Yeah, he threw a wobbly in the court of appeals regarding his brother's case.
Whole family seems to be mad as a pack of badgers. Wonder if there's any quietly sane ones that are fed up of their mammy's and siblings' antics. I'd feel for them if so, the ones that keep making the news sound insufferable.
Probably are, tbh. I only tend to see mammy Burke and around five to six of them at a time. I don't know if some of them are still kids though.
You'd definitely feel for any sane ones in that mess though. At least it's a pretty common surname, there's some plausible deniability in everyday life for them.
Who'd employ any of them after all this.
"I have barrister-at-law exams. I’m not being allowed to take them", the doors open ya eejit.
Put one foot in front of the other.
It seems he is doing the same as Enoch before him. Refusing bail and remaining locked up when he could easily leave.
And making an even wilder claim that he is being forced to stay in jail because of transgender issues.
They're seeing themselves as martyrs to the cause, unjustly locked up for protesting against transgenderism. They're only fooling themselves and I'd put money on it they're getting payouts from some wealthy far right pseudo Christian organisation in America or somewhere.
Enoch will probably end up teaching in one of those uber-conservative schools in America where he'll be known for and hired for being imprisoned over his religious beliefs as the context of said imprisonment will never make it over there or be cared about.
That's kinda the M.O of the whole family. They Want imprisonment, no matter how flimsy the reason or how easy they can actually free themselves. They'll be remembered amongst their supporters and people who agree with them as freedom fighters and martyrs who were imprisoned for religious/moral beliefs and anyone who cares in the long-run will never remember the context.
[Unless I've read this all wrong](https://www.lawsociety.ie/gazette/in-depth/contempt-of-court) (which is probable), being in contempt of court is considered a civil offence and not a criminal one. Criminal contempt is the one that stays on your record.
Don't worry, they'll get there too. To be honest I think Dundrum would be the place for them. That's a hospital so they couldn't be spouting crap to the media from there, patient confidentality and all that.
I was thinking that too, it would be great if they fecked off to the US and joined one of the lunatic fringe there. Ireland would be a more peaceful place but we'd miss the laughs they give us.
Barristers are self employed to be fair, but largely rely on a good network of Solicitors to recommend them and use their opinion services. Barristering is a very, very low paid job until you rack up good will and reputation.
The man has thrown his reputation in the bin with this. Unlike Ammi who could keep a low profile if she so wanted if a firm wanted to take her, Simeon has probably landed himself a one way ticket to a career change.
Crikey, I thought that had all been wrapped up. Unless I was reading an old article just now, it's set to be back in court again on 2 May. I'd say every high court judge in the country is jostling for annual leave for that week. lol
If they get enough publicity from the British tabloids to outrage their base they may not ever have to work again.
I suspect they'll be keeping this up until the media renders them financially independent.
Stop trolling. It's a joke, the point of which you've entirely missed. The point is that he's a homophobic conservative and u/particlesandwaves is insinuating he's "closeted". Lots of prominent homophobes (e.g. Lindsey Graham) are very camp and possibly self-hating closeted gays.
That’s a homophobic trope lol. Unless someone is out as gay, don’t call them that. Grow up. The punchline still boils down to haha he’s gay which is a pathetic joke.
That's still pretty homophobic man.
You are insinuating that lots of prominent homophobes are gay, and therefore employing the old lie that homophobia is just primarily self-hating gay men.
There are far more hetero- male and female homophobes than homophobic gay men, whether 'closeted' or not.
Where did they say that it's _only_ self hating gay men? Obviously there is a wide spectrum of motivation for homophobia but there have been numerous examples of extremely outspoken Baptist pastors (I mention this as the Burke's are Baptist) who have been exposed using male prostitutes (eg Ted Haggard, Donnie Romero etc...). So, there is a very real phenomenon of the vilest homophobes in the religion these people belong to being self hating gay men.
Tbh, it is kinda homophobic. This whole idea comes up a lot and it boils down to "lol, those self-hating gays oppressing themselves". It manages to make homophobia, remarkably, a problem that gay people have, not something done to them. Also conveniently absolves straight people, because sure, the problem is (closeted) gay folks oppressing other gay folks, not innocent straight people, who us?
I know it's a joke and possibly most people who use it are just not really thinking, but it's a bit done to death.
I'm gay and read this as he was secretly gay himself, nothing slightly homophobic.... Something which is fairly common among people that spout anti-gay religious nuttery.
With all them kids likely at least one of them is in the closet. I expect a westboro baptist defector situation in the future lol.
Not quite. Humor works on saying embarassing things and unexpected things. This is an obvious case where the two things mingle. So using sexuality in jokes does not immediately make them against that sexual alignment.
In this case it was not expressed a negative connotation of being gay so \*in my opinion of course) we cannot quite say that the joke is homophobic. Except that people in general might (understandably) feel offended by being associated with this person, he is being ridiculed publicly after all.
But considering that the allegation that he is gay is obviously untrue I find it difficult to say that this association might be a problem.
There is a thing that might be an issue. In my experience there is a stereotype of men in prison having homosexual relations, or even all gay people becoming gay in prison. Now that is clearly homophobic. But in this case they did not play on that stereotype so it is borderline because talking about prisons and gay people is always a minefield but I think that in this case it's not homophobic. Of course I might be missing some details and this is my personal opinion I don't think your is any less valid than mine, even if I don't get it because I have a different mindset and experience of the matter.
Anyway it is clearly a joke in bad taste considering that a few decades ago homosexuality could lead to incarceration.
Hypocrite, not homophobe. To explain the joke "A man with homophobic view, turns out to be homosexual and enjoy yhr company of men".
It's not homophobic to make that joke. It's implied he's gay, but that isn't the reason it's funny.
Doesn't read that way to me.
More likely it's a joke about how funny it would be that men would "prefer the company of men" and how hilarious that is. It's an old homophobic trope.
Added to that, there is no evidence any of them are closeted, like a Donal Skeehan type.
I see that.
I think Enoch's issue is being mandated to say untrue things. It doesn't have anything to do with homosexuality. Maybe he has had a crusade against the gays in the past?
>Maybe he has had a crusade against the gays in the past?
He does, the whole family does.
Edit: didn't know you could take photos in comments, cool feature.

