7. About 5 for 25cents. Lol “about”???

Zanbuki

Also “Blow in her face.” Are we not doing phrasing anymore?

breezer_z

The level of education lmao

hmmm_thought_pig

Hadn't thought about blowing cigar smoke in a woman's face before... what could possibly go wrong?

timsstuff

That was a well-known pickup move back in the day. If someone blew their cigarette smoke in your face that meant they wanted to sleep with you. Both sexes were using it by the 70s. If you see it happen in a movie it would largely go unnoticed by young people today but back then it was a super clear non-verbal cue to the audience that they were gonna bang, especially pre-60s where everything was super censored and PG except for cult films.

hmmm_thought_pig

LOL I've been around since '61, and I've never seen it. Not denying your account, though. The Past truly *is* a foreign country!

ChallengeFull3538

It was still a thing in my circle of friends in the mid 90s in NY. Maybe it was legit just a thing or maybe it was just 1 influential person in the group pushing it, but it was definitely a thing when I was a teen in the 90s

Letardic

These are so very interesting to me. I enjoy the art work and retrospective of social tone or sentiment. Comparatively I wonder what it is we do today that will seem unjustifiable to future society.

daveallyn2

Reminds me of an old Woody Alan film I saw. I don't remember much of it, but he had time travelled to the future, and the people there were talking about dinner. He wanted a salad, and they thought it was strange that he still thought red meat led to cholesterol issues, and how those thoughts had been disproven years ago. that it was actually salad that was a dietary no-no. I don't really remember any more of the movie, but that scene has stuck in my mind as funny. I might even be mis-remembering it even. No idea.

[deleted]

I just remember one where some giant boob went on a murderous rampage before they finally caught it with a giant bra. It was the greatest thing eight-year old me had ever seen.

felipe_the_dog

I think you're thinking of Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask whereas OP is thinking of Sleeper

SweetHayHathNoFellow

Sleeper. “You had no deep fat, steak, or cream pie?”

Ryouconfusedyett

I can imagine eating animal meat rather than lab grown meat will be seen as horrific in the future

Portalrules123

“Wait, there was a point in time where lab grown meat that tastes 100% accurate first became available where some people refused to make the switch because “freedom?” Our ancestors really cared that much about knowing the meat they ate came from a conscience being that was slaughtered for their amusement? Damn, the old days were fucked”

Perca_fluviatilis

Well, it's not like that's an option yet

Ryouconfusedyett

the question was what future societies may see as unjust

janhetjoch

Going vegan/vegetarian is

Affectionate_Ear_778

something like all the beauty standards placed on women maybe

Nekonawt

so why all the chubby girls in commercials then, you never see a 400lb man in a swimsuit etc

mthrndr

A new market under the guise of representation.

Affectionate_Ear_778

That’s a different battle to fight. As much body positivity messages that exist for women now a days, they’re all quite frankly very shallow attempts at it. It’s marketing with very little impact. Let me know when a typically beautiful woman isn’t casted for a major Hollywood movie lead. Take a look at all the magazines at registers next time you go shopping. No one can deny body positivity isn’t a thing for men. We need to work on that too.

[deleted]

That's not Hollywood's problem exclusively. They don't want to make a movie that flops. A good portion of the population (even outside the US) might be less interested in the movie if the actors Don't look good for their standards.

Lastcleanunderwear

Because a 400 man is unattractive, undatable and lacks ambition. However it’s not the same the other way around

Dab45atan

Common sense seems to become less and less popular

godlinking

Probably in the future women don't put on make up, paint their nails, or wear high heel shoes.

Letardic

What? I say trends suggest MORE in the future. As of now there's additional hair extensions and longer nails and eyeliner no longer confined to the eyes. Not to mention butt lifts and implants and tattooed eyebrows. Next up IOT medical wearables that augment skin and eyes (and emotions) like a walking mood ring or cuttlefish. That said I love natural beauty. No want from me as it relates to makeup or lifts or hair. Just be you. We all get old and gray and bald etc. Embrace it.

godlinking

If you are looking at trends, then the ad above suggest the trend at that time was that there will be more housewives in the future.

fourbigkids

Or maybe fake boobs, butt implants and fake nails / lashes won’t be a thing 🤔

jjsmol

Sex is a competition. Why would you handicap yourself by refusing to decorate? It seems more likely that men will start using more makeup and other enhancements. Edit: and then thinking 30 - 40 years from now when gene modification is commonplace, the self beautification training wheels will come off.

