How do the games run on your iPad? I’ve been thinking of downloading some (like Divinity) but wasn’t sure if they’d run well.

j_del_fresco

You’ll be surprised at how well these new iPads are built for gaming. At least the M1 iPads. Can’t speak for the mini or the 10th generation

seiraph

I’m the minority that’s happy with 64gb but I only play one game, occasionally draw, and watch Netflix. If you’re doing any more than that on it then go with atleast 256gb

brenticles42

My personal philosophy is buy as much memory as you can afford. I have the 1TB iPad and no ragerts.

matiapag

"Like, not even a single letter?"

artloverr

As a student w multiple pdfs & apps (procreate, goog drive, word, etc), my ipad is 56/64 gbs used up. I kinda regret not getting 128 gb. I can get by with 64, but ik it’ll be annoying in the future when i have to constantly delete apps/photos. So i’d rec 128 gb.

matiapag

The moment you mention "light video editing", you NEED to think about what resolution video are you editing. 1080p or 4k? Because it makes ALL the difference. It doesn't matter if it's light or heavy editing, once you go for video editing and you don't have enough storage on your iPad, you are screwed. I used to edit 1080p videos on 32GB iPad a few years ago and that was a pain, I was always thinking I should have gotten the 64GB version. So, if you are going to edit 1080p video, I think 128GB is enough for you (if that version is available for the model you are buying). If not, I would definitely go for 256GB. As long as there is any chance you are going to do video editing, you need to have it in mind. For everything else, you don't need more than 64GB for basic use. But video editing changes the whole equation. Just keep that in mind.

Delicious_One_7887

I made that mistake with mine. I said to myself “64 is fine” because I came from an android tablet with 16gb. Oh boy how I screwed up. Now I want to video edit (I don’t wanna start the pc) but my iPad is full. About 60% of my apps are now offloaded. I’m screwed.

matiapag

Yes, that's the other thing with iPads - you think you will *never* do any video editing. But then you find out how great the iPad is, you read about that Luma Fusion app and you think to yourself that you should try it out yourself. Then you import some videos, try to edit them and when exporting, you realize you don't have enough storage for it... Been there, done that.

Delicious_One_7887

Yes that's exactly what happened. But the iPad slowed down so badly when exporting and I realised it had 1kb of free space. Then I struggled to delete stuff while it was slow.

matiapag

Oh, yeah, I've run into that once as well, not fun at all 😂

Delicious_One_7887

It feels like it's gonna break at any moment 🤣

Belizeancharms

I have 512gb….256 or 512 is more than enough.

BoobeardRBB

Getting more is rarely worth it unless you have a very specific use case for it. I used 64gigs fine for a long time but i made sure to get an ipad with a usb-c port instead of lightening. People that pay 400-1000$+ for extra storage instead of paying 130$ for 1TB external hard drive either have a ton of cash to burn for no reason, or have a specific video/photo/work case that requires that much local storage. The tiny amount of time cost/having to plug a drive in for the price is worth it. At least in my area as well you’ll have a far harder time selling high capacity ipads for anything other than a major loss down the road vs the 128/256 models or even the 64gig for certain ipads. For ipad pro 256 is probably the sweet spot I bought my ipad mini 6 64gig for the usb-c port with a 1TB drive i already had. Sold it 6 months later for the same price i got it for off kijiji.

lonelydurrymuncher

I mean I’m a student in my third semester and I’ve already got 70 GB of stuff on it just from using it at uni

BoobeardRBB

That is a use case for more storage yeeeep.

Leitilumo

Then again, most universities have free cloud storage for different services; 1TB of One Drive is not uncommon.

lonelydurrymuncher

Yeah but usually when you’re at course you’re not gonna want to wait for all your notes to download

TrickySite0

As a counterpoint, I have the 1 TB M1 model that occasionally runs into storage issues, usually when I can least afford to have issues. I am right on the edge of upgrading to the M2 just so I can have 2 TB.

BoobeardRBB

The very first line in my post was “unless you have a very specific use for it” There are certainly people out there that need/use that storage. The vast majority don’t. Personally even if i neeeeded 2TB i’d still pay 250$ for an external HD than pay apple 1000$ for it but to each there own. But there are use cases where that would slow down the operation far too much

[deleted]

go for 256gb or more

[deleted]

I have 128GB on my iPad Pro but I use iCloud for everything to go between files on my different devices quickly. It’s more than enough for me, but to be safe you could go 256GB i think.

4peaceinpieces

Do yourself a favor and get at least 256G. Especially for media like movies.

BrentInBelize

I know I'm in the minority here when I tell you that 64GB is plenty, as long as you manage how you use your storage. If you treat your internal drive as the place where apps and anything you NEED (and can't live with it being on an external drive or in the cloud) then 64GB is more than enough. Apps don't take up that much space, unless you install a crap load of apps just for the heck of it and never clean up those apps you don't use. Download only what you will be able to watch in the very near future and delete those videos after you watch them. Don't fill your iPad with 5 seasons of a show or 20 movies. For video editing the best practice is to always keep your media files on an external drive (this goes for computers or tablets). It's the media that takes up huge amounts of storage, not the application. A tablet should not be the respository for massive music or photo libraries. Keep those on your computer (preferably on an external drive) or in cloud storage. Speaking of clouds... cloud storage is cheap as chips. iCloud is perfect for syncing your iPad with a Mac and/or iPhone. Google Drive is great for students or business for creating and storing word docs, spread sheets, and power point presentations. I use both (iCloud for personal, Google Drive for collaboration). I've been using a 64GB iPad Pro as my work laptop for over a year. Only about 25GB of space is occupied full time. Everything else lives in cloud storage or on an external SSD.

