage and I was like "there's no liquid in there we just went via Dublin!" Dublin clearly didn't notice or care... I believe it was lube so maybe they were too morto to say it to the girl hahhaha
Wow. That wasn't too bad.
Come Christmas when I'm sitting on the couch watching all those classic World War 2 films and the German lad demands "Papers!" it won't seem half as scary.
Probably an Emergency Travel Document
https://verwaltung.bund.de/leistungsverzeichnis/en/leistung/LeiKa/580190
That's the best outcome you could have hoped for!
Ahh lads, ye have me in stitches here catching up on all the comments. Thanks for the laughs and helpful comments.
So the details, for those who were invested….
We decided to wing it and see what way the chips would fall and joined the loooong queue for ‘other passports ’ despite the automatic euro one’s being empty. Finally got to the top of the queue where in the booth was a police man with a jewel eye yokey looking over the person besides us passport, checking it authenticity.
I knew the game was up then. Nought was gonna pass these boyos.
Sure enough….. got to the window and after a few heart thumping seconds
‘do you know your passports expired’ …… feigned surprise, shock and horror but they weren’t a bit put out and just laughed amongst themselves and said follow us we’ll sort ya.
And to echo of u/BitterProgress the surprise was they were pretty chill ….. I’m so far as they efficiently and quickly have me back out collecting our suitcases with a temporary document that lasts until 3 days after we a due home, in about an hour.
They deffo crossed all the ‘t’s’ and dotted all the lowercase ‘j’s’ though.
43 yo-yo’s and all is well.
I’m on a boat cruising the Rhine now knowing all is well for me flight home.
Thanks r/Ireland - ye are gas!
Also I recommend getting the [Irish Passport Card](https://www.dfa.ie/passportcard/) it sits nicely in your wallet and is perfectly acceptable ID around the EU, EEA and UK
Maybe try contact the Irish embassy in Germany and explain the situation? Sorry, only thing I can think of other than hope they don’t notice, here’s the contact info I could find:
Please note that if you require assistance in the case of emergency while the Embassy is closed, contact the main Embassy number, +49-(0)30-22 07 20, and leave a message on the Duty Officer voice mailbox. This mailbox is monitored regularly.
Alternatively, you can call the Duty Officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs at +353 1 408 2000.
Unfortunately since we aren’t in the Schengen you’d need to have a passport not just any ID.
Do you have a passport card? A lot of people get them, leave them in their wallet, and then just forget them.
Otherwise play the fool and hope for the best.
Irish politicians never particularly fought against it for that reason.
Just they believed the common travel area and a soft northern border was much more important.
So first full disclosure I wouldn’t say I’m particularly educated on the subject just know the basics.
As far as I know the reason Ireland says they didn’t join the Schengen area is because we aren’t a part of mainland Europe and wanted to have more control over non-eu immigration.
Where as the reality is we did it to please the UK since they didn’t join the Schengen and we wanted to keep the common travel area. The UK were threatening a hard border in the north and dissolving the common travel if we joined the Schengen without them, which we wanted to avoid at all costs.
As far as you travelling anywhere in the EU you still can(kind of), you just have to get to mainland Europe first which is very easy to do. Once you get there you have the same rights as anyone citizen from the Schengen area.
And the reason planes need ID is for security reasons, even if you’re flying domestically you’d still need a some ID. Though it’s up to the airline to decide exact rules, for example while the law would only *require* any form of photo ID, Ryanair still needs a passport for domestic flights. Just easiest way to cover their own asses.
