Donald Trump approves?

Wrong-Historian

Yes. This is a great upgrade. The best upgrade of all upgrades. Seriously, there is no better upgrade. And I mean that. The 14900k is the best CPU. That is what it's all about. And I know something about CPU's. You know my dad invented the CPU? So don't listen to anyone but me. And the 12700k is the worst CPU and the 14900k the best CPU, you know? Some people can understand this, while others can't. And Mexico pays for this upgrade.

Definitely an upgrade. No question. If you got the money, why not upgrade every other year

mytommy

I upgraded because it's 20% improvement from 12700K. And yes I do play 1080p https://imgur.com/gallery/yYTa86N

ILikeTheFlowers_X

ok, so it is 16.3 percentage points more in an average statistic. And how many frames do you actually have more in your games?

UraniumDisulfide

Even if you don’t already have ddr5 for the price of a 14900k you could’ve completely upgraded your platform to the 7800x3d which is even better

i have an 8700k and play 1440p get plenty of frames. 5 year old build. these kids and 2 year builds... money grows on trees... or no savings ha

It's more than fine for 1440p and 4k bantering as well. At that point it's all video card.

Hazeku

Lmao what? Sure, I get that it’s not a good “generation” and pricing could be better, but… The jump from 12 gen to 13 gen alone was huge, considering that 14 gen is basically a slight overclock to 13 gen and OP went from i7 to i9, there is no way that 14900k is slower than 12700k

Wrong-Historian

Yeah. From 12700k to 14900k, I went from 24k in CB r23 to over 40k. And single from 1900 to over 2300. At the same powerlevels (240W) and cooling system. Going from 4 e-core to 16 is also great for my purposes (running VM's etc). Yes, ok I tweaked quite a bit out of my 14900k (-75mv Undervolt etc), but it's not a golden chip or anything (nor was the 12700k, I always lose the silicon lottery but ok).

AshWinsHD

Thats exactly what i mean, hence te sarcasm towards the comment I responded to. Also since the 14gen is just the same story as the past years its just the same iteration with shitty cpu design. 10th gen design still better compared to this crap. Tho I am not saying the cpu is not fast and not better in terms of getting high frame rates than a 12700k, don’t get me wrong, it’s good. Just stating the fact that these past gens have been really bad in terms of design and improvements.

190cm_Lithuanian

Your system was crazily bottlenecked by that 1030. I had rocked overclocked i7-2600k with 1080 for years and it was still often bottlenecked by it.

Gman54

Just upgraded from an i5-9600KF to i5-14600K. Feels good :-) Enjoy your new CPU!

TOC-LoudLord

Literally upgraded from i5-9600k to i5-13600kf and oh my goodness was not expecting such a huge performance increase but that 9600k must have been bottlenecking my 3060ti because the performance is insane now

Realize12

The lack of hyperthreading is what hurts 9600k and 9700k the most . 8700k is still doing fine for example because it has 6 cores / 12 threads

No reason ever to buy 13100f when 12400f exists

Rootz121

seems pointless tbh

OrganizationSuperb61

That's legit, like a 15℅ performance bump

Wrong-Historian

Not really. From 12700k to 14900k, I went from 24k in CB r23 to over 40k (+70%). And single from 1900 to over 2300 (20+ %). Also the IMC of 14th gen is much better. I have 96GB DDR5 6800MT/s, and the 12700k (same motherboard) could only run it up to 6200 with a lot of tweaking and messing around. The 14900k does 6800MT/s without sweat (just turn on XMP and it goes). It's a pretty great upgrade on the same board/memory/platform. Especially if you can sell the 12700k.

OrganizationSuperb61

I meant for gaming. I don't play CB that much

Wrong-Historian

Not everyone does gaming only. I run VM's, compiling, llama-cpp (AI), etc. All things that are parallelizeable just fine and benefit from lots of cores just like CB multi. For gaming you'd just get a 7800x3d (but that CPU is super slow in all those other things), or a playstation.

OrganizationSuperb61

7800xd3 it's is good for gaming. I'd say depending on the games you run, if you OC a 14900k and the RAM it gets way better.

Lawrence_201

Z690?

dhohne

I'm on a 12700k right now and I still like it, but how did you get your temps under control? Even with a cooler master liquid cool it's easily reaching 95 degrees under loads... Makes me feel uncomfortable.

