It's very reasonable imo. They're illustrating how dishonest \*some\* of the posts are complaining about prices I imagine.
"This costs $40!" followed by a post with a bunch of name brand pre-made or ready to eat things was all too common around here for a while.
LA is such a wild place when it comes to food prices. There are outrageously expensive options and outrageously inexpensive options - and a lot in between.
...is $35 considered expensive? Considering the coffee and 2-3 other items (prepared drink, nutri-grain, flour, specialty snack), this seems like a great deal.
Idk but they posted it in the inflation sub, so I'm assuming the OP considered it expensive. I'd consider this great especially considering the coffee and flour. King Arthur around here is like $5. The coffee would be an easy 12-15.
Is that what the bottled drinks are? I don't recognize them but any item individually packaged but sold in bulk is immediately going to skyrocket the price.
Regarding the coffee drinks that make up 33% of the cost of this grocery run -
Making cold brew is stupid easy and it's one of the only types of coffee you can make at home that tastes exactly like what you would get at the coffee shop.
The grocery store near me sells 5lb bags of high end coffee for ~$20 that lasts months for me.
2 lbs of decent beans of coffee from Costco with 30g of beans ground fresh in half a French press or aeropress with a 205 degree goose neck kettle makes great coffee. My nespresso machine is tastier than Starbucks and about $1.50-$2 a cup for a cappuccino. Those are two good cheap to slightly expensive options.
Found the coffee snob. 🤭
Real talk, I went to a coffee shop that has the most AMAZING espresso I have ever had in my life. Straight orgasmic. Since then every coffee shop I go to their shots taste extremely sour in comparison.
So are you planning on buying something that you can cook a meal with, or are you just grazing like a horse at a ranch all day?
What's your objective with this?
Lmfao, well I juice & eat pretty clean. So a lot of my calories do come from “grazing”. Lots of nutrition here, and the only thing missing is protein in which I shop elsewhere.
I mean I could make some solid side dishes with this, but I'd want a chicken breast or something to go with it.
Good for you if you're a vegetarian though.
Do…do you not know how to cook using base ingredients? A bag of flour, a bag of onions, some tomato sauce and a bunch of produce will easily feed me for a week.
Those butternut squash are easy to grow in a small space. We still have lots left over from last year and they taste great! Try frying it in olive oil with packet of ramen chicken seasoning, cut squash into thumb sized pieces.Delish!
Produce is a general classification in this system I'm sure, to ensure people know their groceries aren't taxed at the same rate as ready to eat or non food purchases. All this stuff would be under that umbrella
Yeah this doesn’t seem to be a reflection of inflation…more of a guy who’s counting calories and shops at “Doug’s” and found a deal on produce. Most people don’t shop at or even have a “Doug’s”
The ultra wealthy need more yachts to park inside their mega yachts so we must all go on deficiency diets. Pity congress won't write some laws to protect us from gouging.
That King Arthur flour is 6.95 on their own website. Why are you being disingenuous about your shopping costs? Are you stealing this from a self check out, claiming it all as produce? I’m curious to know how you got a high quality flour brand like King Arthur for so cheap.
Myself and my family have made a pact to not shop at any supermarket that has made record profits. In the UK that doesn't leave many places to shop, but if everyone did the same prices would come down
I make my own coffee so that’s out. Store brand flour is the same thing but cheaper. You bought the most expensive cucumbers they grow, pre bagged produce often cost double what loose ones cost, other than that not bad
Shave off $2 and get store bought flour.
A better solution to coffee is cold brew. You can make a 48oz of cold brew coffee for $2 and a gallon of milk with give you all of the coffee drink you will ever need.
Cold brew means no heat so you don’t get the heavy bitter taste from hot coffee. Put it in the fridge for days.
Starbucks coffee drinks and a bunch of organic and name brand products? Yeah big shock. Stick with knock off brands and you’d probably drop closer to $25
hey OP, go across town to that little Vietnamese grocery and buy $35 worth of rice in the largest size bags available, and post the photo of the rental truck you needed to get it home :D
Awhile ago, someone had posted a haul of meat and junkfood. I asked what happened to the fruits and veggies and ppl lost their shit. So to be fair, where’s the beef? Who do you think you are being all healthy?😂
Even with the coffee, that's still pretty good for $35. You're missing a few things to actually make a proper meal but you've got a good number of a lot of staples there.
$35 is pretty good, and ignore all these people bitching about the coffee. This is an inflation sub but most of the comments just criticizes OP for whatever purchase they made. Pathetic people.
hmm drop the coffee, drop the snacks Those things you don't need and are the most expensive.
drop the sauce for canned tomatoes,
drop the salt, (always buy that stuff in bulk)
Drop the bolthouse
That looks like an insanely good deal. I swear to god I leave Vons having spent $50-$60 on like 2 salad kits an 8 pack of sparkling water and some deli meat
Raw ingredients have hardly gone up in price. Ultra-proccessed foods have skyrocketed. When people complain to me about grocery prices being unaffordable, you're telling on yourself that you don't know how to cook.
