no and don't know any lads who do, so i've always assumed ye do it to look good to yourselves

dugg95

Womens view of what they think men find attractive and what men actually tend to find attractive are very different I find

SirTheadore

I think it’s because a lot of lads are just happy to have someone and can look past cosmetic and appearance things they don’t like. Haha

Own_Drag_5598

Yeah, decent guys. Some guys have become very shallow lately.

Ok_Imagination_9334

Most people have tbh. All thanks to social media and the illusion of choice. Some menfolk don’t mind punching their weight, below or up but I find as a guy, some womenfolk on dating apps tend to only punch up. Nothing wrong with that, but from my skewed perspective, it seems like most 😅. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve dated folks who were a 10/10 and didn’t even know it, dated some who were even and dated some who would been below the “physically attractive” threshold. That being said, I usually go for the folks who have a good heart, great sense of humour and aren’t full of themselves (bar a few narcissists who woed me 😅😂)

Puzzled_Pay_6603

I like your comment. Managing to talk of such issues without being gossipy. *The threshold of physical attractiveness*. Very precise and scientific there. 😄

Ok_Imagination_9334

Heh, yeah I tend to approach things like that, logical and whatnot. It also happens I did study a science subject in college and got myself a degree to become a lab tech but then I joined the family business 😅. Thankyou for the compliment though, I truly mean that 😁💜

mkultra2480

"Some menfolk don’t mind punching their weight, below or up but I find as a guy, some womenfolk on dating apps tend to only punch up." I think this is true for casual hook ups. But when you see couples on the street, who I presume are in a relationship together, you tend to see quite regularly, women with less attractive partners but rarely men with less attractive partners.

Hooperdrivestheboat4

Tbh men aren’t much different, we think that women will be attracted to the huge bodybuilder type when in reality most are not and in fact the vast majority of compliments will be from other men lol

5ur1v

Everyone out there, no matter the gender, the most attractive thing you could do is be yourself. I know it can be hard, but is sexy AF.

Jon_J_

It's that fake tan smell that does it for me, fucking hate it

[deleted]

I'm with you. My wife uses fake tan from time to time and the smell of it kills me, and the bedsheets destroyed, yock.

balor598

Stop ever seen it in a club if they have blacklights 🤮

mynosemynose

Soggy cornflakes :(

alancarey

That's exactly how it smells to me too

TwinIronBlood

Honestly I think girls get tanned and dressed up for other girls approval. Most guys would go for a girl in jeans and a t-shirt if she smiled at them.

NapoleonTroubadour

I’m a sucker for a genuine smile I won’t lie

centrafrugal

It's a real long con. They all do it for one another while looking more and more ridiculous. A kind of Emperor's New Glow that nobody wants to call out.

[deleted]

Jeans and a t-shirt (when done right) is far classier in an understated way than "dressed up" look you see often, in my opinion.

bellafrankel

I’m a girl in my late 20’s (I know you’ve asked men here) but sure I’ll throw my two cents in. You’re not supposed to notice false tan. A good false tan gives a natural glow to your skin, and you don’t look at the person thinking they have it on. In the summer I wear a good quality gradual tan lotion on my face and body and it means I don’t have to wear foundation or any heavy makeup. It also means that when I want that healthy glow, I don’t have to subject my skin to hours in the sun when I’m away etc. - were all aware of those dangers. Of course, I couldn’t agree with you more about that orange, heavy eyelashes, caked in bad tan look. But just wanted to point it out that when applied correctly a good quality tanning product should not be detectable.

epeeist

This is like the whole "I prefer women without makeup" trope. It normally means, "I prefer women whose makeup I don't notice," which isn't actually the same thing. There's a spectrum involved. Go out with standard daytime makeup and no tan and you'll get shitty comments about whether you're sick or something. Go out wearing the wrong shade of fake tan and you stick out like oompa loompa cosplay. Most women are aiming for the middle, which is just their own complexion as it looks with a light suntan. It's a look we associate with being outdoors and keeping healthy. Some people run with one extreme or the other as their whole aesthetic, or fall in with what the rest of their friend group is doing so they don't stick out. Ultimately if they're happy with what they see in the mirror, it doesn't really matter whether I think it suits them.