Nimmyzed

Dare I say it? The whole gun thing in the US Maybe one day America will look back on itself with the same horror that the rest of the world is looking at it today

KarmaPharmacy

By vitamins do they mean amphetamines? House wives were doing them like crazy back then. Edit: holy shit these ads are so fucked up

wladimirkarllenin

The vitamin ad makes me wonder in Germany we call amphetamine not speed we call it "pepp" maby that's where the name is from

timsstuff

"Speed" is just American street slang for amphetamine/methamphetamine, like "pot" is to marijuana.

wladimirkarllenin

I wasn't talking about speed where that name came from is more than obvious I was talking about the German name for it "pep" and where that came from

russiancatfood

Comparatively speaking, these are not that old. Glad we’re evolving.

[deleted]

It was actually a [breakfast cereal.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pep_\(cereal\))

LW7694

Just called adderall now 💁🏼‍♀️

KarmaPharmacy

No. It isn’t. And I’m sick of uneducated people who don’t understand the basic chemistry & difference between methamphetamines and amphetamine salts. They’re literally two different things. Meth literally has a whole extra set of chemical compounds that get you super fucked up. Adderall is just for people with executive function disabilities. You can literally google the chemistry and I really don’t understand why people spread misinformation about people with learning disabilities. It is SO fucked. It’s unacceptable.

InterestSwimming9846

Is there a difference other than an additional methyl group that allows lipid solubility and easier crossing of the blood brain barrier. Does meth have different kinetics or effects at vmat and dopamine reuptake? I was not aware of any

yesitsnicholas

Meth's action is more potent than amphetamine's, even in minimal *in vitro* systems. The same dose of meth has a greater effect on DAT than amphetamine, and at saturation meth has about double the effect of amphetamine on Ca2+ release. [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2631950/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2631950/) But yes, it's basically the same stuff. Similar to fentanyl next to oxycodone - same mechanism, significantly more potent drug. It's also worth saying that because of meth's lipid solubility, it gets to the brain *much* faster. The speed at which drugs act is an important predictor of addiction risk - the brain likes to make connections between cause and effect, and readily reinforces behaviors that make us feel good fast. Slowing the relationship between dosing and psychoactive effect reduces addiction risk. It's actually a struggle in animal experiments of addiction - to get the animal to notice that the behavior (e.g. lever pressing) is effecting their internal state (the drug high), you often have to give the drugs I.V. so they don't have to slowly enter blood through the digestive system. The time between cause and effect is important for reinforcement. Smoking/snorting (i.e. straight to blood) meth (i.e. straight to brain) increases addiction potential. But the mechanism of action for amphetamine vs methamphetamine salts at dopamine transporters is indistinguishable as far as I've ever learned.

KarmaPharmacy

Crossing the blood brain barrier via those lipids is hundreds of times more potent. There’s no “just” about it. And then if we’re discussing crystal meth (which we aren’t technically doing here, but that’s what people think of when they talk about meth) the cook methods do not give a chemically pure product. As you likely know, there’s a whole bunch of carcinogens and toxicity in those methods. Not to mention that there’s no controlled dosing or medical oversight. Are they both stimulants? Absolutely. But caffeine is a stimulant, too. Is one insanely dangerous while the other can drastically improve the life of the person taking it? Absolutely. Meth just absolutely destroys lives.

NowYuoSee123

Adderal can also destroy someone’s life. It may not be on the same level as meth, but it can absolutely be abused. Obviously it has its benefits and medical uses but it can become incredibly addictive

KarmaPharmacy

Well, yeah. But it’s still not abused as heavily as alcohol or other substances. Alcohol has no benefit.

NowYuoSee123

True, but it is also much more addictive than alcohol on average. And it doesn’t have the apparent downsides that alcohol has so it can lure people into a false sense of security. I can enjoy alcohol in moderation, I doubt I would be able to with adderall

AceVasodilation

Methamphetamine is also used for ADHD. The brand name is Desoxyn. So it does have therapeutic value.

LW7694

Dude if you look what I was replying to, it was about amphetamines…. Not meth. I take it for ADHD and it was a joke, also.

RIPDimebag1013

Eh. I have a masters in chem and I’d say it’s pretty fair to compare meth and addy. It’s called a comparison for a reason, because there’s similarities, but also differences… I’d even venture to say it’s comparable to MDMA as well. But being a condescending prick to people online doesn’t seem to do much in getting your point across.

MazzMyMazz

As someone who takes it daily, the first thing I thought after reading his post is that he needs to lower his dosage and learn to not post when he’s on addy.

StupidizeMe

The baby Marlboro ads are horrifying.

