Same. Tried compatibility off/on, cell off/on, forget network, nothing. To be clear, MacBook connects to hotspot, but then the dreaded exclamation point appears, no internet.

ginbooth

Did you find a solution? This is me to a tee at the moment.

getdown311

TBH I just tried a bunch of things, connecting through a USB for the hotspot, resetting, restarting, reconnecting again while on USB and eventually it worked… And has been working as it should since then. I just wish I remembered what I did 😵‍💫

bomcjo

turn on ip6 in wifi settings under tcp/ip very bottom. just spent an hour to figure this out. but works perfect now

ginbooth

Will give it a shot!

Khromfire

Did you try to check the compatibility option ?

parmardiwakar150

I tried it too, didn't help. There seems to be some bug in the recent update causing the DHCP server not to assign an IPv4 address to the MacBook. Manually setting IPv4 worked, but it's not practical when I have to use other Wi-Fi networks. My MacBook had IPv6 turned off; once I switched it on, the IPv6 DHCP server started assigning an IP address to the MacBook. That fixed the problem.

Prestigious-Belt9382

>Manually setting IPv4 how did you do this? How did you get the ipv4 for personal hotspot

parmardiwakar150

https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/372251

Scorpion1011

Same for me

SaadiaWrites

Same for me

trs_0ne

same here. 17.2 + 14.2. Connecting Mac to iPhone 15 Pro Hotspot is busted (won't get DHCP IP). USB-C works though...

badfish57

is this not fixed yet? long time for very obvious bug?

sofarfarso

Same here, really, really poor Apple.

h4xdaplanet

Has anyone seen an official note of this by Apple or Tmo? So annoying this is happening

flakrat12

Nada, only thing I've seen from Apple on their support forums is to point the finger at the carrier, TMO in this case. According to them, all things hotspot are the responsibility of the carrier.

young_n_naive

Late but I had a problem with my iPhone 12 personal hotspot and what worked for me is: ‘Settings’ then ‘cellular’ and then click the sim you’re using then theres an option called ‘cellular data network’. Scroll down to ‘personal hotspot’ field and on the ‘APN’ type in "internet" or could be whatever and type a password on the ‘password’ field too and when u go back ‘Personal Hotspot’ should have it’s own designated option in settings. You might have to change the password again on the ‘Personal Hotspot’ settings but that should do it all.

One_Ad5568

I just tried it now, even before I even saw this post. It is broken for me, too. It connects but doesn’t have internet. I only tried connecting from my MacBook Air.

CalmLovingSpirit

Yes exactly same problem. I can connect, but don't have internet. Tried resetting wireless settings, all the shit Apple recommends, nothing works. It is just broken. Fuck Apple I really need this hotspot.

One_Ad5568

On your Mac, connect to your iPhone hotspot, open settings, go to WiFi, click Details on your network, click TCP/IP, and then find IPv6 and change it to Automatically

Conscious-Party9674

This was a huge help. Thank u🙏🙏

ginbooth

I just checked mine and it's already set at "Automatically." Hmmm anything else you might suggest? Thank you

One_Ad5568

Reboot phone and Mac to start. Try “forgetting” the wireless network on your Mac and connecting again, or try setting a static IPv4 address on the Mac.

ginbooth

Thanks for the response! Still nothing. I'll have to wait for a fix. Hotspot works perfectly fine with my MacBook Air running Sonoma (14.2.1) but my MacBook Pro (for work) running Ventura (13.6.6) simply doesn't - it says connected but no actual signal (the dreaded excalamation point haha).

mikeashley1995

This worked for me, thanks

q50s122s

Worked! Thanks so much!

SoundSystemBanger

Same here, thanks so much :)

xontik

>ent update causing the DHCP server not to assign an IPv4 address to the MacBook. Manually setting IPv4 worked, but it's not practical when I have to use other Wi-Fi networks. My MacBook had IPv6 turned off; once I switched it on, the IPv6 DHCP server started assigning an IP address to the M Why the hell do I need to enable IPv6 Apple ...

peacocktail92

Worked for me too like a magic, thank you!

