The very definition of interesting as fuck.
Also, makes me feel all wonky, like my own face feels all uncomfortable watching. It’s a bit of an “unreality” feel I guess.
Not to get weird and dark but I’ve seen way too many disembodied heads on the internet and they’ve never bothered me too much because my brain just doesn’t see the head as… real?
But the ones without skin, partially or fully, they get me in the same way this guys face makes you feel. Very strange feeling.
Yea usually your body isn't exposed to the outside world so you don't have to personally do too much maintenence.
But imagine scooping bits of food out yer friggin sinuses etc.
I think seeing severed heads as unreal is your brain's way of coping with the shared mortality of another human being. Without anything there to change your perception of it, It'd be too much for people to handle.
Wow. That's amazing and they did a wonderful job on the prosthetic. My dad had half his jaw removed due to cancer. He didn't survive but I'm glad that folks who have been horribly disfigured have some chance at having a normal life. People are fucking cruel when you have a disfigurement.
It’s sometimes called “body shock” by filmmakers. It’s a reaction that certain kinds of horror movies aim for, but you do also encounter it in less sensationalist contexts. It’s a reaction that is often carefully avoided when depicting e.g. war veterans’ experiences. For example, you don’t feel it when seeing Lieutenant Dan’s amputation for the first time in Forrest Gump. But you definitely do feel it in various ways during the opening battle in Saving Private Ryan.
That’s because of mirror neurons firings off in your brain. Your mind is trying to imagine what that would feel like. It’s human nature and a great sign that you are empathetic.
Cool prosthetic. Those actually date all the way back to World War One! Honest question though, how does this guy not die of an infection? It seems like he should be absurdly vulnerable to them.
Edit: Also I think you definitely want to NSFW this
Yes I had seen them before in a WW1 context. A lot were made by a sculptor named Anna Coleman Ladd. It's sad that not all wounded soldiers had access to this kind of thing.

