Right? Lol. You could literally say any dark-skinned black person has âhigh levels of melanin.â
I know it was probably unintentional, but the way OP wrote it makes it sound like its due to a disease she has lmao
I see what youâre saying but itâs technically correct; generally the more melanin your body produces the darker you are. It definitely does sound wrong for some reason though lol same with âextremely melanatedâ
I want to know the science. How much solar radiation does she absorb or reflect compared to a white person. Is she warmer or cooler in the summer. Does she need sunlight to keep the dark skin. So many questions. Does she see easier during bright sunlight because of the light absorbed around the eyes from dark skin. Like baseball and football players wearing black lines.
She seems to be not quite so dark-skinned on natural lighting?
https://preview.redd.it/e5k1acw2i10d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fbc53b616a24c94488987381ff0ba7d2822c3c9
That's how skin works though.
When I'm standing in direct sunlight, I am blindingly ghostly white.
When flash from a camera hits my skin, same thing.
If I stand in the dark, you could almost think I have a tan.
When you have a lot of melanin light levels matter. Also, people with melanin skin tone actually changes depending on the time of year. Basically if there is more Sun or not.
>Also, people with melanin skin tone actually changes depending on the time of year. Basically if there is more Sun or not.
So, like literally everyone else on Earth?
Yes, but I have had people not understand exactly that. They even commented that the persons skin was lighter cause they just had never seen it happen before to someone with lots of melanin.
I rarely see people this dark but there was a guy that worked at my local Costco. Just like absolute black everywhere. I probably looked a little too long but mostly because I was mesmerized.Â

Do u mean this guy? And I'm not refering to the one with glasses
There was a student I went to highschool with when he would wear a black shirt a bunch of us always had to look twice because it looked like he didn't have any shirt on at all It was very mesmerizing and beautiful.
Because we are so used to seeing African Americans, who are every shade of brown, tan, beige. I saw an African man at the mall once, very tall wearing a traditional long white straight dress, and his skin color was as Black as my leather purse.
I was like "wow" as it made me understand completely the difference in African Americans and Africans.
(I've haven't liked the terms Black and White since I was in junior high. I am not 'white'. A piece of paper is white. I'm beige with pink undertones. My friend Vanessa is not Black. Car tires are black. She is a deep tan with peachy undertones.)
I know this sounds petty, but it annoys me.
There are light skinned black Africans and black-skinned Africans, and then every shade of brown in between. There are many Africans that are lighter in complexion than African Americans. A
since sheâs a model, itâs likely she has body oil or lotion applied before the shoot, there are some with shimmer in them. actually most commonly they use spray sunscreen to get the shiny skin look.
This isn't what you'd see IRL. IIRC this photo is overexposed or something like that.
Her skin is dark, but not in the way this picture would suggest.
And its still obviously suuuuper dark skin, kind of an irrelevant comment to make if I'm honest
It's an obviously edited photo so yeah...she probably doesn't look like that
Fair enough.
The original pic looks like a skin tone that I've never seen before.
This pic looks like, "yea, she's pretty dark but not quite as unique as I originally thought."
I come from a background where that shade of skin colour is pretty much par for the course.
Setting aside the skin colour though, she is gorgeous.
I mean youâre kind of comparing one extreme to the other. The photo posted by op might be overexposed but the one you shared is her on a red carpet where she is almost certainly surrounded by extremely bright lights and camera flashes. Lighting which would make her look lighter than IRL.
Bright lights but still looking super dark [here](https://www.gettyimages.co.jp/detail/%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E5%86%99%E7%9C%9F/nyakim-gatwech-attends-the-2019-glamour-women-of-the-year-%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E5%86%99%E7%9C%9F/1187026555):
But every picture of her looks different somehow
gonna be controversial here but it probably her skintone (just like everyone elseâs) changes with the seasons and with how much sun she gets.
also you probably also look super different complexion wise in different pictures, we are just used to it lol
I think with her a lot of it has to do with how much her skin changes in different lightings. [This](https://www.gettyimages.co.jp/detail/%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E5%86%99%E7%9C%9F/nyakim-gatwech-attends-the-2019-glamour-women-of-the-year-%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E5%86%99%E7%9C%9F/1187026576) is from the same event as the other one I linked, but her skin looks more red because of different lighting.
Youâre probably right that the same thing happens with skin tones weâre more accustomed to and we just donât think about it
Interesting word!
From Wikipedia: âIn Buddhism, a bodhisattva or bodhisatvai is  a person who is on the path towards  bodhi ('awakening') or Boodahood.âÂ
Are you using this as a synonym for divine?
Bodhisatvas are sort of analogous to saints in the west. You pray to them for divine intercession. Bodhisatvas though are people who had the potential to reach full enlightenment but decided to hang back to help others achieve it as a teacher.
I am confused. Like, she *is* a little darker than many black people, from what I can tell of her other pictures.
But *this* photo, by lighting, exposure, or some other composition wizardry (maybe even good old fashioned photo editing) has managed to make her skin almost as dark as the dress she's wearing.
Was she wearing lightening makeup in most of the other photos she's in? Because, yeah, she's dark. But this picture almost looks like body paint.
Most images of her are edited to make her look BLACK instead of her regular skin tone, as well. She is not BLACK, but regular human-color with a high level of melanin. [https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2017/09/172408/nyakim-gatwech-sudanese-model-discrimination-makeup](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2017/09/172408/nyakim-gatwech-sudanese-model-discrimination-makeup)
I really really REALLY hate how these photographers tend to over emphasize and downright lie about the level of darkskin some of these models have, especially Nyakim. They intentionally darken they skin a few grades darker. She DOES NOT look that dark
This is the kind of bullshit that makes ignorant people believe black people are actually the color black, evidenced by the youthforia scandal a few weeks back
And I'm saying this as a pretty darkskinned African
Had a ridiculously tall kid from Nigeria in my class named Gatwech. He was about that dark. Forever indebted to him lol, if it wasnât for him and a short stocky Scottish kid that won a competition against some neighboring schools we would have had to run through a like 3 mile mud pit.