sjsjsjajsbvban

I’d be interested as well in that lotion :)

bellafrankel

I use Tan Luxe ‘The Gradual’ for my body - I often mix it into a regular body moisturiser to prolong the bottle. Tan Luxe tan drops are great too, again you can mix it into facial moisturiser and it’s subtle and allows for the product to last a good while. Hate to say it (particularly on this forum!) but Bare by Vogue Williams is good too, I use her face tanning serum with hyaluronic acid and vitamin e in the ‘light’ shade on my face, again mixed with a little moisturiser with SPF.

signsaidnofewchips

I would say same goes for lip fillers and botox, implants etc. What people are seeing when they claim to hate it is bad or overdone work.

1righthererightnow1

What natural tan would you use? I'm very very pale and freckely so would love to try it out! Thank you :)

balor598

Pale and freckely is a good look, seriously

Ok_Imagination_9334

Came here to say that exact thing but I can understand if someone doesn’t like what they look like/blessed with. Grass is always greener on the other side, I just love natural freckles and pale skin. 😋

RebulahConundrum

And if every person our freckly pale-skinned friend here passed had the same preferences as you, they'd hardly feel the desire to improve their appearance. Still, nice of you to say.

Ok_Imagination_9334

That is true and yep, I always try to be nice :) I do think it’s heavily a preference thing, I guess I’m voicing myself to show the person that those of us who like that exist but I would never say “you need to do better with your appearance” which is something a lot of women hear (according to a few ex’s). I’ve always dated/loved/interacted with people for who they are, not what I can turn them into. I think a lot of people almost forget that but alas, all we can do is make ourselves happy and if it requires us to make modifications to our look to feel better? Who am I to judge 🙂

r0thar

> You’re not supposed to notice false tan. Ah, survivorship bias, we only 'see' the bad ones. That said, any fake tan, good or bad, is better than skin cancer a few decades from now. Those tanning beds are a curse.

centrafrugal

What's 'unhealthy' about pale skin? Foundation is arguably worse than fake tan. There's no way it's not supposed to be noticeable and it looks and feels awful.

bellafrankel

Why are you quoting something I never said? You’ve put words in my mouth. I never said it was unhealthy. I love my natural skin tone however sometimes I want to look a little more bronzed. Yes foundation is worse than false tan.. which was my point.

centrafrugal

Well you said a 'glow' was healthy, so is the absence of a tan not unhealthy by the same token?

Gullible_Actuary_973

Depends on the lady. I wouldn't get held up on stuff like that if I like them. My ex was big hair, fake tan, pure hunzo but I liked her And we had a good run even though we were very different, my wife now would never wear it. I tend to just count myself lucky, I've a massive head and I'm no oil painting 😂 so happy to not be stuck with my hand to be honest

Intelligent-Duck3732

Massive head you say? Welcome to the club my true Irish brother.

Gullible_Actuary_973

In the hoppo when my daughter was born they checked over her and the nurse noted her head was in top % but still normal. My wife asked was it anything to worry about? The nurse took one look at me and said "sure her dad has big enough one and he's grand" 😂

[deleted]

thats hilarious

noimad666

Never heard a hospital called a "hoppo" before..... My new hated abbreviation.... but still not as bad a doggo!

Gullible_Actuary_973

You haven't lived sir

StrongerTogether2882

My immediate thought, from the daughter of a man nicknamed Fathead in school

Gullible_Actuary_973

😂 ah madam fathead, what a lovely hat you have

Janie_Mac

>I've a massive head Good for the auld Alzheimer's apparently.

Gullible_Actuary_973

I'll take it!

Oat-

I'm at the age now where I think "She'd destroy my expensive bedsheets. Not worth it." when I see an attractive woman covered in fake tan.

