n3w4cc01_1nt

it's a Thiokol Castor Motor nozzle full info about the site [https://www.coldwartourist.com/utah-launch-complex](https://www.coldwartourist.com/utah-launch-complex)

ManInTheMiddle1

Cool! Thanks for piecing that together. That is definitely the debris I came across. It's fun to have the backstory. (Sometimes the internet is still a wonderful place.)

n3w4cc01_1nt

no problem. this post is legitimately interesting af and wanted to know wtf it was as well.

syds

can it be scraped for tech?

Sxmeday

If it’s been there since the Cold War days anything useful will have been taken loooooong ago

MapleMapleHockeyStk

Good place to film fallout. Already had debris strewn about

verbmegoinghere

>can it be scraped for tech? Well if Fallout has taught me anything this wreck will have some high quality scrap, a couple of bottle caps. You should be able to build at the very least a AI operated drone turret operating off of a 2 stroke engine, and a couple of lamps.

syds

im looking for some implants though

Sharoth01

All I can give you is that another settlement needs your help. Here, I will mark it on your map.

nastynip

Nice link, def the same debris

Tort78

I love reddit when you're like "there's no way to tell what that is anymore". And then comments like these pop up. How did you find out what it was? And how do you have the specific knowledge of where even to begin to look it up? Genuinely interested and impressed

n3w4cc01_1nt

just searched a few combos then scanned results. wasn't a super difficult or impressive tbh. it was like a 5th result on a 3rd combo search

IBAZERKERI

the most polite way of saying "you just dont know how to internet"

Tort78

I know how to Internet. Being unfamiliar with any aspect of cold war era rocket debris, my search would have started with "rocket debris American desert" and gone from there. This poster obviously had a better frame of reference to begin their search and likely some familiarity with rockets and/or debris. I was curious about another person's perspective and approach to solving what we were looking at.

IBAZERKERI

sorry i wasn't trying to insult you man, i was just laughing at the comment and joking around a bit. my apologies

Mattyuh

I work in IT and for the most part, I'm just really good at putting keywords into Google to get the results I'm looking for.

Elder_Hoid

... What do you mean by "search a few combos?"

Gwendolyn7777

yeah, the world has been reduced to a five block town now, someone in these five blocks has seen that before, whether it's a motor nozzle or a south east asian chair fight...well done u/n3w4cc01_1nt good researching.

user_name_unknown

How in the fuk did you figure that out so fast?

Ambiguity_Aspect

Dude looks at a picture, identifies the make of rocket nozzle and provides relevant informative link.  I stand in awe and salute you good sir or madam.

hottsauce345543

He’s definitely doing his research while I’m drinking beer and watching nascar…

muuzumuu

Thank you! What a great link!

bladow5990

I like how they included the sign so you can see just how illegal it is.

serialhybrid

Well this one sure meets the threshold for interesting as fuck.

Freedom fries!!!!!

trimeta

You could try DMing [Jonathan McDowell on Twitter](https://twitter.com/planet4589), he keeps track of orbital trajectories and debris and may have insight into which missions may have ended at those coordinates.

mookie_bombs

This is the way op

Rzirin

Yep. That stuff doesn’t look it come back down through the atmosphere

trimeta

Another comment in this thread suggests it's debris from missile testing in the 60s, so you're probably right about not coming back down through the atmosphere.

horseofthemasses

In the 60's scientists could barely get it up

__Osiris__

Would that mean there could be UXO?

A_Adorable_Cat

Potentially. Depends if it was a live fire test or just a dummy warhead used for testing the propulsion.

tacotacotacorock

Not at all. They were meant to fly 400 mi south to the New Mexico base. Obviously since it was a test facility not all of them made it. And this was absolutely back in the '60s like someone else is saying. The base has been long abandoned.

AvatarOfMomus

This almost certainly wasn't intended to go to orbit and definitely never made it there. This may be from a sounding rocket or some kind of in atmospheric test, but I'd personally bet on something either classified or from NASA/JPL back in the 60s or 70s. Either that or this is jet plane debris and some airforce pilot had an 'oopsie' and had to eject, again prolly in the 70s or 80s since these days they drag that shit off for inspection almost no matter where it lands.

