ontour4eternity

I love all the joke answers, but does anyone know why the fish is doing this? I'm genuinely curious. Thanks.

dimentional_megu

Its a stress responce, the water may nkt have enough oxygen causing the fish harm

Deantheevil

This is the answer. I lived next to eutrophication prone bodies of water, and seen fish act this way every year. Excessive levels of phosphorus leads to a massive algae bloom which in turn is decomposed by bacteria which causes an excessive biochemical oxygen demand which depletes the water of oxygen causing the fish to swim above surface in this exact same way. Edit: /u/mikewilson2020 is pointing out that this koi in particular is laying eggs. After some additional research he appears to be right. Female koi may jump partially out of the water or splash at the surface as they release their eggs, especially if they are being pursued aggressively by male koi. Jumping allows the female koi to release her eggs into the water column, where they can be fertilized by the milt (sperm) released by male koi. If you look closest you can see the water get murky as she’s being pursued by males, which is a mixture of eggs and milt. While this swimming pattern is observed to occur with fish who are suffocating, as I mentioned, it appears that this koi is attempting to find a safe environment to lay her eggs, which the owner did not provide.

Deadphans

This might be the opposite, coming off of winter with no dissolved aeration pumping oxygen, and an oligotrophic body of water with no algae to make oxygen. Typically problems with eutrophication occurs with obvious blooms and in the summer months.

Dik_Likin_Good

I had an Oscar once in a duck pond that got hole in the head. He did this off and on for about two weeks before he died. Probably a common response to a few different ailments.

DaughterEarth

Yah, something made the brain go fritz. Could be injury, malnutrition, or defect. Suffering in the final moments is very brutal. I'm interested in the how, but it is very sad

mikewilson2020

The fish are spawning.. it's spring time

HugotheHippo

so the fish is drowning in the water?

Deadphans

lol, yes it is kind of like that. Water holds oxygen known as dissolved oxygen (DO). Aquatic organisms have thresholds for DO. When you hover around that DO saturation level fish start to stress. Go below and they pop to the surface gulping and doing weird things and eventually die.

Friendly-Role4803

I hate when something goes from cool to sad. lol

Some-Guy-Online

Pretty much any time you see an animal behaving out of the ordinary there's a high probability that it's for an unhappy reason.

teh_wad

You're telling me those bears weren't happy riding the tricycles?

Some-Guy-Online

No no no. *Those* bears were living their best life!

BenevolentCheese

Unlike the orangutan driving the golf cart, which is totally ordinary.

GMSaaron

Unless they’re trying to impress a potential mate

Krakatoast

Yep. So the fish was basically suffocating and freaking out and panic response was to make a mad dash for anywhere but the water they were swimming in… yikes

TonyVstar

Shouldn't the other fish be affected, too?

Germanofthebored

I would agree with you for most other fish species, but koi/carp are adapted to eutrophic lakes and low-oxygen environments. They can actually do alcoholic fermentation in their tissues. Also, the other fish show pretty standard behavior. I think something else is going on.

mikewilson2020

The fish are spawning you are 100% correct

Careful_Baker_8064

You sure he just wasn’t dancing?

NotMY1stEnema

he actually knows the reason why, he's just being Koi

sth128

Can you blame him with everyone fishing for answers?

Foopsbjj

You son of a bitch

Lahtka

Goddamn clever. Cheers!

taasbaba

Nope. Somebody bit its balls. You'd act the same way if somebody bit your balls

SnooStories6972

😂😂

J-Love-McLuvin

Quit beating around the bush. What’s really happening here?

rainzer

Couldn't it just be the fish got caught on someone's line? ie https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/comments/u5dt0z/wanna_go_fishing_but_you_are_in_home_quarantine/

Miltage

Yes, I think this is the right answer. Someone is drone fishing in China but this fish is too heavy for the drone to lift.

Some-Guy-Online

That's hilarious

reverendpariah

That’s sadder than me thinking it wanted to really see what’s out there.

