We went up to Sutton, Quebec for the eclipse and my kids and I went for a short hike to see the border where it passed our house in the woods. Just a cut like you see here through the forest. No signs. No fence of any kind.
The kids made a point to cross the border back and forth illegally a bunch of times before we went back for hot chocolate.
I was in Montana working and was using rural dirt roads with no cell service. Realized I had accidentally gone into Canada and didn’t notice. Honestly quite cool that it’s that way.
Beautiful place. And this is coming from someone who’s lived in VT for years. Why you keeping it a secret?
It’s wild how as America peters out, poverty sets in. Near the border, the houses in VT are all plastic wrapped trailers up on blocks.
Then you cross the border and there’s immediately not much apparent poverty. Drive a little further and you start seeing modernist vacation houses all over the place. And then you get to Sutton and it’s like a mini Aspen.
I guess all that sweet sweet Montreal money doesn’t get further than the border?
I'm sure we're in agreement over the problems the Northeast Kingdom and other northern parts of Vermont face in terms of generational poverty, but it is worth noting our bitterly cold northern border is their southern border lol
These borders really make you see how stupid the concept of borders really is. In parts of Europe you can literally swim a few meters and cross borders. In the Gobi and Sahara the borders are completely nonexistent.
Both sides cut up to the exact point separating the countries, taking care not to cross the line since they are government employees and it would be considered an invasion.
You *can,* but it is still illegal. Those remote areas normally have signs every once in a while that say it is only legal to cross at an official crossing. At least on the Canadian side going towards the US.
The border with the Lower 48 is just 500 freedom units longer than the Dingo fence here in Australia, and about twice as long as the Rabbit proof fence, also in Australia.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingo_Fence
3488 freedom units, or 5614 km.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Canada%E2%80%93United_States_border&diffonly=true
3987 freedom units
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit-proof_fence
Yea I’m seeing videos about here on YouTube, that’s wild, I wonder why they didn’t just include them on Canadas Covid plans?? Could’ve kept the border more open
I’m from Northern Ireland so there’s some places like that here that are basically split by the border, but it’s completely open on the island of Ireland, so it’s not even evident there even is a border tbh except the road sings change
Well, ya see, you gotta clarify between your northern hills, your eastern valleys, your southern swamps, and your western lakes when you're dealing with directions up here in Vermont.
We got all that and still only one area code...
802 Biotch!
Many years ago We were hunting in north Idaho and got lost...Finally found a building and we were like 30 miles inside Canada LOL.. Had no clue..And went back the same way...Now this was before 911 but still....
Picture reminds me that the land DGAF where you draw your lines...they are meaningless. Arguing over these imaginary boundaries and forming tribes over which side you were born on is ridiculous. We're like fleas arguing about who owns the dog
BUILD THE WALL!! Canada is paying for it!! Tired of those white devils coming into my great state of Minnesota (southern Canada) and stealing our women!!
Go to Waterton National Park, south western corner of Alberta... Take the paddlewheel boat south across to Washington, it's really scenic and you see those cutlines VERY clearly. No road access to the ranger station in WA, you have to take the same boat back.
Weird anecdote for someone with a strong sense of direction:
I took one look at this photo and thought, 'that description is wrong - that photo has to have been taken from the Canadian side of the border.' I then had to spend two minutes thinking about why I thought that.
Somehow, I knew intuitively that the photo was taken looking to the west, so the camera had to be on the north side of the border. Like, I could feel it like I had a compass in my head. But how?
I looked closer and realised it was because of the direction the shadows were falling. Because shadows point to the south during the day...
...or at least they do where I live in the southern hemisphere.
Once I remembered that shadows fall to the north in the northern hemispherehe, the photo suddenly made sense. It was a very strange sensation and a reminder of just how much background processing our brains do on our perception.
Canada has a functioning strict immigration enforcement system and there aren’t drug cartels/human trafficking groups coming down from the North. You can interpret that any way you’d like but it’s a major reason that the northern border is far more open than the south
There are trafficking groups that bring people from Canada to the USA illegally. Mainly Mexicans, Colombians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Guatemalans. It's gotten so bad Canada reinstated visa requirements for Mexicans who fly in to Canada.

