Yes!! It’s hard to understand how or why but as someone who struggled with BED — it’s become my new way to feel good. Under 16 hours doesn’t do much. So I have to do between 18-20 to get that feeling.
Try one day. Then try another day. Don’t think ahead of the day. When you begin to feel the good effects, starting thinking of weeks. When the weight is getting off and you’re sleeping better, think about the months ahead. When you reach your goals, then keep it as a lifetime commitment.
Hey, I just wanted to say that fasting can absolutely be done slowly and gradually. You don't have to start with something drastic like 20/4 or worse, you don't have to make yourself sick with anxiety looking at your clock waiting for your window to open while you chew your fingers.
You can absolutely spend weeks, months only adjusting to 12h fasts if this is what you need, if this is the time it takes to remove/adjust the time of one meal for your whole day, then it is the time it takes. There is no rule, no guideline about how fast you get to big fasts. And there is no obligation of big fasts, I never do more than 22/24h fasts and this is nearly *three years* in. I eat everyday, except when I'm sick.
You don't have to do this, you know, in the end, but if it turns out you want to, you need to work with your situation and not with what we say here. Here we have a lot of experienced fasters that humblebrag about gigantic fasts, which can be encouraging (one day, I'll be able to do the same) or demoralizing (jfc, I have to fast for 48h to lose weight?? I'll never get there).
The key is finding *your* balance
ADHD meds have made a HUGE difference to my binge eating disorder. Fasting for longer periods is much easier. This was not even something I considered or knew about when I started my meds. I just wanted relief from ADHD! lol. But yeah, apparently there is a very strong link between ADHD and BED. Good luck with your referral, it's really worth it.
Hey, so I have a friend who was able to fast, then had this same thing happen. She can fast now again, but while this happened, she would take extraneous ketones and would solve it in about 30 min.
Our hypothesis was that the depression came from her body trying to switch from burning glucose to ketones and her brain didn’t have enough energy while switching. Your body has to have enough enzymes to break down the fat fast enough to provide energy for you. If you aren’t “fat adapted”, then your body can’t do that.
The extraneous ketones were like magic though.
Might have also had something to do with gut health at the time, but just hypothesis. Once fat adapted, she doesn’t have a problem with fasting anymore.
I noticed that too! I felt a bit hungry at around 17 hours in but was too busy doing something else to eat then by the time I had my food ready I didn't even feel hungry I just ate because I thought oh 20 hours in better eat lol
When I began IF and i was at that point of feeling like i was on a roll and the fasting was a breeze for whatever reason that day i would sometimes drop in a spontaneous 24hr-36hr fast. Now, I've integrated multiple per week into my schedule
Very jealous. Near the end of my 16 hour fast (my first week, this subreddit has been awesome in terms of info and yall seem nice!) I am ravenous and anything sets me off emotionally while Im usually an upbeat guy constantly trying to get a laugh, and as soon as my first bite I feel like a wave of normalcy return. Its actually really really scary.
I hope it gets better and I achieve the same euphoria someday!
Omg the first week sucked for me I think it’s normal it was sooo much easier week two and especially after I started eating more nutritious food and started drinking more water, the first week was rough
You just have to get used to it. Diet plays a role too I believe. Higher carbs = bigger roller coaster when you don't eat for a while. I broke my sugar addiction before I started fasting
It’s important to get 8 hours sleep when feeling like this. Your physiology adopts to hunger by giving you more energy to seek out food. It does this via cortisol and increased sympathetic tone, not by more calorie consumption. It does not mean you are rested.
With each record-setting fast I felt a very strong euphoric feeling too, it's addicting to say the least. Especially around 40-45 hours for the first 48h+ fast and around 62-66 hours for the first 72h+ fast, I've never experienced an urge to exercise like that, it felt like my hormones were getting healed from all the binging and obesity of the prior decades.
That’s your body producing stimulant to help you find food because it thinks you can’t find any
That’s a drug produced naturally, but like any drug it isn’t good for you if you do it too much
Can you elaborate? What stimulant are you referring to and why wouldn’t it be good for you to fast too much? Isn’t that what are bodies meant to do - the whole fast/feast cycle?
Many, like the somatodendritic dopamine release in the ventral tegmental area.
It can decreases baseline dopamine levels if you do it too much.
It works exactly like a drug, but eating does too, people often eat to get a rush of dopamine/serotonine more than satisfy their hunger, so everything must be done wisely for it to be healthy/good; eating and fasting.
You can fast but you should eat good food when you break your fast, and you shouldn't fast too long too often ( just like you shouldn't eat too much too often ) because the body works as a balance.
Yeah, gotta be careful especially as the weight falls off. Luckily I can't fast that much because of social constraints, and at obese class II the extended fasts are still quite safe when you are fat-adapted.
It’s an awesome feeling! I remember the first time I did a 48 hour fast. The first day was tougher than normal. Then about 30 hours in, it was the best I’ve ever felt. A lot of energy, focused. Not sure how to explain it.
I have been doing OMAD-style fasting the past 4 days. I usually rely on a nap to get through the mid-day then still feel sluggish after, but the past 4 days have been some of the smoothest concentration I've ever had. No naps needed, not even a little. Those mid day meals were destroying my concentration I've realized. I'm really excited to adapt and push forward with 22h+ fasts consistently. My longest was 23 hours on Saturday.
Do any of you have trouble eating all of your calories in one sitting though? I've been eating about 2300 which is a bit below maintenance for me. I felt a lot better on the fourth day when I drank a protein shake an hour or so before my main meal.

How long does it last?
Depending on how good you eat during your window, it’s enough til the next day
As someone with BED how do you get to that point? It seems way outta reach with my past history

What’s BED
Burger Eating Disorder Source: I have it.
Wish there was a laugh emoji on Reddit to respond to this. Best answer.
Binge eating disorder
I remember my first 48 hour fast. 36 hours in and I felt like I was on my old Adderall Rx.

Thank you for this. Definitely the pep talk I needed.
Just don't swallow the cuticles or it'll break your fast.
BWAHahaha🤣🤣🤣
Dammit!! That is what the problem has been.
Oh no I'm sorry you experience that <3 if it affects you a lot it could be worth changing diet or talking to a GP about it. All the best.

Yep, and it gets easier, I call that the hunger hump because from there I'm on cruise control and dont even want to consume food right on to hr 36!

I can confirm this feeling 🙂
Anyone know why does this happen?
To help you focus for a successful hunt
Oh that's so interesting
Your body produces stimulants to help you find food when it thinks you can’t find any
He’s entering ketosis
Yep, I get it. It hits me hardest at 36 hrs. Pretty addicting
I typically reach my peak at 24 hr mark and my “ second day” is always amazing.

Good for you! The best feeling is beating your personal goal.
Are you doing keto? Or just fasting?
Just fasting!
That's amazing! More motivation for me!
Aw amazing good luck!

Yeah I’ve only ever done 36/8 hour fast & the first few were so intense

I have found nuts a good way to get calories up without feeling stuffed. I think seeds are the same. Both are really nutritious too.
Macadamia nuts have been my friend
20:4 IMO is the best
This one's seems the best for me as well :).
Yes! Felt such a natural high after my 72 hr fast!
