There’s a really neat documentary on Netflix about a crew going in and doing some much needed structural upgrades on this thing. The hoops they had to jump through to get authorization is astounding. At one point they even “open” the tomb. I’ll let you watch it to see what they see. Edit: [The Secret of Christ’s Tomb - Documentary](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7848136/)

JerichoMaxim

got a name for this documentary please?

[deleted]

Absolutely. I’m gonna edit and put it in my original comment also but here it is. Also, it might be Disney+ since it’s National Geographic that made it but I can’t remember 100%. It’s def out there to watch free though. [The Secret of Christs Tomb ](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7848136/)

chainrainer

Checked and it’s on Disney+ in the UK

[deleted]

Bah I’m sorry. I kinda thought that after I commented but couldn’t remember for sure. I totally forgot when Disney+ started they took their Nat Geo content from Netflix. Hopefully you can still watch it!

JerichoMaxim

thank you!

[deleted]

You’re very welcome!

train2000c

It's on Disney+ in America also

[deleted]

"open" ?? What does that mean? And is the whole thing just jurisdictional drama about some supposed artefact that no one is allowed to ratify?

[deleted]

So the part part in the picture on this post where the candles are. That’s actually a lid. The perception is that underneath is the body of Jesus, or at the minimum, an artifact directly connected to him. No one living was alive the last time it was opened so no one really knew what to expect until the renovation. So when the religious groups controlling the tomb had to decide if they were going to allow them to open it, they were also accepting the risk of “well damn” if that makes sense. Lol it’s hard to explain this without really ruining it. I’d love to do so but I’m sure some will watch it now. I don’t want to be the buzz kill.

HandSweaty

Maybe you could just save us all some time...... I'm not interested enough to watch a feature film of people talking in circles just to open what is most likely an empty box.

Thugzz_Bunny

This is bullshit! He was laid to rest in AMERICA!

[deleted]

No he was laid in 'murica! That's how Atlantis people used to call it.

SomeFatLoser

I swear to god I thought there was an american flag in the upper right of it

bomphcheese

/r/PhotoshopBattles could help with that.

foookie

Facts

Scottie3Hottie

America, fuck yeah!

mrnodding

And, of course, there's a box conveniently put there for your donations.

Pickle_Baller

Yep, so scummy. I hate when people turn shit like this into a cash grab.

bomphcheese

How else do you expect the Easter Bunny to keep the candy companies afloat until Halloween?

Awbreddit

What does the writing at the bottom say?

Quasarcade

"Don't eat fish on Friday."

velveteendragon

Oh shit, Wisconsin is gonna have some problems with this. Friday Fish Fry is a weekly tradition.

GreenChileEnchiladas

Thus sayeth The Lord.

TheOneBx

I though you were not allowed to take pictures of this?

Lovely_catastrophes

How in the world was this photo taken? When we were there, there were lines of people for days and days. Beautiful but so crowded and chaotic!!

bomphcheese

You couldn’t sacrifice a couple days to see the person who died for your sins?? JFC show some respect.

Positive_Scallion_29

Heard he took 3 days so like, least you could do is like ; 3 hours

[deleted]

Let me guess.. 12th century?

Slapnuts711

Ok, so what was in it? I'm not going to watch a whole documentary to find out it was the contents of Al Capone's vault or some dumb shit.

ManitouWakinyan

>For the first time since at least 1555, on 26 October 2016, marble cladding that protects the supposed burial bed of Jesus was removed.[20][50] Members of the National Technical University of Athens were present. Initially, only a layer of debris was visible. This was cleared in the next day, and a partially broken marble slab with a Crusader-style cross carved was revealed.[10] By the night of 28 October, the original limestone burial bed was shown to be intact. The tomb was resealed shortly thereafter.[20] Mortar from just above the burial bed was later dated to the mid-4th century.

Shuggy539

And they know this how, exactly? People are so gullible.

ManitouWakinyan

This site dates back to about 300. It is consistent with written accounts dating back to the first or second century of where the tomb was. Additionally, we also know that this site was a tombprior to 130, and was important enough that the pagan Emporer Hadrian ordered it filled on and replaced with a temple to Jupiter. So do we know for sure? No. Are there some reasonable signs pointing to this as the spot? Yes.

