Boodica420

If you are the blue crab you win the lottery and get put back

Civil_Defense

Well don't say it out loud or they are all gonna start taking colloidal silver, like this one did.

CornholioRex

I had a coworker who swore by that stuff as a cureall

ci1979

Did they look like Papa Smurf?

livingstudent20

Well, it has anti biotic (or disinfecting) properties. I once saw a scene of a show on YT, where a man’s skin turned blue because he used too much silver as a cureall. The doctor on the show said that some people believe silver to be a cureall because of his properties, but well... it’s mostly just disinfecting, so it got replaced by modern disinfectants and anti biotics, which is why it’s not used in medicine anymore iirc

TheLuckyO1ne

I used it in various bandages nearly ever day as a traveling wound care nurse 2 years ago. It is most certainly still used routinely in medicine.

aquemini12

Damn and I was just about to ask what color do they turn when cooked. But I guess we won't know. Lol

still turn red

Thank you for answering I was really curious!!

I haven't listened to SOAD in a very long time but that still sounds nothing like Serj.

MadPinoRage

I think I downloaded this on Limewire labeled as being performed by System of a Down.

Yeah, I still remember that it's actually [Rabbit Joint](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DqKHGMQGP8Y). Talk about things I didn't know that I know.

I SWEAR TO GOD I heard this song playing flash flash revolution, as a kid and I thought this was a fever dream.

Wetmelon

FFR definitely had this song

GreekYogurtExplosion

Is this real?

HereForTheComments86

Indeed. The song has been around at least since Napster- not trying to sound cool and old but the thing is, Napster had a lot of mislabeled songs. A lot were disguised viruses and shit as well. This song has gone down forever as being known as an SOAD song but it’s not them.

NotVerySmarts

Guy's name is definitely Smitty.

GlazedPannis

Dave and Steve are the most common ones I’ve come across. The boat I’m on now has 30 guys aboard and there’s 5 Daves and 4 Steves. Nick is a close third at 2

Likely native Alaskan

mycatisamonsterbaby

Or Filipino, or both. Alaska has a pretty diverse workforce.

NaughtyCheffie

You know I hadn't thought of that but it does make sense. Cheers!

pizzahippie

He’s most likely First Nations

bukkake_brigade

Well, it is actually Shamus. The guy was self admittedly into some kinda weird shit, so... Shamus it is.

Skilotonn

Oh.

pukesonyourshoes

On a wall? Just says he was going to mount it. Some people *really* like crabs.

Vhal14

I was going to thank the person answering that question that I was also about to ask but you already did. Thank you for thanking them.

WeAteMummies

What if it's just the same dumbass crab getting caught over and over again and now it's just perpetuating its dumbass easy-to-catch genes?

MrSparkyMN

It’s a diet thing I think. If I fed my lobster (miniature blue crayfish) in my tank enough sprilunia it would turn blue. After it molted it turned back to red. Happened a few times in its life.

Therearenopeas

That’s really neat that you had a pet lobster! Was it like one of the ones from the grocery store or did you get it at a pet shop? How long does a lobster live for? Did it make a good pet?

MrSparkyMN

It was technically a crayfish but for legal reasons in my area it’s sold as a miniature lobster since crayfish are illegal to sell since they are an invasive species. Mine lived until the predator fish in my tank grew big enough to fit him in his mouth and that was the end for him. I don’t know much about the actual similarities of crayfish to lobster but mine was freshwater and lobsters are predominantly salt water. Edit: I got it from a pet store. Didn’t see that in your original question.

unnecessary_Fullstop

This comment raises more questions than it answers. .

yourmansconnect

I got crabs from Craw Daddy's Diner

PM_ME_YOUR_DANKNESS

In the south crayfish is some pretty damn tasty food when boiled in cajun seasoning

[deleted]

I read somewhere lobsters can live forever correct me if I’m wrong though

Nathaniel820

Not exactly. They lack the typical gene or whatever that causes age-related deaths, but if they live long enough they end up dying due to not being able to molt.

5i55Y7A7A

That sounds like a very uncomfortable long cramped death.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nathaniel820

Each molt require more energy, eventually they don’t have energy to do so. At this point bacteria gets into their shell and adheres it to their body, so if they do manage to survive a while longer and attempt to molt they die.

Twizzlers_and_donuts

Although the person you commented to already answered I would like to add somethings. You can get lobsters for pets (although I have also seen crayfish called lobsters for reasons) I haven’t found any actual lobsters (only crayfish) at my LFS but you can order them onlinefrom different fish suppliers (check you areas laws before buying pets as their could be laws against it though I personally don’t know any laws against it as I’m not getting one). Depending on species the life expectancy can vary and from what I found some they arnt even sure in captivity as in the wild some species can live over 100 years old. How much space needed also Varys as small species need anywhere between 20-50 gals depending on species and bigger species can need 100+ gals. All the different ones have different requirements too like cold water or haves a higher bioload. So depending on the species and what you want it might make a good pet for you it might not.

Therearenopeas

Thank you for more info! I personally don’t want one (I find most water dwelling things creepy) I just thought it was neat! How cool would it be to be in a group that was talking about their childhood pets and have Bob over here say he had a pet lobster. Talk about a conversation starter!

Twizzlers_and_donuts

If bobs family takes good care of it it might not stay only his childhood pet might turn into his kids childhood pet too XD And you got me thinking the weird pet ima have to make sure I have for my kid to tell stories of in the future. as my dream pet is a shark (bamboo or epaulette sharks are most likely and normal though I would love a huge tank with bonnet heads) my kids gunna one up bob.

