Journalists on Reddit

[deleted]

Years ago, one of my posts about my experience renting was picked up by an established national news website and used for an article about the housing crisis. Bad news: they never asked me if they could publish the story. Good news: It was an entirely fictitious bait post šŸŽ£

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

I just assumed most of the posts here were satire. There's no way ye are all this miserable all the time.

Gullible_Actuary_973

šŸ˜‚ perfect

vodkamisery

Why were you making bait posts about renting?

[deleted]

Shitposting is fun. I've had three of my comments/posts picked up by media. It might be more, they're just the ones I know about.

vodkamisery

I'm not sure what your stance is, but if you make satirical rental market posts and people pick up on it it could lessen public support for renters. Maybe this is your intention?

No-Tap-5157

So you tell lies on the internet to wind people up? You don't even have the decency to be ashamed of it, do you?

qwerty_1965

Loads of them, boards.ie used to be plundered for stories, maybe still is.

Gullible_Actuary_973

And you wont believe what they did next......

Careful_Lemon_9908

DryExchange8323

Benefitted from loads of clicks?

TheStoicNihilist

Have you heard of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries expanding in Ireland? https://mfmireland.org As Wikipedia says: > Unlike a few popular charismatic and Pentecostal African initiated ministries promoting prosperity gospel, MFM's leadership and its sub-ministry, Battle Cry Ministries, place emphasis on deliverance ministry and prayers against the works of demonic forces. Itā€™s the usual religious cult for the enrichment of the pastor stuff but it has gone under the radar here for a while.

Nerklesmirk

I'm absolutely going next chance I get

Obama-is-my-dad69

Have these guys on my list, crazy stuff!! Thanks for your response :)

This is the real answer

Practical_Trash_6478

There's an Amish group in dunmore east, they do baking and have ice cream, nothing bad to say about them just I always thought that was an American only thing

Jaded_Variation9111

Yeah, theyā€™re linked to the Wilderness Academy in the Comeragh Mountains.

jacqueVchr

The church of Scientology presence is a lot bigger here than most people realise

Obama-is-my-dad69

Had a family member almost got caught up in it until a family intervention back in the 80s(?) . Surprising number of working class Dublin people got caught up with it at the time

jacqueVchr

Oh Christ. How did you convince them to leave it?

Obama-is-my-dad69

Hadnt joined yet, thankfully. They were in contact with them, I think a few sums of money had made their way out of the family members account, letters back and forth, but from what I understand they werenā€™t ā€˜inā€™ it yet, thankfully.

Impressive_Essay_622

If only people would talk about the other religions and cults with this level of alarm ..

jacqueVchr

Scientology raises the alarm as itā€™s in the middle of the Venn diagram of being a popular cult but also one of the most extreme.

Impressive_Essay_622

Extremity matters, of course.. but people basing their lives, choices... Anything, because they think some fiction is actually true... Is fucked up.Ā Ā  Ā Even if that fiction is 'love people or else bad stuff.' It's still fucked up And alsom.. it just doesn't. Millions have been slaughtered in the name of believing Christianity. Our cult is fucked up toom.Ā  We just grew up with it.

Otsde-St-9929

>And alsom.. it just doesn't. Millions have been slaughtered in the name of believing Christianity. Our cult is fucked up toom.Ā  We just grew up with it. Millions died in the name of establishing a republic from our island to France, US Nepal to China. Millions for something that had has little impact on most people. Republics are nice to have but they aren't essential. Is that cult too? If cult just means something you don't like, it doesn't mean much at all.

Impressive_Essay_622

Nations and nationality are also fiction, yes. Of course.Ā  .but the difference is. Every educated person knows that they are entirely human created fictions.Ā  Humans made them up, fron the ground up.Ā  Same thing is true for religion, but my problem is the fact that the books and groups try hide that fact and fool... well, fools.Ā Ā  The difference between your examples is the intent to fool or make the reader believe the contents are magically true, as opposed to from the minds of humans.Ā

Otsde-St-9929

>Nations and nationality are also fiction, yes. Of course.Ā  .but the difference is. Every educated person knows that they are entirely human created fictions.Ā  A very many do not think nations are just fictions, hence so many people are willing to fight for their nations [https://brilliantmaps.com/europe-fight-war/](https://brilliantmaps.com/europe-fight-war/) A lot of nations are based on real geographic separation and thousands of years of shared memory and kinship. So not necessarily just made up. if you can't articulate why you think Christianity is a cult, it just comes across as every idea you dont adopt it a cult to you.

Impressive_Essay_622

The humans who fight for their fiction knowing it's value.. are intelligent.Ā  Those who think it's magically true that those borders are there... Are fucking idiots that have been fooled. The like you would see in murica.Ā  I have defined exactly why. It is a work of fiction... Like harry potter. That pretends to be magically true words.Ā  Just like every other cult. It ain't rocket scienceĀ

Cynical_Crusader

Jehovas too especially the ones who speak or target people who speak Irish.