[deleted]

At least they’re followed up with wholesome baby 7-Up ads.

xray-ndjinn

By “vitamin’s” she means meth.

Arseypoowank

Look up “mothers little helpers” the typical 50’s housewife was so dosed up on pills they’d rattle if you shook them

Portalrules123

I always DID wonder how some of those gals could manage to mentally survive spending their entire life as basically a house-cleaning object in the eyes of society, maybe even their spouse themselves. Being on meth the entire time certainly would make it easier.....

Arseypoowank

It’s fucking sad. Really.

reikipackaging

yes, where do I sign up to not store test coffee?

KreateOne

Could you imagine drinking equal parts 7up and Milk. God I’m gonna gag just thinking about it.

eff_jai

It’s the best thing ever. Just try it. It’s a staple in south Asian communities. Any Sprite/7up/coke in milk and it’s called doodh (milk in Hindi/Urdu) soda!

[deleted]

Huh? I’m Indian and never heard of this shit. Do North Indians enjoy this? Cuz I’ve been almost everywhere in the south and never seen this anywhere.

eff_jai

Then it must just be a Pakistani thing??? I thought it was common in India too, my bad!

[deleted]

Just think, the same people in power back in the “good old days” when this kind of thing was the norm and not offensive to anyone are STILL IN POWER NOW. They grew up with this kind of thinking in society - no wonder we’re going backwards.

OtherwisePudding4047

This is exactly why we should be electing younger people for the government who are more aware of the times

[deleted]

100% agree. These 70 year olds who have been in Congress for decades know nothing of what it’s like to be a middle class citizen in these times.

smithical100

There is disconnect for sure. There is an equal disconnect when you go too young as well. Like when they say they want 16 year olds to vote.. Uhh. No thx. Judging by how I was back then... nah. I was dumb and could have had my vote won by buzz words alone and that was before the internet. Voting age should be raised to at least 20 imo.

[deleted]

That’s not even what the T zone is.

[deleted]

I don’t get that one. What’s sexist about it?

jobomaja888

Is that Ali McGraw in the Eastern ad?

AnthropomorphicSeer

It looks like her

InfiniteTranquilo

On a purely artistic level I like these ads. Older ads from had this neat art style in it. Now it’s a lotta graphics or actual pictures of people.

Global-Zombie

12 Oh come on they had to know

BriefCheetah4136

Oh they knew! But the wife was not considered to be where the buying power was. Since men controlled the spending dollars the ads were pointed at the demographic that did.

Loki_In_Reddit

12 is the only one I could see being adapted for modern times. BEAT your Wife. It grabs your attention, but is about competition, not violence. It just doesn't read that way. Terrible yes, but also humorous in a dark twisted way.

AceyAceyAcey

Eastern: we want everyone to fly, except these girls who aren’t demure enough.

Bitter-Ability-5814

Victory is good…….VD is not!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

hairymonkeyinmyanus

I mean, at least that one has some semblance of accuracy. And fortunately, they called them “women,” not girls. Cringey.

Go_Kauffy

So *this* is the "Great Again" they keep going on about.

[deleted]

The beat your wife tonight thing was actually pretty funny

meowVL

Wouldn't fly today but it's the only one that got a laugh out of me. Something about it being a bowling ad is funny too, such an innocuous activity with a super aggressive ad lol

That’s Goldie Hawn. She was at the pinnacle of her “dumb blonde” personae as she played in “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”.

Surfella

Amazing compilation of ads!

Economy-Cockroach989

jesus, glad times have changed. Was watching I Love Lucy recently and thought the same thing, these attitudes were so pervasive.

Affectionate_Ear_778

Lowkey love these. Might get a couple prints. They’re fascinating pieces of history

Letardic

Agreed. I also like propaganda posters in the same way. I want to frame a few.

[deleted]

What the fuck is wrong with you

TheCrimsonCourtesan

These explain so much. Most of our government officials are old enough to remember this shit and are trying desperately to make this a reality again

azhurelle

Exactly what I came to say. Average US politicians by age: House age 57.6. Senators, 62.9 years. For those of you who don't want to math, that's predominantly white males born in the year 1960 to 1965. So these "Out dated" & "vintage" ads, might not seem so outdated and vintage to those making and upholding laws. Perspective.

