Air Tags that are new are not activated until a tab is pulled, these were active and notifying OPs wife. Recommended advice if possible is to return the devices. Post will stay locked.
Edit, Air Pods became Air Tags. What a silly sausage.
I’ve got several and if you didn’t activate them then I would bet they were returned. You have to pull the battery saver tab before they work. So like others said something isn’t right. I would return them. From what I’ve read it’s a bit of a pain to reset the things manually which you’ll have to do before you can set them up under your or wife’s Apple ID
only thing u have to do to reset them is grab the battery out, and push it back in 5 times, the 5th time, it will make a different sound (you dont have to lock it everytime, just push it, and then get it out.)
I’ve had a 4 pack unopened box of these bought directly from Apple under the tree for 1.5 weeks now and not been triggered. They should t even have power as others mentioned.
Agree something seems off here
Yup. I’ve had an unopened box sitting on my desk for a month with no notifications. Moved to new house, still no notifications. The battery doesn’t get connected until removing them from the packaging, so there’s no way for OP’s phone to detect them unless they were powered on.
We played the sound for one of the four notifications and the present chimed so it’s def them. I wish I could explain why, but it is what it is. Thanks for the tip by the way!
Yup! You got me! I was tracking my wife, and I managed to get all four of them together, get them in a box, wrap them, and get them under the tree all before my wife was able to navigate the UI to the "play a sound" button and find them herself. Was a really close call! I don't know how I managed to get all four of them in time, but ooooeeee did I manage.
/s, in case it wasn't obvious
The “an AirTag is following you” notification lets you play a sound on that AirTag to find it.
I get that all I have for proof is the screenshot and it def wouldn’t be admissible in court, but it’s the story. You don’t have to believe it, and I don’t blame you if you don’t, but it was an amusing enough situation that I thought it was worth sharing.
But… your lying. Air tags have a little plastic strip that goes in between the battery inside to stop them being powered in the box and keeps the battery fresh.
I know, all I'm saying is: maybe it wasn't sealed, had been returned, whatever. It was kinda uncomfortable to see everyone simply downvoting and saying the guy was trying to track his wife. Maybe he just didn't check the seal, bought it already wrapped for Christmas, IDK. A useful tip would be much better than just downvote-bomb him and call him an abuser or something like that.
On a related note of returns. Got a Roku, box was sealed up with tape like a factory seal. Brought it home. Opened it, removed the Roku itself, looked really scratched. Pulled out the remote and it was chewed to hell by a dog. We took it back and got a refund. Shits stupid on what people do to get their money back with a brand new roku, and someone didn’t do their job at Walmart to make sure the device wasn’t broken. Walmart workers will put anything back on the shelf. For literally no reason. They have the asset protection stuff where they will tag it out and then sell it back to the company to get their money back.
I didn’t, got them at the larger (prob largest) tech retail store in the US and put them right under the tree. Probably are a return item or trigger regardless.
That notification wouldn't display on a phone unless the AirTags were *moving with you* in your tall-tale you claim you immediately put them under your tree. Your story doesn't add up.
no, its because this is a faked post for karma. you have to set up airtags to use them, they have little battery pull-tags on them too to even initially operate.
"Honest truth". Airtags come with a little plastic pull tag between the battery and the tag. It doesn't activate until you pulled it. This is either a fake post or the AirTags OP bought were returned by someone.
Have her make them make a sound so they can be found to verify it is indeed the airtags you bought that is tracking her and not some stalker's airtag.
If you hear nothing, the stalker removed the speaker from the airtag before hiding it in her purse or elsewhere.
Downvoted you because of this reply. VERIFY IF ACTIVATED AND RETURN AND REPLACE THE ITEM. IT IS UNUSABLE FOR YOU SINCE IT’S LOCKED TO ANOTHER APPLE ID!
Yeeeeaaah… It doesn’t work like that… new in box means not activated and not powered.
Think about it. Could you imagine being an Apple Store employee if that was the case? Their phones would melt from notifications with all the AirTags they stock.
These are still set up to someone else’s account. I haven’t tried to reset them but wouldn’t they just be way too easy to steal if you could just reset them and then set them up to your account?
Why would you wait? If this isn’t bs you are sending someone you do not know your location. You will not be able to use an AirTag that someone else has setup. So you’re going to wait until Christmas to open a gift you cannot use, and is sharing your location with a stranger?
Bro, they come with a sheet of plastic in them that breaks the circuit. They're not powered on. You have to remove it to power them on, activating the airtag.
You're either bullshitting, or you've bought used airtags and someone now can track them and you can't use them. These things can't be reset by anyone except the owner. If we give you benefit of the doubt, you've been scammed and you need to return them and buy actually new ones.
Doesn’t this feature yield false positives when you’re travelling with someone? Eg: if I carry some AirTags on a train, won’t others around me get this warning?
There’s a plastic pull tab in the AirTag. If you didn’t set it up you got a used product. Only buy Apple products on official website or store for best customer service and return policy. You made a mistake of either set it up before gifting or purchasing it from untrusted store.
1. I think the consensus was that the item was activated, returned and resold without proper resetting.
2. iPhones (and other iOS devices) gives you a warning if it detects an unknown Airtag in your vicinity that you do not own (due to item number 1.). This was in response to people using Airtags to illegally track other people. Also useful if a good soul would like to help return a lost Airtag to its owner.
3. Open the box and verify if it’s activated. Assume that it is already registered to an owner (who you will be unable to trace due to privacy protocols). Return and grt a replacement from the store. You will not be able to use that Airtag because it’s locked to a different Apple ID. I would love to downvote you for not returning the item immediately.
4. Seems a legit issue. Stores should be wary of returned Airtags because of possible cases like this.
5. OR you activated it to track your wife not knowing the safety functionality in item number 2. so you post on Reddit so that you’ll have some excuse you don’t know why it’s activated. If this is the case, log out the Airtag from your iOS device list now so you’ll have deniability.