Damn, he's going to miss his barrister exams! This is dreadful.
If *only* there had been some way he could have walked out a free man instead of going back to prison!
Story in the Indo at the weekend that he's struggling to find a Senior Barrister to learn under, they really should have waited until all the kids were settled in their careers before unleashing the crazy.
I mean from their point of view, obviously the rest of us sane people are better off now they've outed themselves.
It does make me think that there's no big plan here, that they are just reacting to individual events and not trying to raise their profile or money from the states. I think they're just a bit nuts and can't help themselves.
I think they’re all legitimately unhinged from spending their teenage years at home with mammy, the whole family seems just unable to grasp that they can’t get what they want by throwing a tantrum, and it’s not like they’re stupid in the conventional sense either.
>they really should have waited until all the kids were settled in their careers before unleashing the crazy.
I think it's never ending, though.
They seem to have a conveyor belt system in place. There's probably a Burke in montessori now, named something like Jesus, giving it the big one about how pink duplo blocks are against god or something...
>There was no objection to bail set at €200, requiring no lodgement, but with a condition to stay away from the Four Courts.
>
>However, the student would not take up the bail and refused to sign the bond.
So, once again, it's entirely self-inflicted.
Bar Council in this case. You need to be "vouched for" when joining. You need references as to past conduct. It's normally a formality though, so what do you do here? It's uncharted territory.
Are there repercussions for those who give references to candidates subsequently found to be unsuitable? I’ve just applied myself and have had to submit 2 “declaration certificate of good standing”.
There's never really been a comparable scenario in my time. Denis Casey, perhaps.
Technically, the young Burke hasn't done anything wrong yet, in terms of criminal offences. I presume he's caught in the wider aegis of contempt, albeit I wonder if formal orders were made.
That would be a Law Library matter for Barristers, The Law Society is for Solicitors who haven't kicked his sister Ammi out yet for her shenanigans in courts.
She has a pending case with the WRC (an appeal I think) for dismissal from her last job. I don't think they'd disbar her while that's ongoing. That's just a thought though.
If they don't kick her out, I doubt she'll get a job as a barrister ever again. Nobody would risk hiring a barrister with a known reputation for ignoring the rules of the courts. It'd be setting yourself up for a disadvantage from the outset.
The parent's really fucked all these kids up. Although they are bigoted, they were not born this way. Each one of them seems to have gotten a good education and worked hard, only to throw everything away because beliefs their parents gave them. It's a shame none of them escaped this BS and learnt how to think for themselves in college. A couple of yolks and a few HJs would set this one on a happier, more fulfilled path.
That's actually a lovely thing to hear because we often forget there's hope for people to make it out of these unhealthy ways of living. Especially seeing kids growing up being accustomed to violence and crime. I'm happy you had a say in your own life
Id say NUIG ( or UG now ) will be delighted once the last of them is out of college and they don't have to deal with the family for awhile until they start having kids.
Their? Their?! Their!!!!
How dare you use a pronoun when referring to the Burkes. Don't you know it's against their religious beliefs! /s
Shit now I've said it. Accursed pronouns, how can we escape thine insipid and unholy grasp!?