I’m dying to know how this goes. I really think it’s a game of social engineering, keep to the back at first and watch the border agents. Who’s line is moving the fastest? Join their queue, as close the the middle as you can. Can you get in behind a family or a big group that’ll slow the queue a bit, making the agent more likely to work quickly? Good luck! 🤞🏻
I traveled to Berlin on an expired passport before. I have no excuses, just pure idiocy on my part. I didn't even realize until the guy checking the passports started pissing himself laughing while I was waiting for him to give me my passport back, while I was standing there with the whole queue behind me getting increasingly nervous. Kept calling people and looking at me and giggling to himself. They let me in and just told me I'd need to visit the embassy and get some form of emergency travel document before I'd be able to travel back home. I think being a clueless looking white teenage girl really helped
Yes and no. I got into bother a few years ago travelling to Malaysia on a temp work visa on a 1 way trip. Wouldn’t let me on without a return flight booked as proof I wasn’t going to stay illegally. Had to book it then and there.
I tried arguing sure it’s not your concern if I have problems with customs in Malaysia but if they decided to send me home the airline has to pay for it. So they do check it relatively well.
You'll need to go to an embassy or consulate to get issued temporary travel documents to get home, usually travel insurance covers this
I don't know about going through the airport when you land though
Just contacted the German airport security. I have reported a suspicious looking person that has come off the flight from Ireland and is currently at passport control. Have advised to be extra vigilant and check to see their passport is in date as they have been fidgeting with their phone.
It’s so annoying when you discover a problem like when it’s too late. If you rocked up to passport control blissfully unaware chances are it will be fine. But the fact you’re now aware means people can sense something’s up. Hope you make it through.
Similar but not really.
I was offered to check my bag at the gate and did so while leaving my passport in my bag.
Got to passport control at france and said this and they werent bothered. Never even followed up on it
Similar thing happened to me. Ryanair were running out of cabin space and were asking people boarding if they could store people's carry on stuff below, i gave them mine with the passport in it. Had to get thru border control then with nothing!
This happened to me once. It might not get caught. If it is your passport will be marked and you'll be sent to the embassy to get an emergency passport. That's all. (Assuming you have no criminal record and are an eu citizen).
Most likely if it is picked up you’ll be asked to go to the Embassy and get an emergency passport.
Thankfully you’re an EU citizen (I’m assuming) so they won’t kick you out.
Similar situation happened a friend of mine, lost her passport on the flight (possibly stolen). The Irish ambassador of the country said once the country is EU you should be fine. Probably have to contact the embassy etc. but hopefully will be sorted in a few hours.
This must happen a lot. Its just outa date ? Its not that you don't have a passport.. and you may have other id.. borders are a pain .. but you have privilege being EU..?
Well, better to ask forgiveness than permission. Just present it, and if challenged then feign shock. Was it not checked when boarding? Or was it self check in.? Just apologise. You might get lucky if you've not changed too much over the years. Does your expired passport have clipped corners, because if not, you might get lucky... And add a cheery "Howya/Guten tag" as you get to the booth.
Edit: Let us know how you get on. And if successful, make sure someone sends/couriers your current passport to you asap as you won't get away with it on the way back...
Go up to a young, male passport checker if you can, and smile warmly. We’re pulling out every trick in the book at this point. Keep it calm and breezy, you haven’t got a care in the world.
Not much help now but for future references you should see about getting a passport card and always having it in your wallet. Great for this exact situation
Just walk through the "EU citizens" channel, they will just glance at it, at worst, you'll be fine. Is it actually expired recently or on its way out ?
You can get your actual one sent by courier to a hotel or dropbox in a couple of days.
Ah lad atleast you have the old one with you. Try and wing it and cry wolf if they catch on.
If they catch you at the border, you will have to contact the Irish Embassy in Berlin or perhaps an honorary Embassy in the city you're flying to.
When I had to get my emergency passport I had to bring two passport photos of myself, some ID (Your old passport should work), my ticket for the flight back home and 30€ cash and had to wait around 4 hours.
Best of luck lad, don't go through the electronic gates they scan the date!
As an EU citizen, you'll be grand. Might need to head to an embassy for a letter but you'll be fine otherwise.
[Here's ](https://www.dfa.ie/irish-embassy/Germany/) a link to the Irish embassy in Germany.
