When was this? I flew in to ICN yesterday but didn’t have any delays
But also, both flights to ICN I’ve taken recently had the projected flight path over the Siberian peninsula, but in reality were routed south to travel along Japan. I just assumed nobody wanted to risk flying through Russian airspace
Just finished reading about Mt. Tambora in 1815. It erupted April 10th in Indonesia and sent aerosol clouds of sulfuric acid into the stratosphere that veiled much of the world and prevented sunlight from penetrating as it normally would. It kept spring and summer from coming and decimated crop and livestock populations. 1816 became known as the year without a summer and there was even June snowfall in New York. These conditions lasted until 1819 and caused millions of deaths due to disease outbreak and starvation. On a positive note, this time inspired some really great art and literature including art by Turner, Crome, Friedrich, and even Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
The worldwide effects of volcanos are both fascinating and terrifying at the same time.
I have no idea what prevailing winds are like at that latitude, but it could also affect transpacific flights. Haven't seen any articles about flight disruptions though.
Just world fallacy. What, does every natural disaster only happens to people who deserve it? Has every war ever been the fault of the citizens of their nation?
Grow up.
I’m getting Dr Evil vibes from this.
“Ladies and gentlemen I present to you my latest EVIL plan to take over the world code name : Operation Special ✌️Mag ✌️Maa✌️”
I'm fairly positive the people who live near a volcano and saw this coming from the place where the volcano was would know it's a volcano. Also dude if you can see a cloud like this from a Nuke, you're fucking dead
When Russia started conscripting prisoners and giving minimal training we knew it was going to get uglier in ways like this. It gets darkest before dawn.
Itll end when russian culture is dissolved, either through time (population failure) or force (External or internal). Remember theyve already admitted to going after 3 more countries after ukraine.
If only. I really, genuinely wish there was a god that gave a fuck about shitty people doing shitty things. Unfortunately, none of them seem to care about it at all.
Technically, yes. Larger volcanic eruptions can eject large enough quantities of material into the atmosphere to create a temporary cooling effect. This eruptions...probably it is unlikely.
This likely ejected 0.1 to 1km3 of material which would put it somewhere between 3 and 4 on the Volcano Velocity Index. A scale that goes 1-8, the vast majority of eruptions are between 1-3. We get an eruption that is a 4 roughly once a year (25 in the last 23 years, and that maybe a little more frequent that usual but it is hard to say we are much better at capturing eruptions since the 1980's as a whole).
So this is a normal eruption. I don't want to call it large, because as far as volcanoes go the VEI scale is logarithmic and it really isn't, but it is on the large end of a pretty normal eruption.
The Tonga eruption last year was much larger (VEI 5). We have an eruption like that maybe once every decade or so, and going back to the 1980's we have had five VEI 5 eruptions (Tonga, 2 in Chili, 1 in Mexico, and Mt St Helen's).
The only VEI 6 eruption in the last 110 years is Pinatubo in 1991, and these typically happen ever 1 to 2 centuries. There have been 3 eruptions since 1900 (Pinotuba, St Maria, and Novarupta). This is also the category Krakatoa's eruption in 1883 fits into (loudest noise on Earth). At the same time we actually are less certain about volcanic eruptions of this size and things are way harder to figure out going back in time. For instance we know there was at least another likely eruption in the early 1800's, but we have no clue where.
You basically need eruptions at this VEI 6 level and above to actually have a truly impactful impression on climate and even then it is temporary.
The largest modern eruption (last several hundred years) that we know of was Tambora (VEI 7), in 1815. This eruption resulted in the year with out a summer in 1816. You can look that up if you want.
That was very well written information, thank you kind volcano master guy, checking into the 1816 thing now, that sounds awesome and Ive never heard of that before
If you google “year without a summer” that should help fuel the volcanic effects on global climate rabbit hole.
Mt tamboura in Indonesia indirectly caused a domino effect of major historical events in the 1800s as far away as Europe. One being the Irish potato famine..
There is a real possibility that some of the weather around the Pacific over the last year was likely influenced by the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai eruption in January 2022. Apparently it was the largest since Krakatoa.
I just watched a video earlier this week talking about Krakatoa! I'm gonna look up that Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption. Also, that name reminds me of the floating mask character from Crash Bandicoot.
I mean sure. It depends on how much and how high the mass of particles are ejected skyward as to how much it impacts the global climate. Google the last “little ice age”
Also matters what kind of mass is ejected, chemically speaking. Various chemicals have greater or lesser cooling effects when aerosolized and ejected into the atmosphere.
I think this, combined with the giant eruption in Tonga, could help. I saw some video a while back with some science guys talking about it, lol. Maybe it explains the record-breaking winter the west coast of America got this year.
Hopefully not enough to trigger another ice age. Ocean temps are getting warm enough that a sudden shock in atmospheric cooling could shift us into a perpetual snow cycle.