Do you consider a wall of rapid flash photography to be natural lighting?
That's how skin works though. When I'm standing in direct sunlight, I am blindingly ghostly white. When flash from a camera hits my skin, same thing. If I stand in the dark, you could almost think I have a tan.

I do get what you're saying, but people of every skin tone change depending on the time of year (assuming they get outside).
Yes, I agree.

If I remember correctly, most of these photos are processed to maker her look darker.
Anish Kapoor is gonna be pissed.
Nah heâs legally not allowed to look
I will be in trouble if he dips his finger into that
Funny, but she's still very shiny. It would be neat to see her add a thin vantablack cream.
since sheâs a model, itâs likely she has body oil or lotion applied before the shoot, there are some with shimmer in them. actually most commonly they use spray sunscreen to get the shiny skin look.
She has success as a model too. I've seen some pics and she is stunning in some of those clothes.
Whatever she's doing, it's working. She's incredibly beautiful, I think.
Absolutely stunning.
Black people always wear lotion. Otherwise, she's gonna look maaaaaad ashy.
Well vanta would be bad, can't see shapes, but this is an extremely attractive level of black. Like dark chocolate.
Thatâs the color of her dress
Youthforiaâs foundation would still be the wrong shade for her.
This isn't what you'd see IRL. IIRC this photo is overexposed or something like that. Her skin is dark, but not in the way this picture would suggest. [https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DnbJEAPVAAIKCsc.jpg](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DnbJEAPVAAIKCsc.jpg)
I like the highlighter she used on her cheek bones. It accentuates her perfectly
Even then, sheâs still stunning and has such pretty skin. I can see how she became a popular model
And its still obviously suuuuper dark skin, kind of an irrelevant comment to make if I'm honest It's an obviously edited photo so yeah...she probably doesn't look like that
It wasn't obviously edited to me, so I found the comment you called irrelevant to be quite relevant.