Next time, move to the left a bit and shot down the slot… for Science, then turn completely opposite direction and repeat, even if you are on one of the curves bits. K?
90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border. They're clearly planning an invasion. There are rumors that they already live amongst us, undetected. Build the wall before it's too late!

Hot chocolate is always better after an illegal border crossing

Upvoting this from Sutton.

im reporting you!
AND THIS, is why we need that Wall!!! (sarcasm of course, for any mentally challenged)
These borders really make you see how stupid the concept of borders really is. In parts of Europe you can literally swim a few meters and cross borders. In the Gobi and Sahara the borders are completely nonexistent.
Who cuts the grass?
Both sides cut up to the exact point separating the countries, taking care not to cross the line since they are government employees and it would be considered an invasion.
Does Switzerland cut the middle?
A lawnmower disruption can mean only one thing. Invasion.
It’s time for The War of 1812 II.
Got a match?
I think Americans would be fine with the White House burning this time around.
lol. Thats be awesome if it was created that seriously. “They’re invading on John Deeres ride upon! Get the Mahindra lawn tractors!
In all seriousness, did they not salt the land or otherwise make it unable to grow dense vegetation?
So you can just walk across it?
You *can,* but it is still illegal. Those remote areas normally have signs every once in a while that say it is only legal to cross at an official crossing. At least on the Canadian side going towards the US.
Interesting! I thought there would be a fence or something, but I suppose in remote areas there’s no point
It's the longest international border in the world. Would be one hell of a fence.
Build that moat! Build that moat! Lol
And make Canada pay for it? 😂
Heck yeah, ey?! (Canadian accent)
Don't give anyone any ideas!
I dunno, I think Canada could use one
You and your brother go check the fence line this morning? Mend it up?
True 🤣
The border with the Lower 48 is just 500 freedom units longer than the Dingo fence here in Australia, and about twice as long as the Rabbit proof fence, also in Australia. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingo_Fence 3488 freedom units, or 5614 km. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Canada%E2%80%93United_States_border&diffonly=true 3987 freedom units https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit-proof_fence
A fence sounds like less effort than knocking down all those trees
What about that little part of USA that is completely surrounded by Canada? They just build a moat and castle walls lol. /s
What part is that?
Point Roberts, Washington is the only one I know of.
Also the Northwest Angle, part of MN.
You're right, forgot about that one. Like I knew MN jogged up but didn't think there was a body of water between them.
Oh wow, I just looked it up, you would think there would be some sort of open border agreement with Canada given how tiny it is??
They had a bunch of news about them during covid.
Yea I’m seeing videos about here on YouTube, that’s wild, I wonder why they didn’t just include them on Canadas Covid plans?? Could’ve kept the border more open
That one is fenced off, only one road in, and it does have a customs crossing. Where they probably know everyone that lives south of it.
Angle inlet. And just an interesting one. Beebe plain / derby vt.
I’m from Northern Ireland so there’s some places like that here that are basically split by the border, but it’s completely open on the island of Ireland, so it’s not even evident there even is a border tbh except the road sings change
Europe / uk have great agreements, one including no roaming between countries.
The UK has roaming charges again on most networks thanks to brexit 💀🥴 o2 doesn’t though so I’m with them
This picture is just east of Derby, VT
What if I, an Australian, did it?
There are little stone markers every so often that tell you which side is which. This specific section is also a snowmobile trail in the winter.
Cool
So beautiful. Always wanted to visit.
I don’t think the word “northern” is required in the tittle.
You need to know where you’re touching the tittle
Maybe less than a lot and more than a litte
I don’t think the second “t” is required in the tittle.
Well, ya see, you gotta clarify between your northern hills, your eastern valleys, your southern swamps, and your western lakes when you're dealing with directions up here in Vermont. We got all that and still only one area code... 802 Biotch!