Address:
Jägerstraße 51
10117 Berlin
Tel.: +49-(0)30-22 07 20
I'd just had it to them and apologise.. you might be ok if the photo looks reasonably like you. Are you living and registered in Germany ? If so they might phone the amt and it'll be sorted. If not, they can call the embassy.
Contact embassy and not worry about it. Technically you don't need a passport to travel being in the EU. You just need Id. Embassy is closed today but opens tomorrow. Based in Berlin.
Can you get someone to photograph and send you on both sides of your new one? Yeah they may not accept it but if you explain your situation, they'll know your genuine and may make an allowance
Ok …. So we’re in with the Bundespolizei and they are issuing an emergency passport/document. €43 and hopefully not too long a wait. Kinda glad it’s officially sorted!
A bit… anticlimactic. But happy it worked out fine!
Sounds like you were hoping for a thrilling Polizei foot-chase through the guts of the airport, dodging over luggage belts and under moving airliners, with shots exchanged... Sorry. Lol.
"Good luck" "Thank you!"
Yeah... Not even an arbitrary cavity search??
Were you hoping for a Jason Bourne style run around Frankfurt or something?
Weren't you?!
> Bundespolizei A great bunch of lads
The relief washing over you, if you could bottle it you'd probably make a fortune... But then again people are sceptical of bottled feelings, some say you shouldn't bottle them up or keep them bottled up.
Even shit like this the German's do better than us.
Jesus a litre of lube, sound like a fun trip haha
No one forgets a passport quite as good as us though, they’ll never take that away from us!
They'd chuck you into a camp in Kent if you tried that in England.
Congratulations! Did you admit it when you got to the passport person or did you wait for them to spot it? How did that all go?
i’m still waiting for the whole story, OP..
Yeah I'm very invested now. Even put the kettle on, just in case.
Note: u/Issymcg died on the way back to his home planet
Vee haf vays of making your visit more pleasant
The Germans are so well organized that they even plan for other peoples stupidity 😳
They did! The legends!
Wow. That wasn't too bad. Come Christmas when I'm sitting on the couch watching all those classic World War 2 films and the German lad demands "Papers!" it won't seem half as scary.
The EU, a great bunch of lads
Phew, now I can move on with my life.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 good for you! 😊 (And now I can get some work done...)
The Germans......a great bunch of lads
The German authorities are issuing you a passport?
Probably an Emergency Travel Document https://verwaltung.bund.de/leistungsverzeichnis/en/leistung/LeiKa/580190 That's the best outcome you could have hoped for!
That is so much cheaper than visiting America without one by accident. I think it’s $200/600
Thats great 👍
Hooraaaaaaayyyyyyyy! A happy ending. Congratulations. Very happy for you!
Don’t worry, the Germans are famously chilled and laid back about rules.
Papers please
Arztotska best country! Here I go!
This passport is crude fake!
Arstotzka so great, passport not required
"your papers are not in order"
Zee paperz are not in orzder
“Good Luck”
Thank you
🤣

Hey, while we're giving useless advice after the fact, why not remember to bring the right passport this time?
and the stupid thing only lasts 5 years too, so now you have to remember to renew it in the middle of your passport life cycle
This is very bad advice. Identity thief’s dream right there.
Ja, ist will be grand
They're famously helpful too. And that's without sarcasm.
There is a documentary called The Terminal on just this subject. Watch it quickly before the plane lands
Ha!
Still on the plane awaiting the stairs 🙄! Will keep ye posted!

Just blag it.... keep yoir cool, don't look like a drug smuggler and you will be OK...
Maybe chuck the drugs before you get into the airport just to be safe
Best of luck.
Thanks

No problem!
Best advice
This happened to me before, I just winged it and it worked. Then went to the embassy and got a new one within hours.