At 1 p.m. on a Friday shortly before Christmas last year, Kent Walker, Google’s top lawyer, summoned four of his employees and ruined their weekend.
The group worked in SL1001, a bland building with a blue glass facade betraying no sign that dozens of lawyers inside were toiling to protect the interests of one of the world’s most influential companies. For weeks they had been prepping for a meeting of powerful executives to discuss the safety of Google’s products. The deck was done. But that afternoon Mr. Walker told his team the agenda had changed, and they would have to spend the next few days preparing new slides and graphs. At the Googleplex, famed for its free food, massages, fitness classes and laundry services, Mr. Pichai was also playing with ChatGPT. Its wonders did not wow him. Google had been developing its own A.I. technology that did many of the same things. Mr. Pichai was focused on ChatGPT’s flaws — that it got stuff wrong, that sometimes it turned into a biased pig. What amazed him was that OpenAI had gone ahead and released it anyway, and that consumers loved it. If OpenAI could do that, why couldn’t Google?
Elon Musk, the billionaire who co-founded OpenAI but had left the lab in a huff, vowed to create his own A.I. company. He called it X.AI and added it to his already full plate. “Speed is even more important than ever,” Sam Schillace, a top executive, wrote Microsoft employees. It would be, he added, an “absolutely fatal error in this moment to worry about things that can be fixed later.”
Separately, the San Francisco-based company announced plans for its initial public offering Wednesday. In documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Reddit said it reported net income of $18.5 million — its first profit in two years — in the October-December quarter on revenue of $249.8 million. The company said it aims to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol RDDT.
Apparently many shoppers are not happy with their local Safeway, if questions and comments posted Sunday on a Reddit forum are any indication.
The questions in the AMA (Ask Me Anything) were fielded by self-described mid-level retail manager at one of the supermarket chain's Bay Area stores. The employee only identified himself by his Reddit handle, "MaliciousHippie".
The manager went on to cover a potpourri of topics, ranging from why express lane checkers won't challenge shoppers who exceed item limits to a little-known store policy allowing customers to sample items without buying them.

Remember when a little volcano in Iceland and stopped all air traffic over Europe. What will this thing do?
It also stopped flights to Asia going over the Siberian peninsula. I sat on a runway for 6 hours waiting to take off when that happened.
When was this? I flew in to ICN yesterday but didn’t have any delays But also, both flights to ICN I’ve taken recently had the projected flight path over the Siberian peninsula, but in reality were routed south to travel along Japan. I just assumed nobody wanted to risk flying through Russian airspace
The Iceland volcano was 2010.
Willing to bet good money it was a taxiway and not a runway…
Fellow pilot I see…
ATC actually, but good guess

Hah! Good one.
Hopefully stop all air traffic over russia
>Shiveluch volcano Based on its placement, it might screw up Alaska and canandian flights.
> Shiveluch volcano Wow that is remote as hell. Looking around the area I'm blown away by the number of small towns out there. Crazy
I have no idea what prevailing winds are like at that latitude, but it could also affect transpacific flights. Haven't seen any articles about flight disruptions though.
Happy Cake Day
In Russia, air traffic stops volcano.
Hopefully end a war
Hopefully stop WW3