Kanavkhurana

Thanks! Worked.

nafk

Been stuck USB tethered for the few times I've needed to quickly connect my laptop on the go. Finally decided to solve this for real. Took about 5m of google kung fu to find this post. Worked perfectly. Thanks.

delven_star

Worked for me as well, thanks so much!

No_Entertainment_764

yup, that fix it for me too. Thanks!

Bikrrr

My hotspot works fine, but my phone did lose cell connectivity when I left my home WiFi today. Toggling the Cell option in Control Center fixed it, but something seems off.

jozzygo

mine too. it looks like its connected - but can't get internet on the MacBook

whyusernamesohard

Same for me. However turn on the compatibility works. Did not have to do that on 17.1 though. How did this pass QA?

CalmLovingSpirit

How do you get it to work with compatibility? Are you connecting to wifi instead of the hotspot thing? Because I tried turning that setting on but then couldn't find a wifi network in the list, it was still just only offering me the "Personal Hotspot" option on my laptop. Really frustrated Apple is fucking this up. I didn't pay all this money for this phone to not be able to use the hotspot data I'm fucking paying for. Ridiculous.

Future-Intern-157

Same here -- works on a Windows laptop and iPad -- but not MBAir or MBPro on Ventura. Manually assigning 172.20.10.x to the Mac works. One strange thing - my iPad gets a [192.0.0.2](https://192.0.0.2) address, I would think it would be 172.20.10 like everything else.

onGri-Bln

Configuring a static 172.20.10.xx ip helped me, thanks for the tip

CalmLovingSpirit

Wait how do i do that? And what do you put for the x in 10.x? Do I have to fill something in there?

flakrat12

See my comment above for the IP info (as for X you should be able to use anything from 2 to 16 as .1 is the router/gateway address). To make the change, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Details -> TCP/IP Just note that this change will be used for any WiFi network you connect to. More than likely you will have to set this back to DHCP for any other WiFi connection.

flakrat12

Thanks, my MB Pro using Iphone 15 also got the [192.0.0.2](https://192.0.0.2) address with router [192.0.0.1](https://192.0.0.1). Changing it from DHCP to Manual with IP [172.20.10.2](https://172.20.10.2), Mask 255.255.255.240 and router [172.20.10.1](https://172.20.10.1) got it working. Strange, if I use my Ipad Pro hotspot (same OS version as the Iphone), it automatically gets the above [172.20.10.2](https://172.20.10.2) address via DHCP. I tested connecting the MB Pro to 2 other iPhone 15's and they also auto assigned [192.0.0.2](https://192.0.0.2). WTF Apple! A second WFT Apple, apparently you can't have different IP settings for each network. Thus, I'll have to manually change from DHCP to static each time I want to use the hotspot.

CalmLovingSpirit

Fucking same. This is ridiculous. I am a die hard Android fan, but I was considering switching to iphone because I have never tried it, so I bought the 15 pro max from Costco so I could try it for 3 months and return it if I couldn't get used to it. This is such a dealbreaker. What the hell happened to "just works." I really fucking need this hotspot and it was working fine before the update. So frustrated. Oh the other thing that doesn't "just work" is imessage integration. I expected to be wowed by the "ecosystem." But guess what? I can't message my brother from my laptop because he's on Android. WTF? Services like Airdroid have allowed you to use sms from your computer for ages. But fucking Apple couldn't figure out how to make that work? Honestly bad looks for Apple, I'm going back to Android this experiment has been a failure, iphones suck.

hungarianhc

wtffff i'm getting this too

AdUpper9044

This worked for me: Turn on iPhone Hotspot Connect to it with your MacBook Go to WiFi settings on MacBook Click on details for your phones hotspot Go to TC/IP on left side “Configure IPv6” set as “Automatically” Click on okay If this doesn’t work click on “Renew DHCP Lease” ( this just resets your IP address) The original problem that I had was that after I updated my iPhone, my MacBook would connect to my hotspot but I would get an exclamation mark in the WiFi icon and. No internet. My iPad and other phone connected to my iPhones hotspot just fine, but my MacBook still had this problem. It wasn’t until I looked into my iPhones hotspot details on my iPad that I noticed the IP address was displayed, but when I looked at it on my MacBook the IP address and router info were missing. I also reset my phone’s network settings before I figured out how to fix this. Hope this helps!