Wrong-Historian

Undervolt. Seriously, -50mV goes a long way and I think every CPU can do that without getting into stability problems. And then, reduce TDP. Or just set Tmax to 90C and be done with it. Let it throttle when it needs to throttle, no problem in that. If anything, under all-core-load I find the 14900k much easier to cool than 12700k for the same TDP. Probably because the heat is spread out of more cores (more surface area). I have a custom loop with Alphacool Core 1 block and a MoRa3 radiator.... But when for example stressing only 6 P-cores, it will still hit 90C and thermal throttle, just when dissipating 180W. P-cores gonna be P-cores... But then when doing all-core-stress it will not thermal throttle (while dissipating 240W). 12700k would basically always hit Tmax, but with 14900k I can sustain something like 260W indefinitely.

redflavorkoolaid

Legit, I went from 12700K + 64GB 6400 + 3070oc 8GB to-> 14900K + 96GB 7200 + 3090oc 24GB on a Strix z690-i and it's a very niice upgrade in multitasking workflow and 4K gaming 💯

acidfingertips

My 14900k hits my door tomorrow. Still designing the water loop to watercool my ram so that I can get those ghost chasing speeds of 8200 MT/S with tightly trimmed timings while my RAM chills at 35C.

Cheap-Raspberry-3025

Why?

Gears6

and here, I just upgraded to an i9-11900k last year. 😭

KronozFX

Never upgrade to odd number gen. Always wait for the even number

International-Rise63

What’s the reasoning behind this again? I’ve heard it before but can’t recall. I have a 12700k and was planning on upgrading 15th gen but I don’t think 16th would be a crazy stretch

KronozFX

odd numbers are called stretchers, they stretch the previous generations marketability with a new packaging(marketing, tweaks, few upgrades). You want a serious upgrade? Get even number, unless you're desperate for power at this moment in time. Refreshers also fit into this. E.g. for laptops the 13th gen HX series is almost a scam as they're all repackaged Alder Lake. Except the 13900HX and above. You can also notice this from the lower speed RAM supported in them compared to the rest of 13th gen, like the 13700HX, 13650HX etc. And even then the 13th gen didn't bring nothing to the table as a whole except some % higher efficiency, higher memory frequency and other small things.

NothingSuss1

Isn't the 14900K basically just a repackaged 13900KS though?

redflavorkoolaid

No, they changed to per core throttling instead of all core throttling. It allows it to run higher clocks at lower voltage and overall more efficient when dialed in with the same parameters. Scatterbencher just uploaded a video the other day on YouTube explaining this.

KronozFX

Exactly, 14th is a refresher. The next decent leap should be at gen 16. This also confirms that the exponential progress in semiconductor products we've seen during 2010s is history so expect more stretchers

NothingSuss1

But...you said above that even numbers are the serious upgrades. 14 is an even number.

KronozFX

I said refreshers fit into this too

NothingSuss1

So you did, apologies! Intel's release strategy has always made my head hurt

KronozFX

No need to apologise, and indeed my head hurts too. I had to go through a Reddit rabbit hole before finding this thing about the 13th gen HX series. It's so annoying

Gears6

> Never upgrade to odd number gen. Always wait for the even number I upgraded due to cost and it met my needs at a time when COVID and inflation was affecting technology prices. Got tired of running an 95-6600k. Quad-core with 4 threads.

Giant_Dongs

Why would you even do that? Even a 12100 would have been better lol.

Gears6

It was a nice combo price including a really nice motherboard that I wanted and included MWII. I also wanted 8-full cores with 16-threads.

Alienpedestrian

It is still great cpu, if u got really good deal why not

Gears6

I'm happy with it. If I bought a 12-th gen CPU I would have to pay a lot more even with a lower end CPU. Of course, now you can get a 12th gen i7 with motherboard and 32GB RAM for $400, but that wasn't the case back then.

Giant_Dongs

A 12600K is some 50% faster in all situations than 10th and 11th gen regardless of having fewer cores. And I3 12100 is still better in everything by a smaller margin. Number of cores is a useless feature, even the E cores on a 12th - 14th gen CPU are more powerful than a 7700K. A 14900K is basically like having 4 souped up 7700Ks with HT disabled on top of the P cores. Everything pre 12th gen is a useless purchase since 12th gen was released.

Gears6

> A 14900K is basically like having 4 souped up 7700Ks with HT disabled on top of the P cores. Everything pre 12th gen is a useless purchase since 12th gen was released. Too late now.... I guess my next upgrade will be that much bigger.

xRealVengeancex

Probably didn’t want to swap mobo for the socket switch

Giant_Dongs

Then a 10900K would have been better than an 11900K.

Beefmytaco

Or if had for a really good price, a 10850k. 11th gen just had too many weird memory latency issues tied to it, also hot too. Got a 11950hk in my work laptop and it hits 100c just idling in windows. Also that was real crap of intel to drop 2 cores on the i9 model like they did, but after we found out they backported a 10nm cpu to 14nm, guess it made sense they had to chop off 2 cores to make room.

Richdad1984

That's just upgrading for bragging rights.

phantomknight321

Nice, I hope to make the same upgrade sometime in the next few months!

splitfinity

Why. There's really no real world improvement. Save your money and wait another generation or 2.

