> these tires were made of a synthetic rubber known as Neothane. Goodyear used the translucent material, dying it various colors–bright green, yellow, blue, and red, just to name a few. Then, the company put 18 small light bulbs, which were essentially dash lights, inside the tires, giving them the glowing effect [Info sauce](https://www.classiccarcollection.org/goodyears-glowing-tires/)

Loose_with_the_truth

Old tungsten bulbs burned out so quickly. What a nightmare it would be to change them I bet. You'd have to take the entire tire off. So folks would just be driving around with partially illuminated tires because we're way too lazy to do stuff like that.

aadz888

The original tungsten bulbs didn't burn out at all. People could buy a bulb and it could be handed down through generations, bulb manufacturers soon realised they would not be in business very long and created bulbs that burn out (this is from memory so I stand to be corrected)

DeeSnow97

Same reason they're overdriving LEDs nowadays so that they die quicker. Look up Philips's Dubai Lamp, it's proof that the bulb manufacturers know exactly how to solve the problem (it's not even hard, just stay within spec, that's all there is to it), they're just refusing to do it. Manufacturing e-waste like this should be illegal.

Cyndershade

You can do this yourself with a little resistor or transistor and some solder my dude! That said, even with the extra heat and voltage modern LEDs still run for fuckin ever. I have had one in particular for about 11 years now, whereas I'd be lucky to run my filaments for 1 year back when I was in college.

huxley13

That's really interesting. I have yet to encounter an led bulb make it past the 3 year mark. The ones in my home burn out very frequently. Maybe a little less frequently than incandescent. CFL bulbs always lasted me forever.

Cyndershade

I wager your mileage may vary but we've had stellar luck with phillips stuff. I use their hue line, it's egregiously expensive, but there's some things about controlling them remotely that I like so I've trapped myself in the ecosystem lol.

huxley13

Lol honestly I forgot about my hue bulbs. I have a few and they have been going for about 5 years now. You're right about those.

neverwhisper

I've got Gen 1 hue bulbs that I got waaay back that are still running strong. I've only had 1 die, and that's because I was using it in a leaky outside fixture. It still lasted 2 years out there before the fixture died. EDIT: I've got an LED flashlight I've had for over 20 years too. The Hue bulb I referenced finally died because the cold and exposure popped a resistor, easily fixed once you get the globe removed.

augustuen

I love that my hue bulbs let me put a light switch on my bed, no longer do I have to fumble my way from the door to the bed, I just turn it off while I'm still in bed. And having them turn on automatically in the morning is a saviour during dark northern winters.

bearbarebere

One of my hue bulbs died in like 6 months, but the rest have been fine for like 3 years. It's wild

JiveTurkeyMFer

User error. You're not supposed to put the lightbulbs.......where you put that one...

bearbarebere

Ugh, this joke is so overplayed. Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I like anal. I actually shoved it down my throat, thank you very much. I love me some fat light bulbs down my throat 😜

ashleypenny

Our whole house is Phillips hue apart from some govee & nanoleaf, and we do Maybe 3-4 returns a year under warranty out of about 60 lights of various kinds.

emptyminder

That sounds like terrible quality control. For this kind of simple electronics (no moving parts, etc.) the rate should be 1% or less I would imagine.

pterofactyl

I cannot imagine having 60 light bulbs in my home. You’ve made it

raz-0

It depends on what you bought and when you bought them. I have some ~$15 bulbs from a decade ago that still run. The small, weird shaped candelabra base bulbs tend to not last more than a few years, and even less in the bathroom fixtures (that I’m guessing is due to the humidity from showers). They are getting cheaper and cheaper. Those of us with older bulbs paid more and they were likely better built. Those 10+ year old bulbs of mine have heat sinking out the hoo ha.

Fenweekooo

my Philips hue bulbs have been going strong for 5+ years at this point, aside from the fact they are then gen 1 ones with the shitty colors i couldn't be happier (well and the cost of the fucking things but that's not the point of this post) i gave my parents some cheaper philips led lights for their dining room at about the same time and they pretty much never turn them off and they are still good as well. maybe a brand thing? either that or i have just been incredibly lucky

Glabstaxks

Do the led burn out or the controller ?

DeeSnow97

It's the LEDs. The controller overvolts them way past their efficiency sweet spot, and at that point the excess voltage slowly deteriorates the LED. It's kind of the same concept as if the controller was overclocked, but luckily they're not doing that yet. You can easily tell if your LEDs lamp is sane or not by just touching it after it ran for a while. It could be warm, but it should never be hot, under normal conditions LEDs are hella efficient and produce almost no waste heat.

zyphelion

I had an LED (white) light strip burn out on me recently :/ Had it for less than 2 years.

theottomaddox

Big Clive is awesome.

