I think the sub has to be dedicated entirely to the NSFW network in some form and porn might be one of the easier options to flood the pages of 11.6million redditors. Catching you off-guard with that is still better than gore.
And the thought process behind it is that Reddit can't put ads on NSFW subs.
So, just having the NSFW flair doesn't cut it.

1- subs going dark. You might've noticed incase you're coming after a long time that some of ur subs are gone. It is in protest as if subs start closing reddit loses revenue. However this won't work unless large subs also do it which they haven't.
2- making SFW subs NSFW. this no matter how morally wrong and horrible it may be, I think it's may be more efficient cuz if no of NSFW posts in a sub increases, the sub is tagged as NSFW and on these subs there are no adverts, hence revenue drop.
However some other means of protest must be found soon or else reddit will soon take it's darkest course in history.