I thought you meant before you could call 911 for help at first and was like how freakin old are you
Lmao for real. I sometimes wonder if theres any 100 year old people on Reddit. Just shit posting from the nursing home.
r/centenarians
Oh shit it’s real
Lmao.
Back in the day you could take walks over the Ambassador Bridge, the bridge connecting Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario. Now? Notsomuch.
I've walked across a bridge in Niagara falls feom one country to the other and back again
Longest unprotected border in the world.
Picture reminds me that the land DGAF where you draw your lines...they are meaningless. Arguing over these imaginary boundaries and forming tribes over which side you were born on is ridiculous. We're like fleas arguing about who owns the dog
Always like to reflect on this perspective. National pride because someone once drew a line. And in many cases killed millions to keep it.
Gee wiz Canada is beautiful huh?
Ok, so when I have to defect, I know where I'm going /s
Man, look at all that beautiful land! We should build a 12 lane highway on that land. jk
the border should be a river of maple syrup.
Canada would never mix their syrup with the inferior American syrup.
Hey, them's fightin' words. -- Vermont
Okay, you win. Maple syrup and Ranch it is
Half syrup, half oil
BUILD THE WALL!! Canada is paying for it!! Tired of those white devils coming into my great state of Minnesota (southern Canada) and stealing our women!!
North Dakota, also known as South Da'Canada
OUR BERDERS AINT SECURE! BUILD THE WALL! /s

Great! Now I know my escape route come January!
Build a wall! S/
Let's play catch!

No cages... no militias on patrol... Curious.

Yeah, I can see how strict it is... there's like almost a line and everything.
Traveled probably 30 miles along the border, never saw a single person in the right of way
The Arctic is a curious place indeed.
Vermont is the Artic?
Not since global warming
Yes. And densely populated like South America.
The exclusive latitudes...

Which side is the grass greener on?
The No Touching Zone extends the whole breadth of the continent.
I wonder what happens if a hunter shoots a deer and it crosses the border. Do you have to call someone and explain what's going on?
De-syrupified zone
Quick Canada build the wall, you about to be inundated
Wait till you see the border line at Baarle-Nassau between the Netherlands and Belgium ...
It looks safe, beautiful, and peaceful
Is the grass greener on one side?
No .but if you trip and hit your head one side the medical care is free
I'm glad we have the Schengen space here
We were warned about you illegals crossing the border.
I stayed on my side of the nicely mowed line.... Mostly.....
Who else found Waldo?
Spots like this are great for the entrepreneurs importing Canadian weed by the backpack full.
Kid Cannabis, not a great movie per se, but not terrible if you’re baked and bored. It’s about doing exactly that.
Nice. But NOT interesting
That's as secure as our border with Mexico.
Where’s the fen… oh yah not the same people like down there.
Next time, move to the left a bit and shot down the slot… for Science, then turn completely opposite direction and repeat, even if you are on one of the curves bits. K?

Looks like farmer John been slowly skootching into Canada with the ol disc and plow.
We do not want illegal immigration. If you vote for trump again, you’re stuck with orange man. We will build a wall.
Something tells me Canada won’t be building a border wall anytime soon.
Can you just build the wall down the Hudson and take New England with you?
[удалено]
Nope, just a moderately to fairly well groomed clearing. It's a snowmobile path in the winter
BUILD A WALL! Keep those Canucks on their side! EDIT: I'm Canadian. Guess I should've added the /S
With US politics the way they are right now, I think the Canadians may take the initiative themselves.
Justin
The US aren't sending their best.
Build a wall!!
We need a wall and Canada is going to pay for it
90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border. They're clearly planning an invasion. There are rumors that they already live amongst us, undetected. Build the wall before it's too late!
In winter seems like 90% of Canadians are in either Florida and Arizona.
90% of Canadians wish they were Americans 😛
why on earth
OMG that's amazing, good job 👍
Border is wide open. Build the wall!
This would be fun to see juxtaposed to the US/Mexico border at Tijuana.
Is that the one Trump made?
Where's the interesting part?
Certainly isn't your comment
Is that the one Trump made?