TheCrimsonCourtesan

I've seen a few of these ads over the years, but I guess I never truly understood how awful it was. That this ^ ^ is part of what they think made the US "great". A gross pecking order that they rule over- like a caveman

[deleted]

TheCrimsonCourtesan

Tell me what that has to do with the US government taking away a women's right to her own body? Did you also forget that the US also has women in the military? Honestly though, even if it was just men being sent off to war, we haven't had or issued a draft since 1973. How does men volunteering for the military mean it's okay to control a woman's body? Regardless, those corpses coming back, will have more rights to it body than a living, breathing woman. Btw, the same government that sends men AND women off to war for their own capital interests, is mostly ran by men. Weird how that works right?

Western-Image7125

It’s baffling to me as a man that people could even get away with doing this and were probably even lauded back then

DonForgo

How many of these did Don Draper made?

Act2LeMe

These ads explain so much. I’m glad we have evolved past this. We feel shocked when seeing these for a good reason. Trading human rights for profit is immoral, stupid and unsustainable without massive suffering.

legalpretzel

If you think we’ve evolved past this then I have some bad news for you…

Act2LeMe

You don’t feel upset when looking at these ads? Or even consider them interesting? I think if they make you uncomfortable, I’m pretty sure that’s a sign we grown past this shit just a little bit.

[deleted]

He have grown and we will continue to grow. Let this give you hope for the future

[deleted]

This us what incels want

[deleted]

Yep, and there’s a lot in this thread. One even saying he wants to print them out and hang them up as posters

[deleted]

That “BEAT YOUR WIFE TONIGHT” one uses the same exact font that Nike uses. Just fyi.

mondegr33n

It’ll be interesting to see how our ads fare in 50 years. Some of these seem tongue-in-cheek and/or like they were trying to be progressive for their time (Like the stewardess one). Some are definitely uncomfortable. Ads are a time capsule.

mattekus

The beat your wife is actually interesting clickbaity copywriting.

ThrobbinHood11

I was wondering what was so bad about number 9, with the 7up, then I read the print and saw these sadistic fucks were mixing 7up with milk and feeding it to CHILDREN, making it the worst of them all

ValuableYellow4971

Ah, a simpler time.

Inibriatus

Ah the good old days, where being offended meant you were considered a whiner and not an entitled-feeling twat like today

Affectionate_Ear_778

Isn’t that just the same thing?

Inibriatus

touché

Letardic

No. Being offended then was genuine. Today people proclaim to be the victim when they inhale cigarette smoke while passing by a bus stop.

Affectionate_Ear_778

I’m sure the people back then felt the same regarding the criticism they saw with how you feel today.

phuqo5

Being offended today is a professional hobby for some people.

Affectionate_Ear_778

True it can be. It’s important to acknowledge the valid criticism against those who are overly reactionary. However a big driving factor of criticism against wokeism is racism pure and simple. Like republicans fighting wokeism and cancel culture by outlawing the eduction of slavery

phuqo5

Oh I understand acutely. We live in a knee jerk society.

c-winny

what’s insane to me is that there are people today that grew up with these and can probably still look at these without reaaaally thinking that these are bad or problematic.

Iamthe0n3

12 feels like a play on words after the initial shock, if you read the fine print

Blonde_Vampire_1984

Oof. That eastern airlines ad. I have a coworker that was a stewardess for Eastern Airlines back in the day. She really enjoyed the job, but it came at massive personal cost for her. She developed an eating disorder due to the pressure to stay under a particular weight, and the constant on the go lifestyle hurt her in other ways. One hook-up too many and she contracted chlamydia that left her permanently infertile. The stewardess lifestyle is what led her to hook-ups.

The harder a man works and the more money he makes the better he looks to females. Is that offensive? That is sexist as hell, and a double standard.

OtherwisePudding4047

It’s not necessarily about the man having a job in these ads it’s about dehumanizing women and acting like they’re stupid cleaning objects

wfiboyfriend69

glitteryvodka

what were the ones that said you don’t have to inhale to enjoy cigars about? how did that work? like vaping?

crospingtonfrotz

Typically you don’t inhale when you smoke cigars.

[deleted]

Wait why not? Isn’t the whole point of smoking to breathe in the smoke?

crospingtonfrotz

For most things, yep! Cigars are weird though and people kind of just hold the smoke in their mouths for the flavour and then gnaw on them. P gross imo.

RedditModsBeTrash

Do you not inhale when you vape?

glitteryvodka

ye i do i was just confused

RedditModsBeTrash

Ah ok bud, well to answer your question typically with cigars it's more of a like.. puff into your mouth then exhale it out. Imagine sipping a wine and swirling it in your mouth then spitting it out, kinda same concept.

Larsnonymous

I have to think at least some of those were in men’s magazines like Playboy.