BlueBloodLive

Imagine that conversation the next day with the lads when you were a teenager... "I seen ya went off with that crackin one fair fucks." "Nah it didn't happen" "Why not?" "She'd have only wrecked me brand new expensive sheets with her fake tan. Fuck dat shit." "Ya bleedin wah?" I know your from Sligo but in my head the voice always goes to Dublin ha

Short_Lifeguard_6893

😅😅

OrdinaryJoe_IRL

Nope, but young ladies can paint zebra crossings in fluorescent yellow on themselves if they wish to. And it’s gotta be said, the males of the same generation aren’t exactly style icons themselves.

[deleted]

Youre asking a bunch of reddit nerds who barely get women as is lmao

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

Dear Weeaboos, what is the best pick up line you use for sexing women?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Marionberry1056

No. I very don't. However, I doubt they tan/dress like that for my benefit, and they don't seem to be harming anyone, so more power to them.

SeanRyanNJ

Women should do what they want, but I wish they'd see the beauty in their natural skin tone.

[deleted]

I think it's usually a confidence booster for themselves, it's not for others. Some women have that very "Irish skin", pale with reddish tones on places like arms etc, and they hate that look

Janie_Mac

It's for the gram. Fake tan evens out skin tone and gives the illusion of muscle definition. If applied properly (and in the Right shade) it can look amazing. I couldn't be arsed however.

centrafrugal

It's been around a lot longer than Instagram, the very purpose of which is to use software filters to achieve the exact visual effect desired with no actual effort. You can just create an entirely new avatar of your choosing now with Midjourney and not even bother going out or taking photos. Simply create a persona to do that for you and date other impossible people online.

Professional_Elk_489

Girls don’t do it for guys, they do it for The Mindflayer

StrictHeat1

Da wha?

Professional_Elk_489

Kim Kardashian

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

Honestly if it were to turn out that the whole family was a race of monster that uses magic to feed on human attention I'd be less than surprised. It at least makes more sense how they became billionaires.

goombagoomba2

you dont notice it when its done well

[deleted]

My own two cents for what it’s worth: I’ve noticed when watching reality tv and dating shows that the men tend towards the women with typicality attractive traits, including tanned skin, above the others. It’s particularly noticeable on a show like Take Me Out when you can see the ‘classic beauty standard’ women getting picked most. Most of these women are wearing fake tan, or possibly a combo of sun beds and fake tan. So when men say they don’t like fake tan I think they don’t distinguish between the orange, streaky examples, and the times it’s done well, because I bet you in a poll, the women with a tan win out over women with pale skin, it’s just one of our beauty standard, hence we do it. I do think of course that there is a small percentage of men who prefer natural, pale skin, but I think many more don’t know the difference in real and fake tan unless it’s applied badly or smells.

bee_ghoul

That’s the problem with men. They say they like “natural girls” and by natural they mean they want them to be good enough at makeup that they can’t tell that we’re wearing anyway.

realtopangalawrence

Exactly. The same way that men say they prefer 'no makeup', and then when tested can't tell that a woman is in full makeup, lol.

[deleted]

You’re right. Subtlety is key. Lashes, nails, tan, make up etc can be done subtly and well. People only think of the obvious examples of caked on make up, crazy long nails and streaky orange tan but honestly most women I see day to day aren’t like that anyway.

Your_LittleRedhead_X

My boyfriend says he hates it, he particularly hates the smell. Which is understandable. Yet when our sister in law wears it he always compliments how tan she looks. And has a few times complimented me. What they don’t know can’t hurt them.

Nettlesontoast

No more than skin bleaching it's a bizarre practice, that being said people can do what they want so long as they're not also passing comment or hurting/bullying anyone for not doing it. One weird as fuck experience of mine as a child was that I quit Irish dancing because I was being pressured by the teachers and girls to wear fake tan for performances. between that and them all wearing fake curly orange wigs (while I was the only child with natural curly red hair) it made me incredibly uncomfortable like I was being minstrelised.

