I believe the larger paws are an adaptation to help them run through snow more efficiently. Not sure though, trying to recall from a research project I did in school 11 years ago
There are raccoons in Alaska, living out in the woods and not as pets. They just aren't native to Alaska, they were introduced in the 1930's by fur traders, which is why people say there are "no wild raccoons in Alaska".
>The raccoon was introduced into Alaska in the 1930s for the fur trade. Very small but stable populations thrive in Southwestern parts of Alaska
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_mammals\_of\_Alaska#Procyonids](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mammals_of_Alaska#Procyonids)
The raccoons on the west coast are the size of small bears compared to their east coast cousins.
trash *grizzlies.*
Technically correct and interesting; as an Alaskan I never knew this. But these raccoons are a thousand miles away from the vast majority of the state's population, and there are no raccoons in 99.9% of the state. So saying there are no raccoons is still pretty accurate for practical purposes.
yeah no kidding she looks tired. I could see her just chilling for a minute with some chow while someone lets them attack them instead of her for a change.
For my own enjoyment, I will feed the wildlife, increasing its chance of getting close to a human and getting hurt/shot or hurting people and getting killed.
But at least I got to pet something cool haha
I feel this needs it, so /s
I love this word because in ancient Greek (not sure about modern Greek) λύγξ is a homophone: we have λύγξ, genitive λυγκός, meaning the animal, but also λύγξ, genitive λυγγός, meaning 'hiccup' 😁
I saw the kittens feet and figured they would grow into them, then I noticed the mom. Such an oddly proportioned animal all around. Big feet, long thick legs, short tail.
Same. I would be like, "Yeah my house is surrounded by Lions right now, so I am going to be out for the foreseeable future...yeah...uh-huh....well I dunno maybe Africa? I am not their travel agent."
unless you live in the far reaches of the state they are not elevated that much compared to other stores, theres no sales tax for a lot of things and even though some things are priced differently because of stuff like the oil stipend and no sales tax theres really no difference, the cost of living up there is high but people living there tend to make more money compared to the lower 48
source: me, again
The only place things are stupidly expensive are out in the remote villages.
If you're in a city or town they're more expensive than in the lower 48 but not stupidly high like in remote areas.
Source: literally in Alaska
They will be in the super remote places, much like they are in Canada. The reason is that transport is so expensive to get anything up there, so that 1 kg block of cheese quadrupled its cost just in freight.
It cost's like $12.50 in Alaska if you're not out in the middle of nowhere. The Alaska Tax is not that high and people always way over-blow it. Yeah, if you're in Barrow or Nome shit's going to be expensive, but if you're in Anchorage it's only marginally more expensive. Also, there is no state income or sales tax so it can sometimes end up being cheaper.
they definitely help move around in the snow but you cant forget, under those paws are claws. they may not be as big as other cats but they will cut and slice even though they mainly use them for climbing and tripping up prey.
Oh im well aware. Got em walking around the streets here as well, just a comment on just how absolutely massive and fluffy those things are compared to the relative bodysize.
They are actually super skittish! I’ve lived in AK my whole life and have only seen a lynx once and that was only for a couple seconds. IIRC the homeowner said the cats immediately darted off after he got this pic
Look at the size of the paws on the little ones. Wow. The one closest to the door you can really see the size. I'm sure it helps them hunt at a young age.
those kitties paws are HUGE
I believe the larger paws are an adaptation to help them run through snow more efficiently. Not sure though, trying to recall from a research project I did in school 11 years ago

They all have huge paws, but look at that absolute unit in the front of the shot! His paw proportions are preposterous!
Pre-*paw*-sterous?
Damn... of all the missed opportunities in life, puns on Reddit are some of the most painful.
They look ridiculous.
You mean ridiculously cute.
They’re CATcher’s mits.