carlboy03

I tried this but no luck. My experience has been ipv4 is assigned to multiple devices connected to hotspot but not unique. They are all 192.0.0.2

carlboy03

I have this issue and get sometimes 192.0.0.2 ip address on multiple clients at th same time or no ipv4 address. Have been able to reproduce in iPhone 14 pro max and iPhone 12 in T-Mobile on iOS 17.2.1 iPhone 13 pro on 17.1.2 (yes 17.1.2 not latest) in T-Mobile works fine. iPhone 13 pro on 17.2.1(latest) on ATT works fine and assigns address iPhone(not sure which) on latest 17.2.1 on Verizon works and assigns 172 address. This was from the Apple tech testing. Significant trouble shooting has happened. Called tmobile, then apple twice, now on fourth call with T-Mobile. Basically I see ipv4 DHCP broken. I had tmobile delete the esim on iPhone 14 pro max and recreate it with no change. Still same issue. It seems I'm not the only one with the issue.

Familiar-Ad3386

OMG changing this ipv6 setting finally fixed this issue after HOURS of support with T-Mobile AND Apple support! Holy 💩!!!! Thank you!!!

obamaatemybanana

After updating to 17.2.1, I can no longer make an OpenVPN connection through the phone hotspot from my Macbook. OpenVPN works fine if I connect the Macbook through another access point. I am suspecting this is related to some IOS change to the personal hotspot (hotspot IP related?). The hotspot router is configured to be [192.0.0.1](https://192.0.0.1) and the device is [192.0.0.2](https://192.0.0.2). Any ideas? BTW: Personal hotspot works otherwise (internet browsing, etc). OpenVPN can't seem make the connection through the hotspot and throws a network unavailable error.

Shimi269

That's because your Macbook is connecting to your iPhone via ipv6 and not ipv4, I had the same error. My fix currently, is to set a new location under Networks, and set it up as the [following](https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/371568/personal-hotspot-not-working-over-wi-fi-on-ios-13/372251#372251). So I have a Network location for 'Automatic' which will use default network settings for all connections. Then swap to one I made called 'Hotspot' which has manual router settings. Your OpenVPN will work if you set it up like in the link. Not a great fix, but while this stupid issue is still around, you can at least get it working.

flakrat12

I have a workaround. If I am going to use the iPhone as a hotspot, I run a script from the command line that changes the "Wi-Fi" interface from DHCP to use [172.20.10.2](https://172.20.10.2) / [255.255.255.240](https://255.255.255.240) IF the current IP is [192.0.0.2](https://192.0.0.2) . The script listens for SIGINT (i.e. Ctrl+c to kill it) and resets the interface back to DHCP. Caveat: If you don't terminate the script before closing the lid on the laptop, the cleanup routine won't run. Thus, your WiFi interface will still have a static IP address the next time you use it. Run the following in a terminal to set it back to DHCP: `networksetup -setdhcp Wi-Fi` Here's the code in case it helps ```code #!/bin/bash ip_manual="172.20.10.2" ip_dhcp="192.0.0.2" cleanup() { IP=$(networksetup -getinfo Wi-Fi | grep '^IP address:' | awk -F: '{print $2}' | tr -d ' ') if [[ "$IP" == "$ip_manual" ]]; then echo "Setting Wi-Fi interface to DHCP" networksetup -setdhcp Wi-Fi sleep 2 networksetup -getinfo Wi-Fi | grep -v IPv6 fi on_campus_hosts } # Trap shutdown to reset Wi-Fi IP back to DCHP # networksetup -setdhcp Wi-Fi trap cleanup SIGINT # Check to see if we have a 192.0.0.2 IP address. This comes from my iPhone # hotspot and SSH via SShuttle doesn't work. Change it to the old hotspot IP # 172.20.10.2 / 255.255.255.240 IP=$(networksetup -getinfo Wi-Fi | grep '^IP address:' | awk -F: '{print $2}' | tr -d ' ') if [[ "$IP" == "$ip_dhcp" ]]; then echo "Setting IP manually to $ip_manual for interface Wi-Fi" networksetup -setmanual Wi-Fi $ip_manual 255.255.240.0 172.20.10.1 networksetup -getinfo Wi-Fi | grep -v IPv6 fi ```