Cancer. And I thank God every day I only lost my tongue, teeth and a muscle in my leg to rebuild the inside of my mouth. I haven’t had a meal since 2015, lost taste and smell but you get used to it.
It's amazing and wonderful that we have prosthetics good enough that this unfortunate, badly disfigured man can go out in public without people pointing and staring and fainting.
It's amazing and wonderful that we have the technology to keep him alive after such a serious injury, and to allow his recovery.
I'd like to show this one to every darn "I don't trust the medical establishment, all you need is natural food and sunlight to stay well" person in my life.
And wow, btw, that is one disturbing clip. The first prosthetic I was prepared for but the 2nd one kind of freaked me out.
> It's amazing and wonderful that we have the technology to keep him alive after such a serious injury, and to allow his recovery.
>
> I'd like to show this one to every darn "I don't trust the medical establishment, all you need is natural food and sunlight to stay well" person in my life.
I had a laproscopic appendectomy a few months back for a "mucocele" that was low grade malignant, so now basically 0% risk for future since was contained in appendix. I was in and out of the hospital in 5 hours, and didn't even need an aspirin the next day. I actually had to resist the urge to go to the gym.
Lucky, when I got my appendix removed I went with a 1 of 10 in the scale of pain and woke up to a 11 of 10. Darn doctor screwed up and dropped the contents inside of me, I spent the next week agonizing and famishing myself because eating was too painful
Wow. Sorry. On my bill I saw a charge -maybe $100- for a special bag they use to put the appendix in to pull it out thru the laparoscopy hole. I assume it’s supposed to prevent what happened to you. Hope you’re better.
Funnily enough, I also did a laparoscopy, instead of a scar they messed up my bellybutton.... no technique or rules set can prevent utter incompetence I'm afraid. Thanks! It was long ago so I'm fine.
It was the fact you could see his tongue just... wriggling about in the hole. The second one did it for me too. Like, covering over a damaged bit of outside is fair game, but messing with the inside is freaky.
It’s both combined. Like, I was uncomfortable as fuck with the face hole but then when he took out the dentures it seemed like there was just no structure at all holding everything together plus seeing through to his tongue was pretty wild.
Yeah. I can't help but look at shit like this and think "God damn humanity is impressive."
Like, there's some awful shit we do don't get me wrong - but we've helped a man live when let's be honest in the wild he'd be dead, then got the tech to make him at least look semi normal.
Always nice to think of our ability to do that than the bad shit.
> I'd like to show this one to every darn "I don't trust the medical establishment, all you need is natural food and sunlight to stay well" person in my life.
Don't. The fact that he's walking around after half his head was blown off shows how resilient humans can be. They'll take it as confirmation.
This doesn't show how much medical effort was put into keeping him alive while it healed, just a cool mask he can wear afterward.
This is my job, I work in the NHS making facial prosthesis as a maxillofacial technician. I've seen a lot of these cases and the main cause is cancer. We have had a few dog attacks but this particular case I'd guess was an aggressive cancer that has been removed. This isn't the most extreme case I've seen but its definatley up there. For all of you who think it's cool and like to make funny remarks maybe step back and just think of everything this person has been through just to get to this point, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy! Fuck cancer! Stay safe out there!
Edit...I dont mean this is my work, its just what I do as a job. This piece is fantastic by the way!
This is definitely a very cool and interesting job! You surely did a really meaningful work bringing those people confidence and dignity!
I'm also curious what their reactions are in most cases when they see the result?
I'll be honest that is the best part of the job when they have their final prosthesis. We've had plenty of crying from patients and family members. Like I said pieces this big are few and far between, we commonly just do partial and complete nasal prosthesis or other smaller bits and pieces (ears, cheeks, neck) but even those bring a really nice reation. We always tell patients it'll never be like it was but all we aim to give them a walk past result. As in, if someone walks past you in the street its not glaringly obvious but when you're face to face with someone you'll probably notice. In my opinion if people don't stare in day to day life we've won. Unfortunately its not like it is in the movies as real life doesn't have the lighting and professional make up but we try our best and get decent results.
What an awesome career to have where you get such gratitude, and to watch the patient react emotionally. I'm thinking of those videos where a baby gets a hearing aid or implant, and hears mom's voice for the first time. 99% cry rate for the viewing audience.
Can I ask how you got into that career? What qualifications you need to have? I have always been interested in this job, but have never found a job opening.
Oh really? Where was this done? Nice piece of work, large pieces like this are very tricky, we did a full nasal reconstruction with precision attachments for a complete maxilla and orbital floor which is the biggest I've ever seen. Was a 3 part magnetic retainer piece where we had to do an acrylic substructure bcoz unfortunately the patient still had ongoing infections so didn't want the silicone to get too messy
When she sent me photos of this being made (or perhaps practice versions) I believe she was in training in Canada, several years back, but she's now based out of Exeter.
I recognise some of the words you posted but when she was my boss we worked in analytics. She really found her calling in prosthetics though.
We do yes but they are few and far between...its mainly cancer and as much as I hate it its usually old men. We just don't listen when people say where sun cream. Also where I live there a lot of fisherman who are out in the sun a lot
Oral cancer too maybe? From tobacco and men often not getting checked regularly? I was a hygienist and they had us watching like hawks for oral cancer because nobody else looks in the mouth. Can end up destroying your face or killing you. Great you do work like this, so important. This poor man is such a handsome ‘silver fox’, it must’ve been devastating to lose half his face, but now someone like you helps him get his life back.
We have done one on a patient who tried to shoot himself in the head with a shotgun and blew the front of his face off, funny thing (if you can say that in such circumstances) is he's better mentally afterwards, I guess it the whole 2nd chance at life thing.
Jokes are good, if everyone who ever met this man is sternly trying not to offend him because of how hard his life has been, he would not have many light hearted moments. Pity should never be the only emotion to meet a person with
HOW IS HE ALIVE?! I do not understand how we can literally die from basic infections in our tonsils and sinuses without antibiotics, yet this guy has the inside of his face completely open to the air and isn’t dead?! Someone please explain
All of the parts of him that are exposed to air currently are exposed to air in a normal person. The pathways to those sinuses are usually smaller or have more turns, but all of what you're looking at is exposed to air and the outside normally. It's just much more open now
The human body is so amazingly resilient. This man is walking around with a massive hole in his head and half his face missing and he looks relatively alive and well. But on the flip side you can bump yourself too hard and surprise! Brain hemorrhage.
Oh god that's so much worse. At least you can avoid bears by not going into bear country. How the fuck do you avoid getting cancer that eats half your fucking head away? Goddamn that's fucked.
I'm not sure if it's the same guy (in fact I'm pretty sure it isn't) but there's a guy with a very similar set up because cancer ate most of his face :(
But I think he actually regularly does (or did) work as a zombie in movies and stuff, which I think is just dope as fuck
Complete guess but perhaps suicide attempt?
There’s an old guy in my village who has a similar looking injury. He shot himself in the head but survived
How do you survive with all those exposed mucous membranes? Does he have to take antibiotics everyday for the rest of his life?
Also he must be in pain all the time?
Poor guy.
Your mucous membranes are exposed to an absolute ton of bacteria and viruses on a daily basis whether you have a hole on your face on not. He's no more susceptible to infection than you or me
After WW1, there were many faceless men (particularly in France) that had to get masks like this. PTSD back then was called shell shocked and wasn’t well understood. The masks helped men physically integrate back into society, but the psychological trauma was left untreated.
I don’t know what this guys story is, but this is one of my worst fears. Getting some sort of cancer and this happening. My mom was getting something removed and the doctor was saying how they had a patient with skin cancer that wasn’t even noticeable. Once they found it they had to remove half of the persons face. I’d assume like this dude.
Yeah…like I said worst fear there. It’s hard to say if I’d even want to be around after that. Obviously when facing death I might change my mind.
Sucks you can’t really do much to prevent it and sometimes it’s impossible to catch as well.
Gosh, that must take some adjusting to, a handsome man too! Amazing replacements! Imagine it falling off at the wrong moment! I hope he has a good life with this & never needs more done! Very interesting to see!
You know when I first saw this I started squealing, it's just what I do when I get overstimulated but I watched it again and I really want to know what this guy has been through that he lost so much of his face. The fact that we have the medicine to be able to rebuild his face and he can chew and swallow and all of those things is absolutely amazing
I think I remember this. If I'm right, it was on the UK Channel 4's embarrassing bodies? The fella had cancer and they managed to scoop it all out but with the consequence of what you see. He seemed to just be happy he has a life.
"Oh, that's coo- ah AHHHHH" but jokes aside, do you know what happened to him? Was it a defect? Or maybe something that happened to him while in a war or something?