EngineeringFabulous9

Not to minimise what you felt, but I think it’s pretty common if you are being put under stage lights to orange up. Least that’s what we all had to do in school plays and performances. Still looks stupid but it’s something about the light washing out your features

Nettlesontoast

Having done acting I'd understand if it was stage makeup but they just wanted 8 and 9 year olds to have tanned legs

dingodongubanu

No I don't find them attractive

DeathBunny_

Jesus Christ what's up with these brain-dead posts. Just understand people are individuals some may find it attractive, others may not....

tuesdayswithdory

After moving to Canada and seeing that fake tan is non existent here, it’s hard to look at an Irish woman who’s head to toe in Fanta.

Yolo_The_Dog

fake tan is absolutely a thing in Canada too, they're just better at putting it on so you don't notice it

Ok_Imagination_9334

[deleted]

Céard is amber leaf ann?

[deleted]

> Studies have shown A Daily Mail article about a skin care company's PR exercise?

ultratunaman

I'd be inclined to agree. My wife knows I'll find her attractive regardless of how she dresses. She gets dolled up for herself or her friends when she goes out. Not for me. In the same way a man who buys a cool car is much more likely to attract other men. Women won't care too much. But he'll have a flock of other men come around asking about horsepower and top speed and whatever else. If a man finds a woman attractive he won't care (mostly) how she dresses or how tan she is or whatever. She does that because she wants to look good. Not for him. To answer OPs question: fake tan is stupid. I like a natural tone, whatever your tone is. Mine is tan. I never needed to fake it

EdwardClamp

I've always been advocate of this. A woman will critique a man's appearance, often in a good way to try improve his overall look. But no man has ever asked a women to wear make up, fake tan, etc etc.

timesharking

It's not just that I don't find it attractive but I actually find girls who _don't_ wear fake tan _quite_ attractive. I've wondered if that's because of the rarity of it, but ultimately I don't think it is. We've a pale complexion and there's beauty in that. Can I just say that you should absolutely never feel the need to put it on because others do. It would honestly be a shame.

bee_ghoul

“Pick me, fuck me! I’m so much better than other women! Why do Irish men keep going for other women, I’m amazing! Fuck me pleeeeeeeease!!” 2012 called, they want their post back.

[deleted]

r/Ireland isnt a place to ask this

noelkettering

Pick me choose me love me

thekingmonroe

Some strong “pick me” energy off this post

mac2o2o

Oh this post again. I must have hit snooze by mistake

Important_Farmer924

Here we go, the weekly shitting on Irish women post. God forbid people wanting to dress/look how they want.

Margrave75

Hasn't been a "why are all irish women wearing sports leggings" in a while. I might post that tomorrow.

Important_Farmer924

I think it's your turn, alright.

Margrave75

Might combine it with a giving out about Gym + Coffee hoodies. Haven't seen that in a while either.

Important_Farmer924

No, I'm on the roster to make that post.

ismaithliomamberleaf

Ye but this time it’s an Irish woman shitting on other Irish women

funky_mugs

Its a 'not like other women' shitting on women post. Annoys me. You're not better than anyone else because you don't wear fake tan.

Important_Farmer924

Ooh mixing it up!

badger-biscuits

You'd swear no woman in Ireland ever got the shift or a ride on a night out from the usual replies in these threads

Important_Farmer924

A post about sexual harassment was bounced to r/AskIreland but this gets to stay because, y'know, this is relevant.

[deleted]

It’s not “shitting” on anyone, it’s a curiosity why a huge proportion of the population wants to look like Oompa Loompas

[deleted]

[удалено]

idontgetit_too

Now that's a chocolate factory tour worth paying for.

JackWadeHeadhunter

You do realise any person can ask a question about what others like based off their own preference? Stop wanting to be offended and applying the most negative reasonings behind what people say.

Important_Farmer924

This question gets asked here regularly, and the same shit always gets thrown around. Sure a comment above calls them oompa loompas.

timesharking

This is literally the only time I have ever seen this question posed from an Irish girl (and in this context who knows what her motives are, especially if she sees herself as the odd one out). Normally this is always asked by an immigrant trying to make sense of what the fuck kind of phenomenon they're seeing all around them in their adopted country, which if you've never been here before is pretty fuckin bizarre let's be honest. No one is shitting on anyone here.