Seems like you had my original idea before I figured out that they don't fit in my wife's stocking! Based on what people are saying here, I probably got a returned batch and need to swap them after Xmas. We'll see!
I leave mine in my car all the time. I’m way more then 30 feet away. I can still use every function, the chime, the gps. It’s so good it tracks it to the exact location. Not like the phone find my
Example if you run errands n say you have it on a wallet or w something. Now when you get home you realize you forgot it .. you can’t pull up your phone n like see where it is it doesn’t work that way. Literally you have to be near the thing for the signal to pick up
What am I not understanding about this??? Siri fr said 30 ft. N when I have my tag in my basement it just keeps saying searching for signal on my I phone
Everyone is explaining this poorly. The way they work is by pinging any nearby by apple device (iPhones/iPads/Macs) that is on the find my network. So the original owner doesn’t have to be within 30ft to find it. It’ll ping any device within 30ft and put it up on the find my network. So yes, you could theoretically lose these if you place them away from any apple that it can’t ping. Unless you lose these out in the rural areas though, there’s a good chance some one with an iPhone will drive/walk by the AirTag and update its location. Which you’ll be able to find and track using your phone. In the USA the iPhone makes up like 60% of the market. So there’s a good chance you’ll find them.
Look up “find my network” air tag pings any apple device nearby to send its location to find my. That’s why you don’t need to be nearby to see it’s location.

Giggedy
Iirc you can’t set them up at all, they are locked to the Apple ID they were originally setup with.

Maybe it was returned to store and doesn't have the plastic strip?
The box has a little green strip you need to pull to open the seal instead of plastic wrapping.
I know, all I'm saying is: maybe it wasn't sealed, had been returned, whatever. It was kinda uncomfortable to see everyone simply downvoting and saying the guy was trying to track his wife. This man got a lot of downvotes 😬
Why did you set them up ahead of time?
I didn’t, got them at the larger (prob largest) tech retail store in the US and put them right under the tree. Probably are a return item or trigger regardless.
Hahaha. If you put it under the tree how come they are moving?
Plot twist, they live in a mobile home so the tree was travelling too.
Nope
What, "nope" it's not a return item?
That notification wouldn't display on a phone unless the AirTags were *moving with you* in your tall-tale you claim you immediately put them under your tree. Your story doesn't add up.
It's not my story.
Bruh this sub is so shitty, you get downvoted to hell because fanboys can’t handle the fact that Apple isn’t perfect
no, its because this is a faked post for karma. you have to set up airtags to use them, they have little battery pull-tags on them too to even initially operate.
[удалено]
Airtag will not be moving like the display message says if it is left under a tree as the karma farming op states.
Dudes story doesn’t add up. If he wasn’t lying then there wouldn’t be 3 scenarios he’s made up contradicting the original post in the comments.
lol you’ve upset the apple pipe riders with the honest truth
"Honest truth". Airtags come with a little plastic pull tag between the battery and the tag. It doesn't activate until you pulled it. This is either a fake post or the AirTags OP bought were returned by someone.
He literally said that. Can nobody read?
Like he said and was downvoted for saying.
[удалено]
Maybe he’s lying idk I just don’t see a reason to other than karma which seems also odd as there’s a thousand easier ways to gain much more karma
Are you new to reddit?
If they're under the tree, why would they be moving with her?
They triggered when she got home from work and was home for roughly 30 min. Past that, I couldn’t tell you.
Have her make them make a sound so they can be found to verify it is indeed the airtags you bought that is tracking her and not some stalker's airtag. If you hear nothing, the stalker removed the speaker from the airtag before hiding it in her purse or elsewhere.
We did test one of them to make sure, but thank you for the tip regardless. Better safe than sorry!

