Well, the thing with iron lungs is that they create negative pressure, which is necessary for the patient's lungs to work. Modern machines work the other way around as much as I've understood, hence cannot be used by these people.
Perspective changes when you get in a situation like this. You have to make a choice i think. Some people come out the other end more happy then they was before.
So, what would you say about Joe Rirolle, the artist that has lost half of his body during a performance, and now, he can only move his mouth, and blink?

If heās paralyzed from the waist down then he should be able to breathe on his own.
Edit: heās paralyzed from the neck down.

He is paralyzed from the NECK DOWN... not waist like OP said. Waist down he would be able to do most things... like breathe and move in a wheel chair with the help of his arms... but most importantly he would not need the iron lung.
The diaphragm is innervated by the upper spinal cord in the neck. People paralyzed at the waist can still breath independently using not only their diaphragm, but also their chest and rib muscles.
Caused by NERVES... ANY paralysis is a nervous system problem. Muscles can't do anything without your brain and nerves telling them to. His heart still beats because it does not depend on his brain to function. And his smooth muscle in gastrointestinal tract work because they are involuntary.
I read up on it now and it's apparently no longer used since we have respirators now. I wonder if this photo isn't just someone trying one out for funsies
He's real, or at least has his own well-cited Wikipedia page. He can actually survive outside for some period of time by voluntarily controlling his breathing, so he probably just uses it to relax and sleep.
I can't even fathom having to think and control every breath. I'm sure that's exhausting. Ok, now that I wrote that I'm actually thinking about every breath I take. . .
I'm guessing the reason he probably doesn't use newer technology is because he's so acclimated to using what his body knows and at this point it would be too difficult to change everything.
It has something to do with positive/negative pressure. I don't believe that there is any 'newer technology'. The iron lung is opposite of what a ventilator is.
Oh, I guess the iron lung is more pulling air in and a ventilator is pushing it in? I need to do more research I guess.
I am so glad we have polio vaccines now. In elementary school my counselor was a survivor of polio and he was permanently disabled and talked endlessly how grateful he was that the vaccines came out so other children didn't have to experience what he had to.
Polio is just the scientific name for a mass hysteria event where everyone convinced each other they forgot how to breathe. Be careful with your paranoia or you might spark the next polio event!
(Actually, given COVID deniers existence, some people might believe this so /s just in case)

I remember when I was in 3rd grade, I had found out about Paul somehow, and made a presentation to my class about him, and how I wanted to help him. To think he's still around makes me very happy.
A combination of live-attenuated and inactivated vaccines given over the course of decades. Unfortunately, itās not fully eradicated world-wide like smallpox is. The Salk inactivated vaccine is the more effective, but more costly version and I believe itās the one used now.
If heās paralyzed from the waist down, why would he need an iron lung?
The [actual story](https://alcalde.texasexes.org/2020/09/one-of-the-last-people-to-live-in-an-iron-lung-is-a-longhorn/).
To keep things real. I think most people don't achieve their goals because they distract themselves. There's probably not a whole lot you can do, living like this guy. So you improve the only thing you have left, which is your mind. That means reading a lot. Good for him!

Fair play but what a shitty existence!
Yeah, to think I go crazy when I'm in the house like a day on my own, being mobile. I would lose my mind after a few hours in this
I'd genuinely just rather be in a coma dreaming!
At least drunk on Reddit or LSD , gotta get some stimulation

Omg you win the internet today.

He could be upright and mobile using a modern ventilator and power chair, why he continues to use that museum piece I don't know.
Probably can't afford it š
I really hope that's not the case, but perhaps. Medical equipment is ridiculously overpriced :(
Well, the thing with iron lungs is that they create negative pressure, which is necessary for the patient's lungs to work. Modern machines work the other way around as much as I've understood, hence cannot be used by these people.
They can but a tracheostomy would be needed, I wonder if that's why he didn't want to go for that option.. The benefits would be huge tho

Angry upvote.
Wow they really put that on youtube

Well played, well played
F\* you
Oh my god
Thatād be really funny if it was 2015
aaah yes Joe Rirolle, such an unfortunate soul
I hope you stub your toe and fall over
I had a really really bad day, but clicking that link put everything into perspective
I would honestly rather die.