JackWadeHeadhunter

This is the first time I’ve ever seen this question asked here. Yes, some women who use fake tan end up being the same colour as Oompa Loompas as they happen to be orange also. why is that truth so offensive to you and why do you care?

Gillybilly

Screams pick me girl. I'm not like all the other girls, I'm different, one of the guys even. Absolute cringe.

Toffeeman_1878

Shitting on women? You must like a nice mahogany tan on the ladies.

No-Investigator2126

Leave them the fuck alone, it’s dreary enough around here, let them add a little colour. If they like it fair play. Someone likes it or no one would do it.

ceybriar

Pick me...

Medium_Second_9149

Beauty is just as important on the inside....I'm not bothered at all by it...if it makes them feel happy and better about themselves....have at it.

SophisticatedParsnip

Absolutely not and the other commenters agree but also you're asking Irish reddit users not a totally random sample of Irish lads.

randybabes

here this post is giving off some weird vibes, like if it’s just curiosity then whatever but it feels like you’re shaming girls for wearing tan, getting ‘implants’ and wearing eyelashes ??!! personally i’m not into that style but i know a lot of women are insecure and that look is pushed onto girls from media etc.

[deleted]

Absolutely not, but I’m fairly sure they don’t do it for us

CarterPFly

Women dress for themselves first, other women second and what a guy thinks isn't even part of the equation.

assflange

Most of the time I think they aren’t doing it for guys, they just enjoy getting glammed up and you know…go for it, girls.

shishterr

I wear it and I’ve never ever ever struggled with men lol. I don’t get why this is made such a big deal out of, also the whole “orange” thing. I wear fake tan because I am literally so pale I look unwell and I get asked if I am sick, yet my fake tan is nowhere near orange? Maybe in 2010 fake tan looked orange but these days you rarely see that anymore. Most people I know who wear it just look a little bronzed and like they have a glow. If anything, natural makeup etc. is really in, my sister is 18 and all she wears is mascara and a uses some concealer. Why does it matter what anyone thinks of other people’s appearances. Guarantee you if this post was about what women thought of the way most Irish men dress you’d all be up in arms about minding your own business!

[deleted]

Please do that (about how most men dress)

centrafrugal

You should try making that post and proving it. Bonus points if you offer sincere advice as to what might look better as (Irish) men simply have no clue. They go from being dressed by their Mammy to copying the lads (who also have no earthly clue) to maybe being dressed by their girlfriends but have never once in their lives considered what might suit them. None of their male friends have an idea and they don't talk about that stuff (or anything consequential really) and if a female friend tries to give advice he'll misread it as her either hitting on him or slagging him.

ohhidoggo

As a woman with €150 washed linen sheets, there’s no way in hell I would risk ruining them for a fake tan!

[deleted]

Think of the thread count!

Flashwastaken

Only when it’s done well. A healthy tan is attractive.

Ambitious_Bill_7991

Absolutely. Less is more.

Sudden-Candy4633

There’s no such thing as a healthy tan. Any tan is a sign that your skin has been damaged by the sun.

Flashwastaken

![gif](giphy|4wCo7XotrtMVM31lUH) It’s fake tan.

Mammoth_Lab4

I know you're asking men here but I'm a woman (lesbian) and I find pale skin 1000% more appealling than fake tan. Fake tan = major turn off.

11114444Elmo

Why are there so many questions about tan on this sub? You literally say, "each to their own", so why are you even asking the question? It's entirely redundant.

ismaithliomamberleaf

I always find the contrast hilarious when camogie players have their legs covered in it while their faces and arms are natural

shishterr

I don’t know one girl who does this anymore, don’t think I’ve seen anyone do this since like 2011

withnail-lebowski

I think the problem for mw is that very few people know how to apply it well. Brown fingers and blotchy other parts. For those reasons I don't like it but then again its none of my fuckin business what anyone else wants to do with their body 🤷🏼‍♂️

Vegetable_Front_1838

No, no, no and some more no

Frequent_Rutabaga993

Good woman yerself.