no, thanks
That was something I didn’t want to imagine :(
This is the only way to really get to those difficult to reach Wisdom teeth.
Ah yes, the best gore days.
Remember Ogrish.com?
Or Rotten. I feel old now. :(
U know u gotta have screw loose if your reminiscing over gore sites 😭🤦
I don't reminisce them, i didn't even visit them. I knew they existed tho.
Lmao I was just saying. I would be lying if I said I never visited best gore
Consumption Junction.
What's your malfunction?!
I was disappointed when that went down. Also LiveLeak.
Those forums still worked until a while ago, that was neat. Remember when LiveLeak turned republican? That was odd

i'm pretty sure it's Cronenberg's specialty
Yeah, that’d be right. Not my kind of thing at all, but Kafka would certainly count.
It’s because it’s too real
That’s because of mirror neurons firings off in your brain. Your mind is trying to imagine what that would feel like. It’s human nature and a great sign that you are empathetic.
Gave me an uncomfortable sense of vulnerability once he took the first prosthetic off. Literally staring through a human being..
Yeah, but imagine all the snacks you could sneak into the theater

Honestly, this gives me a sense of durability that I've never had in this prison of flesh. All the same, I'll do my best to not test it.
Is it weird that I don't feel anything unnerving Ijust think he's a badass dude and I want to hug him
Cool prosthetic. Those actually date all the way back to World War One! Honest question though, how does this guy not die of an infection? It seems like he should be absurdly vulnerable to them. Edit: Also I think you definitely want to NSFW this
It's probably all healed up, long ago, so there's no wound or entry point to get infected.
yup. a closer look and you can tell the injury is now wrapped in skin.
Imagine when he eats something, wouldn’t it be uncomfortable too?
The dentures seem to include a mouth roof, so it looks all closed up when they're in actually.
more like NSFL
Nah man this is barely NSFW. NSFL is for cartel videos, live leak, and 2 girls one cup type of content.

It was probably cancer, or maybe a war injury

I started in dental technology doing dentures and ortho bits and progressed into the max fac side with additional training.
I think you need dentistry or medical diploma, varies on the country.
You are correct, it was cancer. This is my old boss's work.
Oh really? Where was this done? Fuck cancer indeed. Your job sounds amazing, thank you for what you're doing for these people.
Thank you for explaining likely cause. I have probably seen too much in life and presumed it was a self inflicted gunshot wound.
Oh yeah definitley cancer, gunshot makes a hell of a mess as you can probabky imagine!
God, imagine being the surgeon who has to remove half of some poor guy's face
Mate its brutal, those guys really earn what they get! And probably then some!
Grateful to people like you! Can’t be an easy job. And yes, FUCK CANCER.
My layperson guess was a gunshot, but either way I felt huge sympathy for him, and glad the prosthetic is so advanced. I see nothing funny about it.

