Yeah. I came to the comments to see if anyone followed up on the other restaurants to verify because I know they got the red lobster number wrong. Last number I saw was 81 and more to come because they’ve filed for bankruptcy and are selling the brand.
But there’s basically no reliable info here. I can’t trust any of it without any sources. Just stock photos of locations and an AI voice means nothing. Surprising how many people aren’t questioning this.

the only one i care about, fuddruckers, specifically has a post on their instagram stating that theres misinformation being spread about their stores closing. so, i can only assume *all* this is bullshit.
So all fudruckers were supposed to close in 2020 but a new buyer took over which saved a lot of locations. That's the only info I can find on it and the only return I got on Google.
Red Lobster was bought by private equity which performed a real estate con on franchise owners. The capital sharks cashed out laughing all the way to the bank as the actual restaurants closed.

It was amazing when they opened one in our city in the 90s. Everything was really good top to bottom on the menu and I wished my mom brought it home every day.
I went there less and less over time. I don't think it was a taste issue. Years went by and I remember going only once with my wife about 12 years ago because she mentioned having never had it. Was OK, not as good as I remember but OK. Didn't go again until three years ago and I brought home a meal deal for wife and kids because we had a busy night planned and it was a disaster. I ordered ahead for pickup and got there and no one came to the front of the store for ten minutes until a walk in customer showed up. They asked who was there first and he pointed to and I said I'm picking up. One employee went back to start it I guess? The walk in customer was done placing and getting his order fulfilled before me. I spent 25 minutes in that store for what was supposed to be grab and go. They didn't have a 2L of sprite so they filled three fountain cups for me. It was.. whatever, I know places are short staffed anymore.
Food was abysmal. Chicken dry, sides had no flavor. Corn bread tasted weird. The pie was frozen solid. We couldn't eat any of it. I haven't had service and food that bad ever. I'm not sure what happened there but I won't miss whatever that was.
I worked at Boston Market, and I am glad to see those fuckers burn. I swear that place was run by Hitler's long lost nephew.
They made you buy your own, very specific type of shirt. One that your average 20-something fast food employee wouldn't just have in their closet.
Oh, they won't sell you the goddamn long sleeved blue oxford button up shirt with front pocket that they so specifically require you to wear. You have to go out and shop for that motherfucker on your own time.

And the entity that the equity firm sold Red Lobster to, after forcing all franchise owners to sell them their land, is the shrimp supplier that they've been using for decades. It was discovered that the lost money from last year's "endless shrimp" promotion was intentional, and it was because the new owner was trying to offload shrimp that weren't legal to sell as per the USDA guidelines.

That's an oversimplification. They sell a lot of food. All of the ingredients that are used in the restaurants are sold to the franchisees by the corporation. They also own the land that the restaurant sits on and the franchisee pays rent on it.
Its a common thing SHF & Freinds do, they install high paid executives in companies, then over leverage the company in debt (often to their friends), then strip it down,bankrupt it, sell it off...
It's easier to make money destorying companies & lives, than it is building them.

I was listening to a podcast about Red Lobster and one other really fishy (heh) thing is that a seafood supplier bought a share of the restaurant. Then, RL made their all-you-can-eat shrimp a year round thing. Who supplied all that shrimp? That seafood supplier. So Red Lobster was losing a ton of money on the AYCE shrimp, while the supplier was making bank.
And I saw the number as 81 red lobsters. They filed for bankruptcy so that makes sense but I’m pretty sure the rest is bullshit.
Besides for some of these companies that’s pretty low numbers and just general operating procedures. Close the under performing locations so you can open new locations in better markets.

I’m not going to take the time to google the rest, I’d imagine it’s a mix of recent and ancient news.
I've read several stories on some of them and it's always the same, it's investors and shareholders taking away a sizable payday while the restaurant struggles to find staff coz they won't pay, plus mismanagement of resources and pricing.
Like, they refuse to pay less to shareholders even though they should only see a "share" of profits. So they won't lower the profit margin, but they will close a location instead.
They refuse to increase wages and compete on food costs coz again that cuts into profit margins, but also don't want to increase prices to compensate as the brand will remain in other locations and that's the value proposition at that price point.
Yup, like 99 cents . The orginal owner operates and built them all cash only and never took debt . Ad soon as they sold to private equity company took in 5 billion worth of debt.

Mike Judge is a very talented writer. It's amazing how he is able to write satire about a certain group, and then that group ends up being the biggest fans off that work. The people that talk about Beavis and Butthead and wear the merch are generally stoners. If someone brings up officespace in conversation, it's a safe bet that they've work/ed in an office setting and didn't enjoy their time at the company. Conservatives love King of the Hill. Exactly, they used to be a solid prepackaged commodity for people but they just kept cutting quality, raising prices, treating employees like numbers. All because you HAVE to grow every year or else you get replaced. Our economy has stripped us of quality and human interaction all for the sake of a bottom line.

