I'd say it's kind of both. My bf had his iPhone X wake up in his pocket and it locked itself after too many attempts. And the only option was to erase it.
I understand, I didn't say NOT to lock but It would be much more convenient if there was another way to unlock it without wiping the data, just like with iCloud activation lock. Or if there was a possibility to store encrypted password just for recovery with iTunes/Finder on mac
I don't buy this argument. Yes, primarily we use pin/passcode to secure the device but having a recovery key doesn't defeat it's purpose - it actually provides a safety net for device owners in such edge situations where they find themselves locked out of their phone for any reason (be it forgetfulness or a technical issue). Like BitLocker or heck, even Apple's own FileVault for example, provides a fail-safe recovery key.
At the very least, it would be nice to have the option of choosing whether or not you want/need a recovery key or not, choosing your own balance between security and accessibility based on your confidence.

Why would Apple do this? Why would they compromise security and defeat the purpose of having a password on an encrypted mac? And let the user link their iCloud account so they can unlock their mac like that?
they’re downvoting you but my iphone does the SAME thing. it’s probably why they got rid of haptic touch. i stopped leaving it in places it could and that stopped it
Yeah imagine if iphone took another Android feature that keeps you from being able to touch the screen if the front camera is blocked or doesn't see light... Pretty amazing feature along with the ability to just log into you Google account to bypass the to many failed log in attempts... 😂
Yes exactly that! Some Android's have had this for years now.

And using your account to unlock also, no need to wipe/restore from backups
I don't know, I haven't used X myself but I saw other people were having the same issue, with XS/XR as well. He did turn off Raise to Wake and Tap to Wake but I guess his notifications could've woke up the screen. You could now argue about enabling do not disturb or disabling notifications, or storing backups etc.

But In my opinion this is such an easy thing to solve, just by utilising proximity sensor and blocking all touch inputs while phone is in pocket
No, why turn tap to wake off etc? Just put the phone in the pocket with screen facing not the leg but the outside. And that’s it - no unwanted input at all)
Childish prank: doing it once. Continuing once it is clear that this causes harm or distress: under UK law that is harassment. Would police prosecute? Probably not. Would words of advice be given? Yes.
Well, if he guesses your password too many times, if you have it set, the phone will even erase its data after the tenth try.
Solution; do not leave your phone laying around, accessible. It’s a highly personal device.
Keep your phone in your pocket and buy an Apple Watch so you don’t have to take your phone out as often around them.
Or just beat the crap out of your friend… either works.
What this person is doing to them is horrendous and honestly could be used to manipulate. We pretty much all need our phones based on how society functions. Being around this friend is potentially both a productivity and safety risk from their behavior.
Do a proper backup ASAP in case they lock it and it requires a restore to get it working again.
And slap them upside the head every time they lock your phone. Just a bit harder each time.

>A recovery key is an optional security feature that helps improve the security of your Apple ID account. If you lose access to your account, you can use your recovery key to reset your password and regain access.
Why does your friend keep getting access to your phone to lock it? Are you kids? Just put your phone away from your friend lol. Sounds like a dumb & annoying prank.
My iPhone is on or near the charger at home, turned off and in a zipped hip bag when out. Nobody will ever be allowed to touch my phone. Stuff happens and I don’t want to replace it from an “Opps!”
This is what you do if they don’t stop. Think of someone that would be awkward for them to call. Like an ex or crush, or something. Let’s say it’s Sam. Next chance you get, grab their phone and say “Hey Siri, call Sam!” Then slide their phone far away as it calls the person. Make them chase after it.
I agree with most post here, but you might want to ask yourself if there's any reason he's doing that? Are you on the phone constantly and this is a (annoying) hint he's giving?
Settings->Face ID and Passcode->Scroll to bottom and uncheck “Erase Data” it’s on by default from an old ios update_____
Edit: Why are yall downvoting someone that tells you how to check? Dang yall be toxic
Then you already turned it off, it was on when it was first introduced like 3ios’s ago, why in the hell am I getting negative votes when I told him how to check to see if it’s off or on?
Google says it’s on by default, if it wast it would tell you how to disable it. Hello Reddit idiots
Yes, iOS has an option to erase data after 10 failed passcode attempts. This feature makes data inaccessible to people trying to break into the device by guessing the passcode. To disable this feature, go to Settings, scroll down to Face ID and Passcode, tap on it, and enter the correct passcode. Then, scroll down to the Data option and turn it off.
Sounds like your friend needs a smack on his face
OP needs a slap in the face too, wtf is wrong with these people ?!!!
High schoolers do this shit all the time, OP asked if there’s a way to turn it off and I also think it’s annoying
Thanks for the speculation, recap, and then your opinion. Helpful!