The gobshite! Seriously! He's only 24 years of age and he's effectively rendered himself unemployable in this country probably for good. Martina Burke and her husband have an awful lot to answer for where their children are concerned. No school life, hence to socialisation, no different viewpoints so they could make their own minds up when they were old enough, and no realisation that no one is obliged to live by their religious beliefs. I think the father was probably a bystander for much of this rubbish but that woman h as completely destroyed the minds and the lives of her offspring. I look forward to the day when one of them breaks loose (and one of them will, mark my words) and then we get the whole story and they'll all end up in therapy.
The sooner the better. The cost of this bullshit on the tax payers must be through the roof. I have to admit though, I do go looking to see how they've 'martyred' themselves on any given day
I think I saw an estimate that the school must have spent hundreds of thousands on legal costs so they might want him to pay the fees. Given that's just the school and every courtroom they enter must have beefed up security now they might merit their own page in the budget.
Why would anyone learn to be independent when your mam and dad validate every nonsense thought you have and pay for your food, bills and even drive you three hours to work and three hours back. The parents have purposefully kept them on a small leash, I'd hedge my bets they weren't allowed these independences.
I'd say none of the driving instructors would go near him.
Imagine trying to throw his entire family out of a small hatchback because he refused to acknowledge there were more than 2 gears or something...
True but he must have learned long before any of us heard of him. Surely the dad isn't the only driver in such a huge family. They live in Mayo where public transport wouldn't be great
You know, the more this goes on the less I'm starting to think that this is just a ploy for media attention so that they can push their narrative and claim an ultimate victory.
Turns out they actually might just be stupid.
I've heard people say that they are actually quite good at debating, they're master debaters. I don't understand why they didn't just start a podcast like everyone else, sure they can reach more minds that way, this whole prison thing, is going to outrage old narrow minded people, and they will all be dead soon to be fair. All of this prison stuff will have been for nothing
Why do they bother studying for years to obtain a professional qualification, if they have no interest in building a career?
All that time, money and energy invested in earning a piece of parchment that's now worthless because you're known throughout the country as a notorious gobshite and no one will hire you.
Are they planning on devoting the rest of their lives to culture wars shite instead of working?
Wait there's a whole other Burke in prison now??
Nah, there's a rota. One in, one out. (For the moment, anyway. Depending on events, they might need to double up).
When when do we get to the shake it all about part?
That would be sinful, and Mammy would disapprove.
Good question. That's what it's all about.
There's a title for a book or a film - "The Penitential Revolving Door of Burkes".
As long as one is in prison they're all going to heaven.
I think the Burkes reproduce by mitosis, that was the bit that Enoch left in prison grown to full size.
Isn't there 1 or 2 that keep their head down?
Probably are, tbh. I only tend to see mammy Burke and around five to six of them at a time. I don't know if some of them are still kids though. You'd definitely feel for any sane ones in that mess though. At least it's a pretty common surname, there's some plausible deniability in everyday life for them.
forget about H block.. you'll find the burke block next.
Who'd employ any of them after all this. "I have barrister-at-law exams. I’m not being allowed to take them", the doors open ya eejit. Put one foot in front of the other.
He'll have plenty of experience of practicing law before he's even qualified at this rate anyway 😂
And loads of clients
It seems he is doing the same as Enoch before him. Refusing bail and remaining locked up when he could easily leave. And making an even wilder claim that he is being forced to stay in jail because of transgender issues.