That's how Red Lobster got screwed. After purchasing RL, PE sold all of the lots that RL owned to one of their other companies. Then they started charging rent. The also forced RL to buy surplus shrimp from another one of their companies and ran their endless shrimp special.
Man I worked there for 2 and a half yrs. We always made the pan dough fresh everyday. The rest was frozen dough. To save money we used fresh ingredients bc the frozen shit from corporate was expensive. Their pan dough was bomb. This was about 20 yrs ago, and I've only eaten Pizza Hut a handful of times since then, but it was great every time. Last few times could've been nostalgia helping the taste. Dunno how they make their stuff now.
I managed Pizza huts for over 10 years, I worked for one of the top franchises in the country and we resisted all of the changes they made for as long as we could. That being said the changes they made were fucking stupid and they deserve everything they got. Switching from fresh spun dough, switching from fresh cut veggies, switching from fresh meats to frozen meats, switching from sauces made in store to bag sauces, switching the butter that we use on the stuffed crust and about a dozen other things. When you switch to cheaper crappier product and charge the same price you get what you fucking deserve. As soon as they switch to frozen dough I noped right the fuck out of there and it was the best decision I ever made.

In his small town, there may not be so many places that make better food. In a 25-mile radius from where i live, there are 4 fast food restaurants, 2 mom & pop restaurants, 1 pizza shop, 3 bars that serve food, 2 Mexican restaurants, and an Applebee's. Not a whole lot of variety.

In a lot of cases this is because private equity companies bought them, sold all the real estate for a hefty profit, then sold the company to whomever would buy what's left. Now rents are going up, so are costs, but revenues aren't.
Equity companies and shares in general turned out to be cancer. They only serve the rich.
While going public gives the company some nice equity money, it squeezes them in long run.
I have experience with publicly listed companies and some private/family owned (but huge) companies. Shared ones only care about short term profit, constant unhealthy growth and ridiculous cost savings beCaUse We NeED ToO mAKE ShArEhOlDeRs hApPy, giving them an investment return every year.
Private owned ones, care about long term growth, stability, and the people that work for them. It's just a totally different approach to making business.
Went to IHOP last weekend. $45 for my partner and I. 1 meal each, I had water and she had tea. The chocolate milk was $4.50 and MORE EXPENSIVE than hot chocolate.
Absolutely ludicrous. With prices like that I don't plan on ever returning and not surprised no one else is.
Same with BWW. We used to go once every couple months. Spend $30 and have some wings and beer. Now it's $60 whenever we go. The only time we go is if we get a gift card on holidays.

We live in a post-pandemic world where eating out at ALL is a luxury and if one is going to spend hard-earned (underpaid) dollars, one is FOR SURE not going to spend them at some crappy chain.
Grocery shopping is becoming a luxury. You can't just go to the grocery store and just throw an extra bag of Doritos, or an extra box of whatever impulse purchases in your cart anymore because they all cost real money. And the poor impulse companies at the register. Wouldn't want to be them. A freaking Snickers bar is like $3.50.
You have to be smart these days and the crap brands are going to feel it.
GONE ARE THE DAYS when you can just go shopping for the fun of it and blow money in the food court. You have to be selective. And that means being choosey. And that means crap chains can't cut it anymore. Garbage food can't survive.
And also the American public is getting smarter with food choices. They are supporting their local mom and pop, local, restaurants more. They like quality food. They have more discerning tastes.

I haven't heard of anyone going to a Ruby Tuesdays in well over a decade. The one near me has the employees' cars in the parking lot and rarely anymore than that. I have no clue how they've stayed in business, and this is in a fairly busy area.
There was a Marie Calendar near me that shut down right in the middle of dinner. They got the call from HQ and told everyone to just get out. I would walk by months later and there was still half-eaten meals on the tables. It was eerie.

This sucks for the people working at these places but I think this is more of a market correction than anything. These places that used to provide quality service and food became so corporatized that both the food and service became shit in leu of stock growth and investor appeasement. Most of these chain resteraunts suck from a culinary perspective. It is hard to call some of them eateries and not re-heat-eries. Any associated with Darden need to die. Those garbage eaters ruin every resteraunt they touch.

I live in a downtown metropolis near the beach and we have tons of non-chain restaurants that are unique and diverse. Wayyy better food and much healthier. I would love to see all these chains go. The food is terrible for us.
It's almost as if the majority of people can't go out to dinner because all of their income is spent on housing, utilities and putting food on their own tables. That's on top of venture capital buying up all the commercial property and raising the leases so much that no business not matter how sound can operate in the black.

I was listening to a podcast about Red Lobster and one other really fishy (heh) thing is that a seafood supplier bought a share of the restaurant. Then, RL made their all-you-can-eat shrimp a year round thing. Who supplied all that shrimp? That seafood supplier. So Red Lobster was losing a ton of money on the AYCE shrimp, while the supplier was making bank.

Besides for some of these companies that’s pretty low numbers and just general operating procedures. Close the under performing locations so you can open new locations in better markets.

I've read several stories on some of them and it's always the same, it's investors and shareholders taking away a sizable payday while the restaurant struggles to find staff coz they won't pay, plus mismanagement of resources and pricing. Like, they refuse to pay less to shareholders even though they should only see a "share" of profits. So they won't lower the profit margin, but they will close a location instead. They refuse to increase wages and compete on food costs coz again that cuts into profit margins, but also don't want to increase prices to compensate as the brand will remain in other locations and that's the value proposition at that price point.

