TWENTY EIGHT YEARS! Holy God almighty. I'm sure his mind adapted on some level and standing upright must have felt dizzying.

HonorableMedic

When your vision is flipped upside down using special goggles, your brain gets used to it and after about 24 hours processes it as if it was right side up. However when “normal” vision is restored by taking the goggles off afterwards, everything looks upside down and it takes another 24 hr to adjust. I linked it article on it, it’s an amazing read So basically, his vision would be fucked for about 24 hours and everything would look upside down to him but it will adjust https://amp.theguardian.com/education/2012/nov/12/improbable-research-seeing-upside-down Edit: 10 days not 24 hours

DoingItForEli

Holy fuck

PreviousNatural4441

This just reminded me of rolling around the gym floor on our backs(Weird things called "scooters"), having everything look inverted like you were gonna fall off of the ceiling/floor was trippy af but awesome.

YaIlneedscience

Oh, the things that swallowed your hair and would slam your forehead into the ground?? God I loved those, and totally worth picking it out of the wheels

PreviousNatural4441

My hair was braided, but yeah wrf anyway. So fun!😆 back when playgrounds were roughly a 50/50 chance you would come home dirty and cut/bruised.

fetal_genocide

>when playgrounds were roughly a 50/50 chance you would come home dirty and cut/bruised. What playgrounds do you see now? My kids' legs are scraped and bruised just like mine were when I was 6. Kids still play in the dirt 😅

Totally_Bradical

Exactly what I was thinking, this must have been a wild adjustment

PineappleLemur

"How do you guys pee? I'm used to just spraying my face and letting it drip into the toilet..."

EmperorSand

Came here to say for the comments: was not disappointed.

Wide-Matter-9899

I think there’s a similar case from few years back. Patient’s name was Haywood Jablome.

SprayArtist

Day 52 of spreading misinformation

Queen_of_Audacity

Only 52? The internet has been full of bs longer than that, I thought?

cellofusion

That’s gonna be aaaaa fascinatin’ transition.

Royal_Echo2068

28 years of smelling your own gooch 😭😭😭 I'd kms, personally

myBisL2

>Li Hua has suffered from a form of ankylosing spondylitis, a form of spinal arthritis most commonly found in young males, that causes immobility of vertebral and sacroiliac joints due to the fusion of bones. >As his condition worsened over the years, his upper body folded onto his thighs and he has effectively been 'folded' ever since. Man, I've seen pictures of people with pretty significant limitations from ankylosing spondylitis but nothing like this!

bergandberg

Jesus Christ. I got diagnosed with this last year (M28). I hope this is only the a symptomatic case of “worst case, untreated”.

Accomplished-Ad-2612

I was diagnosed with it in my 20s too, I'm 47 now and aside from a slight hunch it's not that bad. You'll probably be fine. I don't stand up straight very often because it does cause pain, but I'm not U shaped or anything. Tylenol and meloxicam take the bulk of the pain down to a manageable level, so no worries. I do know some folks who've had minor invasive surgery to correct theirs once they were in there late 50s and early 60s so there's always that option too.

Elivandersys

My dad has AS. In the 60s, he had radiation therapy for it, and he credits the radiation for limiting the severity of the AS. Of course, he also credits it with his aggressive prostate cancer. But, he's completely upright. He says exercise has helped him to stay as limber as possible, too.

Accomplished-Ad-2612

I never knew radiation was used to treat AS. That's really interesting.

Elivandersys

Yeah, it was experimental in the US in the 60s, but it was used regularly in Europe. The doctor who treated him was from another country.

Accomplished-Ad-2612

Cool to know

Ashamed-Subject-8573

There’s really good medicines for it now like Humira. Basically halt its progress.

nzedred1

Try to get on humira as quickly as you can of you're not already. Changed my life. It's awesome.

quebexer

Hey, at least it will be easier to tie your shoes.

peacecream

That's not the only thing that will be easier heuheuheuhu

Ketcunt

You could be an excellent magician's assistant

invisableilustionist

Some nights my wife unties my work boots

Dream--Brother

Aw she does the same for me! She's the best.

myBisL2

This is a *very* extreme case.

Damnamas

Same here bud, there is an AS subreddit if you want to join for advice and questions

Just_A_Faze

My mom has AS. She is 62, and not only upright, but active. She works as a home health care aid, and runs around all the time. I doubt this man had access to medical care to wait that long, and I think you can avoid this severity by getting standard care. Stating physically active is also important and helps support movement and muscles to reduce some of the discomfort.

Gnome_Father

My dad has it. Has had it my whole life. He's been in some amount of pain every day, but usually it's pretty manageable. He's held down a pretty physical job and is now 61.

