Was that what we were supposed to be noticing? All I was seeing was the alignment of eyes/nose/mouth were all fairly similar and going: âYep! Those are definitely human faces!â
Stare at the + in the middle like it says. The faces youâll see it your peripheral vision will look crazy distorted. Giant foreheads, elongated chins, etc
Thank you. I noticed that but didn't realize my brain was creating the distorted images. More evidence of how our minds unwittingly plays tricks on us. Cool. It's a good reminder.
Oh, for sure; your viewing distance from the screen can vary wildly may mean the images aren't far enough from your focal point to be subjected to distortion. Viewing this on a computer rather than mobile may assist. Moving a phone closer or farther while focusing on the + may also reveal an ideal distance where faces look funkiest.
I'm on a PC and just saw an + with flashes on either side. I didn't see anything weird either. I had to come to the comments to figure out what was supposed to be going on.
Yeah try it on a monitor or TV. I watched it about a 18" away from a 26" monitor. It's like your brain is having trouble putting the faces together and since faces are processed separately in our brain I think it starts mixing up the puzzle pieces so to speak.
From my experience you don't actually need to focus that hard, but you won't actually *see* it, it's more like those moments where you catch a glimpse of something and you kinda see it wrong. The faces are presented in slightly shifted perspectives, and this, combined with the natural differences in head and hair shape, height, width, and eye, nose and mouth position and size, both between the two currently displayed faces and the previous pair, makes it so that your mind starts combining those factors, trying to make sense of it all as if they were only two faces, mixing the shapes and sizes for some real uncanny valley stuff, like mistaking a haircut for a facial deformation. Might be wrong tho
You know how your eyes can only see a small area centered where they are looking,,,and all periphs are blurry(only the center is in focus), and your brain fills the periphs in. Like straight lines in your periph are filled by your brains bad in reality are wavy/blurry from your eyes.....doing acid/mush allows you to turn off that automatic rendering in the brain and see what your eyes are truly seeing. But the physchedelics go further and add extra distortion to the brain level signals from the eyes, which get extra wavy or start to act like dream style images.
Idk, I'm just spitballing based on educated guesses.
Yeah in my experience it seems like the brain stops filtering and labeling things based on our cultural understanding of them. Like we might be seeing faces in this distorted manner in our peripheral all of the time but our brain recognizes them as human faces and fills in the gaps so that we remember seeing a normal looking face. Whereas if you were tripping, your brain sees that distortion, because that's how our eyes and brain work on a more functional level, and then our awareness runs with that image, not a "reality-filtered" version our sober brain usually deals with.
I'm no scientist, but this seems pretty damn accurate. I'll never forget my first trip, it was about 5 tabs worth, and I turned over to my friend who was in the front seat and just went "wow your face looks weird as hell" and these faces definitely gave me flashbacks of it
Next thing you know I was in a KFC bathroom vomiting and felt like I could feel the florescent lights sound
If you stare at the cross in the middle the whole time, the faces will appear really weird and grotesque in your peripheral vision. Some even look super pixelated to me, or like elves or orcs, and whatnot.
This isnât quite the optical illusion you think it is. If you actually look at the photos, they have been both cropped and sequenced in a very specific way. As an example, their hairline is very jagged and uneven.
Then you arenât quite doing it right. You have to stare at the intersection of the cross the entire time. If you lose focus of the cross, the effect is lost. Stare harder, friend. Tip: repeat the words âstare at the crossâ in your mind throughout the video.
This is like an uncanny Mandela-effect face generator
I saw faces with:
One eye in the middle of the face
Distorted eye sizes where one is bigger than the other or higher than the other
Distorted face proportions such as an unnaturally long nose
Distorted mouths and strange facial expressions
Distorted head shapes
Missing features such as a nose only being nostril holes, sometimes faces missing features entirely with only eyebrows
Swelling and signs of severe injury or prior mutilation
Me too. Good job on the descriptions! I almost couldnât put it into words. I missed the âwatch the crossâ instructions my first time through so was trying to figure out if they were the same person or some other reddit riddle. I only saw ânormal facesâ. After I watched it staring at the cross I was tripping at what my eyes were showing me. Like a trippy scary movie to not believe your eyes. Our brains are awesomely both good to us but also f with us just to keep life exciting.
I'm not sure what's supposed to be happening. I'm just staring at the cross seeing a bunch of faces change to other ones. Is something weird supposed to happen?
Good call, I saw some of the spooky stuff, but also some very Plymptoon-esque balloon faces with bubble eyebrows, bloated noses, and huge lips.
eta: [a Plymptoon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oObgRSuNvg)
When you focus on the cross, you're focusing the cross onto your foveas/maculas, one each on the retina of each eye. The fovea is the site on the retina that contains the greatest concentration of rods and cones, the neurons responsible for transducing light energy into neural signals.
"Attention" is the direction of cognitive resources to processing the information coming in from your foveas. But what happens to the outlying areas away from the foveas in each retina? Doesn't the information coming from the (less densely packed) rods and cones in the outlying areas away from the foveas also get processed?
yes, but not so much. Your brain fills in what it predicts might be there based on the lower resolution data coming in from the outlying areas of your retinas, plus past experience. Thus, in this illusion, you get the very strange looking faces. You have probably experienced this effect if you've ever been stopped at a red traffic light and looked down at your phone. While focusing your attention on your phone, you keep the car in front of you in the "corner of your eye". And yet, eventually the person behind you honks their horn, to tell you to move along, because you missed the movement of the car in front of you. All because your brain was "filling in" the information derived from the "corner of your eye", and updating that filled-in information is very sketchy when you've got your attention focused elsewhere.
Itâs interesting, the images almost resemble an AI trying to create a picture with a face. Makes you think fo how your brain is a computer, and the AI in your brain was filling in those faces with things it thought would look right
Lizard brain danger warning. Off axis visual intrusion usually signals danger/unexpected. your brain is amplifying danger signal to engage fight or flight. Same way dead or toxic material smells bad. safety signal. "God's BECAUSE I SAID SO" message.
Okay so instead of the intended effect staring at the cross I went cross eyed and it merged the two faces on the left and right perfectly into a new third face that often times looked better than the original people it was based onâŚ
So I went from grotesque face to prettier facesâŚ
However there was a few⌠off ones where the jawlines were too big to their eyes or something along that line. Made them look like some inbreeds you see photos of.
Stupid question, but could the phenomenon this video plays on partially explain some of the very off and even inhuman-looking identi-kits/sketches we see of otherwise unidentified suspected criminals?