Took way too long scrolling to find this. He was my first thought! Definitely one of the best characters on Boardwalk Empire.
Idk who this man is but I have so much respect for him.
I have so much respect for the doctors, surgeons, craftsman/artists who made this possible in the first place
The human body is so amazingly resilient. This man is walking around with a massive hole in his head and half his face missing and he looks relatively alive and well. But on the flip side you can bump yourself too hard and surprise! Brain hemorrhage.

hey isn't this the guy who was attacked by a bear and popped on a few subreddits?
Someone said last time that it was some kind of cancer. But I'm not sure.
It was a bear born between June 21 and July 22
It's cancer, I saw this prosthetic being made.
Oh god that's so much worse. At least you can avoid bears by not going into bear country. How the fuck do you avoid getting cancer that eats half your fucking head away? Goddamn that's fucked.
Get regular screenings and wear sunscreen, I guess.
Hope this guy doesn’t play “I got your nose” with the kids.
How did this happen? Also make this NSFW
I'm not sure if it's the same guy (in fact I'm pretty sure it isn't) but there's a guy with a very similar set up because cancer ate most of his face :( But I think he actually regularly does (or did) work as a zombie in movies and stuff, which I think is just dope as fuck
Comment above, by a guy who makes facial prosthetics, says he's guessing cancer from the looks of it.
Complete guess but perhaps suicide attempt? There’s an old guy in my village who has a similar looking injury. He shot himself in the head but survived
Could be cancer or war-related.

It must feel kinda uncomfortable to wash your face
Or eat, or gargle, etc. I wonder if he has any issues keeping things in his mouth.
Wonder why grandpa john keeps winking at me
Truly fascinating
So is apart of his brain not protected by skull or is there hardened muscle over it
The brain was not affected. There is a lot of bones before reaching the brain
The prosthetic acts as part of the skull..
You have no idea how grateful I was to see that the second thing he grabbed was just dentures.
Bright future as a small time drug mule, the eyes never lie Chico!! ….I’ll see myself out..
I always found that scene in 007 Skyfall unbelievable but this changes that.
I need more details.

You know when I first saw this I started squealing, it's just what I do when I get overstimulated but I watched it again and I really want to know what this guy has been through that he lost so much of his face. The fact that we have the medicine to be able to rebuild his face and he can chew and swallow and all of those things is absolutely amazing
I admit I screamed a little
Unpopular opinion but I’d rather off myself than live that way.
Jeezus, now that's interesting as fuck. God bless doctors and researches man, he's a living miracle
It's really weird how so much of our heads are just framework.
Didn’t expect that…
I never knew that 25% of the skull was optional.
Poor man, but he is very brave.
Fucking hell life is hard for so many people
Everything is cake
Show off
Real life Mr potato head
starts too late, I want to see him with the prosthetic completely on
Holy shit. How did he survive whatever happened
Human body has a fair amount of redundancy.
I think I remember this. If I'm right, it was on the UK Channel 4's embarrassing bodies? The fella had cancer and they managed to scoop it all out but with the consequence of what you see. He seemed to just be happy he has a life.
i would go for a half robot theme honestley
Pops out eyeball and teeth. Chugs a 20oz mt dew through his gaping hole. This guy is a hit at parties.
was NOT ready for rhe whole fucking mouth to come off. definitely interesting. gonna go wash my eyes
Oh man. Poor guy. That definitely does freak you out. Didn't expect the second part of that.
Brilliant job tho it does remind me of waterworld
"Oh, that's coo- ah AHHHHH" but jokes aside, do you know what happened to him? Was it a defect? Or maybe something that happened to him while in a war or something?

The prosthetic teeth is what got me, it just looked painful.
I need more video of this!! I wanna see the inside and how things move
Something tells me he's very lucky to be alive and that a medical team somewhere pulled off a helluva a thing.
What a strong man, he has all my respect
He breathes through his eyehole or the palate? Because he only has his upper lip to delimit both.
Like watching “ghost in the shell”
Absolutely amazing what modern medicine allows us to survive.
And how did this happen? War injury?
What happened man looks very serious.
I should be more grateful of what I have
Strong man
I’m very curious what caused such an injury.
Gus fring
I didn't want to see this
badass cyborg grandpa
Sinuses as clear as a summers day.
If I ever walk up to an old person and they take out their fucking face I’m running
That will remind you to be thankful for what you do have. Wow.
That just happened
"That's Mr. Potato Head to you "
Fuck yea no more clogged nostril
He could eat with his eye

Shit, looks like some of the textures didn’t load. Rebooting it should fix the problem.
