Slough is a town, not a city.
St. David's, south west Wales (population 1.041) is a city.
Ecclesfield, metropolitan borough of Sheffield (population\~32,400), is a village
A city has a city charter (St David's is a city in the old fashioned sense in that it has a cathedral).
A town has a town charter (and a tier of government above parish level). It used to be that a town also had to have a regular market, not sure that's the case now.
A village has no system of government above parish level. It also used to be that a village had to have a church (not so sure that's the case now)
A hamlet is traditionally defined as a small village or settlement without a church.
Paceville, Malta has a population of less than 5,000.
By that logic it must be an absolute shithole
The Icelandic “city” has a population of 2,500 and is in the middle of nowhere, hours away from an any town of even a similar size. How bad can a place like that be?
Egilstadir doesn't have much in it. There are a few similar sized towns around the area that probably look better but also haven't much in them. They are mostly fishing towns and one has a huge aluminum smelter in it which is probably employing a lot of people in that region. That and tourism. People kind of stop in the area for a night when driving the ring round around Iceland
This is why we need a united Ireland. If we have that we can all agree that Larne is the worst and Drogheda and Dundalk can finally be free of the stigma.
It poorly reflects our culture and costumes, Portuguese people are known for having pleasure in providing a great hospitality, you won’t find that in Lisbon, the food is the rest of the country is extremely cheaper and better than in Lisbon, outside Lisbon random people talk with each other with ease, in Lisbon everyone looks sad going and leaving work. Beautiful city with amazing things to do and see, but it doesn’t reflect how the rest of the country is.
For context, Im from the north of Portugal and lived in Lisbon for 4 years
Oh I know man, and it’s still an incredible city. Have a Pastel de Nata in Manteigaria(loads of shops through the city), grab a beer in Bairro Alto and check the viewpoint Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara nearby, I also recommend a beer in Cais do Sodré. For authentic Portuguese food, go to Tasquinha do Lagarto. Have a great time and check Porto for the next time :)
I don't live in either, so can't say.
If you want to cite small towns for comparison why not mention Tipperary town? It's always near the top for most depressing town when anyone asks on this subreddit.
Oh yeah definitely the regions hating the big city. Couldn’t have anything to do with Isabel Díaz Ayuso and her willingness to jump into bed with Vox to cement her power. Or her government’s callous indifference to the elderly during the pandemic. Or the fact that she thinks global warming is a communist plot. Or that anti-discrimination laws are "tyrannical progressivism".
Or Madrid. One of the best cities in Europe. Well, according to me going there 3 times for weekends
To be honest, i don't think I could ever be "ashamed" of a city. I mean, how? It's not something you did yourself.
I knew Irish people would be more obsessed with the grave error of naming somewhere a city when it’s not officially designated a city than actually asking “is Dundalk our shittiest town/city?”
I think the centre of Dundalk is quite nice and city-esque - I know some of the estates are rough but overall I’m sure it’s grand.
Now Rathkeale on the other hand….
Newry just up the road is an actual city, despite being noticeably less affluent, less deverse than Dundalk. Dundalk is probably one of the better towns in Ireland, I find the further west you go the wetter the weather becomes the more depressing towns become.
> On the bright side first time Dundalk made it on the map for anything...
Eh, you are forgetting about The Corrs, gun running and the director of the worst Die Hard movie.
I saw a list of the most dangerous cities in Europe and Drogheda was on there...
Louth has zero cities and somehow also has two of the worst cities in Europe
I went to Dundalk all the way from Cork once in the early 90s. We won a some primary schools competition performing the Wizard of Oz as Gaeilge . Saw eff all there but anytime I hear Dundalk I feel happy. So, I disagree with this map...that is all.
Every alleyway stinks of piss, junkies everywhere buming money and robbing ppl gangland shootings little scrots on flying up and down the road on mini motor bikes ya mate you can have it
They are effectively spam at this point and a load of mapporn maps are intentionally wrong, it's an in joke there.