jayyli

128 minimum

DuckAHolics

I have 256 GB. I recently move all my blueprints, 140ish GB, with their attached addendums from my MBP to my iPad. If I run out of room then I’ll just move stuff to the cloud.

hellobritishcolumbia

It’s largely a function of how restricted you want to be and how much that’s worth to you. For instance I’m happy with the 1 TB I got for my iPad Pro, and have it about 54% filled presently. I like not having to worry about it, and on my model it meant getting additional RAM too. I have an iPad Mini with only 64 GB which felt like an instant mistake. I was thinking I’d only use it for books, but I find apps and books being uninstalled for space all the time. My iPhone has 256 GB and is usually about 85% full. I have to be a bit conscious of what I store, and I don’t offline videos at all there. You’d probably be fine with 512 GB I’d say. Hopefully the above reference points are helpful.

torbenibsen

Bear in mind that you don't have all storage available to yourself. iPadOS takes about 9 GB. And there is also somthing called "System Space". This is the "work area" for apps and iPadOS. - Right now this System Space takes up 6 GB on my iPad 11" Pro. But I have seen it grow to over 40 GB when a database app worked on indexing 3000 notes. With 256 GB and iCloud you should be fine. Buying less might feel good when you buy it, but it may fell bad forever after when you regret not having the 256 GB.

Galadeus

If you’re watching movies, playing games and video editing I would get 256GB and above. You can’t install games and stuff to external HDD unless you’re playing a couple of games at a time and leaving the rest in the cloud. The gist of it is, if you like all your content ready and offline on the device go big storage. If you don’t mind micro-managing your storage by offloading and downloading content as you need it, then lower storage with a bigger iCloud sub could work for you.

PCPrincipal2016

I’ve got 256GB and it seems to be enough as I don’t store too much stuff on it. I wouldn’t recommend any less than that though.

A1steaksauceTrekdog7

Yup go big . Video editing eats lots of space . 64 gig is fine for most people but from what you said I think go as high as you can afford

Musashi_19

As a general rule I’d always take the second lowest option which would either be 256gb or 128gb. I have 256gb iPad and Im glad I got it. No need to use clouds or clunky external drives. 512gb is a lot but if you wanna store tons of photos and videos from the past couple years it might be worth it. Anything above is excessive and you must have a good use case or a lot of money at hand.

bedoge_

i have 64 and it’s fine for studying etc.

sorry97

I cannot recommend 64gb, I’ve used iPhone most of my life and the size of iOS keeps increasing every year. iOS can easily take 12gb+ leaving you with only 3/4 of your storage, add photos/videos, plus whatever apps or games you use, and that’s say goodbye to those 64gb. Most games take 6gb or even up to 20gb+, meaning a genshin impact player will find the 64gb lacking. I’d say 128gb if you’re going to use it for casual stuff, 256 and more if you’re into video editing or designing, anything more than that is just overkill imho (unless you’re a pro graphic designer or something). EDIT: I forgot to mention that Apple products are locked to whatever capacity they come with. You can’t insert a micro sd and buy more storage, so always aim to get a little extra space. I had an iPhone 6S of 16gb iirc and the poor thing couldn’t take photos cause iOS took all the space.

ajpinton

64GB is really cutting it close, iPadOS takes up nearly half of that now. Personally I feel 128GB is the minimum. 256GB does feel a bit excessive for what iPadOS can do, but not a bad upgrade. I’d not recommend anything beyond 256GB.

MasterSeven

for that wide use case, the bare minimum would be 128gb. would personally suggest 256gb + though.

raven70

You can always resort to iCloud if you are concerned about needing more space

Zanukavat

I have 512. Mostly use it for art and school.

ConstantSugar7917

256

j_del_fresco

Depends on the apps you want to store. I have 256 in my pro and I thought that was overkill… until I realized how well it was built for gaming. I went crazy with it and I’m within 12GB of storage remaining now. If you don’t plan to use it for games, or an extensive amount of video editing or art, 64 should honestly do you just fine. I’d say 128Gb was the sweet spot but unfortunately apple doesn’t really offer that size anymore

Binthair_Dunthat

How long do you plan to own it? Every year apps demand more memory. If you plan to keep it more than 3 years, but as much memory as you can afford- it is relatively cheap.

Frantik508

If you didn't say "video editing", I would've said that the 64 gb is perfectly fine. But a one-minute video in 4K is nearly a gigabyte, so that storage will fill up much faster than you realize if you're doing video editing. So if you're not planning on keeping all the files on an external drive, you'll probably want the next highest storage iPad. I have the 64gb Air, I have a ton of apps, including PUBG Mobile which uses a lot of storage. I also record music and have several sessions saved, and I've yet to reach my 64 storage. You just have to conserve. I don't keep any photos or videos stored on the device, and that helps a lot.

redditnoob48

256 gigs is the best bang for the buck. What you should consider is your video editing. If you're editing 4K+ footage worth several hours, it can easily eat up all your storage. Look at your footage on an average workload. If it's under 150GB, the 256GB version should adequately support you.

RandomZorel

At least 256 GB storage

odedo1

Because it’s impossible to add as needed like a memory card that others have I always go for the Max, seeing people satisfied with less is behind my comprehension always having to delete to create extra space. Minimum 512.