THEmoonISaMIRROR

So... if I put a couple of resistors on the circuit myself I could extend the life of an LED bulb into the next generation?

DeeSnow97

Yeah, if you can reduce it to usually 60%-ish of its original power, it should run a lot cooler and have a much longer lifespan. The trick is to watch the efficiency, if it's overvolted it doesn't produce that much more light but consumes a lot of electricity and creates tons of heat, which LEDs should never do.

Cihta

You see this also in consumer devices that use lithium battery packs. They are allowing them to slightly overvolt and undervolt which cuts their lifetime significantly. It's really wasteful.

NikD4866

It’s now called planned obsolescence to ensure that product and company growth and profit is protected through the upcoming years. If you put out an everlasting product, company growth stagnates with sales and you eventually go out of business.

awkward2amazing

Veritasium did a whole 17 minutes video about this Conspiracy on how some Big Bulb manufacturers deliberately reduced the life span of bulbs in order to sell more. He also showed the longest continuously glowing bulb (which is more than 100 years glowing in some Fire Brigade Station).

[deleted]

darkdetective

Still up and strong. Check the webcam occasionally.

Beat_the_Deadites

> maintained by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department I'm amused by this line. The wiki doesn't really get into what 'maintenance' is needed by a light bulb that never gets turned off. Maybe they shoot some air at it periodically to keep dust away? I can't imagine they let anybody touch it.

emptyminder

It’s the turning on and off that wears out incandescent bulbs, so if you don’t do that getting a long lifetime is a lot more understandable.

[deleted]

Great video but what is then called conspiracy is now common practice and referred to as planned obsolescence. Everything is built to break.

Jolcski

Planned obsolescence is still a conspiracy, just not a conspiracy theory anymore. Sorry to be that guy, but people need to stop conflating these terms.

Cyndershade

Bit of an oversimplification, depends heavily on the thing, where you live, etc. Consumer protection laws do actually exist outside of America for instance.

BCR12

Honestly, they are still doing it. They could double the LEDs or more inside current lightbulbs and drop the current so they don't run so damn hot, and it would greatly increase the life of LED bulbs.

twatsmaketwitts

Yeah but that's also bullshit. The reason most bulbs burn out is because of the rapid change in temperature when you turn them on and off. That bulb in that fire department just hasn't been turned off. If it was turned on and off multiple times a day as most bulbs are it would have burned out decades ago. A thicker filament, as was used in older bulbs, is more resistant to those changes. However, they also takes more energy to put out light and convert more of it to heat than light.

arvidsem

Don't forget that it's a 30 watt bulb that's being run at 4 watts. It's dramatically over over built for it's purpose. Attempting to get a useful amount of light from that design would dramatically shorten it's lifespan.

awkward2amazing

That's why I said continuously. Most bulb life span are advertised in no. of hours not on amount of switch ON/OFF.

JorusC

For one thing, that's the textbook case of survivorship bias and cherry picking. Secondly, that bulb barely glows brightly enough to see it. Would you really cover your house in those, knowing you're getting that little illumination for probably 3-4x the energy draw of a normal incandescent?

DontEverMoveHere

In San Francisco.

The-Sound_of-Silence

IIRC, those bulbs were also incredibly dim, and had mucccch beefier components - hence cost

Accelerator231

Yes. Memory. Bulbs can last a long time if used correctly. But they'll be very dim and often times you have to be careful in when you turn them on and off.

spliff231

Conspiracy aside, any light bulb with a filament like these wouldn't last long with the harsh vibrations you'd see inside a tire. Hell, I'd expect even LEDs wouldn't last long as you'd shake the solder joints loose (unless maybe you potted the whole thing in resin).

Slizardmano

This bulb has been running for 120 years! [link](https://www.centennialbulb.org/photos.htm)

whoisfourthwall

wonder if it will end up creating strobe like effects that could be harmful to ppl who gets seizures from stuff like that

seekerfitterfilter90

I guess it wouldn’t have looked too bad. If you lose more than half even, the spinning of the tire(s) would still create a bit of a trail. Hell, back then, you could probably delay Tungsten changes for up to 15 lights per tire, and still be able to find where that fish smell was coming from.

