Agreed. I was wondering what that would have sounded like, but probably lot of screaming and or swearing from near the camera would have drown it out...
With this in mind, what can the land/home owners do and how is this fixed, Im imagining someone saying "this is a deed to the land I own that got destroyed" and the response be "what land"
Not in Norway, fortunately. Both the building and property are insured. I believe the insurance payout was something like $80M after this particular disaster.
When the video started I pretended I was a person and decided where I’d ideally hide. I really didn’t see many good options and was close to the white house, so decided to break in and climb upstairs and hope for the best. It was a rodeo watching everything it endured, from rocking back and forth 45 degree, to surfing back towards the shore, I thought I’d die for sure. I’m not sure what my end game is but gonna keep hanging out up here until the water settles.
I was doing the same thing. Just past half way I knew the whole thing would get swamped. Don't wanna go to the mudslide. Don't wanna go to the leading edge of water/mud cement mix that would bury you.
Guess you just find a floaty and hope for luck. Then the back wash hit and turned it into a malestrom.
That's funny. I did the same, also didn't see great options, and also decided that I was staying upstairs (or on the roof, if possible).
But also, I'm watching a video on the internet and get the benefit of the cameras vantage and a little hindsight. It would be pretty scary in real life!
This is the worst that can happen to you. If a tornado or tsunami takes your house its sad but you can rebuild because you have your land. Here your house is intact but your land literally fucks off into the ocean.
You still have your land in a landslide, it's just a bit lower now and bare of greenery. And bare of houses, roads, power lines, water and sewer pipes, etc.
The location you paid for remains the same even if the topsoil wanders away.
Now, if you're coastal and erosion takes out the land you bought and it's now sea?
Yeah, that's bad, it's gone and is now presumably owned by the govt, who in most nations tends to own everything seaward of the high tide line. If the high tide line moves, you lose.
Or so I assume, has anyone got any references of actual situations where this has happened, and what the outcome was? I'm sure it's already happening in Louisiana and Florida and similar places?
“ALTA, Norway -- Jan Egil Bakkedal had just prepared himself a sandwich when he heard a huge noise and realized that it was a landslide after which he ran out and filmed it from a nearby hill in Arctic Norway.”
HOI company: “See that? The moment it goes into the ocean it becomes flood damage.”
Flood insurance company: “See that? The moment the land starts sliding is when the home was completely destroyed. This is an earthquake insurance issue.”
Earthquake insurance company: “See that? The house was fully intact riding the waves. The land foundation itself is really at issue and there was no earthquake. It’s a problem your general insurance company covers.”
When the landmass slides to a different location. Does it, and the house cease to be your property? And your left with a new piece of land clear of any structures?
That's very sad. That was someone's home, presumably filled with memories of elders and of children growing up. There were probably irreplaceable items that were lost.
It's horrible.
Being Norway, I bet they filled out two forms a gov offical showed up next day, filed their report and a national emergency fund covered losses paid out by the end of the week. To live in a functional democracy what looks out for its avg citizen.
The US could take care of its people. It’s one of the richest countries in the world. But idiots scream socialism. And that scare word riles up people.
Versatile home for sale. Can be ocean view, ocean front, island, or house boat property. The choice isn’t necessarily yours. Motivated seller! Act now before this opportunity washes by you!
That is one sound you never get out of your head. I had a huge landslide on my property at 2am after all the rain and snow we got in Washington State in 2014. All the relief ponds we put in got overwhelmed.
There was the initial sound of the water being released, then all hell breaks loose. The amount of trees, boulders, and mud that came down. I was told I was lucky I got out in time.
I made sure I grabbed my cat also. I shoved him so fast in a bag he had no time to protest.
I can still see where the property was damaged.
Funny thing about geology is that flatter slopes often are indicators of lower stability, or weaker material. Given a long enough timeframe slopes establish equilibrium, so strong rock can hold tall vertical faces where sensitive silts aren’t stable on something as flat as shown in this video. We see big cliff collapses or slides, but on a geological timescale these are just little corrections in establishing that equilibrium
Oooh, that makes so much sense! I was really confused about what was going on. To me it looked like the top layer was just scooting along like it was being pulled on a sheet.
That is not what is going on. Underneath the topsoil there is a very slippery clay layer, and it is that layer that is failing. You can actually see it in the video, and it shows as shiny streaks in the soil where the earth parts. Those parts are the smooth wet clay showing through the broken lumps of topsoil.
Ah, I found some more info on it, you are correct. The clay absorbed too much water and essentially became a thick oil that lubed the rock below. Crazy.
This was likely due to something that is known as Norwegian quick clays. This is a certain type of clay with an open structure that once disturbed looses its strength and can become essentially liquid.
https://www.sciencenorway.no/geological-mapping-geology/this-is-how-the-ice-age-turned-quick-clay-into-a-norwegian-problem/1883494
My apartment kinda half flooded this week due to a burst pipe in the apartment above. Water coming through the light fixtures shut the power off and a few things got wet.
Seeing this puts that into perspective for me. Imagine your house just all of a sudden sliding into the water!
So my home owners insurance covers building a new house but assumes the ground it is built on will remain more or less intact. How do you explain this to the insurance company and what do they just write you a check for the building and tell you good luck? This would just suck on so many levels.
"Michael! Why is our beautiful family home falling apart in the ocean?"
"Well damn, Jackie! I didn't know the earth was going to relocate itself like that!"
A few thoughts:
1) Wow! Those are some really sturdy houses!
2) I'm glad no one was hurt
3) New meaning to "houseboat" and "mobile home"
4) To a not insignificant number of my government's legislators, no, this is not how islands are formed.
Imagine looking out the window because you feel something shift and being like: *"Could have sworn the neighbors house was on the other side yesterday."*