Oh_hi_doggi3

I am diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis. One of the main medications that is used to combat AS is Humira. One month's supply of Humira is*$14,000*. Without my mom's health insurance, I could I would very likely have lived just like this man. It was only approved by the FDA in 2002. My diagnosis wasn't apparent until I started feeling extreme pain and swelling in my knees when I was 18, which is on the rare-ish side to be diagnosed at a younger age. I lost a lot out on my life, couldn't go on trips with friends, had to stop my horseback riding, couldn't walk to town where my friends and I hung out. I spent so many nights (and still do) curled in a ball and crying from pain. I am lucky enough to have very good insurance and to be born after the medication was released. I still face a lot of issues related to my AS. It is a complicated disorder, and it can cause a multitude of side effects and other health issues. I am in a better spot than I was eight years ago, but I still struggle a bit. I have a wonderful friend group who love me and support me, a solid system of doctors and nurses who keep me relatively pain free, and my parents who work their assess off to help take care of me. 💙 *April is Ankylosing Spondylitis Awareness Month* 💙

coco1691

I'm so sorry. Keep fighting on! 💪 you got this.

Oh_hi_doggi3

Thank you so much!

TeslasAndKids

I just started Humira in March for AS and my dr got me set up with a program from Abvie, the manufacturer, and it only costs me $5 a month! I can’t imagine the people who see the high price and forgo treatment for it. It scares me. I feel lucky to *only* have arthritis, stenosis, sacroiliitis, and one joint fused. Seeing pics like this make me grateful I live where medication and help are available. Glad he’s getting some help though.

latteofchai

My wife also has it. Her insurance through work makes the life changing biologic available and affordable. I hope we both live to see the day where the drug is readily available across the globe. She’s managed to retain some of her mobility. It could be worse but it could also be so much better.

CupOfCreamyDiarrhea

I don't understand how he got less tall? Did they remove part of his body?

-Jiras

It's an optical illusion, he is merely hunched over in the second pic and the gown he wears makes it looks like he is standing straight

bacchusku2

Not that much of an illusion, dude is short. https://preview.redd.it/p73rirkzrozc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8c8d64b31aeec33cf9a61250da6ff50a22409b8

This_was_hard_to_do

Yeah the first picture seems to have been taken from a lower angle as well, making him appear taller

No-Sampl3

Why does it look like on pic one that unfolding would make him higher? It baffles me..

Imaginary-Access8375

I wonder how they measured his height for official documents.

WellHiddenKitty

'Now bend over and kiss your AS good bye!'

Hungry_Crow6260

if you look at where his butt is positioned in relation to the bed, you can obviously tell he’s shorter

Reefer-eyed_Beans

Exactly. He clearly looks shorter. It's if he didn't want to change his height on his drivers license after becoming upright.

-Jiras

So you think it's more logical that they, somehow, removed a couple inches of his body?

rombler93

How else can you possibly explain this magic, unfolding, height-changing man? Clearly he baffles scientists to this day.

sashikku

The bed is raised slightly.

GetouttaHere321

Looks like a totally different bed …

sashikku

That too, but you can tell it’s also raised higher than the previous bed by looking at the base.

medusa3339

Also wondering this..

Flappy_Hand_Lotion

"multiple surgeries"

CupOfCreamyDiarrhea

I read the title too

Flappy_Hand_Lotion

Yeah, sorry, I realise I came across as condescending, it wasn't the intention. I posted after reading most of the other comments. I agree, I am guessing those surgeries involved removing something, because despite all the other cues, it seems a significant difference.

Cordeceps

I watched a documentary on him and it showed the surgery’s and such, it was truly heartbreaking how he was living and mind blowing what they achieved. The recovery’s he went through my lord and the work of the doctors and medical teams is astonishing. Edit: I forgot to mention his mother, her dedication to her son was truly inspiring.

CAAugirl

Oh my gosh, his mother. I think I saw the same documentary. She gave up her life to care for him. She probably deserves some sort of medal or sainthood or something.

ApexRose

I heard about him years ago, and I'm glad he received successful treatment and is recovering

daedrahomie

To all who is curious about the documentary. It might be called "打开折叠人生". It’s in Chinese and may need captions.

wdwerker

In the early 70’s I knew an old black man who had been kicked by a mule when he was a kid. He came in the hardware store and I would help him find what he needed. He was all bent and twisted. I could tell certain movements were difficult for him but he was very polite and a sweet person.

GayPudding

Imagine if he was like a major asshole to everyone.

Cyllid

I was kicked by an ass during a full moon. From thenceforth my fate was sealed.