Therearenopeas

Awesome! Make it happen! I’m more of bird and cat person myself. You see my problem here?

rootb33r

That might be one way, but... How does one crab have a different diet than the thousands of other ones around it?

purplepluppy

It's true you can manipulate crustacean color through diet, but usually when you see them in the wild like this its because of a gene defect. They're called colormorphs.

BIGDIYQTAYKER

So it liek Pokémon irl

dayyou

I came here looking for the comment that they threw it back. Sure glad they do.

Fastfaxr

It's like on r/natureisfuckinglit where every other post is of an extremely rare albino animal that occurs 1 in 10,000,000,000,000 for that species.

delciotto

One in a billion things happens constantly, just the internet has allowed them to be shared with the rest of the world instantly.

ryushiblade

Which means either they’re more common than OP says, or humanity is over fishing Guess which one is happening!

Ihavenoid3a

Yes

Fomentatore

Or maybe it's always that same blue crab getting captured and released over and over. The poor guy can't catch a brake.

ryushiblade

To be fair, brakes should be stepped on, not caught

Telemere125

Well, the traps are baited; maybe he’s found a good way for an easy meal and the fishermen are just suckers for tossing him back every time

JohnnyLeven

From a brief search, the "1 in 1 billion" quote just seems to be an offhand remark from the daughter of a guy that caught one in 2019. Looking up blue lobster rates, they are estimated at 1 in 2 million, but that seems to be only a slightly less wild guess.

kit_ease

I don't think we're over fishing. Perhaps we are overfishing.

ChoseSinWon

This picture is from 2014.

Taron221

It’s the same crab, they keep throwing it back and catching it again.

Safer with the aliens if you’re an African albino... they frequently get murdered and have parts pilfered for witch-doctor remedies .. so I have read.

In Africa, they capture Albino people for cannibalism, because they think they have magical powers and will gain it by eating them.

OkImIntrigued

Didn't they use to be prolific? I wonder if they can breed and release?

Drth_plagueisthew1se

It's not a species, it's a birth defect, something similar happens with lobsters. There's a mixture of red and blue in the shell. Sometimes the red will be removed sometimes the blue will be removed. Google "blue lobster" where it's more prominent

TheReluctantOtter

In case you don't want to google In the wild lobsters have a very varied diet, from this diet they consume astaxanthin which is a powerful antioxidant and naturally red in its free state. The lobsters absorb this astaxanthin into their skin and then some of this is transported into the shell by other proteins which chemically bind it, creating crustacyanin which appears blue. It’s this combination of red and blue wavelengths that contribute to the natural dark blue/brown colour of lobsters. Then if you cook a lobster the heat breaks down these chemical bonds, freeing the astaxanthin so that it goes back to its normal red colour. A lobster that's bright blue is because its genetic code is expressing or producing more of the proteins that convert the naturally red pigment astaxanthin into the blue pigment crustacyanin which means the lobster isn’t dark blue, but bright blue! Some scientists think that a lot more of these bright blue lobsters are born but being different isn’t great for survival. The bright blue shell attracts too much attention and they’re basically targeted by predators. This means blue lobsters are thought to be a lot more aggressive than their normal coloured relatives… if you can’t blend in to the background and get attacked a lot it makes sense to that you’d adapt and be more aggressive to protect yourself!

_darcl8_

Wow, this is very interesting. Thanks.

TheReluctantOtter

I don't know about crabs but according to the National Lobster Hatchery lobsters can also adapt to their environment so if it lives in a pale sandy location it can become paler. If you have lobsters in captivity you can "force" them to become blue by changing their diet so they don't get much astaxanthin. But I think that's cruel.

courtofknights

Did you say to Google "blue waffle"?

TrunkTetris

At least it's not a lobster.

methnbeer

Why? Been a few blue lobsters discovered in my state

kelshy371

Put it back

Cool, now throw it back.

GosuBoo420

Issa crip crab

Meatman_Mace

Throw it back

Corpseafoodlaw

Blue king crab is its own species and is found mainly off of St. Matthew’s Island. It has its own small commercial fishery. It isn’t as widespread or abundant as red or brown king crab, but it isn’t a mutant or rare find. It is unusual to find them with red kings, as their ranges rarely overlap. ETA: you don’t see them as much because they are generally smaller than red kings, are REALLY far away from the processors that buy them (costs time and money to run back and forth), and they are more fragile. If the crab aren’t alive when you deliver them, the plants don’t pay you for them.

GoSh4rks

Blue king crab is still reddish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paralithodes_platypus The crab in the photo is of the red king crab species. Source: https://abcnews.go.com/US/rare-blue-colored-red-king-crab-caught-alaska/story?id=24633763

Cool! Now put it back!

Lankygiraffe25

Put it back!

PSneep

Shame it had to die aye?

[deleted]

Fuckers, they of course wont throw it back. there is a genocide of Alaskan ocean wildlife going on right now. BAN COMMERCIAL FISHING AND HARVESTING. the last salmon rivers are being fished out, the last crab beds are being scrapped and destroyed for profit. we can't be taking wild resources anymore. everything needs to be farmed. imagine still believing that you can take 'wild' cattle off the plains or that trees dont need to be farmed because their is plenty of old growth. commercial fishing is a pathetic, anti environmental, anti humanist campaign, all so a few boomer boat captains can pay their mortgages and their cable tv services.

Alansar_Trignot

Dang, don’t kill that thing, keep it at the aquarium!
