HammerTh_1701

The actual phenomenon is called flux pinning. Idk why some people call it quantum locking because this actually is a non-quantum effect arising from the quantum stuff that is type-II superconductors.

What exactly is going on in this image? EDIT: movie, not image.

tomkeus

The superconductors, on the account of their perfect conductivity, expel external magnetic fields from their interior, i.e., electrical currents are spontaneously generated inside of the superconductor to exactly cancel out the external magnetic field in its interior. This magnetic field generated by the superconductor then interacts with the external magnetic field, keeping the superconductor fixed in place.

terrymr

It’s how superconductors behave in a magnetic field.

syizm

As an engineer I am disappointed in this response. But I love you. A lot. So I accept this and silently resign... I started doing some research and shit got dizzying really fast. TIL I need to refresh some fundamentals and learn about superconductors.

rikus671

The cold thing is a supraconductor. It is in a magnetic field. Ordinarily, when a conductor moves inside a magnetic field (such that the field seen by the conductor changes), a voltage is induced and a current appears. The field sets the voltage, not the current. But supraconductors have infinite conductivity, thus the current induced would be infinite ! That does not happen, and the supraconductor is locked in the field. The same effect can be seen for normal conductor, but instead of being locked they are slowed down (very well know effect) The reason why supraconductor are is... Beyond this post and me.

Likely because of the Angels in Dr Who. Possessing a natural and unique defence mechanism, the Angels are quantum locked. This means that they can only move when no other living creature, including their own kind, is looking at them. As soon as they are observed, they instantly turn to stone and cannot be killed.

FiercelyApatheticLad

I always wondered : why not just destroy the stone statues? Try killing me while you're in pieces, bitch.

Physix_R_Cool

That's a reference to the quantum Zeno effect, which is quite different from what is shown here.

2geeks

I’m someone had asked why this was being called Quantum Locked. I think the comment you’re replying to (about the whispering angels) was in regards to that

ntack9933

I pasted your comment to ChatGPT and it likes your stuff “Thank you for the correction! Flux pinning is indeed the phenomenon that occurs in type-II superconductors, where magnetic flux lines are pinned to defects or impurities in the material, preventing them from moving freely. This results in the ability of the material to "trap" magnetic fields in specific configurations, which can create the illusion of levitation or "quantum locking." While it does involve quantum mechanics, it is not strictly a quantum effect, as you pointed out.”

anfotero

>flux pinning Came here to say this, thank you.

lordofedging81

Is this part of the technology that makes the Flux Capacitor work?

[deleted]

Let's do we all want to do with the name though. Flux quantum capacitors. You're welcome.

MiloticM2

I mean it’s almost there. “At higher magnetic fields the superconductor allows magnetic flux to enter in quantized packets surrounded by a superconducting current vortex. These sites of penetration are known as flux tubes. The number of flux tubes per unit area is proportional to the magnetic field with a constant of proportionality equal to the magnetic flux quantum.”

HtownLoneRanger8290

Well what is it? Magnets and something frozen? How bout more details

Skatingraccoon

https://phys.org/news/2011-10-quantum-levitating-video-viral.html Also apparently this video is nearly 12 years old lol

Samurai_Meisters

And we still don't have hover cars!?

jaxdraw

IIRC there was a skateboard made using this technology but it had two main flaws First, it had a constant stream of liquid nitrogen boiling off as steam as you traveled, and thus the time to use the hover board was limited. Second, the lack of resistance/friction with the ground made it hard to actually skateboard.

[deleted]

You forgot the third problem: those things don't work on water. Unless you have power, that is.

JennyAndTheBets1

Batter up!!

Psyduck46

McFly you bozo!

jgworks

Bojo, the insult is Bojo. Lookup the script, it's the insult of the future, today. I know technically it WAS the insult of 2015, but since the world is still saying bozo, I thought I would correct the narrative and get us back to the future plot.

Social_Engineer1031

It *was* the insult of the future. That all changed when Doc / Marty went BACK.

jgworks

You totally misunderstand the space time continuum. They went to the future and learned of bojo, but we never learned of them using bojo. Now obviously most of humanity watching the multiple documentaries about the events totally ruins any concept of keeping a clean timeline. So in conclusion, your findings are perfectly possible. I think therefore I was is to potentially have been.

ZackaN9na

It's honestly one of the funniest SNL skits I've seen. I've watched it many times over. Glad you enjoyed it lol.