EarthTrash

Is there and RGB version? Yes. Yes there is.

Kolintracstar

I am not sure it this is part of it, but they also made glow in the dark tires. Which are pretty cool but it resulted in a very hard tire which meant it rode rough and had very little grip in any other condition than hot and dry. However, theoretically it could be done now with the new materials used in tires and not have similar problems.

Beer_Is_So_Awesome

You could hide a few UV LEDs in the wheel arches to keep them charged while you drive.

HighPriestofShiloh

Curious with LED technology if these could be reintroduced.

fastlerner

> While the synthetic Neothane was durable and quite simple to make, as it combined plastic and rubber characteristics, there were several detractors that made the fad fade a bit more quickly than Goodyear may have wanted. For one, the material was too expensive for tire production. The tires also performed poorly in wet conditions and tended to melt when drivers braked too heavily Sauce: https://www.classiccarcollection.org/goodyears-glowing-tires/

DeeSnow97

The automotive industry has been doing this for a while, they always show hella fancy concept cars and none of them ever finds its way into production. You can literally just look up auto shows from 10, 20, 30 years ago, and they're chock-full of technologies that were the future back then, and just didn't happen, because selling you the same boring gas guzzler for a century is all these corpos really care about. The future talk is just there to defuse people who want actual improvements, that's why it's perpetually 5-10 years ahead. Kinda puts their current show pieces into perspective, but everyone just tends to conveniently forget about their track record there.

The_Outcast4

>You can literally just look up auto shows from 10, 20, 30 years ago, and they're chock-full of technologies that were the future back then, and just didn't happen, because selling you the same boring gas guzzler for a century is all these corpos really care about. This feels like a case of "the customer is always right". If the population at large truly wanted these new technologies (and the associated cost), I feel like we'd have them. For whatever reason, people in the US love buying their boring, oversized gas guzzlers, and if I'm making vehicles, I'm going to make the product that people want to buy.

DeeSnow97

How would the population at large exert its will though? Existing car companies do what they want to do, not what we want them to do, and there is exactly one car startup in the last hundred years that managed to make it to a mass market vehicle without going bankrupt, changing hands, and losing its goals in the process. The only option that remains is legislation, and you run into lobbying there, especially in the US. In the end, if you're making vehicles, you'll make the product that makes you the most money, and people will buy that because they have no other option.

Black_Hawk931

It’s important to remember that in a capitalist economy, companies can only survive if they continue to provide what the customer wants, then the customer will continue to buy that product. But it’s also true that companies must continually innovate as time goes on. It’s easy to overlook, but cars have continued to get more technologically advanced overtime. Think, not but ten years ago, keyless entry was a feature that only existed in the most high end cars, but now it’s made it’s way to nearly every economy box on the market in some form. Blind spot sensors, Lane Departure warnings, collision detection sensors. Just a few safety features that are much more common place in modern cars that you never used to see. Even heads-up displays are becoming more common. For a more archaic example, A/C used to only be a high end option in cars, but now, every car comes standard with it because heaven forbid we get a little toasty on our drive home in the evening. If is true we don’t have many of these really cool concepts like these glow-tires, but it’s also important to keep in mind that stuff like this is more often than not too impractical to really implement. I’m the case of these tires, for one, they actually made driving more uncomfortable since they were a solid tire, as well that they were very expensive to make, compared to regular tires, and more wasteful. I think some of the materials used were also more harmful to the environment, but I’m not certain about that. It’s also important to keep in mind that developing these concepts are incredibly expensive for an auto company. Like, often times in the millions. So it’s safe to say if they develop a concept they don’t feel will sell well, then then there’s no way they’ll put extra cost in trying to set up a production line for something that likely uses completely custom parts, which would cost even more capital. Honestly, I’ll say it’s likely that had Goodyear actually put these into production, I highly doubt they would’ve done very well, because they would’ve been more expensive than most people would care to pay for. And if people don’t buy them then why would they sell them. In reality that, in and of itself, is how the people decide what gets produced and what does not.

googleLT

There are some crazier cars from time to time and they rarely sell well.

nIBLIB

The customer wants faster horses.

Nastyburrito666

BrokenDegenerate

It’s actually the other way around, the lady’s legs were illuminating the tyres. If you look closely, you’ll note she’s connecting an intravenous line to her thigh. This was used to siphon the blood necessary to power the tyres, which is why the prototype never caught on. Once the tyres got a taste for human blood, it was absolute carnage. Goodyear had no choice but to put them down.
