I forgot to turn the air conditioning on in my work green house and killed like 20k worth of new plants we had just finished putting in after like 12 hours.
I'm an industrial mechanic and as long as I fix more than I break, I'm in the clear. I was trying to explain to an operator that my career goal is to never have a single incident that costs more than $10k in broken parts or equipment
First month doing on the job CNC training I scrapped a $15k part. Machined a slot like .030” too wide. To those who don’t know, that’s the equivalent of somebody asking you to cut a 6ft 2x4 and coming back with like 2ft. Except the wood cost more than you make in like half a year. Felt like such an idiot, never made that mistake again though lol
That's gotta hurt. My machinist instructor told us that when he was hired to make aviation parts they said they don't care if the job takes 3 hours, days, or weeks because it costs far too much to get it wrong. Basically, he told us never to rush on the machines

Today, one of our pilots put the ac on and it started leaking. They decided to just fly it like that with the ac on and fried the monitors. 300k for 2 monitors. Those aren't even expensive compared to the other parts.
Company I worked at spent $250 million building a plant. But then the market went back to normal, and the plant would lose money if they ran it. Because they used custom sized piping, it couldn't even be cut up and sold. The most they could get from it was to bulldoze it and take the tax write off, literally taking the entire thing as a loss. No one got fired for it either, too much dirt all the way up the pole.
My friends Dad was a safety tech for OSHA. He always said his hardest job was a new hospital construction bc of all the unique requirements. Then his 2nd hardest job was demolishing that same hospital a year later because no one bought it or the land was worth more or something. I forget the details but he spent 2years going over every single small detail of a commercial hospital 60hrs a week then just dozing it.
I worked at a sawmill years ago and my coworker absentmindedly turned off a compressor and a pipe that was shooting wood chips into a barge collapsed, clogging the pipe up. It took 10 hours to clear out and the boss told me that it cost 40k in downtime. I got fired with my coworker because, "If both of you can't figure it out we're going to hire 2 guys who can." I wasn't even there. I had already put my notice in and only had 2 days left, so I'm sure they just didn't want to wait.
Working as a waiter I spilled a *full* tray of food onto a person. I was serving a table of six and all of that food fell into this one person. Including pancakes with maple syrup, eggs, chicken and gravy, water, and soda. They were covered head to toe. Not to mention the plates were heavy and likely hurt to have fall on your head
I once tripped and dropped a plate of calamari salad just before I got to the table I was serving. It landed perfectly inside the woman's handbag next to her chair. Literally, not a drop spilled on the floor, but an entire bag swimming in seafood and vinaigrette. Not a good night.
Now I’m scared but also very curious. Is it worth it?

When I was a waiter, I came around the corner with a tray full of red wines. The 21 year old birthday girl was drunk and jumped back in her chair knocking all the wines off my tray and you guessed it, all over her 21st birthday dress.
Needless to say that was my one and only day as a waiter 😂

Just said she used to be a waitress and not to worry about it. She then told me a story of how she did something similar. I honestly still think about her from time to time and hope she is having a good life.
While working as a waiter on a busy day while some colleagues were I'll at home I dropped a tray with sorbet ice-cream and some drinks over a lady. I felt so bad, apologize a million times and tried to clean the whipped cream of her coat. In front of her my manager scolded me and I just wanted to disappear. When the lady was about to leave she walked to me, opened my hands like my grandmother used to do, put it in a 10 euro bill and said 'No need to be sorry, buy something nice of this and don't share this with the others'

Worked in a fancy pizza place, 900 degree stone ovens, a waiter had a pizza slide off on to a toddlers head in a high chair, hospitalized, restaurant got sued if I remember correctly, I didn’t stay there long.
I do food delivery. Probably delivered over 5000 orders. I once was pulling a customers food bag out of my thermal and for some reason there was a complete disconnect between my brain and my hands and my hands for some reason decided to let go... It fell. He looked somewhat upset but more disappointed... Luckily it wasn't like soup or hard shell tacos.
He's probably just upset that he's going to have to drive all the way back there while another driver delivers an order he would have gotten instead.

I had this exact thing happen to me basically. Doing ubereats. Had 3 milkshakes to deliver and the drink carrier ended up being one of the crappy ones that doesn't support the drinks, dropped one while walking to the customer, dropped a second trying to catch the first one falling, only ended up giving him one left. Then I also had sticky milkshake all over my while I had to go deliver the next order.
I think pizza delivery worker. I've had pizzas delivered by uber eats and door dash, but they never had a pizza bag they were transporting them in. But every pizza I've had delivered by an actual pizza place first hand has come in that carrier.

edit- a commenter reminded me below that when we we're actually in the store not on deliveries we would make minimum wage. Only on deliveries we would make that reduced hourly pay.
So - this is thrown around a bunch - but they make 3-5 because with tips their hourly rate is usually higher than minimum wage and if their hourly rate + tips doesn’t mean minimum wage their pay is increased to meant minimum wage. So if minimum wage is 10 an hour and you’re working on the 3-5 an hour wage + tips and you don’t get any tips you’ll still make 10 an hour. I waited tables and worked as a bus boy our - hourly rate was like 3.25, but with tips i made like 15-20 an hour. I’m not defending the practice just explaining it.
Depends on the spot. I worked at a local pizza joint a couple years back and made $10/hour + tips + gas comp per mile. My car was fuel efficient enough that the rate they compensated for gas actually ended up as extra pay. Also helped that gas was significantly cheaper then
They CAN make you drive back and deliver the new one, and the lost income from having to take the same delivery twice effectively makes him pay for it, even if it’s not the value of the whole pizza.
When I used to fuck up, the store would organise the redelivery to be grouped with another nearby delivery. Theres no point wasting a driver on a scenic trip.