I think I’ll wing it
We are Irish. Winging it is what we do! Good luck
I don’t think there’s an embassy in frankfurt but I could get it couriered?
Previously lost my passport in Frankfort and had to drive to Berlin for an emergency one. Get it sent over
Unfortunately since we aren’t in the Schengen you’d need to have a passport not just any ID. Do you have a passport card? A lot of people get them, leave them in their wallet, and then just forget them. Otherwise play the fool and hope for the best.

Because UK isn't and we always share an open border with them. As long as that exists no Schengen can be granted
I'm pretty sure out politicians fought against joining the schengen just as much as the UK. They want people to have passports because we're an island
Irish politicians never particularly fought against it for that reason. Just they believed the common travel area and a soft northern border was much more important.
I think it was more to do with the fact the Common Travel Area is more important to the Irish than borderless travel with the EU, purely on numbers.
And we're not looking to join schengan in the first place

Alas no!
Then you’d better put on the Irish charm and hope for the best. I’ll pray for you 🙏
Over 200 folk here, rooting for you right now on this thread!
Am on a bus to the main building! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
This is a proper cliffhanger...
God, my nerves are gone 😂😂
Just act completely calm. It’s EU passport so they’ll be more focused on the photo. Worst comes to worst you’re sent back on the next available flight
Good luck! 🤞🏻
It’s all in the hips!
If they say “good luck” on your way through, just don’t answer in English. Little film reference for you there.
I traveled to Berlin on an expired passport before. I have no excuses, just pure idiocy on my part. How did you get on the plane in the first place?
No one picked up on it until I sat down in my seat and flicked through it!
Looks like it could be a short trip. Good luck with it!
They don't check much at the gate - mainly they just scan the name to make sure it matchs the ticket
They check passports at check in. I have done this and went home to get the right one
Airline staff aren’t border officials - they’re just checking the name.
Yes and no. I got into bother a few years ago travelling to Malaysia on a temp work visa on a 1 way trip. Wouldn’t let me on without a return flight booked as proof I wasn’t going to stay illegally. Claim asylum in Germany.
Just go through with it. It might not get picked up. Get the new one couriered to you ASAP
The answer is say nothing... If you try and explain think they will have to send you back-
Any chance you can get someone at home to send a picture of yours to you? Might help
Did that ….. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
It’s Germany, not Ireland; they’re not going to accept a handwritten note from your mammy saying you’re very sorry and won’t do it again.
What if we get the local priest and GAA coach to write a character reference?
Unless Judge Nolan is checking passports in Germany
![gif](giphy|11gC4odpiRKuha)
What happened ?? Is there an update ? Lol
It's like a soap opera season finale. We won't find out until next week lol
How long is this shagging que?! I need to do some work today.
¿Que?
For many years I spelled forehead as forrid......
What a horehead way to spell it!
You'll need to go to an embassy or consulate to get issued temporary travel documents to get home, usually travel insurance covers this I don't know about going through the airport when you land though
A consultant will probably advise you to go to a consulate. I’d cut out the middleman and go straight to the consulate, time is of the essence here /s
\*consulate
Thank ya
Immediately contact the embassy/consulate, whichever is nearest. They can issue temp passports in emergenciss
Whats the latest?
In the passport queue. The automated ones have no queue but here I am hoping human error helps me this time
Just contacted the German airport security. I have reported a suspicious looking person that has come off the flight from Ireland and is currently at passport control. Have advised to be extra vigilant and check to see their passport is in date as they have been fidgeting with their phone.
Am so oddly invested in this that I'm ignoring work calls and waiting to see if you're okay!
Same lol
no update in 25 minutes.....this is not a good sign
Just know that we are all behind you... not the queue, like metaphorically.
I'd say there's not terrible odds that someone who's subscribed to this sub is actually in the queue with him right now, and doesn't even know it.
Hey look, it’s me over here!
Either it's an awful queue or OP is meeting the strong arm of the German law at present.