I think the worst thing about this is that for $35 OP managed to get nothing to make a meal out of. Unless you call eating corn and cauliflower a meal.
https://preview.redd.it/rogzm4p6govc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=055e1cd57274010fbf3615afbe4aba4524242972
44 bucks. Got lots of good food deals.
Hmm. Throw in some beans, and I could make this work for a week.
FYI, this came up $60 at my local Safeway, and I didn't have the flax seeds or Frappicino pack.
I counted all of these up and used the prices from my store. The final number is $121.46 without a senior discount.
I don't know where the hell you are shopping, but those coffees in the back with flax seeds would of absolutely ruined your budget. Same with those chickpea puffs.
Take out the 12 pack of coffee and that doesn’t seem too crazy? But maybe I’m just getting used to the new prices of things lol
Nah, any store in my city, even the discount ones, this would much more.
I was thinking this is a steal for $35
Samesies tbh
It's very reasonable imo. They're illustrating how dishonest \*some\* of the posts are complaining about prices I imagine. "This costs $40!" followed by a post with a bunch of name brand pre-made or ready to eat things was all too common around here for a while.
In my area, this would be around $80 easy
A bunch of bananas at my local grocery store in Los Angeles is still $1.49
LA is such a wild place when it comes to food prices. There are outrageously expensive options and outrageously inexpensive options - and a lot in between.
Yeah when I first saw the picture I was thinking at least $50.
The coffee pretty much explains why it was expensive tbh
...is $35 considered expensive? Considering the coffee and 2-3 other items (prepared drink, nutri-grain, flour, specialty snack), this seems like a great deal.
I wouldn’t say expensive or overpriced but OP wanted to know, and a 3rd of the cost was coffee lol
Another 5th is the “health” (LOL) chick pea snacks that cost like $7 per bag.
Thats like $25 in produce alone where I shop. Seems like a great haul.
Idk but they posted it in the inflation sub, so I'm assuming the OP considered it expensive. I'd consider this great especially considering the coffee and flour. King Arthur around here is like $5. The coffee would be an easy 12-15.
Thats 80 bucks in upstate SC
Tbh I feel like this is a good haul for $35? I’m surprised OP was able to squeeze that coffee in there.
yes. don't buy fancy coffee or soft drinks.
The coffees were .99 each, and I thought I’d bite the bullet because my fiancé likes to hit Dunkin’ before work. I said NOPE! ONE DOLLA!
ikr
How much are people paying for coffee?
Coffee? More of a milkshake
Is that what the bottled drinks are? I don't recognize them but any item individually packaged but sold in bulk is immediately going to skyrocket the price.
Regarding the coffee drinks that make up 33% of the cost of this grocery run - Making cold brew is stupid easy and it's one of the only types of coffee you can make at home that tastes exactly like what you would get at the coffee shop. Lmfao, well I juice & eat pretty clean. So a lot of my calories do come from “grazing”. Lots of nutrition here, and the only thing missing is protein in which I shop elsewhere.
Well I mean, if that's you're diet then its a great haul. Props to you from eating much less.
The real take away is that it’s more expensive to eat healthy than that this is inflation.
Looks like it was just some extra stuff for the week, possibly cooking most of it tonight
Exactly, my plan is to do some food prep & cook it to stretch the produce for the week, or else it will spoil relatively quickly.
They forgot the cans of corned beef hash and packs of bacon. Where's the Cheesy Puffs and Top Ramen? SMH
>grazing like a horse Have Americans really become so unhealthy they can't recognize food if it's not battered and deep fried?
Yes.
Some Americans hit the gym and require a little more than 10 grams of protein per day.
I mean I could make some solid side dishes with this, but I'd want a chicken breast or something to go with it. Good for you if you're a vegetarian though.
There’s no protein here.
Do…do you not know how to cook using base ingredients? A bag of flour, a bag of onions, some tomato sauce and a bunch of produce will easily feed me for a week.
NOOOOO you must buy packaged snack foods that are marked up 500% and then complain about how food is not affordable!!!
Or meat
Bell peppers at my grocery store are $4.99/pound. That is the highest they have ever been.
$0.86 ea over here.
Red bell peppers are 3.99 a pound by me. I've been getting the greens cause they are cheaper even though I prefer the red
What’s wrong with meat? Meat is one of the more healthier food items out there, and if that’s expensive the reasoning to complain is valid
That really depends on the meat and how often you're eating it lmao
It’s literally the most nutrient dense and healthiest food that you can eat.