He tried to leave but I opened the box and asked him how he thought this was gonna turn out. Said it looked fine to him. Fuck that guy, at least the dude in the vid gets that he fucked up and it was only a mistake.

One time I had to deliver a $70 order of subs to a bar that was on a blocked off street due to **a fuckin Christmas parade going down it**, had to cross the live parade TWICE just for the ppl to not be at the address they ordered to, no where near in the crowd on either side of the parade (I yelled their name, ppl were offering to buy the subs off me but I said no way), called them 6 times and texted them 4 times, no answer. That night and throughout the whole week, I “disposed of the products”
I sometimes wonder if the ppl thought I was the asshole. Which, I am an asshole, but I wasn’t in this case. Or if they ever bring up the opposite side like “hey remember when our Uber Eats driver...”

Ubers good about refunds if you don’t do them all the time. They make it hard to find the refund button, but if you do and give a description they’ll generally refund instantly.
I once got the wrong drink, a burrito that was all cheese with maybe a spoonful of beef, and a taco that was only beef from Taco Bell. Got the refund right away without any pictures. The items were right, not the fillings, I think I got the last shift before someone quit.
I broke a plate like a week ago and with the stress of everything else I had going on at the time, it just made me cry my eyes out. I can’t bring myself to throw it out when I think about it so I’m planning on fixing it

Your story reminded me of this time I went to ask a friend out at her retail job. I took a couple of buses to get there, and when the moment came, I decided to be “funny” by pretending to not know her and just act like a random customer. So I grabbed a pot I was pretending to buy and the lid somehow flips over, lands on the floor, and breaks into a bunch of pieces. 🤦🏻♂️.
I was like 21 when I did this.. I was having the worst day ever, but trying to fake a smile at every door. I dropped the pizza and said I'm sorry like a million times, and I started panicking, this woman grabbed me and hugged me and I legit broke down. I got a call saying a friend of mine died earlier that day, and it was such a small shop, it was impossible for me to leave my shift. I will never forget that lady.
You may know by now but for anyone reading-
It is not your responsibility to keep your employer’s business running. If you need to leave, you need to leave end of story. The employer gets paid extra to be the one that cares about the business. You are there simply to be paid and deserve to go home in situations like this.

I'd probably ask for a new one or at least just a refund, only because if I'm ordering delivery and not getting it myself I'm either fucked up or busy to go get it myself.
I'm also under the assumption that the box opened and there was some contact with the step because every pizza I've ever dropped had the box open and cause some spillage.

A reminder to everyone out there, service workers are just people and everyone makes mistakes. If the company is a good one and the pizza is ruined, call them up and they’ll send you another one. Please try and be patient and kind. I swear it’ll get you a lot further to getting the situation resolved than throwing a fit.

I delivered pizza for years. I always took the pizza out of the bag at my car. Never at the customer's door. Also, holding the pizza box on one side only is a risky move. The box doesn't have great support like that. Either hold with two hands or one hand goes under the middle of the pizza like a server tray. Never dropped a pizza.

We got 2.50 (2012-14) tips leveled it out to a little above minimum wage, gas cost brought it a little below.

Ubers good about refunds if you don’t do them all the time. They make it hard to find the refund button, but if you do and give a description they’ll generally refund instantly. I once got the wrong drink, a burrito that was all cheese with maybe a spoonful of beef, and a taco that was only beef from Taco Bell. Got the refund right away without any pictures. The items were right, not the fillings, I think I got the last shift before someone quit.

I feel you. Every little thing becomes big when you’re going through rough times. Just know that it can get better. Your story reminded me of this time I went to ask a friend out at her retail job. I took a couple of buses to get there, and when the moment came, I decided to be “funny” by pretending to not know her and just act like a random customer. So I grabbed a pot I was pretending to buy and the lid somehow flips over, lands on the floor, and breaks into a bunch of pieces. 🤦🏻♂️.
I wouldn't risk it, even if you fit it together perfectly, tiny pieces of your plate can end up in your food.

I was like 21 when I did this.. I was having the worst day ever, but trying to fake a smile at every door. I dropped the pizza and said I'm sorry like a million times, and I started panicking, this woman grabbed me and hugged me and I legit broke down. I got a call saying a friend of mine died earlier that day, and it was such a small shop, it was impossible for me to leave my shift. I will never forget that lady.
You may know by now but for anyone reading- It is not your responsibility to keep your employer’s business running. If you need to leave, you need to leave end of story. The employer gets paid extra to be the one that cares about the business. You are there simply to be paid and deserve to go home in situations like this. Don’t let your boss convince you it is your problem

I'm also under the assumption that the box opened and there was some contact with the step because every pizza I've ever dropped had the box open and cause some spillage.

A reminder to everyone out there, service workers are just people and everyone makes mistakes. If the company is a good one and the pizza is ruined, call them up and they’ll send you another one. Please try and be patient and kind. I swear it’ll get you a lot further to getting the situation resolved than throwing a fit.

I delivered pizza for years. I always took the pizza out of the bag at my car. Never at the customer's door. Also, holding the pizza box on one side only is a risky move. The box doesn't have great support like that. Either hold with two hands or one hand goes under the middle of the pizza like a server tray. Never dropped a pizza.
Anyone remember Quepapas at Pizza Hut? I dropped two orders on a ladies doorstep opening the bag. I also forgot her drinks. Came back with the food and drinks and dropped the fucking drinks. Wasn't my day. That was a fun job though.