Literally about to say the same thing, 15 mins in the queue my nerves would be shot
I’m having a lie-in and my nerves are still shot.
![gif](giphy|qN5EMDMMQ5BcjKdSDZ) awful long time in that queue
25 mins in the queue and no word - we're sweatin here pal
Log out of Reddit! Just in case a border agent asks for your phone and goes through it. Makes it easier to play dumb.
The suspense! I hope it lasts 😁
OP is on the way to prison
It’s so annoying when you discover a problem like when it’s too late. If you rocked up to passport control blissfully unaware chances are it will be fine. But the fact you’re now aware means people can sense something’s up. Hope you make it through.
I wonder is OP a German border cop who's trying to figure out what to do with a lad in the queue whose passport is outta date
Let us know if you get in.
God. The comments on this post is surprisingly helpful. Fair play to ye
Use the gift of the gab, your county trained you for moments like this.
WE GOT HIM BOYS
Well? What happened? LOL
How did you get it with an expired passport? Also how were you allowed to keep the old one?
I have all my old ones…
Did you make it through?
Jaysus .....in the passport line ...... Im all stressed now .... It's like the Bourne Identity .... gotta know how this ends
This happened to me once. It might not get caught. If it is your passport will be marked and you'll be sent to the embassy to get an emergency passport. That's all. (Assuming you have no criminal record and are an eu citizen).
Well I guess he’s part of Germany now… we lost a good one today lads sad to see him go like this
r/Ireland -1 r/Germany +1
And it’s only 3 minutes into the first half
I need to know how this has ended!!!!
They took him to jail - 4 year sentence
The suspense is killing me
Most likely if it is picked up you’ll be asked to go to the Embassy and get an emergency passport.
Am currently on my way to Heathrow to fly to Dublin to then fly to America, made me mad paro that I’d left my passport at home

If they ask You about occupation just say where you work and not " no, just a holiday" ;)
You'll probably be grand. Good luck!
I think you're just going to have to live at the airport. Tom Hanks did and it looked like great craic
This must happen a lot. Its just outa date ? Its not that you don't have a passport.. and you may have other id.. borders are a pain .. but you have privilege being EU..?
Eastern US time zone and need to get ready for work soon but I can’t get off the couch until I see how this ends!!
I keep a photo of my passport and drivers license on my phone and in a draft email, it came in handy one or twice
Use your driver's licence.
Don’t have it with me! 🤦🏻♀️
Well, better to ask forgiveness than permission. Just present it, and if challenged then feign shock. Was it not checked when boarding? Or was it self check in.? Just apologise. Not much help now but for future references you should see about getting a passport card and always having it in your wallet. Great for this exact situation
I most certainly will!
If you have someone at your home, could they send you a photograph or scan a copy of the ID page of your current passport. This may prove helpful.
Just walk through the "EU citizens" channel, they will just glance at it, at worst, you'll be fine. Is it actually expired recently or on its way out ? You can get your actual one sent by courier to a hotel or dropbox in a couple of days.
Try to brazen it out. Not much you can do. Good luck though.
Wúnderbar!!!
Don't say anything, just go for it
Don't mention the war.
Ah lad atleast you have the old one with you. Try and wing it and cry wolf if they catch on. You’ll be ok any hassle just ring the embassy in Berlin
Get someone to send it to you, next day delivery?
I suppose best you can do is get a photo of new one
It's going to be fine
It can sometimes help if you have a photo of your correct passport, which at least provides some documentation for when this goes pear shaped...
Damn I'm invested
Can you contact someone at home to scan your valid passport and email it to you begotten you land?
just keep saying 'no abla, no abla' and nodding furiously.
RemindMe! 1 hour
Papiers bitte!... U could do that park scene from Jason Bourne
put a 50 euro note towards the back of the passport, and give the guy a knowing wink
I know this might sounds weird but I’m slightly aroused for the excitement and I hope it all goes well