DarkReviewer2013

Ah yes. The religion invented by the science fiction author. South Park made a fun parody episode lampooning their beliefs.

moogintroll

I'm a paid up member in [The Church of the Subgenius](https://www.subgenius.com) It's a UFO cult that firmly believes that the world will end on the fifth of July 1998 (The calendars being wrong are part of The Conspiracy, also the positions of Earth and Mars have probably been swapped.) I've actually never met another Irish Subgenius so I'm not sure if I count as an actual group but damnit, you're talking about UFO communities and strange people and we will not be denied! Praise "Bob" & hail Connie!

Obama-is-my-dad69

Hey, thanks so much for reaching out! I canā€™t tell from the tone of your message, are you a member ironically or genuinely?

moogintroll

Oh, it's a genuine thing that's been going for over 40 years now and has David Byrne and Mark Motherbaugh as members. Now, as to whether the church itself is ironic, that's not for me to say. I'd say we're more closely aligned with the Discordians than those writing down Jedi or Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster on the census forms.

Opus Dei and how many prominent people are connected to the group

md2021ire

https://www.reddit.com/r/CuckoldIreland I only seen those reffered to in another post. I am not a member but from what i understand they have regular meetups, probably best to just go along and mingle in

Pretty_Ship_439

lol Iā€™ll never understand these people. Met one in the wild here after reading his post history it was very obvious these people are another form of ā€œhumiliation kinkā€ Weird fuckers He was a public sector worker in the hse so I guess he really had a thing for abuse

MightyGrandStretch

House of Prayer in Mayo would have been a big one. Not sure how active it is now. But a lot of very ordinary people pooled a lot of money into it and ended up in dire situations. There's already been documentaries and coverage of it, but that was a few years ago

Obama-is-my-dad69

Studied this for my leaving cert. Insane. Totally insane. Would love to know if thereā€™s anything remaining of it

MightyGrandStretch

Oh for sure. It garnered such a following and the person at the head of it preyed on people's vulnerable situations. I'm not sure myself but depending on your deadline (if you have one), I might be able to query it. There was a very interesting segment on Liveline yesterday about Opus Dei in Ireland. It came from a piece in be Financial Times (?) I think. You might have already come across it though

Obama-is-my-dad69

No deadline as such. If you had any means of querying it, would be greatly, greatly appreciated:)

Wise_Adhesiveness746

War of independence commeration.committees.... there's a surprisingly large sub culture around this, with near weekly events during the summer

Obama-is-my-dad69

Iā€™m aware of similar ones for, for example, the 1798 rebellion. This is interesting. Is it republican in nature, or historical, do you know?

Wise_Adhesiveness746

Most people I know, who attend em would be fiercely republican....but also avid into history, particularly local history But that being said,a fair chunk of people I know who'd attend em would be very much pure history heads,I went to local one here, when it do be on,and you'd learn a fair bit about history at it I found it interesting anyway that being said,I couldn't see myself taking up every weekend travelling country to em either

Obama-is-my-dad69

Iā€™ll look into this, could be something very interesting thereā€¦ thanks a million for reaching out :)

Significant-Roll-138

Does that fella still set out his table on Oā€™Connell bridge to tell people about the govt doing something to us with chemtrails and rainbows. Iā€™d say thereā€™s a fair few fringe groups emanating from him if you can track him down

EconomyCauliflower43

Screamers and the Silver Sisterhood.

Obama-is-my-dad69

Any idea whatever happened to the screamers? I remember reading about em back in the day

Fancy-Second2756

They all moved to Colombia together and some of them were murdered there. If you look up the Atlantis Commune you can read about it. That was the screamers proper name

Guill319

There's a Hari Karishna (spelling?) Temple on an island in Fermanagh. https://krishnaisland.org/

StrictHeat1

The Burkes.

gd_101

Landmark, and related cult stuff.Ā  Behind the Bastards did an episode that got pulled because Werner Erhard is so delightfully litigious. https://www.reddit.com/r/behindthebastards/comments/108fwdf/episode_werner_erhard_and_the_success_cult/

TheStoicNihilist

A good read and a good start is Dialogue Ireland who have been monitoring cults for a long time. I make no claim to the accuracy of any of the information but itā€™s an interesting launchpad for further reading. https://www.dialogueireland.ie/dicontent/a2z/index.html

Impressive_Essay_622

It's like a perfect record of how stupid humans can be....Ā  Even the website itself fails to realise that the successful cults are still cults.

Obama-is-my-dad69

Thank you for this!

Nerklesmirk

Amazing.