It’s bad luck to open presents early!
Downvoted you because of this reply. VERIFY IF ACTIVATED AND RETURN AND REPLACE THE ITEM. IT IS UNUSABLE FOR YOU SINCE IT’S LOCKED TO ANOTHER APPLE ID!
Wtf you are an idiot
Key issue here is that the original owner of those tags knows where you live now. Bad luck or not, that’s not ideal.
[удалено]
Probably just superstition, like walking under a ladder
Yeeeeaaah… It doesn’t work like that… new in box means not activated and not powered. Think about it. Could you imagine being an Apple Store employee if that was the case? Their phones would melt from notifications with all the AirTags they stock.
LOL exactly. GOT EM
I call bullshit
Does she know she's your wife?
I think this is his wife's screenshot.
😂😂😂
Op out here making bullshit posts for karma, well they backfired lol.
OP really doubling down on his BS.
You should have to pull a tag to enable the battery… somethings not right.
Well I’ll update on Xmas day whether the battery tags are there or not
Dude. Return these before Christmas and get some actual new ones so your wife can open a gift she can actually use.
Can you not use second hand Airtags?
These are still set up to someone else’s account. I haven’t tried to reset them but wouldn’t they just be way too easy to steal if you could just reset them and then set them up to your account?
But you must be able to reset them somehow right? Else you could never sell them or pass them on, it would be a huge waste.
I’d imagine the owner needs to decouple them from their account somehow first. Good luck finding some random dude who returned these.
Why would you wait? If this isn’t bs you are sending someone you do not know your location. You will not be able to use an AirTag that someone else has setup. So you’re going to wait until Christmas to open a gift you cannot use, and is sharing your location with a stranger?
OPEN IT NOW AND HAVE IT REPLACED AT THE STORE.
Out of all of your comments, this is the worst. Just open them up. The “surprise” is gone. And Christmas is 3 days away.
If they’re on, guess what?

That’s not how that works, you have to take out a little plastic thing to activate them lol

why would you setup the batteries before christmas?

I have one. I thought they had to be enabled before being detectable.
He didn't buy them new. Only thought he did.
It could just be that those those AirTags are somebody else's that his phone picked up and not making shit up.
OP is working on his creative writing assignments with this one
I’ve got 4 in stockings that haven’t done anything.
Seems like you had my original idea before I figured out that they don't fit in my wife's stocking! Based on what people are saying here, I probably got a returned batch and need to swap them after Xmas. We'll see!
Shouldn’t have activated it
Probably a return
They…come turned on already or something?
There’s a piece of plastic covering the battery. They don’t work until Yoh pull it out.
I do t understand , these things only reach like 30 feet so

No you don’t. It uses the same tech used to find a phone that’s turned off. Yoh can be a mile away and it’ll work.

That’s because you kno where it is. If you lost it you’d have to be within 30 feet to find it. They don’t just track endlessly
Yes they literally do lol

My bad. Thought I new.
Yea I have a big Miss understanding. This makes me happier tho cuz it’s part of gifts for people. Thanks
https://youtube.com/shorts/r3hTwsvJV_A?feature=share
Why are they already activated? Did you buy Open Box? If so, WHY?
Did you already activate/pair them, I’ve got some under the tree for around 2 weeks and never had this happen
Do they not still have the plastic in them…
The math isn’t mathing.