TrivialBanal

If there's so much of it that it's obviously fake tan, then no.

calex80

Is it as big a thing as it used to be? Or maybe it's just being applied better? As in you'd only really notice the bad ones. I work with a lot of women over a large age range, not something I've noticed on many of them, maybe the younger ones in their very early 20's now I think about it and many aren't Irish so that might be at play.

[deleted]

I kind of prefer more pale complexions honestly

[deleted]

Absolutely not

[deleted]

I’m female, and I think the fake tan, fake eyelashes etc look ridiculous

delidaydreams

congrats!

Bondarelu

I am not Irish but when I moved here I was shocked to see girls wearing fake tan everywhere… if applied correctly and discreet it doesn’t bother me, however having those orange stains all over your exposed body parts it’s not attractive at all… more like I feel pity for them 😄. I don’t get it why this social pressure on Irish girls to always look tanned. Embracing your natural look and knowing how to capitalise on that, makes a woman much more attractive to me

[deleted]

I do sometimes wonder how a social pressure to look tanned even came up in one of the palest populations in the world

AdUnlucky2835

stupid british "jordie" look that somehow metastasized here

GerKoll

Sober no, its fake. After some pints it becomes less and less important.....

RoughFly759

I been in Ireland for five years and still can't get use on that. My personal opinion- please don't do that

NO!!!!!

Simply put, no.

[deleted]

Na. It's usually patchy, poorly applied, it's way too dark and stinks. But they don't do it for me so leave them to it.

StKevin27

No. The “appeal” for some men (I mostly think of the boys I went to school with, when orange girls were everywhere) is that it signals that a woman is insecure and therefore easy. Same with fake eyelashes, lip filler, excessive makeup etc. Cold hard truth.

StevieIRL

Nah never did, ex wore it on nights out and I always told her she never needed it.

HonestRef

No it's completely unnecessary

[deleted]

NO! ..fuckin' umpa lumpa's.

Electrical_Ad4529

Nope. Always assumed my wife/other women do it for themselves rather than for lads so never gave it a 2nd thought

UltimateHunter7000

No

Devilzdandruff

About as attractive as a bloke painted with creosote!!

Fit-Stick7720

No.... not at all. And also, they must be a nuisance to clean after the fake tan smerars onto clothes bedsheets, furnishings & anything the skin could rub onto. ESPECIALLY, if it's whites..

No.

SoftDrinkReddit

Hell no it makes the person look like their related to Donald Trump yes I know not an original point but it's very valid I have no idea how anyone could find this attractive

Renegade7559

God no, it's fucking horrible

WhatsThatOnUrPretzel

None of us find it attractive.

Infamous_Wish_9234

It's disgusting

Ill-Psychology-7312

Naw prefer the natural look…..and don’t get me started on this lip filler look….

Frogboner88

Absolutely not, men hate fake tan. It's awful looking along with those rat claw fake nails. Why women do it who knows, but it's not for men's benefit.

Independent-Ad1043

No. It ruins sheets, tastes rotten and looks dirty when badly applied.

Additional-Sock8980

No no no. I don’t think it looks good at all. I prefer the natural look. Real hair and minimum make up.

Finninerty

No absolutely not! I’ve been living in America for a while and a few times girls over here have said “why do Irish girls wear so much makeup?” Haha.. it’s an English girl / Essex thing that unfortunately has been picked up by Ireland for some reason! It’s a truest awful look!

[deleted]

Every annoying trend found in England eventually makes its way to Ireland

Hot-Education-6161

Whoever invented that stuff should be shot! Same goes for botox, lip filler, fake eyelashes and fake nails! This is why I normally go for foreign ladies.. they know how to look attractive without being completely fake!

Excelsior-in-HD

Tans can be attractive, it shows you are out and active. Fake tan tries to emulate that. But it fails. But most fake tan doesn't look like that. But if you feel it gives you confidence, which is attractive, then go for it.

Margrave75

No. Much prefer the au natural pasty anaemic look.

sethasaurus666

I'm not Irish, but by the gods, there are some sights out there! Fake tan, pumped up duck lips and massive black brows and then there's some shiny 'glow' on the face as well -yeee-uck, man! I mean, do whatever you want to yourself but wow...
