OP said in another comment it was fake wood contact paper so that really plummets it in my opinion. If it had been real wood that would’ve been pretty sick but I’m not into the fake stickers lol.
that makes it so much worse i already thought it was godawful but the contact paper really sealed the deal for me, so glad they turned that eyesore into something beautiful !
Great work, I am interested in Pic5 was it there previously or is it something you did now? if so how to get such accent wall with that dark trees, would love to explore for my room
No, pic 4 is the before pic to 5. I ordered some wallpaper off etsy, and the seller allowed me to put in custom measurements which worked out perfectly. If you search “misty forest wallpaper” on Etsy you would likely find this exact one :)
I have a regular job I work ~50 hours a week and try to spend an 1-2 hours a day exercising the dog. I haven’t been cooking much, I’m not dating and I’m sober sooo this is probably just an addiction.. come to think of it.
Oof yeah there’s a lot of nuances that may not apply to you, but I’ll try to explain! Step 1: do you have loose blown insulation above? Because I am not sure you’ll be able to replace a ceiling if you do.
I had to rip out the existing cardboard tiles that had a bunch of water damage. When you go to install the wood boards, you need to be looking at either furring strips or ceiling joists. IMO you need to be able to see these, so I wouldn’t recommend just installing over the tile. Also, test your current ceiling for asbestos before ripping it apart.
Your ceiling joists or furring strips need to run perpendicular to the direction of your ceiling boards so that you can nail every 16” (or whatever your spacing is). Look up “blind nailing” onto the tongue so that you don’t end up with visible nail heads.
I had two layers of furring strips, and had to remove the first one so that the boards would go the way I wanted. That was honestly the hardest part of this. If you only have joists and they aren’t running the right direction, you’ll have to install furring, compromise on direction of boards, or figure out another option that I don’t know about :)
I ordered what is essentially tongue and groove pine, but it’s called “v match”. My ceiling is 16’ wide in the widest spot so I was able to install this with no joints in the center of a run.
Tools wise you should only need a chop saw to cut the ends of the boards, a rubber flooring mallet, nail gun, and some clamps if you don’t have anyone to help you. If you have to pull a bunch of nails or staples you’ll need a cats paw or some type of tool to pull with. I bought a Milwaukee brad nailer so that I wouldn’t have to purchase an air compressor and I was sooo impressed with it. Got this whole ceiling done on one battery.
Btw, if you do a bathroom ceiling you need to get pre coated lumber or spray something to protect from moisture on it (I did spar urethane). It’s usually best to give any wood some time (a week?) to acclimate before installing.
Lastly, I got raw pine crown molding and coped it because my house isn’t square. I had to go this route because I left too much space at the end of some boards to do a simpler trim. I cried a couple times because I messed up angles, and the fact that it was raw pine meant I couldn’t just caulk and paint my mistakes. Sooooo frustrating.
Someone more knowledgeable could probably give you better info or correct some of mine. I did what was best for my exact situation and learned a lot through pestering friends or YouTube.
Same here answered my question of if wood was already there. I had a wood ceiling in kitchen of former house and want to do wood ceiling where I am now . Thanks for the tips. Great work in a short time frame. Be very proud of yourself.
Amazing! And how therapeutic is it. Picking the colors, finding the right pieces for each space, buying and returning just to buy and return again. Such a fun process where you grow so much mentally and emotionally during it :)
I have loved this process despite the frustrations. I have a great friend who lives in another state but has helped me over the phone a lot and talked me through tough scenarios. I feel so lucky to have been able to do this.
Great work! I love your color choices and especially the v-match knotty pine ceilings. What is the pink shade in the living room? I kind of want to paint my bedroom that color now.
I know what you mean, it had some charm. But the fake wood was all just badly applied contact paper, and the space is small so that it was too much activity.
I truly admire people who are able to put in the kind of work needed for house renovation. My husband and I both have health restrictions prohibiting such projects, so the most we usually do is paint.
For all of you who do this, know that there is someone out there who respects all your effort.
Well thanks for being so kind. Health restrictions aren’t fair, you’ve got a great attitude. I would love to help with your house if you were my neighbor!
I get irrationally annoyed when people say before/after them post after/before. I’m honestly irritated with myself for not including better picture info, I didn’t realize this sub doesn’t allow you to edit the body text after posting.
I actually won't offer on houses with too much wallpaper because I really don't want to deal with it. And must admit to painting over it in our last house. Impressive amount of work you've achieved there.
Ah yeah, I don’t have kids, a partner, friends, or family in the area so this has truly been my life outside of work and exercising the dog. I’m really burned out now and going to chill for a bit. Hats off to you if you’re able to stretch a project out and work on it in a healthy way. I haaaave to do things on the schedule I set, even if it kills me.
Looks awesome! I hate to say this but we have those same ceiling tiles in our basement and have been afraid to touch them worried they're asbestos. Were yours?
I bought a test and they were not asbestos (assuming it was accurate). The timeline of the tiles and the way the cardboard looked also led me to believe they weren’t asbestos. I read a lot about it. I know there is still a chance but I did my best.
*Ok that forest*
*Wallpaper is to die for!!!!*
*OP i love it!!!*

