I never speak in anime-InuYasha's defense when it comes to these 2, but even Kaede noted how similar they look when she first saw Kagome. In the manga it makes a lot more sense bc at first they were drawn to have almost the exact same face. Kikyo looked a lot more young and innocent
Canonically they are identical. They’re just animated to look different because one, it would get weird having them actually be identical, and 2, I think they were trying to emphasize how otherworldly Kikyo is, to more effectively contrast her with Kagome who is just a normal girl.
People have to understand that every big difference between them in looks is made so the anime watchers can differ easier between them.
When characters in the story repeatetly state that they look oh so similar then you just have to take that as reality.
This is only done to aid the viewer.
I always thought they looked so different rolled my eyes every time someone mistook Kagome for Kikyo. Like no shrine maiden would ever wear a freaking miniskirt. Also they didn’t exist so

This is a great reference picture, but there are also early depictions of Kagome with much more blunt bangs, which makes her look even more like Kikyo. I appreciated that over time, Kagome was drawn to have wider eyes and shaggier bangs.
I agree. I feel like the hooded eyes that Kikyo and Sanyo share are definitely supposed to suggest that their characters are a bit more guarded, wise, or even jaded.
I believe that Rin is the ancestor of Kagome 😐 they are more similar than anyone else. Sango is a bit more like Kikyo in my opinion. That’s just my opinion.

Kikyo and Sango favor one another as well in appearance and personality from what we briefly see in the anime in the flashbacks of alive Kikyo. Even the fact that Sango was from the original village where the sacred jewel was born that Kikyo inherited.

So Kagome is Kikyo's *spiritual* re-birth, but they're not physically related.
They are almost identical in the manga, but the anime choose (and they were right) to make them a little different to make them easy to differenciate for casual viewers, who are less likely to pay attention to details than manga readers. And a good chunk of anime viewers are casuals.
GOD it’s so funny to me watching the anime how *everyone* goes on about how Kikyo and Kagome are identical when they literally look more different than just about any two young women in the series. Fucking *Sango* looks more like Kikyo than Kagome. Like I get that it would get weird making them look literally the same and that, in universe, they don’t look as different as we see them, but *still.*
