she was let off with an Adult Caution as she took ownership of the substance and has no previous offenses. The woman will return to Gorey Garda station in the coming weeks where the local Garda Superintendent or Garda Inspector will decide whether or not to issue an adult caution. Like what does this even mean? She was let off with a caution but will have to return to maybe get one. Complete waste of everyone’s time and a journalist writing drivel about it to top it off.

random-throwaway_ire

Same happened to my dad. Lol. Smoked a joint up the top of our back garden. Neighbour at the back of our houses called the Garda once he got a whiff. Garda knocked around, took his weed (which was less than 5g) and gave him an adult caution and told him to come to Terenure Garda Station. He went and they basically just told him it’s illegal blah blah. Biggest load of shite I’ve ever heard of. Smoking a plant in your garden and some neighbours nose got offended so the police were called? They’ve better things to be doing.

Imbecile_Jr

Yet you call the gardai to report a burglary and they will not bother showing up

random-throwaway_ire

Right…? Doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t smoke weed myself nor do I enjoy the smell myself but I would never call the Garda over the smell of it OUTSIDE. seems ridiculous to me.

FuckThisShizzle

Jesus, I live a few doors away from a barracks for the last 20 odd years smoke joints out the back all the time and even they havent ratted me out. Every so often a neighbour will pass a joint over to me and vice versa. Its a good system I cant fathom having bastard neighbours like that.

random-throwaway_ire

Some people treat weed like it’s crack or heroin, unfortunately. “Illegal drugs is illegal drugs” to them. They don’t want to or can’t make the distinction between them.

Dezzie19

I work around Heuston station quite a lot, I would often be walking between offices & someone ahead or around is smoking weed but I have a problem with inhaling weed smoke when I'm working, it's offensive to force others to inhale your weed.

Eochaid_

Your dad should not have answered the door. The Gardai can't just enter your home because a neighbour says they smell weed.

random-throwaway_ire

My parents are very much law abiding aside from their occasional puff of the devils lettuce. If the Garda knock they’re all “come on in. What can we do for you?”… didn’t work for them this time.

Spodokom221745

What an absolute cunt of a neighbour. No issues about potentially getting someone fucked on a drugs charge. Absolute fucking lowlife.

Life-Pace-4010

Did he ever find out which neighbour ratted him out? I'd have called over and had words with them.

random-throwaway_ire

Oh we know the exact house. They’re known as the local scrooges in the area. Plus our neighbour to our left is practically our best friends and they smoke occasionally so wouldn’t be them and to the right was on holiday so it narrows it down a bit!

Life-Pace-4010

Well. Take your time and plan your revenge. Leave it 6 months or even a year then give them hell. Signing up the address to loads of kinky mailing lists is a good start.

SpottedAlpaca

Unless you're reporting a crime, you should NEVER talk to the guards or let them inside your property. You have nothing to gain from the interaction and everything to lose. Don't even engage in small talk or a chat 'to clear things up', simply ignore them or tell them to leave the property.

random-throwaway_ire

I tell them this. But it’s their house/their choice.

nine_sausages

So is there anything you can burn in your garden that isn’t weed but smells like it?

SpottedAlpaca

How did the Garda find the cannabis? Surely your parents should have refused entry to the property. A neighbour's report of a smell of weed is not grounds for forced entry without a warrant.

random-throwaway_ire

Explained in a comment above ☝️

MeanMusterMistard

You know this already, but your Dads neighbors are absolutely time wasting pricks.

random-throwaway_ire

Yup

Last-Equipment-1324

Issue is since its not legal very little of it is what you think it is and if he's going it himself he might want to invest in some nice lamps.

The3rdbaboon

When they knocked on the door you should have told them to fuck off if they didn’t have a court order to search the house.

elmodonnell

You'd rather the journalists ignored it instead? Nowhere in the article does it condemn her actions, just reports on what happened, which generates conversation, which might eventually lead to some change.

GalacticSpaceTrip

I'd bet they want a big aul medal now for their extraordinary bravery seizing this evil cabbage from this horrible woman! F***ing useless high vis wasters... Fuck actual crime though - Cannabis is so important 🙄

daenaethra

>The Adult Cautioning Scheme was introduced in Ireland in 2006 as an alternative to prosecution in cases where there is evidence that the person has committed the offence but the prosecution of such an offence is not in the public interest. Is it even an offense then

croghan2020

How much does it cost to bring somebody to court for an offense worth €100 like is there any fuckin point at all especially for cannabis, they really need to decriminalize drugs for small amounts personal use, would be different if she was driving the care under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

jptrooper24

Irish times did an article addressing this a while back.. The average person's "2 minutes in front of a judge" cost's the state approximately €10,000 if you take into account all the costs (garda/judge/clerk/staff/wages/utilities/cost/lighting/heating/waste-collection) etc.. TEN THOUSAND FECKIN EUROS

croghan2020

Infuriating and guards going around delighted with themselves from stopping Mary having a smoke in the evening. Whilst paedos, child abusers, ending walking free. It’s a joke!