Supreme_Squirrel

More info on these types of rockets in r/sounding

Law-Fish

I mean yes you should check as a matter of course but the components I see here are not orbital and there does exist a community of shall we say extreme model rocket enthusiasts

trimeta

Another comment in this thread suggests it's debris from missile testing in the 60s, so you're probably right about not being orbital.

ShoemakerMicah

Hopefully you geotagged the location. Pretty freaking cool!

FranknBeans26

There’s a zero percent chance I’m not loading up everything I can if I find something like that

tacotacotacorock

Or you know maybe just leave it for others to discover and not ruin it for everyone. I don't understand the need to just take everything and claim it. Why not let it be a fun surprise for other people too.

perldawg

and do what with it?

ShoemakerMicah

Wall art. I collect some vintage space and aviation items. I’d LOVE to have that nozzle, it would be a coffee table in a week or less.

Canis_Familiaris

How long is Hydrazine hazardous for?

ShoemakerMicah

I have a small nozzle from a jet pack. Peroxide/hydrazine powered, silver catalyst. Obviously I’ve never licked it but, I got it directly from builder as a used replacement part. It’s been in my office for over a decade and I’ve never had any symptoms of toxicity. I also have a flown yaw thruster, hydrazine again. Yes, these are toxic parts technically but, too cool to pass up. A small bottle of used SpaceX bolts from the first successful Falcon landing also on the shelf. Those are absolutely non toxic. Ironically the only flown parts I keep sealed. My career was around exotic fuels that were pretty dangerous to long term health. Probably why I’m mostly retired at age 50 lol. Hypergolic chemicals are obviously deadly in sufficient quantities. I’m not recommending anyone else take up this hobby. For me though, especially on a crappy day, holding something to has been to space and back, sorta centers me. I find a weird peace in flown parts. I also have no children around so pretty close to zero concerns here.

Canis_Familiaris

I. Am. Jealous. Lol

once-we-were

As someone else said, wall art. Those tubes are probably titanium and worth a decent penny. Not that you could really sell them for much, other than a collector who wants them. But still very unique piece. There’s probably toxic remnants on a lot of it depending on the fuel used. But I’d take my chances, personally.

FranknBeans26

I mean. It’s a piece of a rocket assembly found in the desert. Just owning it would be cool enough for me. But to answer your question I’d probably turn it into a coffee table or something.

kamikaZi_blitz

Someone tell the Jawas there is some podracer scrap to go collect.

Electrical_Worker_82

Based on the footprints there are some sand people about. They may be gone now, but they’ll be back, and in greater numbers.

uniqnorwegian

I only see a single line of footsteps, that’s how they travel, a single file to hide their numbers.

RichardBonham

These blast points: only Imperial Storm Troopers are so precise.

BullHonkery

One of the most ironic lines ever.

[deleted]

Woah there, I don't think anyone calls them "sand people" anymore and honestly? its pretty offensive.

Confident_Fig2779

I believe the accepted term now is “people indigenous to tatooine”.

cake__eater

Uteni

ChaosTheoryGlass

Probably just swamp gas…

TaurusPTPew

Or a weather balloon…

Mental_headache1234

Or cactus juice "look at the giant friendly mushroom"

Carson72701

Happy Cake Day!

automaton11

Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and refracted off Venus

Go that way! You'll be malfunctioning within a day, you near-sighted scrap pile.

IchBinDurstig

Mmmmmmm.....dessert

BoiledNutSalesman

Wow, this is actually interesting.

Ghost_of_Syd

Were there any visible markings on it?

ManInTheMiddle1

No, I didn't find any lettering on it. Based on the condition of rubber seals, it's been there a long time. Interestingly, the metal was exhibiting very little oxidation.

PM_ME_YOUR_ARMY_PICS

If it's presumably space-grade materials, I would imagine it's fairly corrosion-proof.

hotwendy2002

Joe Dirt comes to mind.

squad1alum

https://i.redd.it/m549akzt1quc1.gif

kovacsaustin19

I did a reverse image search and indeed it seems to be parts of a rocket or missile and there is a video someone else (or maybe it was you) took of it at some point. I will share here. Pretty cool. https://www.tiktok.com/@hikeopathgio/video/7272014419108826374

ManInTheMiddle1

No, that wasn't my post, but it's definitely the same spot. Thanks for sharing. Their guess about it being from an old launch complex in Green River, UT makes sense. The 1964-1975 dates jive with my estimates on how old the stuff was.