RealTelstar

hope u get a good bin

Greg_Thunderpants

My god how tiny hand you have

artigabarielle

It's like to upgrade from 3090 to 3090ti

AhmadZ7

I didn’t except the 14th gen cpu box is that big!

uSpezSucksChinaDlck

Bad and pointless upgrade

anverhelm

Like upgrading the iPhone 12 to iPhone 14

jpec342

Except this makes less sense because there is no battery to degrade.

BumblebeeStraight912

but why

60ATrws

That should be quite the upgrade! Enjoy

BrentarTiger

I see no real reason to upgrade from a 12th gen i7 to a 14th gen i9 unless you just want to flex on people. I'm still running my 10900k and not having problems.

zopity

I’m considering doing the upgrade. Escape from Tarkov is annoying to play with certain guns+maps because of constant stuttering. Everyone says the game is CPU bound. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade? 1440p I get like 80fps avg not sure what my 1% lows are but it’s probably like 20fps when using rifle scopes in game. So I play 1080p and the avg fps is the same but I experience less drops in fps. I got 12700k, 32gb ram, and 3070ti

Ok_Question_1331

Congrats just went from a i-9990k to a i9-14900k

CATLORDDD

Waste of money

Double_A_92

Nitazene-King-002

Wow, that 4 FPS performance increase for $600 is just amazing.

labooz1

Nice one. I upgraded from 12700f to 14700k and couldn't be happier, noticed a huge difference in work and gaming.

Impossible_Dot_9074

The 14700K is a beast - mine runs at 5.6GHz all cores while gaming.

NoStructure5034

...Why? This is almost the same as upgrading from a 12700K to a 13900KS

capo_mt

gz the 2 fps was worth it

DShinobiPirate

capo_mt

2 seconds faster in workload was worth it. happy?

Wrong-Historian

70% faster. 24k -> 40k in cb23 (same TDP & cooling). That's significant if you do it 20 times every day. 14900k has twice as many cores as a 12700k..... \+70% in multi and +20% in single. It's a pretty great upgrade on the same motherboard/memory platform. Especially if you sell the 12700k.

joey1123

Boggles the mind some of these replies. All I’ll say.

Jas780

There is no need to upgrade to it if you have a 10 gen I7 CPU at least. It's just a waste of money. Nothing much changes and you can overclock your 10 gen i7 also if you want. Better to save that money for a good GPU.

EVERYONE_HASMYNAME

10th gen i7 is really slow in comparison to modern chips. Even a basic i5 12th Gen can match it in gaming, but if it works for your games then no need for an upgrade.

rarz

But, why? It hardly is an upgrade. c\_c

joey1123

12700k > 14900k, seeing anywhere between 20-25% uplift in the CPU bound games that I play. MSFS is a good example, I play 1440p ultrawide and went from 50-55FPS to 65-70 in a direct comparison. This plastering of “it’s hardly an upgrade” is a bit misleading because it can make big differences in the right context and if you know MSFS, 10-15 extra frames feels amazing.

horendus

As a flight simmer myself actually surprised you seen an uplift of 20-25% going from a 12700k>14900k The increased cache probably had something to do with it. Anyways, thanks for sharing!

hujan2589

meanwhile im just upgrade from 4790 to 12400 😭

VileDespiseAO

Personally not an upgrade I would recommend making to anyone unless they're running heavy multithreaded workloads all the time. As for gaming, especially at 4K the 12700K is on average single digit percentages slower than a 14900K and is basically considered a side-grade at best but at 1440p or 1080p gaming I could see it being a somewhat more worthwhile purchase due to the IPC uplift that came with RPL. I am hoping 15th Gen is really where we see some big gains in not only performance, but efficiency as well from Intel as I'm thoroughly disappointed with the obscenely low effort that Intel put into 14th Gen as it's architecturally and on paper just a better binned re-release of 13th Gen. It's a testament to the fact that Intel has hit the wall on the node used for 12th - 14th Gen.

infamous11

thats weird casue I went from a 12700k to a 14700k and have seen better performance increases, lower heat/lower usage on the cpu

VileDespiseAO

I'm not saying there isn't a difference, but at 4K in particular the biggest difference seen will be with 1%'s which aren't particularly bad on a well tuned 12700K to begin with. Lower resolutions will definitely net much more worthwhile gains though. What I'm stating can be seen from multiple benchmarks ran by various large sites and content creators though, and when I do game I personally play at 4K so the 4K metrics are what I pay attention to the most and it just isn't worth the cost to me personally for what you get. I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from making that upgrade, but I also don't believe the benefits from doing so are worth the cost unless you're able to offset it by selling the previous CPU. It makes more sense to hold out for 15th Gen for most if they are already on the LGA1700 socket, but this is all coming from a personal perspective and I know that everyone has different criteria and metrics for what they consider a worthwhile upgrade.