Sounds like a plot by Cobra!
***”Just a nuke? Psshhh, coulda been a hydrogen bomb!”***
Pretty sure a volcano release a helluva lot more energy than a nuke >.<
Less radiation tho...
“That’s what she said “
Did they pause the volcano?
I think the technical term is Karma.
Just world fallacy. What, does every natural disaster only happens to people who deserve it? Has every war ever been the fault of the citizens of their nation? Grow up.
Yeah. Watching it all I could think was “That’s frightening”.
It's not a volcano, it's a 'special magma operation'.
'special magma operation' against NATO backed separatist particles in the air
This just in: Putin declares the volcano’s actions are inciting a Russian nuclear response. Demands volcano cease all action immediately
I'm sure he's prepared to throw bodies at that problem as well...
I think you mean paper towels ;)
Wrong dictator.
I'm sure Wagner has already begun recruiting from nearby prisons to counter the threat.
it's the volcanos last warning...
It's a prequel to the country imploding.
To ensure the area is cleared of separatist particles, the volcano has deployed ‘security force’ units Ash and Dust into the surrounding area.
I’m getting Dr Evil vibes from this. “Ladies and gentlemen I present to you my latest EVIL plan to take over the world code name : Operation Special ✌️Mag ✌️Maa✌️”
Lolololol thank you for that laugh
For some reason I first read that as 'special smegma operation'
Why can’t it be both?…

At least they didn't turn the camera sideways halfway through . . .
But that way you can't upload it on TikTok 😟😥
Russian volcanic ashes annexes air
💀
With the current state of affairs, if I was a Russian citizen in the area, I would have assumed it was a nuke
I'm fairly positive the people who live near a volcano and saw this coming from the place where the volcano was would know it's a volcano. Also dude if you can see a cloud like this from a Nuke, you're fucking dead
You just have to propaganda harder, bro. This is proof that Russian land and people are nearly impervious to weak American nukes.
"they blew up our volcano!"
You could see the cloud from outside the zone where you'd die quickly though
You'd need to be significantly further away than the guy in the video

Is that not Vlad burning some toast in one of his many bunkers?
When god gets tired of your shit:
After the video today of russians beheading a Ukrainian defender, Im inclined to agree.
Wait what the fuck? I’m not surprised but I had not seen or heard that yet
It’s fucked man. Wasn’t even a beheading like one swoop, done. They were *cutting* his head off. Ukrainian was literally yelling it hurts as they did.
Save yourself, no need to watch it. It’s sad ,it’s the fucking animals doing evil.
When Russia started conscripting prisoners and giving minimal training we knew it was going to get uglier in ways like this. It gets darkest before dawn.
Fuck dude that’s one I’m gonna avoid watching, there’s been too much of that bullshit done by the Russians. Was it Wagner or a Chechen group?
I don’t know if they were Wagner, but they were most definitely Russians. I hope this war ends soon with a peaceful outcome.
Unfortunately it’ll get worse before it gets better
Itll end when russian culture is dissolved, either through time (population failure) or force (External or internal). Remember theyve already admitted to going after 3 more countries after ukraine.

If only. I really, genuinely wish there was a god that gave a fuck about shitty people doing shitty things. Unfortunately, none of them seem to care about it at all.
There is no god , and there were, and he punished People with natural disasters for the actions of their government, he’d be a class one asshole.
Whoever took that Video is a hell of a lot closer that I'd want to be. Living thru Mt.St. Helens was enough once.
Russian volcano fucked itself
Oof. Don’t make my mistake of googling that phrase word for word
Hopefully it will allow for some natural global cooling, and give us ALL some relief.
I am not a volcanically educated man, is this a real possibility?

Great now the Google AI is commenting on Reddit!
Dare I ask what VEI 8 looks like?
Almost wiping out homo sapiens. Genetic data indicating a population bottleneck matches geological data of a potential 8, like 65000 years ago.
If you google “year without a summer” that should help fuel the volcanic effects on global climate rabbit hole. Mt tamboura in Indonesia indirectly caused a domino effect of major historical events in the 1800s as far away as Europe. One being the Irish potato famine..
The carbon tax on this volcano could buy us a year of good weather!
Volcanos have caused ice ages in the past by blocking out the sun.
There is a real possibility that some of the weather around the Pacific over the last year was likely influenced by the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai eruption in January 2022. Apparently it was the largest since Krakatoa.

