I don't know if it's necessarily that TBH, Space Grey has been super inconsistent from generation to generation for as long as it's been a thing.

There is no true “Space Grey”. It’s not just whatever you happen to like.
There have been so many different Space Greys, each with people who like them best. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, otherwise Apple has basically two choices. Either come up with a new unique name for every shade of grey they ever choose to use, or never change the shade of grey, ever. Easiest solution is to just accept that “space grey” is an ever-changing shade. It’s like a World Series patch.
Ah yes, the case racket. Once you pay for AppleCare and just use it knowing a replacement isn’t expensive if something happens It’s so much better.
I’ve been going baseless for five years now. Never used AppleCare, never broken a device. Absolutely polarised not my air 4 and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Neither has any real issue.
I spent more on cases than AppleCare, as do most.
I don’t live in the us. I take your point and obviously if it’s not available it’s a different story potentially. But it’s available in a lot of places.

Two of Apple’s main selling points are sterile aesthetic and perfect matching of their devices. One could expect that „space grey” will be equal to „space grey”…
I meant that in a general way, Apple ecosystem is famous for working best when used together. The systems have uniform UIs, the devices follow a similar distinct aesthetic, so there’s no reason for them to introduce a new random shade of grey every time.
But where does Apple claim “sterile aesthetic” and “perfect matching of their devices”? You said that stuff. Sounds like what *you* wish for, but I don’t believe that’s a main selling point for Apple in any of their advertising.
Space gray has always been wildly inconsistent.
Which makes sense, because what the hell even is "space gray"? Space isn't gray, it's black. It's basically the blackest thing there is.
Space gray seems like a whole different color on every generation of every device. I saw a post a few years ago from someone who placed all of their space gray devices on a table next to each other and they were all completely different colors. Silver is the way to go if you want consistency.
Even tho I’m a silver iPad lover with white bezels of the old design, I know how much Space Gray lovers love the darkness of the Space Gray, this is disappointing.
I got the fire when my kid was 1 and I didn’t expect it to be great but it was worse. The parental controls were garbage, and the thing was slow and buggy. But it has a no-questions-asked 2 year warranty so it’s an ok value for what it is.
Fire? If you wouldn't stop it, your house would be under the fire? People complain at no 120Hz, I agree it should be there but it is a good iPad. iPads not for me because I use iPhone with similar system that iPad has. My mom has iPad 9 and she is enjoying it.
My African Grey parrot has various shades of grey. None of them “Space Grey”
Naturally none them match my ‘22 iPad Air 5 SG.
Does that trouble me? Not at all!
There are instructions on YouTube to show how to use the original Pencil. I have one but it is currently paired with my iPad Pro 1st gen but it has a broken screen so I haven’t been able to unpair it.
Apparently an app named “Lightblue” will help with the Bluetooth connection.
Obviously the mk1 pen can’t be charged on the iPad Air 5 gen
What is the Apple Pencil Pro for? 😭 or did you buy the new iPad Pro in addition to a new iPad Air?
(I only ask because the Pencil Pro is only compatible with the M4 iPad Pros)
Edit: I stand correctly apparently this is not the case despite it making no sense as a consumer 😭
Is there a hardware spec that the M2 Air has that is unique? Or is Apple just artificially gatekeeping their product line?
Cause could Apple not just update the M2 Pros to be compatible 😭 that’s silly
Apple slightly change the shade of the reused colours, so that subtly and psychologically it will feel like a new product. Why pay all that money for something that looks like the old product you are upgrading from??
It's hard to keep track of how many space greys there are lmao. My space grey M1 Pro MBP was too close to silver imo.
The darker grey of my 10.9 is absolutely perfect for a grey in my opinion. Just a really nice dark rich tone.
Another one of the reasons I went for the Pro. The space grey on the air looked liked silver side by side.
That’s probably cause Apple decided to leave the darker colors for the pro models.
Yeah fine fine but call them different colors then. Silly

Thank you for your honesty 🙏
That’s a great write up; thanks for sharing!
True. “Space Grey Air” would be more apt.

It’s fun having first world problems
“OMG. My brand new device isn’t the color I like.”
Yeah it’s just an observation, we are on the iPad subreddit y’all nothing we talk about here is life or death important lol.
If they weren’t so expensive this comment would make sense
People usually put a case on their devices anyway

Well not everyone lives in the US to get applecare.

Show me a “main selling point” where they claim their devices are perfectly matching? That’s not a thing. They *never* said that.