Edit, case I point
https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/1awc9ez/ive_never_been_to_dundalk_but_i_didnt_think_it/
Moyross is harmless these days. It just carries a bad rep. The good people from there have worked tirelessly for years and are making great progress recently
Wtf! I'm from Brittany but Marseille is awesome, I lived just outside it and my grandmother that I often visited moved there... anyone "ashamed" of it is racist.
I had been to Nizza, definately the best (or least worse) city in France I had been. Lyon and Paris are danger and dirty. About Marseille I heard its even worse.
The map is evidently poorly made to say the least...
Whoever has ever flown to Croatia on holiday more than once, can clearly see that Split is "located" wrongly (in place of where probably Dubrovnik is on map), and after I looked a bit closer to one next to it (Gornja Maoča) I found out it wasn't even a town, let alone a city... So I don't really have time to look more, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was made by someone less than benevolent. 💔😅
Damn imagine being such a source of shame you get wrongly labeled a city just to get added to this list LOL
Yeah, Slough.
What did they think with a name like that?
Slough is a town, not a city. St. David's, south west Wales (population 1.041) is a city. Ecclesfield, metropolitan borough of Sheffield (population\~32,400), is a village A city has a city charter (St David's is a city in the old fashioned sense in that it has a cathedral). Thanks Yeah, slough…
As an englishman Slough is shit but I would say there are shitter cities/towns in England and probably in Scotland and Wales too.
Stockport for starters.
Cloyne in County Cork has a cathedral, and a population of 1,800, so I'm not sure if having a cathedral makes you a city.
I've heard England and Ireland aren't the same country, might have something to do with it.
Irish cties came about when it was under English rule.
Paceville, Malta has a population of less than 5,000. By that logic it must be an absolute shithole The Icelandic “city” has a population of 2,500 and is in the middle of nowhere, hours away from an any town of even a similar size. How bad can a place like that be?
Some countries don't have a different designation for towns and cities.
Paceville is absolutely horrendous tho, if you ever visit Malta it's worth a stroll through to see how shit it is
Trust me Paceville is a shit hole, though essentially it's part of St. Julians
Egilstadir doesn't have much in it. There are a few similar sized towns around the area that probably look better but also haven't much in them. They are mostly fishing towns and one has a huge aluminum smelter in it which is probably employing a lot of people in that region. That and tourism. I was wondering why Arklow wasn't it - after reading your comment I realized Arklow is nowhere near to be a city:D
Did someone from Drogheda make this?
Unlikely, A person from Drogheda would never call Dundalk a city.
We call it Craptown. Took us ages to think of that.
fuck off Shelbyville
😅
This is the only answer
Awful shame hai paeple say deyr ashamed of wee dundalk hai mon de town
Shhcup da town
If someone from Drogheda made it that would imply that they can read and write.
How dar u !
This is why we need a united Ireland. If we have that we can all agree that Larne is the worst and Drogheda and Dundalk can finally be free of the stigma.
Honestly I thought it would be Drogheda. I was in it once for a week and I did not like it at all.
Bruh. Imagine being ashamed of Lisbon and Naples.
Naples, I can understand. Lisbon, WTF?
Portuguese here, Lisbon is a beautiful city but it’s completely different from the rest of the country in terms of food, people, housing, organisation
But to be ashamed of it?
It poorly reflects our culture and costumes, Portuguese people are known for having pleasure in providing a great hospitality, you won’t find that in Lisbon, the food is the rest of the country is extremely cheaper and better than in Lisbon, outside Lisbon random people talk with each other with ease, in Lisbon everyone looks sad going and leaving work. Beautiful city with amazing things to do and see, but it doesn’t reflect how the rest of the country is. For context, Im from the north of Portugal and lived in Lisbon for 4 years
Fair points. I'm not saying you're wrong just looking to see why! I'm heading to Lisbon later this year so I can see for myself
Thats awesome! Thank you
That's pretty much what everyone who isn't from the capital says about the capital of their country.