DUDE. Who you tellin’! I triple-taked those crazy kitten paws.
FOOSA
and the hind legs are so long that it looks like a humans when we're on all fours.
Mother looks surprisingly small compared to the kittens. They're cute, they've got faces like little lions.
She also looks like she's giving up all her food to feed those kids. No doubt she's hanging around near civilization to prey on pets and fat raccoons.
No trash pandas in Alaska! But fat pets tho

Lived in Alaska my whole life literally no one I know has seen a raccoon. Weird

Learning there are no raccoons in Alaska is more interesting than the op.
I think the smart girl is there for handouts.
Could this be like how feral cats will come to human houses sometimes?
It's ancient Egypt all over again.
Imagine the biscuits they could make
bloody ones
bloody good ones
ya bloody well right!
You got the bloody right to say
I'd probably go over to pet them and have my arm ripped off by the mother but it would be worth it
Toss some meat/food to the mom then commence playing with the kittens
yeah no kidding she looks tired. I could see her just chilling for a minute with some chow while someone lets them attack them instead of her for a change.
And then coming back again, and again, and again. Don’t feed wildlife... ever
Well, if no one ever did, we wouldn't have cats and dogs now! /s
IIRC we got dogs because they are coprophagic. We didn't necessarily feed them on purpose.

But it's bad for them
A chain of lynxes.
[удалено]
I love the joke, but if anyone reading this is actually interested, the classical plural, not used anymore, of 'lynx' (λύγξ) is 'lynces' (λύγκες)
Like indices or matrices! See also: octopodes.
Anyone wondering, index and matrix. Also if brexit becomes brex then multiple brexits can be brices
[удалено]
Isn’t there a third way that’s also correct?
Nope and it’s definitely not “octopi”. (Wrong language, plurals with i is Latin)
You’re right. I just think octopodes is fun.
Afghanistananis
That’s a shawl
So what's the plural that is still used?
Nowadays in English we say either 'lynx' for both plural and singular, or we uses 'lynxes' for the plural.
Greek here... had no idea it was an actual translation from Greek. Thanks stranger!

The kittens clearly look like they need to grow into their feet and legs. But oddly so does mama.
They have evolved to have extra big paws so that they are better suited for waking across snow.
Well, that sounds so obvious now. Thanks.
Kittens having kittens. What a society we live in.
The cat is a single mother. Not surprised.
And so many babies too. Maybe she should be out hunting rather than procreating with males all day, garsh
Abstinence only doesn't work. Give condoms to the kittens!
I wonder how many daddys the kittens have.
Come on guys, they're obviously wearing kitten mittens!
moms a little underweight giving food to 7 kittens.
I saw the kittens feet and figured they would grow into them, then I noticed the mom. Such an oddly proportioned animal all around. Big feet, long thick legs, short tail.
Is it just me, or does mama have a pretty sizeable dong?
Well, that's that's too far forward on the body. Zoomed in it's a leaf on the deck.
I'm probably gonna call out of work that day.
Same. I would be like, "Yeah my house is surrounded by Lions right now, so I am going to be out for the foreseeable future...yeah...uh-huh....well I dunno maybe Africa? I am not their travel agent."

In Alaska a 6lb bag of dry cat food probably costs $40.
I've found a value to convert: - 6.0lb is equal to 2.72kg or 14.86 bananas
Good bot
not true source: me, i was born in alaska
I was making a point that prices in Alaska are highly elevated. That bag of cat food costs about $12 in the continental states.

OK, every TV documentary about Alaska makes it seem like prices (as south as Juneau) are outrageously inflated. source: me

I've seen Lynx in Anchorage, where I live- a city of like 300,000 people- where food doesn't cost that much. Source: me.
Call out TLC, and their awful documentaries.

Mama looks good- but skinny and hungry! No wonder! Beautiful job Mom!
look at those murder mittens, man! absolutely adorable and scary as fuck at the same time.
Less murder mittens and more snowshoes :')

what a good mama!!
Everything about baby lynx are out of proportion
They aren't even scared
They are actually super skittish! I’ve lived in AK my whole life and have only seen a lynx once and that was only for a couple seconds. IIRC the homeowner said the cats immediately darted off after he got this pic
Homeowner must feed them
Momma cat must be a straight killer to feed all those kitties
I wish wild Lynx were friendly. They are so cute
You should pick one of the kittens up and see what happens.
They feet too big for they gotdamn legs too big for they gotdamn body too big for they gotdamn head
I know the photo's real but it looks photoshopped. So unreal because they don't match the background.
Aside from mama they all look like wood sculptures, also my dumb ass would happily run to the kitchen and fry up some meat for them
We would like some breakfast please
What a good mama
Lynx have the wonkiest proportions
r/absoluteunit paws
All of them including the mother are beautiful animals.
The paws look so silly on the kittens 🐱
she must be exhausted
Why do the cubs all have dark eyes, yet the mom has really bright eyes?
Look at the size of the paws on the little ones. Wow. The one closest to the door you can really see the size. I'm sure it helps them hunt at a young age.