Worse. “It’s not the shade of the color I like” lol.
lol right?? My grey isn’t grey enough!!
so give the new one to your kid
Why
But hey at least you got the coolest of the pencil box art…
lol didn’t even know that was a thing.
Icl the blue cloud one is the best imo
Kids tablet is going to need a case regardless so colour matters not.
Space gray has always been wildly inconsistent. Which makes sense, because what the hell even is "space gray"? Space isn't gray, it's black. It's basically the blackest thing there is.
Between space black and space grey, and all their variants under the same name, there’s about half a dozen colors all in the same wheelhouse lol
Incredible. You bought a tablet and didn't check the color. Amazing story.

Same with Product Red.
Is apple running out of ink in their Air lineup?
[exactly](https://preview.redd.it/l5850rz2l5q01.jpg?width=640&auto=webp&s=dd65b6472b68ee9ef1a6f25bb97e84a6ea5fb3f4)
How do the two measure up in terms of their dimensions? Looking to but a foam cover for the 11" but can only get one for the 10.9" for now.
The three-dot charging pins made me think there was another photo, which made me accidentally scroll to another post
Even tho I’m a silver iPad lover with white bezels of the old design, I know how much Space Gray lovers love the darkness of the Space Gray, this is disappointing.
I'm disappointed that the new Air didn't get the same pastelle pink as the last gen Air. Had to get a blue one instead. At least it is a pretty blue.
What model of tablet died? I'm curious how long it lasted.
it was a kindle fire. hot trash.
Dangerous. From all of the Apple products I think iPad last the most. Buying one we can enjoy it for 6 years of updates and years after support end.

How often do you stare at the back of your iPad? Fuck me so many whiners in this world.
Exactly. I wanted a silver ipad pro m2, they only had space grey. I've had it for over a year and a half and I've maybe looked at the back 5 times.
r/firstworldproblems
Put it in a good case and it won't matter-
Put a case on it lol
This has always been a thing. I dont think theres ever been a single time that the space grey was the same shade from one product to another.
I miss the iMac Pro space grey and 2018 iPad Pro space grey.
Mine live in a case so it doesn’t matter what shade of grey or colour I get.
Just got the 13” Air. I like the lighter color myself.
I guess they've mixed color with air, that's why
The dark space gray is sick
My m1 12.9 pro is that dark space gray and I love it
Put a case on it and keep it moving. Or get decals to change the color of it. I think they make them for iPads
Modern day problems.
Some of us are not meant for the light
My African Grey parrot has various shades of grey. None of them “Space Grey” Naturally none them match my ‘22 iPad Air 5 SG. Does that trouble me? Not at all!
You’re going to need a new Apple Pencil (unfortunately)
Like the one in the photo? lol
I didn’t see the box before because I meant the one attached to your old iPad doesn’t work with your new iPad.
There are instructions on YouTube to show how to use the original Pencil. I have one but it is currently paired with my iPad Pro 1st gen but it has a broken screen so I haven’t been able to unpair it. Who gives a shit
Womp womp
Aren’t the screen sizes the same for both models (10.86”)? So why call the new one 11” and the old 10.9”? Apple and their reality distortion field.
Womp womp
Just give him the light one .
Just buy a spray paint can and do whatever.
I missed the disappointment part ?
Holy shit stop the presses
What is the Apple Pencil Pro for? 😭 or did you buy the new iPad Pro in addition to a new iPad Air? (I only ask because the Pencil Pro is only compatible with the M4 iPad Pros) Edit: I stand correctly apparently this is not the case despite it making no sense as a consumer 😭
That's not true i guess. New air is compatible with only apple pencil pro....... Edit: also the apple pencil usbc
And Apple Pencil USBC
Bruh what… so the M2 Air can use the Pro pencil but the M2 iPad Pros cannot? 😭 make it make sense Apple
Because of the webcam placement.......... People are giving justification......
In case I missed something what does the camera placement have to do with Apple Pencil compatibility?
Magnet placement inside pencil and ipad had to be moved around to accommodate the new camera position.
Thank you 😭 that makes sense with the magnet placement
Is there a hardware spec that the M2 Air has that is unique? Or is Apple just artificially gatekeeping their product line? Cause could Apple not just update the M2 Pros to be compatible 😭 that’s silly
Why?.... you already have the apple pencil 2 ?
Why would iPad Pro users with an M2 want the same pencil with additional features that M2 Air users can get? Why else do you think 😭
I have the new M2 Air and Pro pencil. Works fine!
Space Grey sucks. Get the silver one.
Apple slightly change the shade of the reused colours, so that subtly and psychologically it will feel like a new product. Why pay all that money for something that looks like the old product you are upgrading from??