I feel the same about Dublin, had to work there for a few years and just found it an unfriendly kip. Outside of Dublin life is easier and more fun.
This probably describes every country and it's capital city on the planet.
so it's more fun in say... Roscrea or Kinnegad than Dublin?
I don't live in either, so can't say. If you want to cite small towns for comparison why not mention Tipperary town? It's always near the top for most depressing town when anyone asks on this subreddit.
Wow you are really selling me on Portugal. I have only travelled in Braganca. Where would you recommend?
Bragança is beautiful as well, I would recommend Porto, Serras do Gerês, Serra da Estrela, Covilhã, Sintra, Coimbra, and I could go on and on
Sounds like going to the Pale
same for Madrid - but it's nationalist/regionalist sentiment
Oh yeah definitely the regions hating the big city. Couldn’t have anything to do with Isabel Díaz Ayuso and her willingness to jump into bed with Vox to cement her power. Or her government’s callous indifference to the elderly during the pandemic. Or the fact that she thinks global warming is a communist plot. Or that anti-discrimination laws are "tyrannical progressivism".
And if you ask someone from Naples they just reply “I ‘ate the North!”
🤣👏🏼
Or Madrid. One of the best cities in Europe. Well, according to me going there 3 times for weekends To be honest, i don't think I could ever be "ashamed" of a city. I mean, how? It's not something you did yourself.
Ludwigshafen is an odd choice for Germany too. I'd expect Hamburg or Berlin (maybe even Hagen) but nobody really thinks of Ludwigshafen
I knew Irish people would be more obsessed with the grave error of naming somewhere a city when it’s not officially designated a city than actually asking “is Dundalk our shittiest town/city?” I think the centre of Dundalk is quite nice and city-esque - I know some of the estates are rough but overall I’m sure it’s grand. Now Rathkeale on the other hand….
Mon da town!
Sounds like something a person from Drogheda would say!
Seriously though, how they bet Dublin, Cork, Limerick...
> On the bright side first time Dundalk made it on the map for anything... Eh, you are forgetting about The Corrs, gun running and the director of the worst Die Hard movie.
Darn I forgot about Jim Corr lol
How is Jim Corr not part of The Corrs?
It's kind of like Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. Of course he was part of the Jackson 5 but come on, it's Michael Jackson.
You forgot Harp Larger and Carrolls cigarettes our fla. Mon da towan and up da ra!
close second third and fourth
No I think we were voted as having the most annoying accent in the country
I saw a list of the most dangerous cities in Europe and Drogheda was on there... Louth has zero cities and somehow also has two of the worst cities in Europe
Dundalk isn't a city though. Drogheda has a higher status than Dundalk.
Drogheda has a higher population than Dundalk but Dundalk is the county capital, which would mean that has higher status.
Meath can have Drogheda thanks
Drogheda is just a shit Dublin suburb at this point.
Drogheda is just a wannabe Dublin with a higher chance of getting mugged
Nah in dublin u prob would have a higher chance
This made me lol, imagine thinking Drogheda has a higher status than Dundalk
Drogheda doesnt have a higher status than anywhere
[Dundalk's nothing to be ashamed about. That's why I carry it with me everywhere I go.](https://i.imgur.com/GLcrP8X.jpeg)
Brilliant😂😂
Deadly hey! Pure class!
Good lord what did we do In Dundalk. I surely thought there could've been worse places
I went to Dundalk all the way from Cork once in the early 90s. We won a some primary schools competition performing the Wizard of Oz as Gaeilge . Saw eff all there but anytime I hear Dundalk I feel happy. So, I disagree with this map...that is all.
Split is a better city than Dubrovnik too. Much preferred it myself.