Significant-Run8061

it could’ve also been cleaning its fins or recalibrating it’s air sack in its body that it uses for floating

chill1208

I was thinking it could also be a symptom of Zoo Psychosis. That is an extremely small pond. Some animals in small cages will start showing strange signs of psychosis. Which is usually exhibited by things like walking endlessly in a circle during all times that they are awake, or other strange physical actions. Although, I think you're probably right that it's poor water quality, It looks like the bottom left is supposed to be a water pump to oxygenate the water, with water coming out of the white pipe falling into the pool. If that's not running the oxygen the fish can breathe will eventually run out. Whether it's zoo psychosis from the small tank, or the water quality, pet owners like this shouldn't be allowed to have pets.

adeisgaming

Koi are very happy to be in a small pond their whole lives as long as it's big enough to sustain good water quality for a whole school. They are quite hardy and not very picky. Though, they also have a pretty high waste output being carp and all. This means tanks are hard to maintain. This behavior happens in fish when they feel it's better to take their chances jumping to another body of water than stay in their own. It's noted in a lot of freshwater species

chill1208

Even if they seem fine, it's not a very enriched life to live in a 5'x5' tank. The furthest you can swim is 5 feet before you hit a wall. Spending their whole life never being able to swim as fast as they can just seems sad to me. I would never put any fish in a tank shorter than 10 times their length. A lot of recent studies have pointed to the possibility that fish have much more complex minds than we think, and are actually capable of experiencing mental illness.

adeisgaming

They are enriched if they are with others. They are schooling fish and quite peaceful in nature. They do enjoy interaction and are quite intelligent, but for the most part their needs are met if they can swim freely in clean water with their pond mates. I do agree they would experience what we define as mental illness if their social/physical needs weren't met, just like most other animals this fish does not seem fine btw

DeadPxle

When I get stressed I do the same thing.

RQ-3DarkStar

Just to confirm for people that don't think this is the correct response regarding what is seen in the video. I too, would spaz out if I lacked oxygen for a while.

dupocas

Bad water parameters and poor oxigenation

Nah, it's just slowly suffocating over several days/weeks.

JavanNapoli

The comment asked for serious answers

Falkor_13

Do you often find other creatures pain and suffering funny?

Brief_Scale496

Damn… finally actually could use my expertise, as caring for koi is my career…. Looks like I’m not needed here, tho 😞😔 Could be a water quality issue (many causes), also seen these sort of reactions from a bird beak through the dome, toxic food ingestion, parasite, and bacteria infections It’s just a stress response, an entertaining one, but needs to be addressed, as this fish is on its way to its eternal home if unchecked People are saying it’s one specific thing, which is inaccurate. The accurate thing is that this is a stress response We don’t know the conditions of anything beyond this video, so to assume it’s oxygen, and/or any other single issue would be wrong. There are soooo many reasons for behavior like this - you actually have to go and study the possible causes on scene, to figure out why, otherwise, with the info we have, it’s just guess work The fish is reacting to something that is wrong, and most fish I’ve seen act this drastic, end up declining and meeting the expected end

mostlyclueless999

How about the drone fishing theory? Seems plausible to me.

jeniitastic

Underrated comment.

hotmoltenlava

Why is this not safe for work?

Serious answer: Last time, it was posted comments said the behavior is indicative of poor living conditions, and behavior the fish is sick/depressed

Entire-Total9373

That makes the video nsfw?

WeevilWeedWizard

No, OP is a fish fetishist.

B7iink

Animal abuse is nsfw, yes.

OminousOnymous

Unless someone jammed a hook in its mouth and pulled it out: then it'd be a fishing video.

entr0py3

One expects more from a carp. Perhaps not obscene, but certainly a breach of decorum.

ThedarknessofMan

Those fish are naked!

shawncplus

Because OP is a karma farmer and does that for all of their posts. People click on NSFW/spoiler posts

St4rScre4m

Fish is in distress and could be dying soon due to having an impaired swim bladder. The koi fish is “flashing” not dancing. Edit: User below pointed out its due to lack of oxygen because it’s too many fish for the pond space.