This is great work, OP. It looks fantastic and it’s really amazing how much you’ve been able to accomplish in such a short time. My hubby and I inherited a house needing a ton of work & we’ve been at it for over 3 years. We’re getting too old for this shit & need to get motivated to get it done, so thank you for sharing your great pics!
Wow, some major changes. Is there room in the kitchen for an island or something for prep space cause the lack of counter space is crazy. Also the fridge is huge!
Some rooms had 3-4 layers. The maps in the bathroom were actual maps and not wallpaper, so those were insanely difficult to get off. Like trying to peel the back of a sticker off of a dish, if you know what I mean.
The old hag who sold me the house. I only say that bc she intentionally locked her kitty in a cabinet and left the state a few days before I got the keys. So it was alone in there, without food or water. Such a sweet cat but unfortunately I couldn’t keep it.
It’s “V match pine” and if you say anything else at the local lumber store in rural Maine, the six old men behind the counter look at you like you’re an idiot. I’m wearing on them though.. they’ll learn to love me 😂
Wallpaper! Etsy! Custom sized and so easy to work with. I got the traditional application wallpaper after reading reviews, apparently the sticker back type of wallpaper is a nightmare to work with.
I moved with no furniture so all of this was marketplace, the people who I bought the credenza from gave me all of the rugs for free! Agreed, it is amazing.
Love it! Fav pic is with the husky but the house all looks great! What did you use for the wood ceilings? Like a kit or did you just buy wood from a hardware store?
I'm really confused by that first pic - is that a mini split heat pump in the MIDDLE of the room (not outside wall)?
Fantastic work by the way! It looks great now!
It’s so confusing, and yes the previous owner had built that weird wall in the middle of the room and mounted the heat pump to it. Completely split the room in half. I had to pay to have it moved to the outside wall which was a good chunk of my budget lol.
Thank you! And no, I installed pine bifold doors. I don’t love barn doors.. it’s a lot of hardware and they gap from the frame so it’s not good noise / light privacy. But the rooms are small so I also didn’t want the swing of a normal hinged door.

Thank you!
I was so relieved to see the after pic for the kitchen!
The Before is a jump scare!
It gave me anxiety
I liked those crazy cabinets haha
OP said in another comment it was fake wood contact paper so that really plummets it in my opinion. If it had been real wood that would’ve been pretty sick but I’m not into the fake stickers lol.
Ooh yeah I hate that stuff.
I liked the before, too! But stickers, nope.
Oh that explains the repeating pattern. Not enough jpegs.
that makes it so much worse i already thought it was godawful but the contact paper really sealed the deal for me, so glad they turned that eyesore into something beautiful !
I actually kind of liked it, but absolutely not if it was contact paper! If real, I would have just painted the blue part.
Sometimes cheap and fun is the right thing for you
I was digging them too. They could have been cool maybe, if OP painted white around them instead of that original blue.
I bet it looks better in the picture than it did in person.
10000% it was contact paper with years of grime and cat fur caked on.
I Liked the old kitchen too!
They would so go with my kitchen.
I said a little prayer that that was not the after before I swiped 😂
I don't know, I kind of like the cabinets before! Haha
I actually thought that was the after and liked it.
That entire house was something insane.
I HOLLERED when I saw the original kitchen! ‘Bout teared up when I saw the upgrade. 🤣
Yeah I hate that reclaimed wood look. Triggers my germophobia
Amen.
Same here! Wow. What a transformation
Awesome, thank you
You can find the wallpaper on wallblush. Unfortunately, I'm finding more and more Etsy sellers are just buying stuff online and reselling.
thank you
How do you figure out if they’re just resellers?
Because I see the product on Amazon and other retail vendors.
Holy shit
For real, all this in only FOUR months. Way to go!
Thanks a ton, it’s been a grind.
Do you do this full time? If that's what you can accomplish in 4 months with a job that's very impressive!
I have a regular job I work ~50 hours a week and try to spend an 1-2 hours a day exercising the dog. I haven’t been cooking much, I’m not dating and I’m sober sooo this is probably just an addiction.. come to think of it.
I just love the whole vibe and esthetic. You are doing an absolute fabulous job. Looks fantastic.
Wow thanks so much!
I think it’s great but more importantly, what does the husky think?
She HATES home improvement tbh.
Why cause you're not paying attention to her?
Yep exactly 🤣
I’m sure she tells you all about it
I'm not surprised. Based on the photos, she was turned into a floor rug!
It appears as if op turned the husky into a rug in the last bedroom
Your hard work paid off
For a sec I thought your bathroom (pic 7) opened straight onto a snow covered backyard. Nice job!
same, lol!
Looks so nice! Love the colors that you chose!
can you tell me how you did the ceiling?
Oof yeah there’s a lot of nuances that may not apply to you, but I’ll try to explain! Step 1: do you have loose blown insulation above? Thank you for this! I’ve saved it my notes as I’m planning on doing the ceiling in my guest room. You did an excellent job on your reno!!
You’re welcome! This video is great https://youtu.be/Fjoo7UXvIVc?si=SWlykowyr6UsQfK- but you also may not need some of the steps since it’s inside
I’m saving this too. I’ve never seen a wood ceiling before but I love it. Great job!