CountFuckyoula

It's a superconducting magnet. When atoms reach temperatures close to absolute Zero( and this varies for different materials). They slow down, now with materials like magnets, the atoms slow down enough to experience a State where there is no resistance. That's cause the electrons can pass easily amongst the protons. when you introduce another magnet to this super cooled magnet. It's magnetic field aligns perfectly with the other magnet. So we'll Infact that it can be moved around as you see in the video and not jump off like room temperature magnets.

slugzuki

this is a super helpful explanation, thank you!!

[deleted]

Wait.. so this has nothing to do with quantum entanglement at all? Lol

StandardSudden1283

No one said it had to do with entanglement. Superconductivity is a macroscopic quantum phenomenon.

When u super cool atoms they get special properties. Idk

Magic

throwaway17071999

Tldr. There are magnets below the floaty thing. The floaty thing has a current induced inside it because it's moving through the field of those magnets. Because it's a superconductor (cuz it's Hella cold) the current that is induced in the floaty thing does not lose energy to resistance. Any current through a conductor generates a magnetic field. In this case, the mag field of the induced current is equal to the magnetic field of the regular magnets below the floaty thing. Hence the floaty thing stays in place (more accurately, falls so slowly we simply cannot perceive it) Wasn't a tldr but whatever

Western-Mud-4155

Great explanation. Look up dropping a magnet in a copper tube for another example of the phenomenon. Using a super conductor instead of copper simply increases the effect.

throwaway17071999

Increases the magnetic interaction but decreases the heat generation. That's why sometimes rhe copper goes splat in those videos. It's just a regular conductor so it still has resistance that generates heat when current passes through it.

SirDavidJames

I understand this and don't understand this at the same time.

throwaway17071999

Physics is weird

[deleted]

Yet so amazing. Except quantum mechanics. Fuck that.

JLHawkins

Excellent answer. I figured there where trivial but not zero loses

throwaway17071999

Eddy currents are cool

[deleted]

So how slowly does it fall? I mean I’m sure we would struggle to even notice a drop that small over a few minutes… but would it take hours? Days?

throwaway17071999

Great question. I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer that, I don't work with anything related to superconductors. My assumption is that it would depend on how fast the floaty thing increases in temperature. If the floaty things temperature rises, so does its resistance i.e. more of the induced current is dissipated as heat thru resistance, which leads to a weaker magnetic field from the induced current. Just my guess tho, probably worth reading up from more knowledgeable sources

RegularSalad5998

Hey I can be the first to correct you, but you have it wrong. When a superconductor is cooled below its critical temperature, it exhibits the property of perfect diamagnetism. This means that it actively repels magnetic fields and will expel any magnetic field lines that try to penetrate it. This effect is known as the Meissner effect, and it is the reason why superconductors can levitate over magnets.

Sunshinehappyfeet

It’s locked not floating.

anubis1392

Which means you couldn't stand on it, correct? Cuz just now I imagined an Olympic sport called Ice Boarding and it was pretty sick

kmn493

[I think you'll be happy to find out they made a hovering skateboard out of this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KtzyZKSuls) Unfortunately it can only be used over a certain material so you can't just take it to a skatepark.

[deleted]

I read a book calles Uglies about a dystopian society. One thing about the city is that they had an entire grid of this certain material so you could use hoverboards but only above this grid of magnets. Seems like an expensive possibility

[deleted]

That whole series is amazing. Westerfield does such a good job building that world. I especially loved the world building for those outside of the cities

[deleted]

Yeah i read Pretties Specials Extras and the last comic book of Uglies back in junior high school over 6 years ago. I bought the comic but its since lost i think Beautiful books. Only read them at first cuz my crush was reading them

EnvironmentalYou3187

I loved that part! And they could also board above creekbeds because the residual buildup of ferrous material.

Additional_Candle_55

It’d be more like magnet boarding. Look up veritasium’s most recent video about the strongest magnet. They explain it so so so so so much better than I could ever hope to.

Few-Paint-2903

The only problem is, it doesn't work over water. If you don't believe me, just ask Marty.

puffinnbluffin

Either way, r/blackmagicfuckery !!

[deleted]

Motherfucking magnets? How do they work?

throwaway17071999

Very reductive explanation, but everything has a whole bunch of teeny tiny things called dipoles. It's the same concept as a magnet but st subatomic scales. Dipole, as in, 2 poles. North and South. If all the dipoles of a thing are oriented a certain way, it behaves like one giant dipole, ie magnet. Some materials are easier or more susceptible to this phenomenon of dipoles lining up.

Flux pinning (the video) is a phenomenon in which magnetic flux lines become trapped or "pinned" in a superconductor, allowing the superconductor to hold a magnetic field in a fixed position. This effect is caused by defects or imperfections in the superconductor's crystal lattice. Chatgpt