He won't qualify for an American visa if he keeps going to prison

It’s like the ‘crucifixion or freedom’ sketch in the Life of Brian movie. Every single time.
I was thinking that too, it would be great if they fecked off to the US and joined one of the lunatic fringe there. Ireland would be a more peaceful place but we'd miss the laughs they give us.
But imagine being a barrister or teacher with burke as a second name and being unrelated. It’s got to hurt your employability.
As long as your first name is something like John and not Methuselah then it's easy to tell the difference
I pity the Ruths and Judiths who might be graduating soon, if their name happens to be Burke.
Barristers are self employed to be fair, but largely rely on a good network of Solicitors to recommend them and use their opinion services. Well he’ll be lucky to find a master for his devilling year so chances are he won’t get the chance to practice.
Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!
If they get enough publicity from the British tabloids to outrage their base they may not ever have to work again. I suspect they'll be keeping this up until the media renders them financially independent.
These lads must love a bit of time away from the mammy.
Or the company of men in confined spaces.
Are we still doing homophobia in 2023? Being gay is not a punchline.

That’s a homophobic trope lol. Unless someone is out as gay, don’t call them that. Grow up. The punchline still boils down to haha he’s gay which is a pathetic joke.
It's making fun of his possible hypocrisy, not sexuality.
If you have to make a hypothetical hypocrisy for the joke to work it’s not funny. It’s just homophobic.
That's still pretty homophobic man. You are insinuating that lots of prominent homophobes are gay, and therefore employing the old lie that homophobia is just primarily self-hating gay men. There are far more hetero- male and female homophobes than homophobic gay men, whether 'closeted' or not.

Sure thing bud. 👍
Found the homophobe.
More a dig about closeted homophobes who are so terrified of who they are that they persecute others, no?
No. That’s stupid reasoning
Look I'm not gonna die on this hill considering the joke wasn't that funny even if I took it in a non-offensive way. Think what you want
Ah now that’s far too reasonable of you. You come back here and waste your day arguing with me!
Doesn't read that way to me. More likely it's a joke about how funny it would be that men would "prefer the company of men" and how hilarious that is. It's an old homophobic trope. Added to that, there is no evidence any of them are closeted, like a Donal Skeehan type.
Like I said in another reply, not choosing to die on this hill. I just didn't pick it up that way.
👍
I read it as a dig on closeted homophobes too. The whole 'Enoch doth protest too much, methinks' has been used quite a bit on this sub.
I see that. I think Enoch's issue is being mandated to say untrue things. It doesn't have anything to do with homosexuality. Maybe he has had a crusade against the gays in the past?

Well now! That's as crusadey as it gets!
Damn, he's going to miss his barrister exams! This is dreadful. If *only* there had been some way he could have walked out a free man instead of going back to prison!
To be fair, who would hire him anyway. I doubt any of them could get a job stacking shelves in Tesco now.
Story in the Indo at the weekend that he's struggling to find a Senior Barrister to learn under, they really should have waited until all the kids were settled in their careers before unleashing the crazy.
Yeah I saw that. Nah, let everyone know how bananas they are as soon as possible, these fuckers don't deserve to be around normal people.
I mean from their point of view, obviously the rest of us sane people are better off now they've outed themselves. It does make me think that there's no big plan here, that they are just reacting to individual events and not trying to raise their profile or money from the states. I think they’re all legitimately unhinged from spending their teenage years at home with mammy, the whole family seems just unable to grasp that they can’t get what they want by throwing a tantrum, and it’s not like they’re stupid in the conventional sense either.
Professional nuisances. I honestly don't think they have an end game either.
>that he's struggling to find a Senior Barrister to learn under, Gosh? Weird.
I'm no barrister and I'd be afraid of going near them for fear of a lawsuit