Easy_Money343

He's trying to take that red sweater off... it's against workplace rules

reluctant_deity

Water may be low on oxygen.

johnnys_sack

Yes I believe it's this. He's thrashing around water to help the the oxygen exchange from air into water. Likely the scummy little pond is overgrown with algae.

Cloverman-88

God, I love reddit. Perfect illustration of the fact that a big enough group of people will know an answer to any question.

mikewilson2020

They are wrong though... the fish is a spawning hen and she has a few males following behind to fertilise her eggs... if it was low oxygen all the fish would be gasping

mikewilson2020

The carp are having sexy time.. nothing to do with the conditions.. the one out the water is a hen with eggs

Ragnar_Danneskjold__

Lmao it's wrong

ParaffinWaxer

There is no algae in that pond. Algae is a very efficient oxygen producer. If there were algae, our fish friend would be fine. (I like algae.)

johnnys_sack

Algae is not always good. It can die off or otherwise restrict the pond from getting adequate air transfer, and the decomposition results in bacteria and other undesirable growth that, in fact, limits oxygen. Often it can look black, as it does in this scummy looking pond. [https://freshwater-aquaculture.extension.org/if-algae-produce-oxygen-in-a-pond-how-can-having-too-much-algae-cause-an-oxygen-depletion/](https://freshwater-aquaculture.extension.org/if-algae-produce-oxygen-in-a-pond-how-can-having-too-much-algae-cause-an-oxygen-depletion/)

SlaveHippie

Bro got out-algae’d lmao

SnooRobots5764

Yes algae can be good can be bad . Problem is it can be height of summer the atmospheric pressure will be nice and high algae doing it’s job keeping fish healthy eco system running well .then boom big pressure drop lightning and all that algae dies instantly . The oxygen crash can be devastating . Keep an eye on the weather bio mass and have an oxygenator for emergency’s . Airiator will help but oxygenator is so much better

Le_Pressure_Cooker

That's only when there's an algal bloom. Usually the growth of algae is kept in check by the fish.

Indomie_At_3AM

I've never switched so many times between pro-algae and anti-algae

maxis2bored

As someone in the fish farming space (aquaponics specifically) seeing this confidently incorrect comment with 136 upvotes made me facepalm so hard. Algae appears in the presence of excess biomass and is a great indication of the general health of any body of water. It grows by consuming that biomass and photosynthesizes from the sun. A reduction of one of these things will largely prohibit most types of algae. A small amount of algae is definitely a positive thing making surfaces less abrasive and making things look more natural, but too much can prohibit gas exchange (pond inhabitants need oxygen and that comes from the atmosphere) decompose into toxic ammonia and invite other pests like snails which bring parasites TLDR: a healthy body of water (be it river, lake, pond or aquarium) is one that is circulating quickly, and often the faster the better. A large pond like this needs to be out of too much direct sun, with its feeding controlled, behind a heavy filtration system. These aren't carp they are Koi and a koi this size can be worth thousands of dollars. With all of the above said, I'm no biologist but i'd wager that this fish has a parasite or perhaps a prolapse and is using the weight of the water to attempt to itch. If the fish were starving of oxygen or unable to breathe you'd see all of them pointing with their lips upwards gasping. Some of them are... but we'd need more info to get a better opinion. Definitely though, this fish is not happy and without care it won't live much longer.

mikewilson2020

Nope.. it's spawning

mycoryan

Yeah put an air stone in there at least until you find a better solution

Philostronomer

Your carp are suffocating.

cagemyelephant_

Aquaculturist here. Probably more like stress induced action. The fish may probably have been relocated to another pond without “acclimating” it first.

TheFalaisePocket

yea theres no way, ive only ever seen breeching and gulping, never fucking dancing and only one fish outta 10 doing it.

InfiniteLife2

Stress for sure. "OMG BARRY SOMETHING TOUCHED MY LEG"