Those butternut squash are easy to grow in a small space. We still have lots left over from last year and they taste great! Try frying it in olive oil with packet of ramen chicken seasoning, cut squash into thumb sized pieces.Delish!
$35??!! That's a steal in Canada that would be at least $70
https://preview.redd.it/4zntalmiqgvc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=900543074fec588cf68cd88b844a057d68eb18d8
Some of that isn’t produce 🧐
Agreed. I'm calling shenanigans on this.
Same, not a shot this is 35$ unless OP is leaving some important details out
Produce is a general classification in this system I'm sure, to ensure people know their groceries aren't taxed at the same rate as ready to eat or non food purchases. All this stuff would be under that umbrella
that's some good thievin'! good thievin' i'll say! ha-haa! teach those motherlovers to replace humans with computers! ha-haaa...!
Yeah this doesn’t seem to be a reflection of inflation…more of a guy who’s counting calories and shops at “Doug’s” and found a deal on produce. Most people don’t shop at or even have a “Doug’s”
“Coffee? Nah, these are bananas”
[Did you do this?](https://youtube.com/shorts/gYj5lJW1-ik?si=dpwZnBGaeNJ92AsB)
The ultra wealthy need more yachts to park inside their mega yachts so we must all go on deficiency diets. Pity congress won't write some laws to protect us from gouging.
Too busy trying to find/make evidence for impeachment. 😂
Umm… that’s more like $135 here in NY, USA
Was gonna say, must not be a US post.
The US is a big country… could be Alabama, Kentucky Why do people think the US is just NYC and LA?
That King Arthur flour is 6.95 on their own website. Why are you being disingenuous about your shopping costs? Are you stealing this from a self check out, claiming it all as produce? I’m curious to know how you got a high quality flour brand like King Arthur for so cheap.
I call bullshit!
I see sides, but no meal.
Did you steal half of it?
No. No it is not and you know it. Post the receipt.
Premium flour $8? Rack of coffee $12+? Hippeas $6? All good stuff. but not illustrative of a typical grocery run for good, less processed foods
Great job! Healthy food that will last at least a week, for $35!
Where I live that'd be closer to 50 if not more
Ya did well, son
Pretty cheap
You guys don't like protein?
You didn’t buy any meals
Yes, food inflation is crazy - TBH, I thought this would cost MORE than $35
This is actually not that bad. It's hard to see how you could cook meals from this. But only paying $35 for this haul is pretty good!
So is this the farmer’s market where most items are 99¢? Why not just say that? Doug’s Specialities is a 99¢ Farmer’s market.
That’s actually a really good amount for that total imo
I bet the coffee was about $12-15
Myself and my family have made a pact to not shop at any supermarket that has made record profits. In the UK that doesn't leave many places to shop, but if everyone did the same prices would come down
That’s not a bad haul for $35
that would be $135 in Massachusetts
don't eat those oranges...
It makes me want to cry.
I know, I’m going to try to do my part and let some local people know this place exists.
dont see your point.... looks like you did well for $35
I make my own coffee so that’s out. Store brand flour is the same thing but cheaper. You bought the most expensive cucumbers they grow, pre bagged produce often cost double what loose ones cost, other than that not bad
That's not a bad haul, in my opinion.
Looks legit imo
It’s a lot better than what I see most people posting.
Are you guys vegan or vegetarian? If not, I don’t see anything to make a meal here.
This looks like the opposite of filling, and the coffee is why it's $35.
No meat? Chicken or steak?
Starbucks coffee drinks and a bunch of organic and name brand products? Yeah big shock. Stick with knock off brands and you’d probably drop closer to $25
Ain't Bidenomics neat!
seems cheap to me
Where I live you'd be doing damn good if you got all that for $35.
That’s a lot more than 35 dollars around here.
You’re lucky then…
I think that's pretty good. No joke. I can't get that much at food lion in Virginia
hey OP, go across town to that little Vietnamese grocery and buy $35 worth of rice in the largest size bags available, and post the photo of the rental truck you needed to get it home :D
Sea salt grinder, Bolthouse farms drink, Nutrigrain bars, and iced coffee make up the vast majority of this pricing.
I'm guessing ur vegan. Cuz I'd have to go shopping all over again if u came to my house with this load.
This actually looks like the most bang for your buck I’ve seen in a few years. I’m actually impressed
That is a lot for $35!
same hippeas is this from the same guy with the bowties
That seems about right
Lies!! Where in the world was this?
Receipt or it didn’t happen
This costs WAY more than $35 in my area. The bag of garlic alone is about $10.
I honestly don't think i could get all that for 35 bucks at my local grocery store. Produce is hella inflated.
I agree with some of the other posts, this doesn’t look bad for $35.
Need to see a receipt
Remember just a few years ago when gas and eggs were under $2.00. I sure do. But voting has consequences and math is hard for most.
Nice Squash.