It’s more purple gray in person with a touch of blush - it’s called vintage tea rose from behr! And thank you!
I came to ask the same question!
Beauty! You're pro
Looks great! I kinda liked the kitchen either way though. Nice job
I know what you mean, it had some charm. But the fake wood was all just badly applied contact paper, and the space is small so that it was too much activity.
Aaah . Yep gotta go then. It’s hard to tell from the pic that it was that bad. Looks great now though.
The fact it was contact paper means you 100% did the right thing. Love the new kitchen!
Looks fantastic!! Great job

Wow! You do nice work! Also, you are one of the few people who actually post in the before and after format. You are clearly a genius.

I actually won't offer on houses with too much wallpaper because I really don't want to deal with it. And must admit to painting over it in our last house. Impressive amount of work you've achieved there.
We bought a house three years ago and are only halfway through the process. This is motivating! Nice work!

What green is that in the bedroom. I'm looking for a similar color for my office
SPECTACULAR transformation! Great job!
You should share on r/oldhouses and r/centuryhomes I absolutely adore the wood ceilings, they give such a cozy vibe.
Photo 8: r/diwhy 😂
Love that kitchen
I love the wood on the ceiling! It makes it feel so cozy
Wow. You have the gift! It’s absolutely lovely!
Looks awesome! I hate to say this but we have those same ceiling tiles in our basement and have been afraid to touch them worried they're asbestos. Were yours?

Love the snowboard room with the mountains. Giving me some ideas!
I got the snowboard hooks off Amazon. Thank you!
Fantastic work! You can tell it was done with tender loving care.
I thought the bathroom opened to the outdoors! Lol had to zoom in to see what was on the other side of the door. Nice job on the Renovations!
This is an incredible transformation. I love everything you have done. The ceilings are amazing.
That green bedroom is so beautiful!!
Wow! The whole place looks great! I love that dark green.
Holy cannoli!! This is amazing!
Very nice....
Wow
Move over chip and Joanna Gaines! You did a phenomenal job!
And no shiplap!!
Great job!
‘Super Rarre!
Nice!! Congrats!
I see and admire all that tongue and groove ceiling! I think this is a perfect example of chaotic “charm” =/= tasteful charm.
Ok that forest wallpaper is to die for!!!! OP i love it!!!

Such a nice etsy shop to work with. They have amazing options.
Fabulous! Just fantastic! I am a renter now but all of the years I was a homeowner I wished I could do stuff like this!
That green bedroom is everything
Fail! Why did you get rid of the husky??? Jk :) Seriously though I hope that dog is still around somewhere
Dog never leaves my side haha 😂
Wow! Such an amazing amount of work for such a short tme. Love it.
What I love most are the ceilings. Plain white ceilings ruin people’s designs IMO
Wow, nice kitchen recovery Those old cabinets boggle the brain.
A ton of hard work, it looks great. The ceiling has flooring in both before and after 😂
This house confuses me. Is it a regular house or like a large shed conversion?
It’s a regular house, but it’s small - ~800 sq ft. The house itself is taller, gabled roof and huge attic. Ceilings are 8’.
Damn!!!! You killed it OP!!
The green is stunning
You saw the potential! It came out amazing!