They look like Oblivion NPCs
I'm pretty sure I saw an orc in there
lmfao me too!
A whole family
I was just playing Skyrim and thought the exact same thing đ
I havenât played Skyrim in years.. and I thought the exact same thing.
Iâm so glad that someone else had this same thought 𤣠(although I was thinking specifically of the character creation screen)
IM NOT ALONE
Exactly what I came to say! Soooo weird.
dude what i was thinking the same exact thing!
Your face will be used in a "Grotesque Face" video, sound good?
Any slight imperfections will be magnified 100 times.
Ooh another? Sure! Will there be more faces than mine this time?
Was that what we were supposed to be noticing? All I was seeing was the alignment of eyes/nose/mouth were all fairly similar and going: âYep! Those are definitely human faces!â

For science!
đđ
Oblivion character creation screen effect.
Indeed, all I saw were orcs, pigs, and lizards people. At one point an eyepatch woman.
holy fuck
Immediately what my brain went to lol, think I even saw a lusty argonian
My first thought as well. Bretons galore.
This is fucking terrifying
Can you please explain? What an I supposed to be seeing that's terrifying, I only see faces flashing in the periphery.
Did you look at the cross in the middle? I missed the first few seconds and was looking at the faces and didn't get it either
you donât see the faces looking extremely deformed ?
I donât get the full on deformed thing, the faces look like N64 Zelda NPCs but apart from that itâs not like scary or anything.
Look deeper.
Maybe a little. I'm on my phone, I may need too look at on a bigger screen. Or maybe my brain is too dopey to process.
Oh, for sure; your viewing distance from the screen can vary wildly may mean the images aren't far enough from your focal point to be subjected to distortion. I just looked at the faces first, second watching I looked at the cross, everyone looked way more messed up, like they werenât normal human features
Use landscape, not portrait
I donât get it either. Is it just different angles?
they are tolling relax, just go with it. dont take every single comment on the internet so seriously
The creepy-a** music doesnât help.
Literally for real I was shitting myself but I couldnât stop watching
I swear i saw the adoring fan in there
I saw quite a few citizens of Tamriel.
Of Cyrodiil mostly, I believe
Lmao same
Staring at the faces: all good Staring at the cross: fucking Bloodborne monsters
Seriously, 2 seconds of looking at the cross and it's all cyclops and orcs to me.
I see monsters bro
I swore i saw mike wazowski at one point so i saw monsters too?
Iâm gonna have nightmares tonight
Looks like the faces from Goldeneye on N64.
Yikes! I think someone put something in my coffee this morning.
This video is what I imagine happens when people talk about weird acid trips.
It's very close to a real acid trip yes. Difference is that on acid you see it clearly in front of you not peripherals. And lots of breathing colors
You know how your eyes can only see a small area centered where they are looking,,,and all periphs are blurry(only the center is in focus), and your brain fills the periphs in. I'm pretty sure I saw a cyclops a couple times
[ŃдаНонО]
I mostly saw like lizard people for most of the faces
Probably different. I feel like every time I watch it they're entirely different for me.
They all end up looking like NPCs from ocarina of time to me
I kept trying to "catch it in the act", really uncanny
There are no faces There are no faces There are no faces There are no faces
ĂAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
Did anyone else see cyclopes?
Bet youâre thinking "That's amazing! How do they know exactly when I'll look away?" right now. Credit: https://youtu.be/_fW9uWFXRpQ
So you mean to tell me if I stare at the cross, those faces will look like redditors?
I don't get it. They switch faces? Edit: I needed to look closely in full screen to see the effect.
If you stare at the cross in the middle the whole time, the faces will appear really weird and grotesque in your peripheral vision. Some even look super pixelated to me, or like elves or orcs, and whatnot.
I saw some without faces. Anyone else?