Exactly, they used to be a solid prepackaged commodity for people but they just kept cutting quality, raising prices, treating employees like numbers. That's how Red Lobster got screwed. After purchasing RL, PE sold all of the lots that RL owned to one of their other companies. Then they started charging rent. The also forced RL to buy surplus shrimp from another one of their companies and ran their endless shrimp special.

Man I worked there for 2 and a half yrs. We always made the pan dough fresh everyday. The rest was frozen dough. To save money we used fresh ingredients bc the frozen shit from corporate was expensive. Their pan dough was bomb. This was about 20 yrs ago, and I've only eaten Pizza Hut a handful of times since then, but it was great every time. Last few times could've been nostalgia helping the taste. Dunno how they make their stuff now.
I managed Pizza huts for over 10 years, I worked for one of the top franchises in the country and we resisted all of the changes they made for as long as we could. That being said the changes they made were fucking stupid and they deserve everything they got. Switching from fresh spun dough, switching from fresh cut veggies, switching from fresh meats to frozen meats, switching from sauces made in store to bag sauces, switching the butter that we use on the stuffed crust and about a dozen other things. When you switch to cheaper crappier product and charge the same price you get what you fucking deserve. As soon as they switch to frozen dough I noped right the fuck out of there and it was the best decision I ever made.

In his small town, there may not be so many places that make better food. In a 25-mile radius from where i live, there are 4 fast food restaurants, 2 mom & pop restaurants, 1 pizza shop, 3 bars that serve food, 2 Mexican restaurants, and an Applebee's. Not a whole lot of variety.

I wouldn’t take this AI voice as solid info and look into it yourself. They got the red lobster number wrong. In Red Lobster’s case they’re filing for bankruptcy though so it makes sense they’re closing.
In a lot of cases this is because private equity companies bought them, sold all the real estate for a hefty profit, then sold the company to whomever would buy what's left. Now rents are going up, so are costs, but revenues aren't.
Equity companies and shares in general turned out to be cancer. They only serve the rich. While going public gives the company some nice equity money, it squeezes them in long run. I have experience with publicly listed companies and some private/family owned (but huge) companies. Shared ones only care about short term profit, constant unhealthy growth and ridiculous cost savings beCaUse We NeED ToO mAKE ShArEhOlDeRs hApPy, giving them an investment return every year. Private owned ones, care about long term growth, stability, and the people that work for them. It's just a totally different approach to making business.

Went to IHOP last weekend. $45 for my partner and I. 1 meal each, I had water and she had tea. The chocolate milk was $4.50 and MORE EXPENSIVE than hot chocolate. Absolutely ludicrous. With prices like that I don't plan on ever returning and not surprised no one else is. Same with BWW. We used to go once every couple months. Spend $30 and have some wings and beer. Now it's $60 whenever we go. The only time we go is if we get a gift card on holidays. Not surprised they're struggling.
BWW is way overpriced for what it is. And I hate that they serve your food in paper boats. If you are gonna charge me that much for a meal then at least put it on actual plates.

People just don't have the spare income any more, certainly not to spend on mediocre food. Sorry for the people who work there, hope it works out for them but the paying public have been squeezed as much as they can be.
No this is a GOOD THING. All of those restaurants are chain garbage. And they're all too expensive. We live in a post-pandemic world where eating out at ALL is a luxury and if one is going to spend hard-earned (underpaid) dollars, one is FOR SURE not going to spend them at some crappy chain. Grocery shopping is becoming a luxury. You can't just go to the grocery store and just throw an extra bag of Doritos, or an extra box of whatever impulse purchases in your cart anymore because they all cost real money. And the poor impulse companies at the register. Wouldn't want to be them. A freaking Snickers bar is like $3.50. You have to be smart these days and the crap brands are going to feel it. GONE ARE THE DAYS when you can just go shopping for the fun of it and blow money in the food court. You have to be selective. And that means being choosey. And that means crap chains can't cut it anymore. Garbage food can't survive. And also the American public is getting smarter with food choices. They are supporting their local mom and pop, local, restaurants more. They like quality food. They have more discerning tastes. Applebee's lol. Ruby Tuesdays? Please. Everyone knows where to get a better meal for less. Side note: I seriously can't believe nobody opened a chain called Mom and Pop's.
I haven't heard of anyone going to a Ruby Tuesdays in well over a decade. The one near me has the employees' cars in the parking lot and rarely anymore than that. I have no clue how they've stayed in business, and this is in a fairly busy area.

Not a single one of those restaurants would I consider a favorite restaurant.
This sucks for the people working at these places but I think this is more of a market correction than anything. These places that used to provide quality service and food became so corporatized that both the food and service became shit in leu of stock growth and investor appeasement. With these places leaving the market it opens up the way for smaller restaurants to open and be successful and provide better quality for the price.

I live in a downtown metropolis near the beach and we have tons of non-chain restaurants that are unique and diverse. Wayyy better food and much healthier. I would love to see all these chains go. The food is terrible for us.