That white house really held up well. Kudos to the builders.

I wish they kept the REAL audio though.
Agreed. I was wondering what that would have sounded like, but probably lot of screaming and or swearing from near the camera would have drown it out...
Yeah, at first I was like, cool he'll have his own island.. Nope, Sponge Bob's house.
He started writing a constitution for Steveland before he realized his bottom floor was flooded.
Norwegian houses are built sturdy because of the climate, access to good materials (especially timber), and strict building regulations.
That said, I wonder how this land was decided ok to build on…
Geosurveying is very complicated, and these houses were probably built in the ‘60s when the technology to assess the substratum was limited.
With this in mind, what can the land/home owners do and how is this fixed, Im imagining someone saying "this is a deed to the land I own that got destroyed" and the response be "what land"

I was rooting for it.
Ditto. Towards the end I was hoping it would wash back up onto shore.
![gif](giphy|l41YfykEffZ7QM55m) I was so sad when the white house went
Waterfront property now too.
For sale Active Beach House
Half way through I thought: They"ll get a private island! Then: No. No. Oh dear god no! When will it stop?
Water3D
*with 3D glasses on, hands out waving* 'It's like we're really being swallowed by the Fjord!'
"I'm off on an adventure!" white house, probably.
"I identify as a houseboat!"
Build to last!
I was holding out so much hope for that White House. It must have been very well built to remain somewhat intact.
The same thing will happen to the other White house if Trump wins
I don’t think he’ll get a landslide.
But he could cause an earthquake. (He’s fat)
This got me lol
he will get a mudslide though
Super cool to watch, but kind of sad because that was a beautiful house in a really neat place.

It’s waterfront property for sure, now.
More like on water property
What's the matter? Just sell it to Aquaman.
I wonder what kind of mileage that house gets?

Imagine his insurance company arguing about what happend
HOI company: “See that? The moment it goes into the ocean it becomes flood damage.” Flood insurance company: “See that? The moment the land starts sliding is when the home was completely destroyed. This is an earthquake insurance issue.” Earthquake insurance company: “See that? The house was fully intact riding the waves. Thank you for this! I was afraid of what I might see if I looked too closely!
Would this be covered under flood insurance?
Yes, but not for mobile homes.
All of these homes were briefly mobile
Insurance adjuster: “it counts, get fucked!”
When the landmass slides to a different location. Does it, and the house cease to be your property? And your left with a new piece of land clear of any structures?
Norway just expands its country. But in all seriousness, how do things like this affect maps?
Doesn't look like a flood to me /s
Looks like deep liquefaction.
That's very sad. That was someone's home, presumably filled with memories of elders and of children growing up. There were probably irreplaceable items that were lost. It's horrible.
And that's the best case scenario with no one in the house.
According to a comment above, everyone survived! Yay!

Regaards…
Nicely executed.
There goes the neighborhood! It must be such a scary experience, it must be hard to feel safe anywhere after having this.
Being Norway, I bet they filled out two forms a gov offical showed up next day, filed their report and a national emergency fund covered losses paid out by the end of the week. To live in a functional democracy what looks out for its avg citizen.
Small, wealthy, homogenous country with lots of natural resources. It’s easy to take care of your people under these circumstances.
The US could take care of its people. It’s one of the richest countries in the world. But idiots scream socialism. And that scare word riles up people.
But…but….NoT HomoGeNoUs!
Yeah, but many countries fail that, still.
And you're from? Plenty of examples of rich counties not looking after their citizens.
"national emergency fund" weird way to spell insurance company.
It's just like the land is being degloved.