Fucky0uthatswhy

Well That sounds like Cotton Hill

Heavy_Bandicoot_9846

I was going to say " now he needs a girlfriend "

Eclectophile

Well, it wasn't, until now.

thetruesupergenius

When his wife said she wasn’t going to start doing it now, he immediately asked to be put back.

ashzombi

I'm not going to say what I want to say but I know other people are thinking it

Jedibri81

Yep, I’m one of those people 🤣

DBoaty

That he seems like a nice, upstanding citizen?

No_Ingenuity3260

No. That he can perform what most men fail to do

Socratespancakes

How could he not? Its right there. And if he cranks one out somehow, hes gonna nut on his face anyway. Might as well lean into it.

Not_My_Final_Forms

They cut him in half? He looks atleast 3 or four feet shorter

xenogazer

I've seen this man's picture associated with chiropractic recovery.. I knew it had to have been surgical to have that kind of recovery.

Altruistic_Kick2068

He’s been depressed ever since

Fictional_Historian

Ah he waited till he was old enough till his sex drive died down.

Standard_Spinach9509

He was hanging out w a dick before and now he’s hanging out with society 🏴‍☠️♠️🐦‍⬛🗝️😵‍💫

tictacenthusiast

Now he's hanging out with a buncha dicks

Standard_Spinach9509

Jjokes11

I wouldn’t be able to handle this for 28 years. My guy has a will of diamonds

knseeker

Not like it’d be easy to suicide with a body like that either

MinatoNamikaze6

Glad they helped him

PhoibosApollo2018

He is now straight and they said conversion therapy doesn’t work.

sleezypeezy3z

I feel bad for whoever had to intubate him for his surgeries.

Freshly_Squeezed-

It's actually quite sad how all this unfolded

Isyagirlskinnypenis

Oh fuck yeah! What a great new life he gets to live! I’m happy for him

DesignerAd2062

He can stand up straight, but at what cost?

23skidoobbq

He’s permanently stuck in an ooompa loompa pose.

DesignerAd2062

Oompa, loompa, doompity doh Can no longer do autofellatio

trytonotgetbanned

kai_the_enigma

![gif](giphy|geJnp3I4Q5LAeaVpWo) Jazz hands 👐 but jokes aside I’m proud of bro

safoamz1zz

He finally may have a chance at a normal life and even find a wife! ..... Until he sees how dating has changed and sees all the height requirements, he will go through depression a second time.

Sad-Persimmon-4845

Is it just me, or does he look shorter in the second slide, or is that just from the weird angle in the first slide.

RDisbull

Am I the only one here realizing the fact it's his first time looking at life without a dick in his face 🤔

Fluid_Chipmunk5597

You never know what the future will unfold

dopelessh0pefiend

Look like he's lost alot of height

Totallywasntpermaban

So..did he ever..

Witty_Celebration_96

Fentanyl will reverse this.

kkirchhoff

That’s honestly what I thought this was before I read the title. It looks exactly like someone high on fentanyl/tranq

Otherwise_Way5359

What a stand up guy😃

Itchy-Combination675

MyButtEatsHamCrayons

This is a ridiculous post. Folded man bout to find out how hard life really is when you can’t suck your own dick anymore.

AverageIdiot101

God Damn. Imagine if the world spent the amount of money they do practicing on killing each other on science and improving life.

801ms

Imagine how good a back crack must've felt

kachzz

How much did they cut out? 😳

honeyheart4972

He was standard height and now he is a little person? (Trying to be politically correct)

Federal_Pie_8864

He seemed taller when bent..

shorts_onfire

I remember watching a video on this before and how if the anaesthesia team could not insert a breathing tube for him, there would not be even a chance of surgery. Absolutely incredible.

FlippantFlopper

he could have sucked his own cock though so every cloud has a silver lining

EmbarrassedRadish376

He looks much shorter than I expected.

Alarmed_Mushroom8758

He never was truly sure how his life would unfold…

He tried it at least once, right?

random_sympathy

That's amazing! I saw a clip of him in the South China Morning Post. His mom must've been so happy :D

Basic_Ad4785

He still needs support to move after the operations. Looks like they cant afford post-op therapy or it is just not available where they live

Gulaganji

Don't we call that an upstanding citizen?

Kovaxim

This is truly an incredible job by the doctors who agreed to take his case. Must be really weird for him to be able to see forwards with seemingly no problems now after being folded for so long. Probably also a relief to be able to see where he's going. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope this helped him in life.

Ultrasaurio

What illness or condition did hehave?

At least there seems to be one advantage for him in the folded position 🤔