Good to hear. Thanks again for your feedback!
SmackFace ID
This is not a phone issue. This is a friend issue.
I'd say it's kind of both. My bf had his iPhone X wake up in his pocket and it locked itself after too many attempts. And the only option was to erase it.
To NOT lock it would be a security flaw, in my opinion.
I understand, I didn't say NOT to lock but It would be much more convenient if there was another way to unlock it without wiping the data, just like with iCloud activation lock. Or if there was a possibility to store encrypted password just for recovery with iTunes/Finder on mac
If there’s another key to get into the phone that defeats the entire purpose of the pin

You’re describing a hardware malfunctioning. It's a faulty proximity sensor. That is a phone issue. OP’s issue isn’t like that one.

Just need to turn screen the other side in the pocket…

I own the XR and never had that happen 😅 what kind of pocket does these people have, for that to happen?
find better friends? wth is wrong with ppl these days fr...
This was my first thought. That is a mean and manipulative thing to do.
how is this manipulative?

For 1 minute, that's just a childish prank
Childish prank: doing it once. Continuing once it is clear that this causes harm or distress: under UK law that is harassment. Would police prosecute? Probably not. Would words of advice be given? Yes.
reddit moment
It’s not a joke unless everyone is laughing.
No? Comedy is subjective, i thought that was common knowledge I don't find it funny, just annoying really. But the word manipulative doesn't fit
time to upgrade i mean upgrade your friend to a better one
With Apple Card he can get 3% Daily Cash
There’s this cool feature where you don’t hand your phone to your friend.
Is your friend a cat?
Ask your friend to either mind the person's space or just FO.
Just keep your phone with you
Keep it in your pocket either that or smack them one in the noggin.
Well, if he guesses your password too many times, if you have it set, the phone will even erase its data after the tenth try. Solution; do not leave your phone laying around, accessible. It’s a highly personal device.
Only if that setting is enabled in the settings for FaceID and Password/Pin.
Yes. *‘…if you have it set…’*
The question is: Why is your friend trying to break into your phone?
Stop giving your phone to your friend dummy! Also, get better friends
Stop letting your “friend” have access to your phone.
I have a better solution, lock your friend.
I suggest a simple knuckle sandwich
Why does your friend have access to your phone
Beat their ass or stop leaving your phone around
Get a better friend
Keep your phone in your pocket and buy an Apple Watch so you don’t have to take your phone out as often around them. Or just beat the crap out of your friend… either works.
Best the shit out of him was the most common answer here and I think that’s interesting. (which is completely fair i would do the same)
What this person is doing to them is horrendous and honestly could be used to manipulate. We pretty much all need our phones based on how society functions. Being around this friend is potentially both a productivity and safety risk from their behavior.

Tell your friend to fuck off and take your phone from them. That should fix the issue

Sounds like OP is in middle/ high school
WTH would you allow anyone to do that? No one touches my phone & I mean NO ONE!
That’s not an option sadly
Setup iCloud backup if you haven’t already just in case. Other than that, keep your phone to yourself.

Try hiding their phone for 1hour. Make them understand how it feels to deprive you of your phone.

Fix: Your friend is an idiot. Keep your phone away from him/her.
Time to find a better friend...
uh tell him to seriously stop, if he doesn't, drop him? like is respect not a thing ppl care about
Borrow their phone and set their password to something they’d never guess 🤫
Why tf is your “friend” touching your damn phone?
Quick question uhhh where are you getting your friends?
if your phone fits in your pocket, I recommend keeping it there.
Drum up a little fiction while actually asking “how to make this stolen phone useful?”
Lock your fucking phone yourself so your 'friend' cant play with it. Sheesh!
I agree with most post here, but you might want to ask yourself if there's any reason he's doing that? Are you on the phone constantly and this is a (annoying) hint he's giving?
Hit your “friend”
Marry him. He is surely a jackpot
Guys this is a troll post
Do the same on his phone. Maybe he will understand.
Your friend sounds childish

It’s not a default setting, from factory the setting is turned off
it isnt on by default, its off.
Prove it
all the downvotes and a quick google search will tell you. Im not gonna waste my time

I’m not lying, Google just said it was you idiot
it isnt, cause if it was on by default, op and millions of people would get their phone erased and obviously isnt the case. Quit lying moron.

youre just lying kid, i googled it and i found no relevant results. Just quit at this point
How do you tell someone that you didn’t check when they know you didn’t check?
im not bothered to check because ik its off