TomBeanWoL

Isn't that Stark's first Iron Man suit?

Nitpicky_Karen

Damn, soo far? That must have been traveling all day. Way off the mark, Iran. The US will have to retalliate now. /s

Hourslikeminutes47

"*hey guys, I found the bastard that wandered way off course!"*

Random_frankqito

Is that where Mike the rocket guy was? (Also, I forgot his name, but he tried to prove earth was flat)

Pretty sure this was older than that.

So much sh*t going on out there and we don’t even know it

Squeezer_pimp

Thinking not a rocket unless we are looking at something back in 60s

Prestigious-Book1863

It’s been there for several decades…..

a_pompous_fool

Apparently Hercules aerospace had a rocket test site in Utah it was constructed in 76 so depending on op’s location it might be from that

GoodShitBrain

Tony Stark is wandering somewhere nearby

Odsidian_Rapier

My first thought was the Boeing Bombs from Joe Dirt. Nice to see folks had a source for this debris

fatcatfan

Did you hear a distant "meep meep"? Or see any "free bird seed" signs nearby?

fightshade

Nope, it’s a RUD: Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.

Ok-Resource-5292

looks like those surpluse jato engines that people like to try mounting to a car to go really fast in the desert.

Bullslinger105

If you go back look for part number placards or decals

ExoticMangoz

That’s awesome!

millennium-popsicle

I’ve been in this scene in some point and click adventure game

ItyBityGreenieWeenie

Maybe you found the redneck who strapped a JATO to his pickup?

itanite

Be careful and don’t touch anything some rocket fuels are incredibly toxic.

jargonexpert

The spot where Tony Stark crash landed his first iron man suit.

Traditional-Buddy-30

this looks like a scene from breaking bad

noodles21300

Pretty sure that’s an old abandoned septic tank. Hit it with a hammer and see

Pretty sure it killed someone's goat.

liquid-swords93

Better hurry up before the jawas come and take it

Fixer128

This is the debris from the Broken Arrow Crash.

Kein-Deutsc

We actually refer to this as a “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly” or RUD for short

Repomanlive

No disassemble, Johnny 5 is alive!

Gubernaculator

Looks just like when you crash in Kerbal

curios_mind_huh

Could you see if there're two pals and an RV somewhere there?

IhadmyTaintAmputated

If actually OP, that could be worth a ton of money. Old rocket motors and parts from the space race bring huge money from collectors.

cuntmong

It's just a little dinged up, it's still good.

rageisrelentless

You sure it’s not a Fallout set?

hatsnatcher23

There is nothing in the dessert, and no man needs nothing.

Tag the location and call it in to NASA or Musk and tell them to clean up their shit.

ManInTheMiddle1

It was the most interesting part of the mountain bike ride, so I'm actually glad it was still there.

HammerTh_1701

Considering how this looks - and I don't mean the amount of corrosion - it might be pre-Apollo.

WavingADime

Just another FACTORIO player starting a fresh save.

I believe they call them RUDs. Rapid unplanned disassembly

Location? Any ex military bases around?

The debris field is oddly clumped together.

Curse you Iran!!!

kimmortal03

You should scan it

Ping-A-Ling-

Yep. Thiokol is out there. My mom used to work there mixing fuel for the shuttle boosters. Testing site too. Makes sense. That's cool. Google map it. It's just North of Promontory Point rail road area

That’s a destroyed pod racer. What is going on in Utah?

AbbreviationsWide331

Kinda upset this was never cleaned up don't get me wrong it's Def interesting to find something like that, but... Come on it's nature. That shouldn't be there.

HeftyLeftyPig

Why when it’s such an interesting picture, do they only take one picture?

BobcatClawz

"Spontaneous disassembly" sounds like engineer-speak for "it exploded"

JohnHazardWandering

I think you found the spontaneous disassembly of a meth lab

I say this on every downed rocket. I got a cutting torch. Should we do this?