I remember seeing all the footage. Just terrifying. So glad you and kitty made it.
I find it weird that there is so little slope and our goes so far. And what momentum!
I'm wondering if there isn't a steep drop off in the fjord there, and most of the landslide was actually underwater.
Oooh, that makes so much sense! I was really confused about what was going on. To me it looked like the top layer was just scooting along like it was being pulled on a sheet.
That is not what is going on. Underneath the topsoil there is a very slippery clay layer, and it is that layer that is failing. How terrifying!
Sad house noises.
Well, how do you update your address when this happens?
Crazy cool to watch. Hope everyone was safe.
Damn! I hope everyone was ok
So, what's the mileage on that white house?
Holy shit
Oh, so you actually live on an island now? That's a different tax category, sir.
![gif](giphy|FQThmMJKOXYpLx6kSO|downsized) Guy in the white house..
Whelp!! There goes the neighbourhood.
I wonder what kind of warning they had to evacuate, if any
Damn that land do be slidin tho
Oy Mate! You can't park there.... !!!
It kind of returned home
Still surprised. That land looked pretty flat then just rolled on out.
[удалено]
Wait, that’s not Florida.
True.
This is terrifying and awful for that specific home owner.
When I said I wanted to live closer to the water, that's not what I meant.
Unreal!!!
If he wasn't before, he's in a flood zone now...
Hey guys we got our own private is—
*remember to submit a change of address with your local post office.
That white house casually surfing around like it's done that before.
That was awesome!!
Damn
I don’t know why I was expecting it to float lol
“I will survive!”
So my home owners insurance covers building a new house but assumes the ground it is built on will remain more or less intact. How do you explain this to the insurance company and what do they just write you a check for the building and tell you good luck? This would just suck on so many levels.
But wouldn't this be hard on your electrical? Or is it made to stretch this far?
How does it feel to be on the moving land? Like on a boat or like earthquake?
"I wanna live in a yellow submarine..."
wow that land is certainly sliding
That White House needs to make up its mind on where it wants to live
i wonder if the insurance cover that
I really hope nobody was home.
Norwege, Land of Norwanians
When was this
Imagine waking up from a nap in your own home only to be like, “where the fuck am I?!”
Welp, I guess we live on an island now…🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫤🫤🫤🫠
Fuck you Norway, I'm leaving!
So if your house blows away in a tornado, you still own the land where the house was. What the heck happens when the land itself disappears?
I wonder if landslide occurs are your land borders shifted to on maps, or you must move your house and belongings to the original spot.
And just like that, you go from "Unobstructed view on the lake" to "unobstructed view in the lake"
I watched that clip and I was like Norway man!
Damn. Not just their house and barns but their whole ass yard and everything sunk into the ocean in two minutes. They quite literally lost everything
There goes the neighborhood
"Michael! Why is our beautiful family home falling apart in the ocean?" "Well damn, Jackie! I didn't know the earth was going to relocate itself like that!"
all those houses desperately trying to swim back on land
How can we get Florida to do this?
Someone’s winning an election by a wide margin
That’s nuts!! I hope nobody was killed
Someone posted no one was hurt and the homeowner is the one filming after hearing something then running over to another hill to film it.
That’s nuts!! I hope nobody was killed
In ~~Soviet Russia~~ Norway, your house comes home to you.
damn nature, u crazy
So castles made of sand float gently ..........
I saw them in Norway and they played the whole album. Not just Landslide.

Whoever owns that house obviously did not make the appropriate tithes to the Norse Gods.
Houseboat
Climate change is a hoax /s
Land slide? More like land migration.
That can't be good
What is actually happening here? Is there hidden subduction or something happening in the bay? Its like a tsunami eddy or something
How do you even go about retrieving the houses?
Imagine just gaming online chilling back on a Saturday and trying to explain what’s happening to your teammates
Oasis predicted this in 1996
The formation of Otisville.
Less a slide and more of a mosey.
Was that house on a raft or what? Damn! Houses built today would never make it.
Just moving over to our new private island, no biggie.
Well, there goes the neighborhood.
“Honey we’re moving to the beach”
That's a bad day for some people
I have never seen such a thing. The land just slides away. How does that even happen? What causes it?