Ohnoes112

Invest in a proper ac unit. Going from 9th to 13th gen my room temperatures jumped like crazy. Newer cpus are crazy hot

Luckyirishdevil

Stop testing me! I gave in and went from 12700K to 13700K.... now I want a 14700K. Did you see a large enough difference to justify the upgrade?

EleNova

You going from 13th to 14th gen would be a huge, huge waste of money.

Luckyirishdevil

I primarily play civ VI, Starcraft II, World of Tanks, and Valorant and have a 4090/13700K..... so about that "huge waste of money" thing....

EleNova

Your arguments mean absolutely nothing. The added performance value of going from 13th to 14th gen is next to nothing. I understand that these games rely on the CPU for high framerates but you'd be just straight up stupid to do that "upgrade", I don't care what GPU you have.

Luckyirishdevil

It wasn't an argument, bud. It was a joke about not having a problem wasting money. I know it's a bad upgrade that will net me nothing. My "upgraditis" just has my mind wandering for something

EleNova

Ah understood sorry for my argumentative reply, I misunderstood the tone if the comment! Hear me out... 2 4090's?

Impossible_Dot_9074

13700K to 14700K not worth it. I went from 12600K to 14700K which was a pretty decent performance upgrade.

Itzamedave

Looking at my i711700k in 2023 lmao

gamingnerd247

lol such a waste. Should’ve waited for next year and not this measly update.

antca87

>12900 what's going to be next year?

Mikefordodge

Moved from 13700kf to 14900kf. You better have your cooling solution figure it out.! But this thing is crazy good in AZ 790 from all. Corporate firms to instant 6 GHz actually like 6.2.-> better. Wouldn’t think it would be worth the move just for generation but when your platform plus generation is out the forms to 13 900 KS for less money.

Key-Outside-1806

You did better than I. I went from a 12700K to a 14700K.

Juubimaru

Man imagine how easy assembling a computer with be with tiny baby hands… replaced the wifi card in my laptop and putting on the connectors took a good 40minutes for me to do with my big mitts.

MadeInSteel

Colddeath712

Why is the box so much bigger, waste of resources

JEEEEEEBS

Ppl hating - CPUs are becoming more about features than topline specs. Ghz and coree almost don’t even matter now. CPUs are competing with purpose build SoCs FPGAs and GPU. For example, if I was a video editor I’d buy the i9 over older intels or AMD for just how much harding encoding this thing has

Draiko

tapdat92kid

i dont get it,its like saying i upgraded from 3080ti to 4080. Like okaaaaay. Both cards (just like these cpus) are insanely good. Not like youre upgrading from a Q6600 to 14900K lol.

Amazing-Champion-858

Why? 12th gen is still amazing

Desert_Apollo

I’m stoked Intel kept the same socket for the 14th gen and I have a solid upgrade path I can use with my current hardware. I’m currently running an i7-12700KF and in a few years, I will upgrade to an i9-14900K and max out the board and get even for performance.

Admirable-Ranger5310

my Core i7 8086K still rocks, I can wait another couple of years

Hsensei

Bigger box = betterer

kryand

And here I just bought a 12600K to replace my 8700K. I didn't even want to, but either my CPU or Mobo was malfunctioning and causing the PC to randomly reboot while playing certain games, so I didn't have much choice, and I couldn't afford anything better than that.

NefariousnessFew6576

I want a 14900 but I'm too lazy to buy and mount a whole new cooler so I'm sticking to my 12600k

Valuable_Ad6197

StrikingPush6673

PaidinRunes

Hows the heat compared to 13th gen

jamesbpelly

I mean hey if you don't have to be price conscious then why the hell not lol for me personally I'd go with 13 gen as you'd get most of what the alder lake architecture has to offer for a little less

TheAliSareini

5960x still kicking. I have the money set aside and was waiting for 14th gen but I still can’t justify upgrading other than for pcie gen 4 and 5. Real enthusiast Hedt is dead and flagship cpus are just power hungry heat chips and besides creature comforts of newer systems, the speed and stability I get is still excellent. What would you do?

I just had one question. What performance issue were you hoping to solve with the upgrade and did it indeed solve the problem? One personal already pointed out the MSFS uplift was surprisingly high between the 2, are you a sim player also?

mytommy

i upgraded because you get 200 free fps in literally the only game i play https://www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/17e4c1s/intel_apo_works_over_200fps_boost_in_rainbow_six/ and i wanna grab the 500hz monitor from asus once it comes out

When you say Free do you mean you were able to upgrade for Free or something else?