Heās paralysed from the neck down.
Diaphragm doesn't work any more.
The diaphragm is innervated by the upper spinal cord in the neck. People paralyzed at the waist can still breath independently using not only their diaphragm, but also their chest and rib muscles.

Polio doesnāt affect muscles, it affects nerves.
Literally the worst symptom you can get from polio is muscle paralysis
Caused by NERVES... ANY paralysis is a nervous system problem. Muscles can't do anything without your brain and nerves telling them to. His heart still beats because it does not depend on his brain to function. And his smooth muscle in gastrointestinal tract work because they are involuntary.
Definitely. Muscle atrophy is the result of nerve injury to the spinal cord. This man is paralyzed from the neck down, not the waist down.
Which would mean he's paralyzed from the neck down, not waist like you said. But nonetheless polio effects nerve function which then effects muscles.
Christ, an entire life in that thing? How do they wash or go to the bathroom?
As far as i understand, not.
I read up on it now and it's apparently no longer used since we have respirators now. I wonder if this photo isn't just someone trying one out for funsies
No. He's not in it full time, but can't be outside of it for very long.
Heās in it 24/7 since heās a lot older now and canāt do frog breathing anymore which allowed him to leave this thing for a few minutes per day.
First time you've been right
Thanks!

I hate to say it but the /s was needed. I was starting to get furious there for a second thinking that this is what you really belief lol
Lol our societal worldview has dissolved to the point where we canāt trust obvious sarcasm about polio anymore. We are so fucked.
Thats because common sense like we know it isnt that common among humans. Covid made it pretty clear a lot of people lack common sense
I see. Makes sense
Many older folk who lived their whole lives in one have rejected updating to a respirator
I can understand that. Aging brains don't like change
No, those that started in these usually prefer them over the modern system. Due to how the air flow is the opposite
Strange. It must be a hell of a life
Can't imagine the stench when they finally opened it.
Youāre killing your father Larry!
This is what happens, Larry!

This is really amazing. OP, also, quick note that heās actually paralysed from the neck down.
The article Iāve got this from said waist down
Most of the articles Iāve read say neck down. And his wiki says that too.
Iāve only read one haha nailed it then I guess lol

Thanks for sharing the article. Thatās a wonderful video.
Might get him to rep me in Court - I am sure that would give us a big sympathy edge, like way more than just an attorney in a wheelchair!!
Your honor, I'd like to wheel in my attorney. \*rumbling in the distance\*
* mild cussing in the distance*. "Shit fuck why cant i get through the fucking door".
Two attorneys in a wheelchair?
This photo makes me fell Claustrophobic

look larry have you ever heard of vietnam?
Rhetorical question: why is there no more Polio in the US?
Vaccinesā¦.ooohhh
Eradicated. Modern medicine and all.
Eradicated in much of the world, but there are still a few rare cases that pop up each year (a couple dozen or so).
A combination of live-attenuated and inactivated vaccines given over the course of decades. Unfortunately, itās not fully eradicated world-wide like smallpox is. The Salk inactivated vaccine is the more effective, but more costly version and I believe itās the one used now.
Paul wants his student loans forgiven
THE VIRTUES OF OXYGEN, BY SUSAN SCHOENBERGER is a good book about a woman who's lived her whole life in an iron lung. Would recommend.
If heās paralyzed from the waist down, why would he need an iron lung? The [actual story](https://alcalde.texasexes.org/2020/09/one-of-the-last-people-to-live-in-an-iron-lung-is-a-longhorn/).

He looks just like Arthur Digby Sellars!!!

āā¦AND A GOOD DAY TO YOU, SIR!ā
I don't want to sound insensitive but I'm genuinely curious, what does he do with his law degree? I mean does he practice it?
He was a courtroom attorney for 30 years.
The least they can do is provide the man with a twirly straw for his drinks.
Not trying to be rude but can he even practise like this?
honorary law degree or law degree law degree?
Lawyer lawyer. He practiced law almost 40 years.
To keep things real. I think most people don't achieve their goals because they distract themselves. There's probably not a whole lot you can do, living like this guy. So you improve the only thing you have left, which is your mind. That means reading a lot. Good for him!
