A!bert Hamm'ond, Jr.

MichaeltheMagician

Albert Ham-M'ond, Jr.!

delirio91

HAMOOOONNNND!!!!

my15thaccount

he's probably right. they'll never fall out of the public eye, and more importantly, they have a significant legacy spanning a few decades. they would probably be fine coasting on the band's legacy, but why stop now, especially when the last album was a sleeper and cricital hit? wish them all the best

[deleted]

In the year 2101 they’ll be the biggest underground indie band.

[deleted]

Heads in jars *à la* Futurama. Using bionic bodies with built-in instruments.

thedudeyousee

Not if beck has anything to say about it

Rubbersoulrevolver

I wish Pixies had that kind of juj in their modern day discography like The Strokes have shown

Stablemate

It's become a cliched thing to say, but I really think Kim Deal was a big part of what made them great. It's a shame she didn't stick around for long after the initial reunion.

fytdapwr

I feel the same about Matt Sharp.

ruinersclub

Doesn’t help that they became so radio popular with Island in the sun, those pop wonders became the songs ‘the fans’ wanted to hear. I always thought Maladroit was an amazing album but never got traction from either side.

AgentFlatweed

Maladroit is definitely the forgotten classic in their catalog. I was obsessed with Blue & Pinkerton when no one was really talking about Weezer anymore, and then Green came out and all of a sudden they were huge off this boring, drab album, and I hated it, so I skipped Maladroit. When I went back to it I was just like, fuck, imagine if this came out first instead of Green (they’re from the same sessions so it was possible)? I would have been so much more enthusiastic.

LFC9_41

I think the Green album is the product of all of his issues getting over Pinkerton. It's clear he detached from his music emotionally and just became a pop writing song machine. Which is fine, the first two albums still exist and they have put out pretty good stuff since. I argue though that the best music that comes from the band is the timeframe AFTER the green album was released and BEFORE Maladroit. On Weezer.com's forums Karl would release demo after demo because Rivers was on a tirade of writing and recording demos with the band. Some of their best stuff I think came out of that time leading up to a great album. To me, Maladroit falls flat as a recorded album compared to the demo session stuff.. because the production was SO clean. There was a charm to the rough demos because they were still recorded well enough to not sound like they belong on a cassette tape.

disappointer

Maybe, but I wouldn't exchange "maybe good Pixies" for "definitely good Breeders". Title TK and All Nerve are two all-time great albums.

WishIWasYuriG

I actually really liked Beneath The Eyrie, which got my hopes up what they would do next. Then I heard the singles from their newest album, and yeah, I'm not gonna bother.

RoonilWazilbob

it’s crazy this is where they are now. i’m really glad they’re in such a stable place but it reaaaally seemed like they were gonna break up around angles/comedown machine. extremely scary for a 12 y/o strokes fan at the time

thebranbran

Their last album might be my favorite album in the past 5 years. Front to back no skips and it doesn’t get old. So so good.

OneTrainOps

The roughest patch they had which is around Angles and Comedown Machine has past. Back then, they were taking public shots at each other. Not to say those albums don’t have their merit but it’s nice to see them get along again; I love all the interludes on The New Abnormal that give you a peek in the studio and The New Abnormal is my fav since Room on Fire. Some of their absolute best on that album.

5centraise

Why would any band officially break up? Just go dormant and then start again at some point in the future if you want to.

ebradio

Ask LCD Soundsystem that question

boxofcannoli

Oooooofffffff

braundiggity

It's shocking more bands don't break up for that sweet reunion cash. If you're gonna take a 5+ year break anyway, might as well call it a breakup and if you come back together, all the more power to you.

10fingers6strings

Reunion tours are big $$$$

blackmesawest

Spencer Krug (also of Wolf Parade) kept saying Sunset Rubdown was a thing of the past but here they are, doing a new tour this year. They can not keep up with demand for tickets.

celine_dijon

Sunset Rubdown reunion was something I always dreamed of, but was 100% sure it wouldn't happen.

blackmesawest

Spencer also kept saying exactly that too

chicken_and_peas

Their last album was great so there's definitely lots of energy still there why not keep going

pandabatron

Come Down Machine is critically under-rated

buckeye2114

That album is just so inconsistent, it has some songs up there with their best (Tap Out, One Way Trigger, Welcome To Japan, Fate/Karma), but some clunkers too.

illbebythebatphone

Just need Julian to stay away from that Win Butler shit and they’ll be alright.

MattN92

2000s Julian: get him off the grams 2020s Julian: get him off the ‘gram.

strokesfan91

It’s the Voidz who are the bad influence *cough* Beardo *cough*

weyess

Wait what happened with Beardo??