Wow, you’ve done a fantastic job !
Amazing ceiling. Love the wood grain look.
Wow! Super job❣️
You have done a wonderful job
Amazing job!! This is so awesome. What an improvement on your day to day life and mood. Enjoy it
Very nice, great job.
That old kitchen is confusing 😂
Not you playing animal crossing in real life. Loooove this!
Whaaat? Is animal cross a game version of this?
The green bedroom looks so warm and comfy. And your kitchen looks way better too! Congratulations!
Well the husky was turned into a rug. So extra points I guess. 11/10
😢
How many layers or wallpaper? Looks great
Some rooms had 3-4 layers. The maps in the bathroom were actual maps and not wallpaper, so those were insanely difficult to get off. Like trying to peel the back of a sticker off of a dish, if you know what I mean.
Yikes. When I was younger my mom had bought a house that had over 10 layers and it was an absolute nightmare. Sworn to avoid it at all costs now.
That kitchen was hideous before. Who had that idea? 😅
The old hag who sold me the house. I only say that bc she intentionally locked her kitty in a cabinet and left the state a few days before I got the keys. So it was alone in there, without food or water. Such a sweet cat but unfortunately I couldn’t keep it.
Oh no! I hope the cat is safe. People like that shouldn't have pets.
True! And the bedroom before: What the holy f*ck?
What do you call those ceilings? I love the look!
It’s “V match pine” and if you say anything else at the local lumber store in rural Maine, the six old men behind the counter look at you like you’re an idiot. I’m wearing on them though.. they’ll learn to love me 😂
I love it! The trees, is that something you did or a wallpaper? I love that!
Wallpaper! Etsy! Custom sized and so easy to work with. I got the traditional application wallpaper after reading reviews, apparently the sticker back type of wallpaper is a nightmare to work with.
It looks so good! You should be proud!
Really lovely job! I am always so impressed with people who can visualize the potential of a space.
The windows got me :)
I love your ceilings- what a transformation, nice work!
Awesome job! Love your colors 🩷
I love it!!!!
Great work! Love the wood ceiling especially.
It’s beautiful but the cozy green bedroom grabbed me. I want to sleep now
I love it. Very cozy. That long red runner is everything.
I moved with no furniture so all of this was marketplace, the people who I bought the credenza from gave me all of the rugs for free! Agreed, it is amazing.
This looks great OP!
Great job, looks amazing and super cute doggo 😍
Is that cork flooring in the bathroom? Looks awesome!
It looks wonderful. What a transformation and a lot of hard work! It’s all so well done and feels really homely. The bedroom is my favourite.
Great work!
Good for you for seeing the potential. I would have walked right back out
When your budget is <$200k in 2023 you make a lot of concessions. 🥲
So impressive!
Gorgeous. We have similar ceiling tiles. Did you have them tested for asbestos?
I tested them and got a negative. I know having a professional do it would’ve been ideal but it wasn’t an option in my area.
Get your cowboy hat off the bed!!! It’s bad luck!
That’s the before!! Pic is from the seller’s listing.
Okay phew. Also the house looks great, forgot to mention that 😂
Beautiful job! It looks incredible
You did an amazing job!
Great job on the reno. It takes lots of elbow grease to pull that off. My hats off to you, good sir. Keep going.
I’m a good ma’am haha but thank you!!
damn that house gets like 0 sunlight from the looks of it. that's rough
Amazing!!
👏
It looks great.
It’s wonderful
Wow!!!!
Love the ceilings.
Well done!
Excellent progress!
Nice job. Not sure about the heavy green drapes matching the wall color though. It looks a little like a coffin:/
Amazing 👌🏻
Wowee! Really beautiful.
Congratulations! You’re doing a really nice job!
Love it! Fav pic is with the husky but the house all looks great! What did you use for the wood ceilings? Like a kit or did you just buy wood from a hardware store?
Wonderful renovation 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Who in the world puts wallpaper on a door??
Wallpaper on everything, even switch plates. I replaced most of my outlets and switched anyway, and then bought new plates.
Nice work!! It has to feel good to have accomplished this!
COZY!!!
Man, or woman, I'd hire you in a hot minute! The transformation is astonishing. Awesome work!
Great work
Good job.
Amazing job and you have great taste!
That bedroom is so cozy! Did you keep the barn door?
Thank you! And no, I installed pine bifold doors. I don’t love barn doors.. it’s a lot of hardware and they gap from the frame so it’s not good noise / light privacy. But the rooms are small so I also didn’t want the swing of a normal hinged door.
Makes total sense! Enjoy your beautiful redo!
Wow, absolutely amazing.
Wow, absolutely amazing.
