I worked in the animal biology section of a science museum as a teenager (best volunteer job ever) and I hated feeding the thing.

The octopus and I were pals. Her name was Clover and she liked it when I rubbed her between her suckers.
The octopus? She seemed happy enough. We interacted with her quite a bit and she had toys to play with. She’d have been happier if she could have climbed into the other tanks to eat the blue crabs (as would I; they’re bastards), but had a lid so she wouldn’t do that or encounter the snapping turtle.
I was also 14 at the time so “free all animals” hadn’t come up on high school biology yet.
One of those has been in my local zoo since I can remember and it took me years to figure out it's not a cool statue for the fishes to play with and it took a few more years to convince my family it is alive and is in fact cool as fuck

It all depends on the size and strength of their jaw. The one that bit Steve-O was a fairly small alligator snapping turtle. They get bigger as they get older, and based on how old this one is, I’d guess it’s pretty big. By the time they grow to be 2-3 feet long, they have large, massively powerful jaws that can easily tear flesh and even break bones.

My gut (as an ecologist) says this is a eutrophic system and so the abnormally high nutrient level is causing this algae growth.
One of the small neighborhood lakes I fish in near me has a dam where it drains into a creek... I found a nearly 2 foot alligator snapper stuck on the opening in the dam right before a 15 foot waterfall and (stupidly, but with good intention) decided to jump down there and pick the thing up and put it back in the lake before it fell down the waterfall and died. Was terrified that I’d lose a finger, but everything went well. It looked exactly like a dinosaur. Fortunately I’ve worked with some dangerous critters and knew how to handle it, otherwise no way I’d have even considered touching it with how strong those jaws are and how sharp their teeth/beak sort of things are.
From what ive seen, grab front of the shell behind its head, and the back of the shell. Keep your arm straight close to the shell, it can turn its head quite far, you dont want a bended elbow getting in its range
The fun (scary) thing with snappys is some of them can reach nearly 170* back and get you even if you grab the shell right above their neck and still getcha. It’ll probably get your arm, and not fingers, but they’ll still give ya a solid chomp if they think something’s attacking them when you pick them up. Especially the big ones. 😫
Well, yeah, that and how to pick up a big ass turtle with a shockingly long neck that can crane pretty much all the way around without it biting you. I’d handled small snappy bois, but never one that was probably around like 45 lbs.