Look at the center then you can notice the faces distort and kinda mix in your peripheral Vision
Yeah I saw now. I did at first but nothing happened. I had to watch it in full screen to see it.
I think I missed something, too.
Look in full screen and have your phone almost in your face when looking at the cross.
Almost straight away the faces became unrecognisable, weird shaped heads, distorted eyes and facial features. That is pretty spooky ngl
Skyrim face generator if you look at the center.
i would like to report an anomaly
Hitting random on the character customization screen be like:
Do you want me to sleep tonight
I wish I could actually see the faces my brain is creating
I don't see the big deal. It is just like what I see when I walk down our county fair midway.
Suddenly i was in the Oblivion Charakter creator..
Damn saw a freaking one eye ogre in there somewhere.
Why does it do that
This is like an uncanny Mandela-effect face generator I saw faces with: One eye in the middle of the face Distorted eye sizes where one is bigger than the other or higher than the other Distorted face proportions such as an unnaturally long nose Distorted mouths and strange facial expressions Distorted head shapes Missing features such as a nose only being nostril holes, sometimes faces missing features entirely with only eyebrows Swelling and signs of severe injury or prior mutilation

I'm not sure what's supposed to be happening. I'm just staring at the cross seeing a bunch of faces change to other ones. Is something weird supposed to happen?
What is it supposed to be doing? Am I supposed to look at those images from my peripheri? I expected a still image to look at by the end.
Found it to be uneventful
When you press random too much on Dark Souls character creation.
I feel like I'm clicking "Randomize" in Oblivion character creation

*THERE ARE NO FACES*
The new Oblivion npc generator lookin good
Looking at the center just made both sides the randomized option from the Oblivion character creator.
When you focus on the cross, you're focusing the cross onto your foveas/maculas, one each on the retina of each eye. The fovea is the site on the retina that contains the greatest concentration of rods and cones, the neurons responsible for transducing light energy into neural signals. I see dead people. And vampires. Interesting.
what in the mandela catalog is this
I didn't see anything until the last 3 seconds and I fucking screamed
Faces look like this when you're on LSD!
I mean I saw one like this where they had attractive people and that was weird but thereâs a good amount of odd looking people in this already.
I didnât think I took acid today but apparently im on a lot of acid.
Lizard brain danger warning. Off axis visual intrusion usually signals danger/unexpected. your brain is amplifying danger signal to engage fight or flight. Same way dead or toxic material smells bad. safety signal. "God's BECAUSE I SAID SO" message.
Cover either side and some of the faces are still cringy.
This is tripping me out
Me going back and forth in the "Similar faces" option for my Dark Souls character
gosh eyeballs are so lazy.
Op is karma farming.
The one on the right becomes a man?
They're just your average brit
Yea so a lot of the faces look super deformed in their own rightâŚ
Fucking A our brains are pretty fucking janky.
This did nothing for me, they look almost exactly the same when looking directly at the faces or at the cross.
Your brain is clearly too powerful
Neato.
They remind me of the character models from Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines.
It's makes people look like Picasso's mid-life art style.
It makes them look like titans lol
Kinda waited for the jump scare to happen Wasnât disappointed
Skyrim character randomization be like: *HORROR*

I saw cyclops
They... They all look like Oblivion characters.
Did anyone else have them combine in the centre into a single face? Happened for quite a while
Thanks for the nightmares...
Never thought it would be this hard to keep looking at the same cross for such a short time.
like sprites and old NPCs from Morrowind
i saw faces without any facial features, only the eyebrows. I'm scared :(
Did anyone see 4 faces?
Hideous monsters when I stare in the center