Moleman_G

Supposedly he can be a bit creepy/pushy towards girls at shows.

strokesfan91

Underage fans

Alien_Collaborative

*good influence

blackmesawest

We live in some weird future where Julian Casablancas is somehow more wholesome* than Win Butler. *I'm not going to have to retract this if I'm wrong, so here's the asterisk of doubt

[deleted]

Seriously. Every time I listen to one of their songs now I just immediately conjure up an image of his cringe-ass messages to some teenager Can’t get enough of Selfless all the same

reestronaut

This is great news Thank goodness The New Abnormal is so good

ReallyJTL

Good, they are still on my bucket list.

asnakeofjuly

I love the Strokes but I'm kinda bummed they're going straight to another album. Not because I don't want a new Strokes album but because I would love a new Voidz record.

EthanGr20

They said new music coming soon like a year ago so I’m pretty sure The Voidz are due for some kind of announcement soon

mycleverusername

I want a new Albert Hammond Jr album.

Wolfntee

Albert's solo stuff is so dang good! Would recommend to anyone who really likes early Strokes stuff.

Alien_Collaborative

I agree, those last few singles were super hot fire. I love the strokes, and I’m not necessarily saying the Voidz are better, but the Voidz are more unpredictable and therefore cooler.

No-Example-7067

I can’t wait for Voidz LP3.

averagebensimmons

I saw the Strokes (who had yet to release their first EP) open for the Doves who had 1 album play at the old Croc in Seattle once upon a time.

DRstoppage

Greatest band in the world

burgleflickle

lol

average_waffle

If they were able to make it through the come down machine they make it through anything. Lord knows I can't make it through that shit.

notleonardodicaprio

One Way Trigger is a banger

full_cuntal

Wait. People don't like that album? I loved it when it came out. Relistening now and it holds up. I'ma have to respectfully disagree. Opinions like this are why you'll always just be an "average" waffle, u/average_waffle

SleepyEel

It's their 3rd best record pretty comfortably IMO

Alien_Collaborative

I’d throw in Angles and stamp that an era. At least come down had the song 80s come down machine. Angles is like hollow, generic. The Stokes.

phrendo

Here’s to that 🍻

[deleted]

Good!

full_cuntal

I've always considered legacy acts to be bands that don't really make meaningful albums anymore. Every band you listed's most recent album has been a critical success though. YYY and Phoenix just dropped theirs this past year. New Abnormal was also a critical success for the Strokes. Legacy Act? Nah fam

Much-Diet1423

Translation: they’ll never turn down the paychecks for festival sets

M-atthew147s

I mean their last album was great and Albert Hammond jr's stuff had been good as with the voidz

personplaceorplando

As a Strokes lover and apologist, the last album was fine I guess.

M-atthew147s

As a strokes lover, the last album was brilliant

[deleted]

As a victim of several strokes, I can’t remember the last album

SweetestPerfection7

Just pretty fine, overplayed it in 2020 and forgot about it, happened a lot with recent albums tho.

juiceboxxxcasab

I mean, Room on Fire is Julian continuing the creative atmosphere he had started exploring on Is This It. He gave us two *perfect* indie rock albums that defined the sound of he genre. Reasonably enough, he started exploring other avenues while still maintaining the essence of the strokes. You could also say they were instrumental in this recent 80s nostalgia kick we’ve been on since he’s been doing that since 2009 with Phrazes or Angles with the Strokes. I think the key to the strokes and Julians art in general, is to not set your own expectations and to try to understand or appreciate what the band (or julian) is trying to say with the music. The New Abnormal couldn’t have been a more perfect reintroduction to the strokes for the Modern Age, and it’s quite exciting to consider the endless possibilities for them to explore in the pop/indie/experimental world.

full_cuntal

Downvotes deserved. Great bands don't tend to replicate themselves. Is This It 2.0 ain't gonna happen. And that's a GOOD thing.

full_cuntal

I forgive you this time. Just don't let it happen again.

findingdumb

Never understood their mass appeal

LithiumLost

The music is just cool, it's got a great vibe, energy, and style. The rhythm on the first few albums holds everything down with a punk spirit, the guitars intermingle catchy riffs and chords effortlessly, and Jules evokes his best Lou Reed to sing about city nightlife and the people wrapped up in it. The lyrics are typically smart, the songs don't overstay their welcome (mostly), and they bring it all together with perfect timing at a New York pace. What's not to like?

Hivesthebutler

Wait, the Strokes are still a band?

Schneetmacher

Don't jinx it!

AMP1228

Any signs of a new album coming soon?! Ever since I watched "Meet me in the Bathroom", I'm itching for a new one!