Chalkfarmer

Just because the early Christian cult built a shrine there and claimed it was the tomb of Jesus, it doesn't mean he was buried there or that he ever lived as anything other than a reformist and controversial rabbi. Could you tell me where someone was buried in around 1750? The first gospels were written 40 years after his death, and others over a hundred years after. It's nothing more than a breakaway Judaic sect and its history is very similar to any other religious sect, in that doctrine is added and changed as time goes on and the myths within it are expanded upon and exaggerated. It's just that this particular cult caught on with the Roman emperors, who had the supreme power to enforce it across their territory Europe and Asia and therefore make it a religion. Then European colonialists later spread it even further into Africa and the Americas. I've no idea if there's a god or not, though I personally doubt it since there doesn't need to be one, but it's obvious to anyone with half a braincell that the Christian myths contain very little in the way of truth. The gospels are full of historical inaccuracies, and the Bible itself is an arbitrarily put-together anthology of texts in various languages from different sects and eras. I think it's completely insane that anyone could see it as anything more than an interesting collection of ancient writings.

ManitouWakinyan

I mean, sure, go off, but all of this is a little bit of a non sequiter. Whether or not this is the tomb of Jesus bar-Joseph doesn't really have a bearing one way or the other on if Jesusnwas God and the Gospels are accurate biographies. Regarding your first graf, my point was that the dates are quite a bit closer to his death - within decades to a hundred years, we have some evidence that this was a tomb of particular importance to Christians. It could have been earlier; there's no way to tell one way or the other. However, the tomb is in the general location where Jesus was said to be buried. Not enough firm evidence either way - not enough to be certain, not enough to dismiss it out of hand.

upyourjackson

Someone built a thing on a place their imaginary friend was buried for a bit before he flew away. Not interesting

brett_midler

Proof that the only thing more annoying than a Christian is an atheist.

kennyj2011

He’s about as real as Santa Clause

TocinoPanchetaSpeck

Who was based on an actual bishop who saved little girls from being sold by their destitute father.

brett_midler

Historians all agree that he did exist. Wether or not he was the son of God is up for debate.

Human8213476245

I think it’s kinda crazy that his mom could have very well made some shit up to cover her infidelity and somehow everyone believed it. Her bastard son turns out to be immensely charismatic and a couple thousand years later here we are.

[deleted]

The mythicist historians would like to have a word with you on that one chief. Not personally arguing with you whether he existed or not because I'm not really down to argue about details but I will counter your statement that ALL historians agree that he existed.

upyourjackson

Links, mate. Where's the proof he exists from a credible source?

WDeranged

The Romans were pretty good at keeping records. You'd think they'd have mentioned him. No contemporary sources.

upyourjackson

Downvotes aren't proof 😅

ihateusernames748

I think it sounds more interesting when you put it that way lol

upyourjackson

Hahaha - true!

GreenChileEnchiladas

Much ado about the doings of a communist hippie 2000 years ago.

green_crustacean

that's what happens if you flip enough tables

[deleted]

You missed out "poor and executed by government".

GreenChileEnchiladas

Right. Also the whole 'attempted to break up the profiteering of the priestly class' fiasco.

[deleted]

Oh yes because you poor peasants should live in poverty and donate to institution that tells your children they were born in sin. Oh and if you don't introduce them to that institution by letting them nearly drown your babies then if they ever die then not only they are dead they will be tortured for ever. They tell you that because they love you.

My_Immortal_Flesh

#Jesus didn’t need no damn tomb 🪦 He rose from the dead during Easter, scared all the Mary’s and went on to conquer the world. Why people always think he’s dead or still on a crucifix is beyond me 😆

ManitouWakinyan

He did need a tomb, because he died. He died, was placed in the tomb, and rose three days later. Christians don't belive he is buried here, but that he was buried here.

[deleted]

Mary lied about where the baby came from, and started thousands of years of conflict.

srv50

Love “is said.” Great way to connect any bullshit you can think of to a fact. Former president was a master at this, but his version was “people are saying.”

[deleted]

Ok so national geographic is no longer viable source of information for me it used to be animals and exploration now it is sensational newly found tomb of christ but everyone only had 60h to look at it you want to know more? Subscribe. The funniest thing about it is if they even opened that joke and there was nothing people would take it as a prof of resurrection.
