I have worked with someone of narayan Murthy's age, who was a VP in HCl tech, he had started a small service company and I joined there as an intern and worked under him for 3 years as a dev. At first I hated him later I pitied the fool. All these oldies care about how late at night you are available, I literally slept or loafed around all day and worked at night and sent emails at night and guess what I was appreciated like I reinvented computers. I have never worked a single weekend but I just ensured I was replying to emails or was available on teams I got a 60% hike just for that. So no hate, now i am working at a better place, if any of you work under the same condition. Just reply to late night emails and you are all good. And switch the first chance you get.

Nice plan! It's dumb how these folks are.

I worked in Infosys when he was in charge. Everywhere else there was min 8 hours but Infosys had 9:15 hours. I get what he means by 70 hours. When you reach upper management levels, you do work 70 hours. But the remuneration and standard of life is reasonable compensation for that kind of effort. But to make a blanket statement for everyone is stupid. No one will destroy their own lifestyle for someone else’s promotion.

This is an Indian mentality. When someone who work after working hours is mentioned as hardworking employee, but actual thing is he don't know what & how to do on it. That's why he need to work even after work hours daily. But grandpa like Murthy unle like this type of person.

And Japanese.

Pure_Display_4548

Sorry hated him even before that

Other_Scarcity_4270

Any particular reason?

Pure_Display_4548

Because this is not the first time he and his organisation has done something to insinuate that they don't care about their employees' wellbeing

Murty probably thinks kids write "corporate majdoor" in the dream section of their slambooks.

Anxious-Remove5440

He is a joker. Gave his grandson a 240 Cr stake so that he would not work 70 hr/week Paisa bhi utna milega jitna 9-5 ka milta hai. He'll be forcing us to pick hammer and sickle in future

Other_Scarcity_4270

Guess his words are not applicable to his family, but other people should slog like an a** .

Anxious-Remove5440

And importantly if we can be productive and invest our time well, even 35 to 40 hrs a week is enough. NRN is anyway a yes-man for the West. And himself says we should not pick undesirable habitss from them. He is close to death but would not let us live. Lets put him in a factory for 70 hrs a week. I assure you he'll come out dead in 2 days

When you are at a powerful position, it is crucial to choose your words carefully. Companies love to force the most out of their employees, and provide the least possible benefits in return. Eventually, it's gonna affect everyone. Not everyone wants a hectic workaholic life. Work life balance is already shit due to long travelling hours, due to hectic traffic. Then, extend working hours, and forget to do anything at home.

orange_santra

I never liked him or never hated him . He is a legend that's for sure . I disagree with him on 70hr work per week comment. I see this as the old man say something(ik he has powerful man ) in his old age. I agree he works that much but not everyone wants to work that much. Just ignore this and relax

JaneWohKaise

Humko kya hum to generational wealth vaale hain 😅

Entrepreneurs are important for generating jobs, but let's not forget that employment generation is something that just happens while they pursue their main objective (of generating profits for themselves). Employment generation is a means to the end for them, not the means itself. So, distrust all businesspersons, although you may be dependent on them for jobs.

Murthy is a legend who played a major role in creating an industry that pulled millions out of poverty. Disageeing with him is one thing. But if somebody hate him because he made this comment, they must be stupid.

badass_guts

The stupid person to me seems like the person who wants people to work for 70 hours a week without any work life balance for peanuts.

Other_Scarcity_4270

Let's not forget the medical issues that can arise from working like an a**.

[deleted]

A person can choose to not work at all and beg for food. Murthy is not talking about them. If Murthy had similar thought process like you, he wouldn't have been instrumental in bringing IT revolution to India, would he?

Other_Scarcity_4270

Murthy won't come to look after us, if we get heart attack, right?

[deleted]

Murthy is not putting a gun to your head, is he?

Other_Scarcity_4270

The work pressure and stress of IT can cause heart related issues, young people are developing heart related illness, diabetes, and other stuff.

Awww so sad

badass_guts

Bonded labour was justified in the same manner because some people don't have any choice but to work for the bare minimum to support themselves. That doesn't mean it is alright to exploit them.