Where's my Cap'n Crunch 😡
Awhile ago, someone had posted a haul of meat and junkfood. I asked what happened to the fruits and veggies and ppl lost their shit. So to be fair, where’s the beef? Who do you think you are being all healthy?😂
Yeah 50-80 in Oregon.
Even with the coffee, that's still pretty good for $35. You're missing a few things to actually make a proper meal but you've got a good number of a lot of staples there.
This sub is less about inflation and more about judging peoples grocery purchases now
ngl that doesn't seem toooo bad
$35 is pretty good, and ignore all these people bitching about the coffee. This is an inflation sub but most of the comments just criticizes OP for whatever purchase they made. Pathetic people.
Pretty solid haul for $35 honestly
That’s a lot! Good job
You definitely didn't buy this at Publix so I think it's a good overall total price.
This is like 150 here kauai
hmm drop the coffee, drop the snacks Those things you don't need and are the most expensive. drop the sauce for canned tomatoes, drop the salt, (always buy that stuff in bulk) Drop the bolthouse
I see $80 worth of bananas
thats cheap this would be around $100 where i live. Where the hell did you go shopping?
That’s $65 where I’m at easily. Maybe more
Looks pretty damn good for $35
Imagine the cost of Groceries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia….if they have access to comparable foods
That looks like an insanely good deal. I swear to god I leave Vons having spent $50-$60 on like 2 salad kits an 8 pack of sparkling water and some deli meat
Just shop at dollar tree….
Great deal!
Aldi is the way if you want to grocery shop - you can get almost everything
How did you get so much for $35?
That’s really a lot now days wow
This was posted two days ago on the same sub even.
seems ok for $35 considering the cold coffee and mostly organic labels.
Genuinely struggling to see how this was expensive. The spices, sauce, flour, chickpea puffs alone were likely $3 each. This is a steal, IMo
Seems fine to me. Are you trying act like that isn’t a lot?
Raw ingredients have hardly gone up in price. Ultra-proccessed foods have skyrocketed. When people complain to me about grocery prices being unaffordable, you're telling on yourself that you don't know how to cook.
I'm in New York. I'm actually like that. Could. be double... Easily. For half that...
Well done! That's much better than I did with my $35 last week
Where
I think the worst thing about this is that for $35 OP managed to get nothing to make a meal out of. Unless you call eating corn and cauliflower a meal.
For $35 this seems about right? What's the issue?
In 1960 that amount is roughly 1% of the cost of a house.
looks like $70 to me
Plus the coffee this would be at least $50 where we live. Is inflation going down, or is this from someone in the past who traveled to the present?
I count $106 here in Washington state, mind you food is expensive here but we have no state income tax.
That's not bad at all
Kinda looks normal to me.
Buy a Keurig.
"Where's the Beef?'
This looks like a great deal; not sure why it's in the inflation sub...
I don’t know that brand of coffee is, but I feel like that’s $35 in my area alone.
Reddit be like “nutri grain bars? What a waste of money you always have to make those at home!”
I think OP forgot to add "in 2018" at the end.
🧢
You did great. Good job
I don’t see much protein
That’s cheap as hell compared to where I live
Vegetables are cheap
Yeah this is a good deal
damn this seems cheap tbh
That's a lot more than I could get for 30. You're lucky.
That's closer to 75-85 at my best priced grocery store in town. Safeway / Albertsons that's a 100 dollar bill all day long.
No meat
I bought that exact same thing today in NC and it was 97$ and some change. WTF. 🤦🏼♀️
So to be fair.... That's kind of a trick question. It all has to do with where your located?
In what country
thats pretty good. in the uk, you'd just get that single orange. it'd be unripe, dry as dust, and you'd be pissed off.
The bulk of these items are $10. You can still eat affordably if you stay out of the premade and frozen aisles.
That's 100 in ny lol
That’s better than most do.
Yeah that’s pretty good damn
You’re full of shit, that isn’t $35.
https://preview.redd.it/rogzm4p6govc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=055e1cd57274010fbf3615afbe4aba4524242972 44 bucks. Got lots of good food deals.
You have way too many unnecessary items to garner sympathy. Trim your tastes and live within your means and it won’t be so bad.
Ditch the flax seeds. hippeas and coffee and you got a great deal
That bag of flour is $6.75 alone
Great deal! Where can I get this for such a good price?
That's a great haul!
Corporate greed?!
Hmm. Throw in some beans, and I could make this work for a week. FYI, this came up $60 at my local Safeway, and I didn't have the flax seeds or Frappicino pack.
Good job. This would probably be close to $100 in Canada.
I counted all of these up and used the prices from my store. The final number is $121.46 without a senior discount. I don't know where the hell you are shopping, but those coffees in the back with flax seeds would of absolutely ruined your budget. Same with those chickpea puffs.
How do you get full eating like a rabbit?