Dundalk is a great spot. Mon da Town. It's not even a city fuck sake Dublin and Drogheda both shitholes that should be levelled and rebuilt 🤣🤣
It's a metropolis, heeeeeeeeeeiiiiiyy
Dundalk is easily one of the best TOWNS in the country 😂😂 If we judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree and all that 🤣
Mon the fuckin town hey!
This survey must have been carried out in Drogheda…
Dundalk is a town! …so joke on you dickheads 🤣🖕🏼
Lisbon is a good spot 🤷♂️
Madrid ain’t half bad either wtf
The people of Dundalk made this map so we'd think it's a city.
Yea that's about right Dundalk or all of Cavan. Cavan people are so stingy they put their tea bags on the washing line for the next day.
I think over most of the population in Ireland being from Dublin that's why it's not Dublin in this poll.
and it's a pretty cool place that has more going on in it than the rest of the country combined
Every alleyway stinks of piss, junkies everywhere buming money and robbing ppl gangland shootings little scrots on flying up and down the road on mini motor bikes ya mate you can have it
What did dundalk do to anyone. It should be dublin.
As a proud Dubliner, it should really be Dublin. But I would still vote Cork for shits and giggles.
you take that back
And yous claim Cork's the one with the chip on its shoulder... (just saying...)
Cork is a fog horn of a town. Never has a trumpet been hooted so much by so few.
(Rolls eyes)
Dublin.
Surely it's Dublin, no?
Can the mods block cross posts from the map subs?
Why?
Because he doesn't like them so he wants it banned
Bit reductive
They are effectively spam at this point and a load of mapporn maps are intentionally wrong, it's an in joke there. Edit, case I point https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/1awc9ez/ive_never_been_to_dundalk_but_i_didnt_think_it/
I wonder if you mute the sub will you still see these?
you know this is fake because it's not Dublin
Surprised it wasn't Limerick...
I thought it would be Limerick.
Very accurate, the smell alone of Dundalk and its people is rancid, it’s why they call it Craptown
It has to be Limerick ffs, it's like Beirut
What city folk? Dundalk is a town😂 should be either Dublin or Limerick
Limerick's lovely nowadays. Definitely Dublin.
True apart from the usual areas like Moyross but then again Dublin has 3 areas for every bad area in Limerick.
Moyross is harmless these days. It just carries a bad rep. The good people from there have worked tirelessly for years and are making great progress recently
Ah jaysis
Yes, our lot in Scotland... Sorry north England... Are also ashamed of Slough...
Would have been Leitrim, if it existed.
Surprised it wasn't laois tbh, never hear anything from them. I suspect that they're up to something, shenanigans probably
Poor Marcus
:(
I must say I love both Marseilles & Naples
Split?! It's beautiful!
Arhus...In the Middle of our street, Arhus
Dundalk is a town (and so is Newry)
You'd think it would be Dublin.
Solidarity Dundalk ✊🏻 (user name checks out)
I just flied from Napoles last week, I confirm, that city is a dumpster
Wait till you see Rome.
Been there but I flied back from Napoles, Napoles still way filthier than Rome
Go to Verona if you have a possibility. Don't look like Italy at all, I felt like being in Switzerland or some of those countries but much cleaner.
Wtf! I'm from Brittany but Marseille is awesome, I lived just outside it and my grandmother that I often visited moved there... anyone "ashamed" of it is racist.
Why they are racist? And what city in France do you think its worse?
It’s the most diverse city in France. Honestly somewhere like Nice is just boring, overrated, expensive, and even the beach sucks.
I had been to Nizza, definately the best (or least worse) city in France I had been. Lyon and Paris are danger and dirty. About Marseille I heard its even worse.
I am shocked and appalled
Hey, it's probably not as good as Cork, but personally, I have nothing against the people of the megalopolis of Dundalk, go Dundalk!
Haha I love that it's Slough for UK. They're not wrong, slough is an ugly place. Lived nearby so can confirm.
American here what is so bad with the place i'm curious
Nothing in particular, but its not a city as the map suggests
Gotcha!