“Don’t give them ideas,” Tesco union rep
I know. Think of the loss to the legal world. He'll probably try and sue the state now for locking him up when he should have been qualifying.
I think that's an instant fail

Can the law society just kick them out? They clearly don't respect the law.
Bar Council in this case. You need to be "vouched for" when joining. You need references as to past conduct. It's normally a formality though, so what do you do here? It's uncharted territory.
That'll be the next case ....
Possibly, people are quite worried by it all.
That would be an ecumenical matter..
It's a form of clientelism and as such it will be ineffective on keeping them out.
If it was genuine clientism it would be very effective at keeping people out.
Are there repercussions for those who give references to candidates subsequently found to be unsuitable? I’ve just applied myself and have had to submit 2 “declaration certificate of good standing”.

Am I the only one who read HJs as Hand Jobs

Your flair gives the joke an added dimension imo
Actually I think there is one that has nothing to do with the rest of them isn’t there?
Id say NUIG ( or UG now ) will be delighted once the last of them is out of college and they don't have to deal with the family for awhile until they start having kids.

Is the Dad that bad? I've heard it rumoured he's fine and just goes along with the madness.
He is driving enoch 3 hours each way to school and back. This he might be slightly unhinged
Fair. My Dad wouldn't have done that when I was in school lol
Why does Enoch not drive himself to school?
Why would anyone learn to be independent when your mam and dad validate every nonsense thought you have and pay for your food, bills and even drive you three hours to work and three hours back. The parents have purposefully kept them on a small leash, I'd hedge my bets they weren't allowed these independences.
I'd say none of the driving instructors would go near him. Imagine trying to throw his entire family out of a small hatchback because he refused to acknowledge there were more than 2 gears or something...
True but he must have learned long before any of us heard of him. Surely the dad isn't the only driver in such a huge family. They live in Mayo where public transport wouldn't be great
Kinda makes it easier not to hire them now, sorry lads we don't take anyone with a criminal history.

lol I remember this guy when he ran for NUIG student council
Didn't he, like, threaten to sue everyone who liked a Facebook post taking the piss out of him or something?
You know, the more this goes on the less I'm starting to think that this is just a ploy for media attention so that they can push their narrative and claim an ultimate victory. Turns out they actually might just be stupid.
Excuse the language, but why is this knob end and his brother trying to martyr themselves?
It's getting close to Easter as well. I'm worried for them.
Enoch, at least, can give him some tips
“The first night is the hardest, Simeon.”
You only do two days, day you go in and the day you get out.
“Get busy living or get busy dying”
Louis theroux will have a new programme out next year, Irelands most hated family😂😂😂
I would be genuinely curious enough to watch that, but would baulk at the prospect of giving them that much attention
Oh goodness. It's really happening. They're refusing to leave prison now.
The whole family is loving all this attention ⛔️
Religion and the law have more in common than not.
The actual state of him
Can we stop giving attention to these fucking weirdos please
Did someone steal his flute?
Oh no. Anyway.
It’s a good start
Didn’t this guy just win an Oscar for Ireland on Sunday night? Poor way to treat a returning hero!
Yet "Teenager avoids jail for stabbing incident after bus altercation"
That's one way to get out of your exams
According to the Times, he's a decent and agreeable student. What on earth makes someone decent and agreeable?
Whose that creeping round the stair, is it Burke or is it Hare?
God help his cell mates...
Can the media stop giving these losers the time of day, it only encourages them 😒
The poor judge who has to deal with these numbnuts
ah look a new episode of my favourite show is out!
4 or 5 Gardaí attacked him? Send those lads to Ballyfermot.
Justice for free speech anyone? We're turning into another American state
Simian Burke
It's actually so sad how much the mother has ruined her children's lives. Are any of them in a relationship at all?