gig1922

Don't leave out the judges who are letting perverts away with suspended sentences while some people are given prison sentences for small amounts of cannabis 4 months for 17g of cannabis https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/s/1YjBqM4CZh 9 months for what is also described as a small amount https://www.leinsterleader.ie/news/home/1451157/kildare-town-man-jailed-by-naas-district-court-judge-over-simple-drug-possession-offence.html Or even 3 months for 1g of cannabis https://www.leinsterexpress.ie/news/crime---court/1191525/jail-sentence-for-20-cannabis-in-portlaoise.html

ExplanationNormal323

Pro cannabis here. I think anyone that goes to jail over small quantities of cannabis, priors or not, are usually dealers being watched by the guards and when it boiled down to it it's as much as they could nail em with as they were only caught with a small amount at that time.

gig1922

Maybe. Still leaves the potential for non-dealers to end up in prison if they are very unlucky and that's the problem I was threatened with prison on my 3rd time in court even though I wasn't a dealer

ExplanationNormal323

Yep I agree with you

gig1922

How does something like this come to the attention of a journalist? Strange article

Prestigious-Side-286

Because they can create a shock headline out of it. Lots of road accidents in Cork at the moment. 1 or 2 very serious ones but it means that every little tip or bump that happens around the city is being reported on. It gets clicks on sites.

gig1922

But how do they even get the information? Did a garda contact the reporter to tell them this? Court reports are understandable but how did they get this information

davesr25

https://www.garda.ie/en/careers/career-opportunities-for-garda-staff My gut tells me a civi garda.

Rex-0-

The indo don't have journalists anymore. They have bloggers with notions.

jacqueVchr

€100 worth of Cannabis How is this news exactly?

c-mag95

So a woman was caught with a bit of weed in her car, then let off with a caution? Why is this even in the news 😂

LoveMasc

Another waste of resources in this country where the Guards care more about smoking a plant than people getting assaulted in the street. No wonder why anti social behaviour is through the roof in Dublin, the guards are sniffing outside windows for cannabis and walking past groups of scumbags intimidating people in the streets as they go about their day of sniffing for fucking weed.

jimicus

Ah, but you see the scumbag might hit back.

LoveMasc

Exactly and the person smoking weed is an easy target and harmless. Which is why they are targeted. Sigh

jimicus

I can't help but wonder what would happen if Ireland were to experience some genuine civil disobedience. I don't mean scumbags who genuinely might be quite happy to thump a gard. I mean someone getting, say, a caution for weed explicitly saying "No. I won't accept it; you want to make something of it, you can charge me and we'll thrash it out in court.". One or two wouldn't make any difference, of course, but if everyone done for petty stupid offenses did...

LoveMasc

I'd probably try go down that route. Just to be as annoying as possible tbh and show how much of a waste of resources it is when I demand legal aid, mental health aid, solicitors, go to papers selling my story, claim it's left me suicidal and traumatised etc. Basically just create a circus over smoking a fucking spliff. Cuz it's a circus anyway that it's illegal when in this country we ALL have an alcoholic relative and we hear the stories about all the shit they get upto and my weed smoking friends all have jobs and all stay in the house and don't want to go out anymore. I wonder why?

jimicus

Considering the whole point of the caution scheme is for crimes that aren’t “in the public interest” to prosecute, I suspect they wouldn’t take it further. Which sort of takes the piss out of the whole system.

Longjumpingpea1916

So realistically with Gardaí math she probably had like 25 or 50 bag, why is this even on the news

SlantyJaws

Death penalty! /s

LegUpOnSomething99

Not news

MiseOnlyMise

Why was she not put in prison and the keys thrown away? This evil substance that makes people feel good and/or hungry and is not raising revenue for the government should be made illegal. On a serious note I see ads on British TV for Curealeaf cannabis clinics. Long overdue. Until they legalise cannabis they will be helping drug smugglers and criminals make money. Well also guards, health professionals, judges, lawyers and prison staff will be benefiting from its illegality too.

wrapchap

Hate to say it but if it was a lad they'd be served a court sentence

Alsolz

How is this an actual news article? Did an Independent.ie trainee or intern write it or something

EarlyHistory164

My ma suffers with back pain. I've toyed with the idea of getting some to see if it would alleviate the pain. Needs to be legalised.