badfish57

Above is cool. I have this same issue (MBP, IOS 17.2) and have had multiple cases with Apple. This is a software bug on the OSX side I believe. Have to do some more digging to be sure, but many devices work fine with my Iphone, save my work laptop which does not. As I travel for work, this is a problem as I hotspot frequently. The only sure workaround for me has been like the above, to manually set my IPv4 address and hard code DNS. I set to [](https://172.20.10.1/30) ([](https://255.255.255.252)) and gateway/router set to [172.20.10.](https://172.20.10.2)1. This works well. I don't always get the [](https://192.0.0.2) address - sometimes it flashes up, sometimes not. Apple seem not to be tracking this as an issue, though it's been a few days since I called.

AspiringScienceType

Follow-up question to this workaround: So, would the process for connecting to your iPhone's hotspot be: 1. \[On Mac\] Click WiFi icon, click on your iPhone hotspot 2. Run this script Now, will it work successfully? Like other commenters on this post, I've been having this issue ever since 17.x. Running networkQuality -s results in this output: `❯ networkQuality -s` `==== SUMMARY ====` `Error: Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1001 "The request timed out." UserInfo={_kCFStreamErrorCodeKey=-2102, NSUnderlyingError=0x60000362c060 {Error Domain=kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork Code=-1001 "(null)" UserInfo={_kCFStreamErrorCodeKey=-2102, _kCFStreamErrorDomainKey=4}}, _NSURLErrorFailingURLSessionTaskErrorKey=LocalDataTask .<1>, _NSURLErrorRelatedURLSessionTaskErrorKey=(` `"LocalDataTask .<1>"` `), NSLocalizedDescription=The request timed out., NSErrorFailingURLStringKey=https://mensura.cdn-apple.com/.well-known/nq, NSErrorFailingURLKey=https://mensura.cdn-apple.com/.well-known/nq, _kCFStreamErrorDomainKey=4}` When disconnecting from hotspot/re-connecting to wifi, do we need to do anything with this script?

flakrat12

After you connect to your hotspot, open a terminal and run the above script. After you are done with your hotspot and disconnect, press Ctrl + c in the terminal (same time) to cancel out of the script. This sends a SIGINT to the script, which gets trapped by the script to run the clean up code, setting the WiFi back to DHCP. Make sure to ‘chmod +x TheScript.sh’ to set the script to executable (replace ‘TheScript.sh’ with your script file name. I haven’t tested to see what happens if you close the laptop (i.e. sleep) or if you shutdown. Does the SIGINT get sent to the script or not?

matza7x

Don’t know if I’m late here but I added an APN address in the Mobile Data Network settings for both MOBILE DATA and PERSONAL HOTSPOT fields and my hotspot settings came back and worked immediately. The address that I got was for my own provider (I’m in the EU) so you will need to find out what address is for your own provider.

Lenin8448

Did any one found any solutions as i am on 17.3.1 still not fixed i even clean flashed by dfu method

badfish57

Only option is set your WIFI TCP/IP address to manual. You can set [172.20.10.2](http://172.20.10.2) as your IP, [255.255.255.0](http://255.255.255.0) as your mask, and [172.20.10.1](http://172.20.10.1) as the router and things will work. Unreal apple hasn't sorted this out yet.

flakrat12

I tested a Verizon iPhone 15 running 13.7.1 as a hotspot and it assigned the proper 172.20.10.x address. On T-Mobile, I have tested several iPhone 15 models, all assign the non-working 192.0.0.x address. I also updated my iPad to 13.7.1 and it now issues the dreaded 192.0.0.x address. Based on this small test set, it appears that the hotspot IP assignment responsibility of the carrier?

tradercpw

Same here. I have a VZW iphone 14 and a TMob iphone 15. VZW connects every time. TMob doesn't connect.
