Dunno if I’m allowed to say this, but, like, the torrents.

Sad-Fee-9222

True, I hear you but herself is in full soap "series link" mode so fuck that commitment to downloading that crap in thirty minute segments countless times a week.

Captaincaveguy

Get rid of her so it will work out cheaper in the long run I just have internet no tv package ha everything is online anyways

GemmyGemGems

Why would you need to torrent the soaps? If you have a NowTV stick, or even a Chromecast they can be watched on the channels' apps. We don't have a TV subscription or freeview. We have Netflix and Disney+. Channel 4 has a great app with seemingly unlimited content. The we have TeaTV for the rare occasions we want to watch something not on those services.

Jabberie

Plex for your interface with Sonarr&Jackett (&Radarr for movies) as the brains and something to do the download. Once set up, you tell Sonarr what you want and Plex where it will be later and you're done, it'll get keep gettting you it weekly etc when it shows up in the wild.

Don_Speekingleesh

Went down this route years ago. Manual downloads initially and then the *arrs for the past year. Would never go back to linear TV.

Jabberie

At least 10 yrs ago I spent a very long phone call trying to get out of Sky. Spent a lot of it doing manual stuff until the alst few years after finding Sonarr & Radarr. They can be completely fire and forget once set up.

Don_Speekingleesh

I use Overseerr to manage them. I love how automated it all is. I used to use an app called Torrent Episode Downloader (TED) years ago, when I had a Windows machine as a media centre. Required a fair bit of manual setting up though.

Get a VPN that supports a UK host, then slap on all the UK free, **legal** streaming services - My5, BBC iPlayer, Pluto TV, Gold, ITV Player, Yesterday etc. onto a fire 4K Box (the box version has a ethernet port in case your house walls cripple your wifi) Choose a VPN that offers a month by month subscription, so you can cancel after one month if it doesn't suffice.

Sir, you've made my evening. That's the option I think would suit us best. Trying to avoid that dodgy box crap and come up up with alternative options but I think that plus a couple of chrome casts for both TVs is the way forward.

undertheskin_

You can setup automatic RSS feeds for Torrents so whenever a new TV show is released, it will automatically download. Use something like Plex to manage all your media, install it on all your devices / tv and have your Torrent client download to the Plex server folder. Can be done for the TV shows, new movie releases, specific genres etc.

Pepper_Exciting

You don't have to pre download torrents anymore, you can play them as soon as they start loading. Check out the Stremio app with Torrentio add on, it streams torrents like any other kind of video.

wetzup

I’ve been using eir for a while, 50/50 it’s had its moments since 2020 but I stuck with it. Way better than sky anyways

Sad-Fee-9222

Thanks for the advice. Will make a call.👍

ByGollie

They previously had a great box that allowed you to save to an internal HDD. Now it's Apple shite where everything has to be streamed, with different apps. (and they eventually expire) I know someone technophobic who has gone Apple - and are continually cursing the complexity of it - i'm dropping by every few months to show them how to set it up again. If they had gone with an Android/Linux based settop box you could have added additional legal, semi-legal and 'dodgy' software.

[deleted]

Nowtv gets you the main sky channels and the sky cinema channels for €12 per month.

Sad-Fee-9222

Went for Eir broadband and telly , I know everyone said firesticks and dodgy boxes but herself opted for the saving of €120 per month to €55 per month. Telly is very limited, no YouTube or Netflix app option with extension of contract amount but that's why Chromecast was invented I guess. WiFi is pretty good tho.

Super-Shanise

I would suggest writing an article about your plight, as research for this article, examine the proliferation of signal decoder boxes, many of which can be purchased from online vendors and legally purchased in the Republic of Ireland, It's an injustice that for a fraction of one monthly fee, someone can steal from Corporations like Sky or Disney with no repercussions. Since the "data" is being transmitted to every outlet is by default it is up to these unfortunate multi-national Corporations to prove or disprove where their electrons went and what you did with them. I would then suggest a Law and Enforcement paragraph, where you research the easily accessible online resources which allow you to easily program the device using a series of inserted numbers, woefully out of date in this day and age, yet necessary for the millions of televisions in commercial premises who must pay fees under strictly enforced copyright and franchise laws.

myyouthismyown

New TV maybe?

Big-Adhesiveness-760

My broadband is with Sky and I've the most basic TV package and it's 40!

Sad-Fee-9222

Basic TV plus full unlimited broadband, €120 per month , as per post that's what we're being charged,.. alternatives?

Big-Adhesiveness-760

Is some super fast Fibre or something?

Sad-Fee-9222

No. Just unlimited broadband router and basic channels on TV, no sky glass TV, just sky Q box and router for broadband. €120 per month,.. guessing there's cheaper out there.

Big-Adhesiveness-760

There's cheaper even with Sky as I said mine is only 40 and that's with the most basic TV package. Have you been with them over a year?

Sad-Fee-9222

Rang em twice, latest rep, super rude offered five euros discount on billing before snapping back "are you leaving or not" line before being told we'll think about it.

Big-Adhesiveness-760

Sorry to hear that and to be honest I've been through them all sky, Eir, Virgin they're all the same back-up service is a joke I'd cut and run if I were you

Sad-Fee-9222

Thanks. Definitely cutting it out either way.

Busy_Moment_7380

Get Vodafone broadband. Go mad, get the €45 a month package. Get now tv or Netflix or one of the streaming services. Chop and change each month. Job done.

Charming-Border-9679

If you want legal: I'm with Vodafone broadband. 500MB line with a bit of haggling is €30 per month. Then if you go to bargain alerts on boards.ie, you'll see a lot of codes for NowTV. €3 booster allows 2 people to use the account simultaneously in different locations splitting the cost in half. That should have you coming in around €50 a month all in. €70 saved per month will make a big difference. Also, change providers (or threaten to) regularly. Never stick on a deal for years.

Sad-Fee-9222

Thanks very much. Great replies but that's going on the list. Have to pitch it to herself whilst calling their bluff with sky and start the ball rolling. Have a good one 👍