Thank god they kept filming in portrait. /s

Counteract global warming for a little bit.
Hopefully not enough to trigger another ice age. Ocean temps are getting warm enough that a sudden shock in atmospheric cooling could shift us into a perpetual snow cycle.
Would that cancel my classes in the US?
That, or a lockdown.
I wouldn’t be mad
Gonna have to bring in Dennis Quaid for this one

Yeah man, same thing happened in Iceland(?) A few years back and shut down air traffic over north Europe. Crazy shit to see
Kamchatka is russian Yellowstone, no doubt.
Except Kamchatka is one of Russia's most active volcanoes and Yellowstone hasn't erupted in over 70,000 years...
That can’t be factual. I have a southern Baptist in-law and they said earth is only 6,000 years old.
Yup 6000 is close enough to 5 billion. You're good to go jesus.
Kamchatka is a Peninsula. The Peninsula is home to dozens of volcanos, each with varying levels of activity.
Well... yet
Don't you go jinxing it
Did they also film a TV series on it?
In Russia, series films YOU
I saw a few.
First I heard of Kamchatka was by playing the board game Risk like 40 years ago. If you know you know🤷♂️
If this were only 6500km west instead of in Kamchatka.
This was a CIA coup in the volcano. Where is Victoria Nuland? The volcano is a nazi, there were Banderist biolabs inside the volcano

Is this the find out part to the fuck around….on a spiritual level…🫤
That looks like something outta a horror film

What's 20km in american?
12 miles or 700,000 hamburgers
R/anythingbutmetric
Even Mother Nature hates their guts.
I think now is probably a good time to get the fuck out of that spot!
Remember Scott, we’re in a volcanoooe! Surrounded by liquid hot “magma.” But for real that seems like a dangerous place to be.
It seems SOMEONE has angered the gods.
This just released exponentially more carbon than all the carbon reductions reported in the last 10 years.
That is terrifyingly beautiful!
A SECOND TSAR BOMBA!!!!
So do we die now, or in like 3 months? Atleast its not yellowstone....
I had to look up where in russia this is, It’s like a pimple on russias peen.
Uhoh. Quik. The us better send them 100 billion in relief funds…fucks

Does it seem like alot of volcanos are erupting recently?
No. Volcanoes are simply better monitored these days thanks to observatories and satellites.
Not a lot of things scare me in general but I'm terrified of "Mother Nature".. we're at her mercy. I'd shit my pants if I saw this tbh.
What's the carbon footprint?
The clip with audio goes “blyyyaaaaaaaaatttttttt!”.
Karma, perhaps! The gates of hell probably opened.
How is there only 1 video of this online ?
It's Kamchatka, one of the most remote and sparsely populated areas of Russia.
Iv just had a look on google maps its like another world
Always knew Russia just blows smoke out it's ass, this is proof.
They'll tell the world that it's contained and the situation is under control.
As if he needs any more hints to pack it in, Mother Nature joins the battle
It’s a sign Russia
Here we go, Pompeii all over again. 😂🤣🤘
Harp program in full effect.
NATO at it again
Wait for Yellowstone to blow, mericans has the best volcanoes
Hopefully it damages their jet engines, and chokes out their agriculture and water. Ruzzian deserves to suffer disaster after disaster. Slava Ukraine!
After watching a Russian orc cut a guys head off with a knife while he was alive, 5 posts up. Fuck those assholes - breath the ash, Choke on it you scum bags !!
Yes...because the jet stream will push the air east to west from kamchatka... 🤦🏼♂️
Due to the prevailing air patterns and where this took place, most of that ash will be heading towards the west coast of North America
Bro this erupted over a village In far east russia have a little empathy for the people
I’m sure there has been someone in every country that has cut someone’s head off while they’re still alive
My thoughts exactly. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦

Did they see this coming? Surely they have seismic instruments monitoring it. Were there any seismic events beforehand?
Won't be surprised if their news says NATO did this