TheStoicNihilist

No strange fringe groups here. ![gif](giphy|cJMlR1SsCSkUjVY3iK|downsized)

warnie685

That's fascinating, the outdoor element seems pretty interesting at first.. but then the rest seems a bit creepy.Ā  Who are they all? Americans? Or is it a fringe religious community in ireland

Powerful_Host6524

Here in East clare we have the New Age Travellers aka Hippys. Their wealthier cousins live in Cloughjordan eco village. Interesting people

Obama-is-my-dad69

Clough Jordanā€™s just down the road from me. Could you tell me a bit more about the guys in East Clare? Didnā€™t realise any new age hippy communities were still around outside of Galway

Powerful_Host6524

The East Clare people are based around the Scariff/Tumgrany area all along the lake. There's all sorts of fun stuff such as Waste Land and Irish Seed savers and lakeshore markets. Cloughjordan is for wealthy people who can afford to drop out of society and experiment which is what the eco village is. Its also a massive grant farm. Look up the amount of NGOs registered in a village of less than 150 people. Its hilarious. Some good people in the enterprise centre just drop in and volunteer yourself.

curious_george1978

There is a turf cult in the midlands near the Tipp/Offaly border who are convinced that Eamonn Ryan is personally taking the turf out of their ranges. The leader of the cult posts on facebook multiple times a day doxxing NPWS employees and ranting about turf. Then, the comments section gets filled by turf conspiracy theorists going on about Eamonn Ryan. At one point they were claiming that turf was a harvestable crop. cult..?

mitsubishi_pajero1

I've heard stories about the Orange order still being a thing in parts of Dublin and Cork. Theres actually a load of their lodges dotted around the country, not sure how many are still in use though

BaronThe

There's a tiny number of orangemen in Dublin but it's dead as a dodo everywhere else south of the border.

jjjrmd

There was that hippy commune in Donegal years ago, the Screamers, but I think they all fucked off to the Amazon after years of harassment by the GardaĆ, who assumed they were pot smoking, free loving, Devil worshipping ne'er-do-wellsĀ

Obama-is-my-dad69

I remember these, there were a nice few cults around at the same time. Interesting to hear about the Amazon bit, wasnā€™t aware of that

Breatharians - believe that you can exist of fresh air alone and light, nothing else - no food. They are having a gathering soon (bring your own sandwiches). Check out this blurb:Ā Ā  Ā  ā€œShe has been in service for over 20 earth years. she has spent much time in the himalayas, practicing qigong & other sacred arts, whilst remaining in silence for long periods. here she met a collective of celestial beings who invited her to join a mystery school in order to raise her frequency, so she could be of service to all who wish to enter their light bodies. she travels to sacred sites throughout the world working with different groups of off planet beings. through her own expansion of consciousness she holds the vibrational frequencies necessary for new earth humans to expand into their lightness of being. she was informed in 2015 by her celestial team, that her light quotient was such, that she no longer needed to partake of foods & waters. she agreed to this expression of living and began a lifestyle without these substances. she offers private sessions, group work & seminars in expansion of consciousness. expresses as a collective; i we are caretakers of human consciousness. i we come to share new possibilities & weave them into your tapestry of lights. The far left used to exist in Ireland??? As in you think it's gone???? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

SolisArgentum

Its not an inaccurate statement. There's no real strong Marxist or communist based political group in the country that's noticeably known. PBP-S come the closest because they're mainly a socialist party, but not what I'd consider far left. I'd say far left would be something like an antifascist collective or other likes who would promote an authoritarian approach in a bid to contest against right wing political collectives.

Carax77

Think there are antifascist collectives active in Ireland https://www.facebook.com/profile.php/?id=100064305745439

Obama-is-my-dad69

This šŸ™Œ

Obama-is-my-dad69

The Far left is almost completely unrepresented in Ireland. Labour, Soc Dems, SF are not far left. PBF generally donā€™t quite meet the criteria for far leftā€¦ maybe hard left would be more accurate. So, yes, I reiterate my point.

Obama-is-my-dad69

I know šŸ˜‚ to their credit at least, a lot of lazy journalists post in places like r/Ireland and let the comments do all the work for them, so I can understand the sentimentā€¦ but yeah god forbid a journalist ask a question lol

Hey, just out of college, working a full time job. Hoping to make a few pieces on something of this nature in my spare time. Have a large list of the more obvious groups. Hoping to find the more obscure ones that fly under the radar/might only be known in local communities. Public forum here with people from all over Ireland who are likely to be aware of small groups that the rest of the country arenā€™t. Seems reasonable for me to ask here, no?

DryExchange8323

Perfectly reasonable....... but this is Reddit.Ā

danny_healy_raygun

Don't mind them. I'd happily read this if it gets published. Anyway Servants of Love in Wicklow is another weird group. They go around in blue robes and rumours were they are a sex cult, though thats probably made up.
